Re the fine splashes - the air hole in the solid cap has to be there in order for you to drink out of the bite valve. If it was completely solid then in a sense hydrolocks the system and prevents any liquids from coming out of the valve. If part of your bite valve is tucked under the center plastic piece then it could very well be that. May want to check on yours and see if this is the case.
Re not being able to get fluids - you may want to see if your system is horizontal or if it is tilting up at the front. If it's tilting up then try and get it more level which will help you get more fluids.
Re the floppy straw - yeah we just have the 1 thickness of straw, but we have had an elite test team member talk to us about this need. We are looking into this. If you can reach down with a shorter straw then this obviously would make it stiffer. I would not cut it at first and just tuck the straw into the bottle and see if you can get down low with ease. Because once you cut the straw there is no going back :)
