Re: Fitness star Ashley Horner to complete 50 ironman triathlons in 50 days [M~] [ In reply to ]

I bet you pine for the days portrayed on Mad Men don't you.

You can talk about Tramp Stamps or Attention Whores all you want but once you start denigrating Don Draper, you're really going too far...

Admittedly I quit following the IC after his eliptical run on day 19. But that 53 minutes swim in PA sorta jumps out. Was there an explanation for it - I would assume strong downriver current? It’s really amazing that he was able to do this logistically let alone physically.

Yeah, the 53 minute swim is unusual, but that can easily happen in an Ironman where they are swimming downriver. Probably happens far more often than one out of fifty, even.

Wasn't IC was already a very accomplished Ironman before attempting this? Like a 10 hour range Ironman kind of athlete? Is my memory wrong or didn't he also do several in a row just to prepare for it?

Wait, found it.... he already held the record for most 70.3s and 140.6s in a year - 22 and 30.

I don’t know his IM history but I think he did a world record 70.3 challenge a year or two frior to the 50/50/50. I tried to look it up, but it seems that I have to buy his book on Amazon to find out. Lol

You may disagree and that is your right. But spend some time searching and you will find loads of sources that cite the word tramp stamp and being sexist and originating as a derogatory term.

Lots of things (1) originate as sexist and derogatory terms and mellow out over time; other things (2) originate innocently and acquire unsavory connotations over time. Yet others (3) get urban myths started about their origins that purport to be sexist or derogatory but no such origin exists (see "rule of thumb"). Terms falling into (1) and (3) are popularly latched onto by people who lack a compelling argument on their own and want to use an indirect ad hominem to put the other people on the defense against an accusation of bigotry instead of disproving their points.

You haven't proven a bit of the extreme claims you've made. If "attention whore" is the same as "whore", why did you omit the word "attention" in your post? You did that because you know "called her a whore" is a nasty, inflammatory accusation and "called her an attention whore" is not, and you wanted the maximum reaction to your post (and assumed no one would call you on it).

[General reply to this thread.]

As chuy, B.Doughtie, Satanellus and others discussed early on, the amount of running alone for 50/50 would be a big ask, even if Horner has done some ultras.

As someone who's done stretches of consecutive 100+ mile weeks, I think of this in weekly mileage terms: over seven consecutive weeks of 183.4-mile weeks (setting aside the other X hours of daily aerobic work she's planning).

As the kids say, I can't even. The idea of how even to go about preparing for -let alone achieving- that kind of run volume? I mean, best of luck to you, but -as everyone has noted- that's considerable volume* and resulting stress to the body, even IF you're a specialist trained for it.

*yes, I realize it's not 75 miles per day (which is unreal crazy)

I know that unfounded accusations of bigotry are upsetting, but that's a little extreme, don't you think?

There's a lot of good information in these forums. If you ever have a question you'll get an answer (or 7, all of them different). It's a very helpful place, if you don't focus on negative threads.

If you go into the settings of your browser and delete your login and password, you'll be set but it will be your loss. Just remember that no one makes you read every single thread on here.
