Are there any xlab cages that are not carbon? I want to buy the refill kit but the cage I have now will not work so will need a new cage.

Hey, the first thing I see is that your straps are not installed correctly. The very tip of the white part of the strap (forms a triangle) should be heading towards the mount. See this pic. Also the reinforced section of the strap (the thicker part) should be the part that is by the mount. This is to protect the mount from tearing the strap.

Thanks for the input. Do I have the straps installed correctly now?

As you can see, I still don't get a lot of contact between hook and loop.

Candice, any chance I can get a new strap? I sliced about 3/4" off the end of one of mine. Completely my fault and I'll pay for the replacement.

I love the 400, by the way.

Maybe a dumb question... but is the BTA suppsoed to be over your stem or can it be infront of it and tucked just behind you wrists? I run fairly narrow pads so I don't think I can get a bottle between there without widening them, which is seems would be counter productive and possible increase drag unless I cna shrug better because of it. Right not I have in facing backwards just in front of my pads and it seems to work well. I was suprised that the weight didn't bother me at all. If anything the extra mass made the steering a little more stable in crosswinds.

I'll probably just have to experiment a little this winter. Seems like most have them over the stem.

I run the Shimano Missile Evo Aerobars on the 2nd most narrow setting and typically cannot have a BTA fit between the pads. The slick thing about the XLAB torpedo mount is that I can have the front of it right up against my hands/wrists, but the tail narrows down so it fits really nicely between the pads and elbows. Furthermore, it is stacked up a little bit on spacers so it fits pretty flush against your forearms... Everyone's arm/hand position is different and the Torpedo allows you to move up/down and forward/back to get the most slick position. Once you have it between your arms, you'll see what I am talking about

Probably a question for Candice. The back end of mine is over my stem, which puts my computer right between my hands. I find the straw very easy to work with. I know the Torpedo can fit between narrower bars than the PD Aero HC, but I am not sure what the minimum distance is.

I'm actually just using a standard bottle with a X-lab mount and Gorilla cage so I can use it with hand-ups. I may however get once of those caps that convers a standard bottle to a straw type.

Yes more or less :) The only issue is the front left and back right are upside down (XLAB logos should be facing you when you are on the bike) but that is more aesthetics, function won't be affected.

I do see you don't have a lot of contact...do you have enough length on the bars to move the back straps closer to the front or on the other side of the arm rests? I can circulate your pictures here and see if anyone here has any more ideas.

Hi Candice,

I purchased the Torpedo System 100 ahead of participating in last week's Ironman Florida and had a question about my experience using the bottle in the race.

I'm pretty certain that I installed the mount per the instructions that came with the system, based on which I moved the straps/base as far back as possible on the aerobars, meaning that the mounting screw was over the stem. Based on that screw's location, I also used the velcro pad to help protect against inadvertent damage. I opted to go with the speed-fill lid, so I could top off the bottle on the fly. Occasionally some liquid would splash out of the lid and onto the bottle/cage. Evidently this liquid caused the velcro pad to come loose and move, as when we hit a particularly bumpy section of road about halfway through the race, the mounting screw began repeatedly hitting the stem.

I tried to remedy this on the fly but didn't have much luck - I even went so far as to stop and try to use my stem sticker (with my race number) to sort of "glue" the velcro down, but it didn't work. Now my stem is pretty good and scratched up. This appears to only be cosmetic as it's an aluminum stem, but I was wondering if this was a known issue or if you had any recommendations to prevent this from worsening in the future? I was going to see if I could find a different type of velcro-like pad, perhaps with stickier adhesive, but I'm kind of disappointed that I followed the instructions correctly and had my bike damaged under what I'd consider normal usage.

Thanks in advance for any insight you might have.
Chris

Hi Chris,

When you say the speed-fill lid was it the slotted lid?

On my initial testing with a much thinner mount (think more chatter) I used the slotted lid and velcro pads and this did not happen to me, but let me check internally and see if anyone has heard of this. I personally haven't.

Hey Chris,

We did an overnight test where we soaked the entire plate and pads and they were still on there. Can you email me? I have a couple more questions and haven't given up on coming up with a solution for you! candice@xlab-usa.com

Hi Candice,

Just a quick question in regard to the best cage to use with the torpedo refill upgrade kit. Is the Torpedo cage the optimal match or would the Gorilla or Chimp be better for preventing the bottle ejecting.

Thanks

Tom

Hi Tom,

They all work equally well. The Gorilla cage does have the higher grip out of the three, but it doesn't apply with the refill Torpedo System. As long as you use the correct set of screws, the screws will 'lock' into the groove on the bottom of the bottle.

This system worked great for my wife at Ironman Florida. She does not like bite valves so we removed that and it works great. Easy to fill, nice to fold down the straw too. Installation was easy following the instructions. The straps come with a soft gell type material that protects your bars and they are thick enough that you can tighten the mounting plate in a very stable position. Spend a few min to losen and retighten all around and you can get all four straps lined up squarely between the bars with all the lables consistently lined up. I too needed to install the supplied velcro pads over the stem bolts to avoid any rattling. The position of the computer mount was perfect for my wife and she had no issues at all. I got her the carbon one, i'm not putting a rigged solution on her really expensive bike. Nothing against doing that mind you. It's my wife! She deserves it, after all she could spend close to 10 hours in the saddle in an ironman.

Candice,

Does the selection in bold mean that the Gorilla cage will NOT work with the refill system? I ask because I have the "original" sized carbon torpedo mount and a Gorilla cage, and I'd like just to be able to order the refill system and have it all work. Also, is there ANY way to get the computer mount to work with the "original" sized mount and the new bottle? Perhaps by (gasp!) drilling a hole into the mount?

Thanks so much for answering this and for all of your amazing info on this thread! Planning on using the system for Ironman Cozumel!

Hey,

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I meant the difference in the grip forces amongst the cages doesn't matter for the Torpedo System as what is holding the bottle in are the screws that lock into the bottle body groove. Gorilla works perfectly with the Torpedo System. You could drill a hole in the standard Torpedo Mount, but it would be more restrictive on the computers you can use. The new Torpedo Mini Mount is longer allowing for more clearance between the computer and the bottle.

All the best for Ironman Cozumel! Should be a great race down there!
