I still don't like the fact that you have to take your hands off the aerobars to lift up and put back the straw everytime you need to drink (like the Shiv). That's why I prefer the PD Aero HC setup. It's right there!

Lower head > Drink > Lift Head > Ride!!

Just for clarification the Torpedo System does not require you to put the straw back flat. In fact Meredith Kessler on both her Vineman and Lake Stevens races did not lay the straw flat and kept it upright.

After all your testing, is there one setup that you would suggest someone who is not able to drop coin on testing? Such as, is it safest to do BTA and one zip tied to the saddle? Is putting bottles on the top and down tube not that significant?

I'm on an SC if you want to be overly specific but generalizing is fine.

I wish it were that easy, but aero is very personal. I know it's be written over and over again, but what works for one athlete will not necessarily work for another. Typically, if I comment on a particular piece of equipment being fast, it's because it's tested well for several athletes and/or setups.

Since this is a thread about the Torpedo, I comment on how good it is because it's tested well for every athlete we've seen use it. For instance, both Crowie and Luke McKenzie have tested the bottle here at ERO and seen a reduction in CdA, which is interesting since they have very different arm positions on the bike. Crowie is pretty standard with his arms, but Luke has raised extensions (his hands are higher than his elbows). They're not as high as they used to be because we found that a slightly lower angle was better for him during his fit, but they're still quite different. It was interesting to note that it didn't matter to the Torpedo, it was about the same advantage for both of them. Pretty cool.

In the end, though, if you're going to have a bottle behind you, keep it close to the saddle. Frame mounted bottles are fairly benign, though sometimes there's a small aero penalty. Go with the setup that allows you to stay in your aero position more, and you'll be faster. Oh, and the newer airfoil shaped "bento" boxes are surprisingly good.

Can you comment whether there any plans to sell just the bottle without the mount Candice?

Yes, bottle will be sold separately. I was told by Xlab after the initial shipment of the packages are sent out.

Well I guess the final question from me is whether it fits Profile Design Carbon Stryke aerobars. And I guess I'll know that when they publish the list in a week.

Candice - It's tough to tell from the pictures, but from what i can tell, the difference between the 100 and the 400 is 1) the cages, 2) colored spacers & bite valve, & 3)carbon vs. aluminum mounting plate. Correct? Assuming that, if I already have a torpedo cage, I'm assuming I can just mount it on the 100 and essentially have the same setup as the 400, correct? Is the clip for the straw integrated on to the bottle or the cages? Thanks.

Someone already beat me to it, sorry for the delay. Yes the bottle will be available to purchase by itself. It will come with the straw, bite valve, lids, and aero spacers. We are estimating these to be available end of this month if not earlier.

Hey,

If you go to the Models tab on the Torpedo page it explains the differences. But yes you are correct on the differences.

You can definitely do what you are suggesting if you have the Torpedo cage already and are ok with the alloy mount. The clip for the straw is on the bottle (http://xlab-usa.com/...phin-tail-design.jpg) note the picture is of a pre-production clip. The production one is more smooth. The bottle is also translucent white, not solid white.

If you have not tried the shiv set up you are missing something really good . Very easy to use the straw while on the areo bars. Really cleans up the front end of the bike. My garmin right there, nothing in the way. I have not had one issue since taking delivery on my s works shiv.

Got my Torpedo 100 from IOS today! Excellent system. Had a chance to put it through its paces tonight. Admittedly have never use another refillable bottle up front but there can't be any comparison. Fantastic implementation. I did find the "dolphin tail" to be a bit too tight of a fit to quickly put the straw down/up. So, I'm using industrial strength Velcro on the straw and bottle body. Super easy to push down and pull up now.

Glad you like it and thanks for the feedback on the dolphin tail. The cage on the Torpedo 100 does sit closer to the tail than the Torpedo cage thus the tighter fit you experienced. Have any pics you can post so we can all see the setup?

And this is how you sold me! So, do you have any pics of Merideth that you can share or link to so I can see the straw position?

thanks,

Snapped this as I was walking out the door this morning.

Also, to answer someone elses question about the straw - if its not "strapped" down in some way, it stands straight up. So no worries there.

Haha nice!

Here is a picture of Meredith at I believe Lake Stevens if I am not mistaken. She uses the front hole. Sorry I don't have a better picture. If you need a certain angle let me know.

I've long used the same thing approach for the tube of my Speedfil. I've got that industrial strength velcro on the aero bars and just put it down when in use. Works great.
