I love college football

I'm watching UCLA at Cincinnati right now. I doubt that either team will have a chance to be in the bowl series at the end of the year but this is a hell of an entertaining game.

I recently moved to downtown Cincinnati (from the suburbs) and was sitting out on my balcony Wednesday evening. A caravan of 5 tour buses came rolling thru with a police escort; I thought it was the Indianapolis Colts rolling in. After a stop at a hotel they ended up parking in a lot right across the street where I saw UCLA signs in the front windows, so it was the team buses along with a box truck I'm assuming was their equipment truck.

I'm also pumped to have college football back! The best game of the day is starting--Oregon vs. Auburn. It's great to see the fans pack Jerryville in TX for this neutral site game. The place is packed.

That's a sharp contrast to the Stanford game. That was embarrassing. There was no on there. Kudos for Brock Huard of Foxsports to call out the lame Stanford fans. They are a ranked team and the place was nearly empty.

My Cats honored the Hefty Lefty today and avoided a loss in a trap game against a good MAC program. Being a life long UK fan, I know how this football program goes and it was entirely conceivable they would come off a huge 10 win season and historic recruiting with a loss to Toledo. Instead they pulled through and covered.

Stanford was deceptive in terms of crowd size. Tons of people watched from the edges of the concourses to stay out of the blazing sun. Also, the side of the stadium that drew more shade stayed full (perhaps got fuller as the day wore on), but that isn’t the side seen opposite the press box.

Sorry my ‘Cats couldn’t find the win in this one. Classic NU; great D, who knows what will come of the offense.

I still love the rivalry and pageantry but I tried to watch some of the Alabama game today. Every time I flipped to it, it was a commercial. Once I got the game broadcast but nothing was happening except a bunch of zebras reviewing a play. I ended up watching the last hour of Mahogany instead. Diana Ross was something else.

For Auburn to overcome that true freshman QB, the offensive line play, and the linebacking core... wow. That was like pulling a rabbit out of a hat.
I appreciate the way the sport of football punishes teams that play not to lose. Oregon easily had the talent to win that game.

Oh God. There's always one. WTF is a palouse, anyway?

But seriously, there's a Wazzu house in our neighborhood that overlooks a valley with a major intersection below the house. The house is painted that dark cement gray with crimson trim. The fence is the same gray but instead of crimson trim there's a giant crimson "WSU" logo (you know the one, a stylized "WSU" that looks like a cougar head) facing the valley. The house's three flagpoles have one United States flag in the middle and two Coug flags on either side. They've got a big "3" flag too, though I can't recall off the top of my head where it is. I want to say its affixed to the fence next to the painted WSU logo.

Apropos of nothing, I think this photo should be hung in the Louvre.

I'm not going to give Oregon the benefit of the doubt. The Better Team lasts four quarters, be it in a dominant position or in a comeback. The Better Team never snatches defeat from the jaws of victory. Oregon folded from top to bottom and that's not what The Better Team ever does.

That said, I think their new coach Mario Cristobal (sp?) may be the real deal. He was an offensive lineman on those late-'80s Miami Hurricanes teams that were always in the hunt for the national championship. My understanding is that he's trying to change the culture at Oregon to match his Miami teams' culture (albeit hopefully minus the rampant criminal activity [remember "Catholics versus Convicts"?]). He wants his team to smack the opponent in the mouth early and often and spend all game talking sh*t about it.

Here's a better look at Cristobal and who he is:

Envy? There's the difference between you and me goober, I enjoy watching football even when I don't have a horse in the race (and I don't have one in most games I watch). Generally I've found SEC grads to be envious of my indoor plumbing, literacy, and the ability to get a job outside of the state I graduated from.

I felt bad for him as soon as he went down. You could tell he was in terrible pain. I'm not a fan of UF but I never like seeing an opposing player hurt to that degree

I enjoy College Football but never understood why there are so many games with the top teams playing teams they could beat with the entire back up players. Watching top teams win 55-0 is a joke and there are a lot of those week in and week out.

$$$

The losing team gets funded through these games.

The winning team gets an easy win in hopes of improving their national standing. It's stupid and they actually should be penalized, but at the end of the year an easy win is more valuable than a difficult loss.

-my family was in town last weekend so we watched the second half of the OSU/TX game on TV

-I do like the ESPN college gameday show, which is on at the gym in the AM. Today I saw a sign that said "[whatever the tOSU quarterback's name is] eats store-bought corn" heehee!!!

Another Saturday... SEC Still the most dominate Conference. It’s really unfair, they beat up on each other while the other weak conferences watch. Auburn would beat the majority of the non - SEC in the Top Ten. It’s sad that there will have to be another SEC team take a loss next week when Florida and LSU play.

Ohio State and Oklahoma look good with back up SEC quarterbacks.

My brother and I are both graduates from USMA. I played FB for Army; my brother was recruited by Coach K to play BB for Army and did so for one season till he came in with a 1.7GPA so Coach K told him "you're here to be an Army officer first so we're letting you go to focus on academics--come back when you're good to go." When he got his GPA back up into the 2.0 range he went and shot on the Army Pistol Team for his remaining three years.

I am in a BT10 weekly pick'm. I have not went against Illinois since watching their first game. They are a better team than in recent past and noticeably more talented. They still have a long way to go, but it just kind of seemed like they would put enough of a game together on offense to allow them to win a couple of games.

Am sure there is a good young fart response there but old man's disease strikes me silent. Not too old that I don't remember fondly the good times in Happy Valley and appreciate the class act on display now that the troubles are in the past.

Wanted to drop a dime on the finest uniform discussion in college football back a few posts ago while it was current but missed my chance. After a white out win, I have to brag on the blue and whites. So elegantly simple and understated. Same uniform was worn in '70 and earlier, maybe all the way to '55. Fad and over hyped fashion is not our thing. The one change has been to allow the nike swoosh to be sewn on. I guess everybody chases the almighty dollar.

Gotta agree with ya about Wisconsin and OSU. I was really hoping UW would be going in to that game undefeated. Regardless, I hope someone beats OSU this year but they are a very "complete" looking team.

On another note, what about SMU. Only took me 30+ years to get over the "death penalty" (for NCAA violations) but they have an undefeated season so far).

Not specific to Franklin and not in pink. The troubles refer to the depths of the program and the Sandusky matter. Not at all familiar with Franklin's past or present behavior that might not be on a class act level. Just an overall impression that there is a feel good atmosphere up there now, both on and off the field. More attribution for this class act goes to the student body and that game days seem positive without the pall anymore. I am happy for those young men and women.

Thanks! Not that I had anything to do with the result. I had a list of things I was going to do after once we were down 24-0 at least the end of the first quarter.

Actually had a guy call about halftime wondering if he could come look at the boat I have for sale at 1:30 or 2:00 and since it was still a tight game I told him I wasn’t available until later in the afternoon. Probably should prioritize better.

Notre Dame Va Tech on right now

The Fighting Hawleys play USAFA though Navy is taking the CIC trophy this year

An overrated UF versus a probably overrated UGA probably best game of the afternoon

Although UW Utah has potential

Okie State (the sportsball team of a certain mathematician) TCU on ESPN

Tulane Tulsa on the Deuce will watch if close

Night games SMU Memphis is intriguing

Oregon USC meh game since USC will be looking for a new coach soon

we're currently beating the horny frogs. Unfortunately ESPN college gameday didn't have any super funny signs this AM; the best was "SMU shops baby gap". If there were better signs, they went over my head. My favorite sign this year was when the college gameday was in Nebraska and the fans had a sign of "[quarterback name] eats store-bought corn." That's tied for me with last year when gameday was at the U of O in Eugene and someone had a sign "[quarterback name] doesn't recycle."

oh, as you probably know, no more prairie schooner for the rest of the season for OU on account of its having capsized two weeks ago. I'm sure that, much like the Titanic, no one envisioned the schooner falling apart. Wonder what new antics they dreamed up to replace it? Did they just use horses like our Bullet and his new sidekick BB?

ND is always overrated . They have to play themselves out of a ranking while better teams, that don’t have an NBC tv deal, have to claw their way into one.

Bellyaching? Stating facts is not bellyaching. I will concede I may be gloating a bit.

LSU will get into the playoffs and then be exposed as being really good but not great.

As much as I enjoy seeing Satan being beaten twice in a year, I do have a little Sympathy for the Devil. Alabama got screwed at the end of the first half. I've never seen that before. They put one second back on the clock and gifted them 3 points and Alabama loses by 3. They got the call right that he was down with 1 second left, but the play should have just played out because they wouldn't have been able to run out the field goal unit. Weird.

And of course there was the doink off the goalpost at end. That was awesome. It was a very interesting game to watch.

TV is the short answer. The networks want at least one good game in every time slot if they can.

Ehh, I've said the same thing a couple times this season. Sooner or later it will come back to bite me, I just don't think this weekend is it. And always fun to needle the bandwagoning Purdue grad.

I don't think Wisconsin gets in if they win. Head to head is even then and OSU only has one loss. And OSU brings better ratings (I know that shouldn't matter but I'm not naive).

I think both LSU and OSU, and maybe Clemson but they are iffier, get in even if they lose this weekend as long as it isn't a disaster.

The real question is if all the favorites win, who gets in, 2 loss Georgia, 1 loss Utah, or 1 loss Oklahoma?

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

Somehow in future iterations, conference champions need to be included into the series. But i do agree with Wisconsin being denied as the 2 loss champion. Favorites all win, then my vote goes to Utah. I can see Utah winning it all.

Lawrence: just Clemson

I don't really think this will be much of a game. I typically don't like comparing like teams, but PSU played OSU pretty tough for a half of football. OSU blew out Cincinnati, a team Memphis hardly beat twice at home. In fact, they should have lost the first game but Cincinnati blew it.

Odd things happen after a long layoff, especially with a couple guys suspended. I'm sure OU fans are wondering who is wearing their team's uniforms.

Oh, and LSU is much better than OU. Their offense in the first half was pretty much flawless.

On one hand I was thinking the same thing. And that maybe six teams is better. (Power Five Champions plus one at-large and two teams get a bye).

But then I wonder if 1 v. 8 would always be this bad? What if this was LSU and Wisconsin? Do we KNOW that it would be this bad or worse? Is this just an anomaly?

But yes, this is dreadful.

I moved from Cal/Stanford country to UGA land. The rabid and illogical fans here quickly made me despise UGA and by default, the SEC. This LSU team has the chance to go down as arguably the best team in history. 15-0 with 7 wins vs top 10 teams, 4 of those being top 5 teams. It may have been politics, but it save the Big 10 from the same embarrassment OU just suffered.

I don't think this Clemson game is over yet. They don't look as outclassed as OU did. If their DB could catch a ball that hit him in the numbers it would have been 7-10 early.

The penalty was for helmet to helmet contact which occurred because the QB lowered his shoulder and consequently his helmet to take on the hit. It was bullshit.

You want to call unsportsmanlike conduct or late hit on the guy who DIDN'T get ejected fine.

Dude, I played D1 football on the D-line. We had wet dreams about coming in off a block against a undefended QB and totally wrecking him. That's not how the game is played this day. Grabbing the QB about the neck--AFTER he's already being tackled--and twisting his neck as he goes to the ground

That dogs not gonna hunt for ya buddy

The penalty was for helmet to helmet contact which occurred because the QB lowered his shoulder and consequently his helmet to take on the hit. It was bullshit.

You want to call unsportsmanlike conduct or late hit on the guy who DIDN'T get ejected fine.

Lawrence lowered his shoulder because he was already in the process of being well tackled. Yes, I would agree the call should more properly have been unsportsmanlike conduct and (still) ejection. Ejection was the right and final outcome cause that late neck twisting tackle to injure/intimidate was a No Go in this day and age.

I certainly don't think it was the same class of targeting as the idiot OU DB, but as the rules are written today, the OSU DB gets tossed. You got Kirk Mr. OSU Herbstreit himself saying it was targeting. You don't have much to stand on here.

Lookie here, we have a game. Don't have a coronary before you see OSU lose this one.

I've been watching. Clemson is improving and might pull this one out. If Clemson does win, I'm going to throw this line out - "You were right. Clemson hasn't play a good team". If they lose, I'll come back and edit this and say that I thought OSU was going to win all along.

It isn't that it couldn't technically be called targeting, it is that the way the rule is written is stupid. 6'1" Wade cannot drop his head and hit 6'6" Lawrence helmet to helmet unless Lawrence ducked into the hit.

Sometimes when two guys are running really fast at each other their heads are going to clash. They should wear helmets. Yes he should have kept his face up, but the rule sucks.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

The good news is that even if OSU loses my life (minus this fucking flu) has been going really well lately.

The bad news is that even if OSU wins they expect me to go to work Monday.

It would be easier for me to be nonchalant about it if OSU hadn't shown so poorly the last 2 times in the playoffs.

It was a hell of a game.

If LSU plays like they did in the first half they are better than either of these teams.

No team has been more dominant than Mount Union.

Typically I would agree with that. But Mount Union is now 2 years removed from winning a championship.

Since 2015:

Mount Union 67- 4 with 2 championships

NDSU 69-5 with 3 championships and a chance to make that 4 championships and a 70-5 record over the last 5 seasons including a win against ranked FBS school. I saw a odd stat during the ISU game two weeks ago, it was the first time that NDSU hadn't scored a touchdown since 2002! They still won of course. The only two teams to beat them in those 5 years has been SDSU and James Madison.

Michigan has the same problem in the Big10 as some of the teams do in the SEC. There are a few very dominating teams Michigan has to compete against every year for top placement, and that is very difficult. Bama and Ohio State are the 800 pound gorillas in their respective conference. Behind them you have UGA and Penn State who have been consistently good the past few years. With Michigan having to fight against OSU, PSU, Wisconsin, and now Minnesota, it's actually pretty good they win as well as they do.

I'm not a Michigan nor Big10 fan either. Just an observation

Not sure I would put Minnesota in the list and leave Iowa out.

With Michigan's stature and money they should be competing with OSU. End of discussion, Anything less is settling.. Right now they are settling. I am amazed at how much the Blue bloods say what the coach has done is enough, or good. It should not be. Saying you will compete with Mich State / OSU / Iowa is a joke. Cut your program budget in half and then you can talk about competing with the also rans.

I never understood this Michigan comment, yeah we want more, our coach can't get it but we are to afraid to try again. Wait saying it that way, and looking at the past few coaches maybe I do get it.

But hey at least he is a Michigan man.

If he loses the Game next year I see Fleck coming in to replace him

Which game?

Fleck wont work he is not a Michigan man.

Seriously?

So your saying 9-2 and beating OSU but losing to MSU and Penn State would be ok?

Or is Fleck a Michigan man (I really don't know his lineage)

"The Game" is Ohio State

He coached at Western Michigan and beat B1G teams.

SO 9-2 but beating OSU is ok then?

Yes Followed Western a bit then, not all that impressed by the guy, partially from past players and his lack of staying anywhere. I think he can turn a program, but not sure he can sustain it.

I’d pay a LOT of money to watch Harbaugh and Saban in a cage fight.

I am a Michigan guy. I find it odd that anyone from the Big 10 would want another conference to win. I rooted for OSU and would also root for MSU if they represented the conference. A Bama win only helps Bama, and they really don't need a hell of a lot of luck. A Michigan win makes the conference more relevant.

Those definitely hurt them. I watched part of the FSU game yesterday - 6 turnovers. The QB had 4 interceptions and a fumble. I think the commentators tonight said that Oregon had 3 TD's off of 4 turnovers.

Makes sense. But I can’t do it. Michigan and Ohio State can both suck it. All day. Any day. Against whoever they play.
Saban is 3rd in my list of sucking it.

Yeah, I hear you. I'm a WSU Cougar so I can never bring myself to root for the ducks. It was an entertaining game and Wisconsin did stink it up with turnovers and didn't deserve to win. I'm satisfied knowing the Rose Bowl win looks good for the Pac-12.

This is the first time in recent memory that I had any thoughts of wanting Michigan to win. I thought they got screwed on yet another BS roughing call. I was actually happy when I turned it off at the half and they were ahead.

Then I came back down and they lost. And I wasn't happy that Alabama won, but I was happy that Harbaugh lost. So I tried, but I just couldn't follow through. I really do want UM to lose every single game.

I was very happy that Minnesota beat Auburn though and sad to see Wisconsin piss the game away.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

SEC Dominates again! 6-2 in Bowls. No other conference is close.

Georgia and Alabama each had 10+ starters missing, still win.

Great seeing so called contenders from weak conferences going down.

It’s especially satisfying seeing Michigan and Ohio State(thanks Clemson) go down...again.....

You can have the Auburn loss.

Probably will watch both but tomorrow looks like a more interesting game from a talent perspective. Well that and I will order a pizza tomorrow for lunch.

Nevada's coach should be fired in the locker room. Absolute idiocy 2X (maybe 3C) cost his team the game

I felt bad for the Indiana fans (and players). They've not won a bowl game in a while, and this one was so so close......until the 4th quarter. Great job, by Tennessee, with the onside kick.

I didn't understand why Indiana was in regular kick off formation. There was 4ish minutes left, and I believe Tennessee had 1 time out. Put your team in a spot to win, meaning put two players back to receive and the rest up front if an onside was kicked. Just plan poor coaching on Indiana's side.

I am not watching the game. Hopefully Clemson drops a pass, that is picked up for a fumble but called incomplete. It is then reviewed and called a fumble after 3 steps were completed and they get beat because of it.

SEC is overrated!! said the Clowns.... Can’t wait for next year for all the Big 10/12 fans to say the SEC is overrated again. It happens every year that the big 10/12 clowns pretend to be contenders.

SEC, national champs and dominated Bowl games. Big 10/12 had losing records in the Bowls. ACC has one great SOUTHERN team with a great coach from the SEC.

It’s getting comical each year to hear the SEC is overrated from big 10/12 fans.

Sort of an interesting article. The gist of it is that we've been seeing and will continue to see the same "Big 6" college football teams (LSU, Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Georgia) in the college football playoffs most of the time. The rest of the teams will be fighting for the odd scrap.

This was compared to the NCAA basketball tournament where you regularly get a Loyola-Chicago, Wichita State, or Texas Tech in the final four.

What wasn't really discussed was what do the fans want to see. While fans might enjoy a spunky Mississippi State basketball team making their way through the NCAA basketball tournament and earning a spot in the final four, would very many fans prefer to see the Mississippi State football team instead of Alabama in the college football playoff?

Who knows? With Mike Leach now at Mississippi State................
