Will the Torpedo bottle fit in other BTA cages?

The side to side sway would be due to the straps not being tight enough I would think.

I wish the straps were longer. At the Rev3 SC race today I had to re-attach different straps about 8 different times. (Not fun during a race). The course is quite bumpy at times. I hadn't noticed it in training rides, but wasn't going the speeds I was today.

I just can't get enough velcro contact with the straps. Oh well, back to the old tried and true tie wraps.

I got the $75 version and just used my carbon torpedo cage instead of the composite one that comes with it. It's too bad that xlab doesn't sell the "mini mount" separate so those of use with the original torpedo BTA setup could simply get the new mount and bottle without the cage.

I am using the Xlab Bottle with a standard cage, ironically i am using the speedfill mount. Sits very securely, does not need a strap either like the speedfill did.

Best,

Any of our XLAB cages will fit the system. There are quite a few parameters that need to be be met with other cages in order to work with the bottle. So I am not saying there aren't any out there it is just we have not tested them all.

The parameters I am referring to are: the height and width of the bottom hook (in order to fit into the rear of the bottle), the height of the sides (so they do not interfere with the dolphin tail), the top hook of the cage must align to the groove on the bottle, and the thickness of the spine of the cage (although screws can be bought at a store to compensate for this).

Which cage were you trying to see if it would fit?

Is anybody using the Torpedo with a Garmin 800/810? I know the computer mount that comes with it won't work, but I'm wondering if anybody else has made it work with a third party mount.

Thanks

It really depends on how long your extensions are. Let me get you some measurements tomorrow on how long the entire system is and then you can see if you have enough clearance to use a barfly style mount on your extensions. Do you have a picture that you could send of your aerobars? Top view preferably.

My Felt Devox bars are 100mm apart center to center. I think the bigger issue on my setup is that the bottle can't sit down between my aero pads. The bottom of the mount plate is a good 3/4" above the top of the extensions.

So the straps have to go up as well as out to get the mount plate. Then I don't get a lot of contact on the velcro straps:

If the strap were an inch or two longer I could wrap it all the way around, instead of just a 1/2" on the top as you see here. But like I said, no big deal. I've had a cage mounted there with tie wraps for almost 3 years before I tried this. So I'll just go back to tie wraps. I can't have this thing come apart in a race again.

Would really need a picture of your setup and/or measurements of the length of your aero extensions to be able to see how much space we have to work with.

Hey, the first thing I see is that your straps are not installed correctly. The very tip of the white part of the strap (forms a triangle) should be heading towards the mount. See this pic. Also the reinforced section of the strap (the thicker part) should be the part that is by the mount. This is to protect the mount from tearing the strap.

By the way congrats on the qualification for the World Championships in Vegas, how did you do?

That one won't fit. I highly recommend any of the XLAB cages as we designed the bottle around those.

I just received and set up my bottle system yesterday! I have what might be a real stupid question, but since I haven't used the bottle yet, I'll ask. I often drive to locations to go biking. Do most people fill the bottle at home and use the solid lid for transport, then switch to the slotted when getting ready to go, or bring a bottle to fill the torpedo at the departure location prior to starting the ride? I intend to practice in-motion refills with the slotted lid, otherwise I will just leave the solid lid on.

When I used the slotted lid, I brought my liquids to the site I was riding in separate bottles. I have since switched over to the solid lid, but I guess out of habit I bring my liquids in separate bottles with me then fill them up.

So I didn't really help lol but I guess an answer to your question is it is personal preference. If I were you I would probably bring the liquids, just so that the solid lid doesn't have a chance to get lost in the car if you forget to bring it in with you.

Will the bottle withstand freezing with all the bits and pieces? I emailed you this Q but never got a reply so I'll ask here.

Hi Frank,

The day you emailed was the 1st day in Kona so I was getting all of our pros setup with their gear. I apologize for the delay, but Kona is a very busy time for me!

We did some initial testing and the only issue was that it took about 3 and a half hours to de-thaw completely. Good for an ironman, not so much a training ride. Note that this is just initial testing we haven't completed the overtime testing just yet. That is still in progress.

No worries. So there's no solid info yet on how the freezing and thawing will affect the small parts and seals?

Thanks

Long term use no as the final design of the bottle, lids and plugs are just a few months old. Temporarily and occasional freezing however is testing fine though.

Hi Candice:

I just bought the BTA Bottle today for IM FLA and haven't ridden with it yet. The bite valve has a slit in it. Should I return it or can I have shipped a new valve and straw please. I am going to use a Speedfil valve and will cut down the straw more than with the original valve. Please let me know. Thanks.
