Hey Georgia...about Marjorie

Who the F elected that wombat? I know she ran unopposed, after her opponent bailed for officially family reasons, although the rumors were that he and his family was threatened.
In what universe do people vote for MTG? We aren't talking "left" and "right" there. We're talking a completely unhinged moron who doesn't know the first thing about anything.
Anyone from her district?

Her twitter account is straight out of an asylum.

Yes, I was chatting with jmh and we agreed she's part of the QAnon Squad...I think MTG is probably the most unhinged wombat in Congress.
It blows my mind that a district thought she would be a good representative for them.

Okay - I don’t agree with her politics- but she is textbook American Dream IMO.

She didn’t like what the government was doing. She actually researched what it takes to run for office and went back and got her GED and won a National election.

That’s pretty badass IMO.

Now I have no idea what the electors were thinking voting for her. But as a feminist- I think her path is pretty bad ass.

I hope others see her example and give it a go!

At the risk of sounding like an elitist, this should have been the first thing that disqualified her since that was the end of her education.

Let me be the next person to pile on you for this but AOC is nowhere near as far left as MTG is far right. Not even remotely close to "counter balancing." MTG is a 10 pound weight and AOC is a five pound weight on the seesaw. They don't balance.

I mean if anyone who voted for her didn’t see that coming from her prior record they should have their eyes examined.

They elected her. It was pretty obvious who she was. It’s not like she misrepresented herself in any way. Nobody had a reason to believe she was going to update to Anne Taylor hill wardrobe when she showed up and mind her manners.

She ran on who she was and that’s what the voters wanted. Your beef should be with the voters if you have one- not her IMO.

I agree she represents her constituents as from what I have read they are very big 2A voters. That is fine and expected. What I am complaining about is not her politics it is that she doesn't follow the rules. I don't walk into her bar and complain that people are open carrying, that is allowed. Just like she shouldn't take a gun onto the House floor since it isn't allowed. Another "rules are good if I agree with them" type IMO and a grandstander.

According to govtrack.us, Barbara Lee is the most liberal (or least conservative) representative. Mark Meadows is the most conservative.
Kurt Schrader (D-OR) and Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) are the median. But the average is Cynthia Axne (D-ID), who is the 201st most conservative rep, but according to govtrack she sponsors bills and resolutions that are halfway between Meadows and Lee.

Cortez is 421. Tlaib is 428. Omar is 429. Pressley is 433rd. My personal rep, McGovern, is 418th.

Their scale for Senators ranges from Blackburn the most conservatives to the VP. Kamala is more liberal in bills sponsored than Bernie. Markey is also more liberal than Warren.
Murkowski is the average, but 56th most conservative, while Doug Jones was the median.

Can a fair weather mountain biker really call themselves a mountain biker? I’ve done it where my camelback hose is frozen by the top of the first climb and also wearing the lightest thing I can find. Done it where I had to replace nearly every pivot point after the race. First weekends in Jan/Feb/Mar is always a crapshoot. Also done Fool’s Gold several times and those trails are relatively tame imo. Was a bit behind a guy who dislocated his hip coming down Bull. Pretty sure that caused Eddie to give up the race and Lisa took it over. Pure gravel grinding isn’t my thing. They are the conduit to get between single track trails. GL at Cross!

Or rather a hard time getting that assigned *to* a committee.

I envision Pelosi giving her a big, fake plastic shit-eating "smile" and pointing where Rep. Greene can leave the bill for her to "review."

My game is as good as it gets, I don’t have the keyboard skills as most of the LR kids.
My opinion NW ga up along I -75 Rome & Dalton and butts up to Chattanooga is a little different than NE ga., don’t really know why.
NE Ga is a little more connected to the lower southern end of Appalachia.
With the poorer folks there is a fair amount high end lake & Mtn communities.

I’ve seen more bears (1), wild boar (2), and coyotes (a lot) in my yard than I have ever seen on the NoGA trails, thankfully. Recently we’ve had multiple sightings of a bobcat. Maybe I should stop feeding them. I did see the largest rattlesnake I’ve ever seen in my life during Fool’s Gold one year. Just passed through the Bull parking lot back into the single track on top of the hill and the rider in front of me slammed on his brakes. A super fat 3-4 footer stretched across the trail, but since I don’t like snakes I remember it being more like 10ft. Fried nerves the rest of the day.

It is a serious problem with the Republican party that they have not kicked her out yet.

Here she is responding positively to someone claiming that Hillary Clinton filleting a child's face. A child's face.

Not to mention her believing the shooting at Stoneman Douglas was a false flag. Fucking kids were murdered and she thinks that he parents are lying about their children being murdered.

Sorry, late to the conversation, and this has nothing to do with anything, but I get a chuckle out of the fact that my Aunt's (My mother's only sister) name is Marjorie Green.

Sadly she no longer with us to tease about it.

It’s even crazier that she filmed the encounter herself and turns up the camera to speak to the audience. She’s not ashamed of herself. This is normal behavior in her world.

I respectfully disagree. I hope no one is inspired by Lauren Boebert.

I think it’s unfortunate that she got pregnant in high school and dropped out. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Her recovery from that setback isn’t particularly awesome. Getting a GED is nice, but she didn’t reach for the stars and get a 2-year or 4-year college degree. She missed out on the joy of learning and the satisfaction that comes from attaining a higher education. She doesn’t know how empowering it is to be fully educated or trained.

Katie Porter is a single mother of three, lawyer and member of Congress. She has her shit together. As a feminist, I’m super impressed with her.

Lauren Boebert has a history of multiple violations of the law. I think I read somewhere that her dad is a lawyer, so perhaps he helped her avoid any serious repercussions for her legal troubles.

I think it’s crazy that Boebert is in Congress ostensibly writing laws when she clearly cannot comply with the law and apparently doesn’t understand that laws protect the safety and welfare of all citizens. That might explain why she thinks it’s appropriate to bring her gun into the Capitol in violation of the law.

I’ve read that her restaurant served bad food and gave 80 people diarrhea. It’s not surprising that she doesn’t understand food safety and health code requirements. The chick just doesn’t know a lot.

The American Dream is starting with little and working hard to achieve goals. It’s being rewarded for hard work.

Boebert is an example of the Entitlement Dream. She’s unqualified but she’s blind to it. She doesn’t set a good example for anyone, much less young girls.

There has never been a law in United States history that requires an elected official of the country to take the oath of office with a Bible or any other religious text. The United States Constitution actually states "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States.” Why does the Constitution specifically say this? The Framers of the Constitution valued the separation of church versus state.

This is why I continue to claim that it isn't just some cute little group of 1 in 10000 folks who think like this. It takes a lot more than that to route a person to being a representative, win an election, and continue their rise. You vet people. You make sure there are things that don't make them unelectable. Not only did enough people go "ahhh screw it" with that, enough people also voted and said "ahh fuck it", and now enough people everywhere at all levels are still going "ahh screw it".

You can't justify that it's "just a few in the GOP" when we keep seeing this over and over and over and over. School shooting deniers, Qanon, election fakers, folks pushing rapist parental rights. You connect all the dots on all those separate items to how much energy it takes to elect a national level representative..............................it encompasses a LOT more than "just a few in the GOP".

The adults used to run the GOP and kept this shit more in the closet and out of mainstream politics and representation. Somebody these days isn't just asleep at the wheel, they're gleefully high on meth and plowing forward. I literally pray that somebody at some point finally throws the stop sticks in the road and puts an end to the crazy train.

I think she is just modeling her behavior after Trump's since it worked for him. I think we're going to see even more legislators acting like that - either because it is their true nature that they no longer need to hide, or because it is effective.

The wife usually doesn't make strong statements about this stuff, despite having strong feelings about it.

The other day I questioned the mental state of a lot of these folks these days. Qanon, believing the election is fake, etc...... Not Republicans, not even necessarily Trump voters. Just the whole "believe and spread bullshit because you want to live in an alternate reality". She basically said "Don't you dare let those people off with the presumption they have a mental illness. That's a cop-out. We're just afraid of confronting the reality of the true character of many of these people."

She's right. We would always growing up label folks "a bit crazy". Like my grandmother, the super vocal racist. "She's just a bit crazy". The reality was we were too afraid or lazy to confront their character.

Given some of the recent trends in violent protest and rhetoric, I can't believe any longer it's "too afraid". It's boiling down to "too lazy".

And the separation by Covid has allowed a really rapid festering of it.

So, where do we start? It's an education question, it's a communication question too. But (and I know that isn't a popular idea) do we need to rethink what freedom of speech means in a world where all ideas, even the craziest that endanger others can be disseminated to easily, so fast, etc? How do we stop QAnon?

I know some here will jump on me for writing this comment above, but 20 years after a failed attempt to take down a plane with explosive in shoes, we are still removing our shoes...This QAnon stuff is far more dangerous.

When we break bread with family we start breaking a few eggs and beating them so we get to the omelets. I think too long we've kept out mouths politely shut. You can't make omelets without first breaking the eggs, beating them, and using some fire on them in a pan.

If you've got the racist or conspiracy theorist in the family, it's time. I'm not talking on the internet, I'm talking at Easter lunch. Or Thanksgiving, whatever.

Don't leave friendships or relationships or family with an "Irish goodbye". It's time to make it apparent you're leaving the party because of poor character.

Also, if people are totally unappologetic..........I think cancel culture needs to catch fire and burn with the intensity of a smelter. I get the negative consequences of that, there will be innocent victims along the way. But acting/living like a lot of these people do without consequences has to stop. In the US the most immediate ways to get people's attention is their wallets. Turn off the spigot at their businesses or work.

At first I was a bit appalled at some of the cancel culture, as a lot of unfortunate victims of it were mostly highlighted. I'm starting to change my mind. At least give it a college try to get it right first, and give the chance of redemption. But in the case of people like Marjorie.........too late.

I feel like I am in a unique position to comment on this topic. I am Jewish (at least culturally, not religiously). I am also an orbital systems engineer who has helped design a number of space craft that actually do have lasers on them.

I WISH we could do the things she suggested we are doing (well, the transferring solar power part). Sadly it is in the realm of science fiction. It's GOOD science fiction though! But fiction nonetheless.

As for starting a fire to clear land for a railroad... why on earth would we try to route a railroad through mountains when there is plenty of flat terrain available?

jharris was sharing his personal experience in WI where those evil Antifa & BLM'ers damn near burned the town down while the rest of y'all are trying to push facts. No wonder there's no unity.

People believe that facts are essential for earning the respect of political adversaries, but our research shows that this belief is wrong. We find that sharing personal experiences about a political issue—especially experiences involving harm—help to foster respect via increased perceptions of rationality.

I do remember that, but that was the Dems. The GOP just pretends the crazies do not exist and continue on as if nothing is happening.

One of the few who have spoked up is Mitt Romney. Greene bragged this morning about talking to Trump on the phone and having his support. Romney's response

“Lies of a feather flock together: Marjorie Taylor Greene’s nonsense and the â€big lie’ of a stolen election.”

jharris wants us to listen and learn from people who are too cowardly to expel this anti-Semitic nut.

It should be know that different members associated with the riots inside the capitol have been elevated within the gop.

The gop has done nothing to attempt to unify the country in around 12 years. (Since McCain)

Some House GOP also trying to remove Omar from committees. Not because she's done or said anything "wrong" recently, just as punishment for the Democrats trying to remove Marjorie...both sides, etc.

I read an article about that. That is all sorts of messed up. The GOP can't afford to alienate any voters (except for rioting non-voters) but they are doing their best. They may lose my vote for all R candidates if this is the path that they chose.

One nice thing about my state is that as an independent I can actually vote in either (but not both) primary elections. As of last month, I left the “r” party and registered as an independent. I plan to still vote for the best, most sane, least Q-anon affiliated republican candidate, but will not feel bad at all voting democrat in the future if the republicans continue down their current path.

My wife was just complaining how much she disliked Greene. I actually am very glad she is there. Now the GOP has to address the giant steaming pile in the middle of the carpet. If she wasn't there most of them would just step around the mess and pretend the Q debacle had nothing to do with their voters.

It is their only way to move forward and this helps speed that along. Of course, they may be out of office for awhile but it has to be done.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

McCarthy’s lack of a spine now puts the onus on the Dems to strip Greene of her Committee assignments. So the Republicans will then blame the Democrats for trying to shut her up instead of cleaning up their own mess. Not sure if that’s brilliant or stupid.

I've had a similar thoughts on the long term intelligence of the no spine strategy that has defined the GQP since 2016.

I'm not sure how being a moral coward or failing to exclude kooks from the caucus is good for the party, but McCarthy (Q- CA) seems to think that is his best play.

I think he and the rest of the GQP have lost their collective minds, in addition to their spines. But these seeds were sown years ago and any voter paying attention left the party.

McCarthy is brilliant? stupid? or without spine? The fact that he came to the rescue of Cheney while allowing the Georgia Peach a pass puts him in the at least "he's not stupid" class as he tries to walk the line with the GOP to his left and your christened GQP to his right. Without question, he is without spine. But there is no way to assign brilliance to him either. He is merely a politician who understands he is in a party where quite a few his voters are in fact not paying attention.

I get what you are trying to say with the bolded, but I don’t think that is accurate. Give me a single-issue voter who cares about what MTG says. Even the religious who should be appalled at her can fall back on the abortion excuse. People like MTG have figured out she has an infinity leash in her party as most of the R voters who are paying attention are locked in on their hatred for anything “libtard”. Unfortunately that won’t change until the likes of McConnell, Graham, and now McCarthy are long gone.

Just look at Windy. An apparent 'moderate' Republican, who "fucking detests the left" (in his words), even though Biden's policies are probably more closely aligned with his own than Trump's were.

But when you view everything through partisan lenses, it's hard to see the wood for the trees.

I've said it for a while. After the civil rights era there were a lot of progressive changes in the country. A lot of people felt "left behind" by those changes one way or another. Quietly for two decades the diseases of "machismo" patriarchy, racism, vitriolic language, and bitterness have built a fever that was unleased on the world in the Trump era.

These people have always been there. It was really non-PC and really unacceptable to be like these people for those two decades. And suddenly it isn't. Those deplorables like MTG were given an excessive voice.

And now we're having to address it.

I just really hope it doesn't turn into a really disorganized and borderless version of the Irish "troubles" era.

There is nothing else there. And the House GOP is all in with it. A poll test is reasonable. But what would be better is to push civics and US government back into classroom. Currently, 9 states have one year of civics in HS. 30 have 1/2 a year, and 11 have nothing at all.
And there is no reason, you can't discuss civics earlier. Middle school is fine.

She actually says, "I was allowed to believe things that weren’t true". She then says she believed it because she did not think congress was doing what it should have been doing. So this is really congress's fault.

Interesting. This article has similar stats and they have a map of civics instruction and testing.

Based upon a sample size of a few states with wingnut congressional reps/senators, I fail to see a strong correlation. (I'm looking at you Florida and Alabama.)

As a Floridan, I can tell you that we never took exams on Civics when I was in school. We usually focused on American made products like Fords and Chevys.

Example. If your F-150 gets 8 miles per gallon and you have 3 gallons of gas in your tank and $15 dollars in your wallet. How much money do you have left over to by Red Man after buying gas to travel the 50 miles to your girlfriend's trailer?

After these state GOP censures of people acting decently, I’m curious to see what it will take for people to leave the GOP.

Has anyone here renounced their affiliation with the GOP in the last year? I’d like to know details— even just basic: how, when, why. No judging, I promise.

Leaving the GOP seems like a pretty strong statement (and also reversible). What needs to happen before there is truly a mass exodus?

Also, is the GOP just censuring everyone that doesn't vote the party line? Well functioning organizations usually allow or even invite some level of disagreement amongst its members. Punishing dissenting votes/opinions is bad management 101.

I'm a GOP-registered voter in the State of Maryland. My family (from Delaware) has been heavily involved in Republican politics for years (grandmother was an alternate delegate at 1964 presidential election, for instance...). Through college I became more centrist in my views, but held onto my registration primarily to vote in primaries because while Reps don't do well nationally here in MD, at a local level in matters especially for gubernatorial and county executive-type positions.

I'm not sure what leaving the party would do other than be symbolic at this point, for me anyway as I vote all over the place. Publicly I've been more anti-Rep than any other point in my life, but I still believe in the supposedly core values of measured, slow change, fiscal and personal responsibility, etc. (not that our current GOP exhibits a hint of any of that.at the national level..).

"When and why" was during the run-up to the election and the support of disenfranchisement over and above the normal gerrymandering (though it's interesting to note as a GOP'er I'm a victim of g-mandering in MD), the purposeful destruction of the USPS, and then everything that happened after the election.

I've never really gotten worked up about politics. I was so upset on January 6th my wife was afraid I was going to get into a fist fight.

So, I guess my decision is that I will never vote for anyone that exhibits the attributes of the Trump republican or supports Trump, locally or nationally.

I can always burn my voter card if it makes everyone feel better...

Something I've noticed is Trumpers labeling non-Trumpers as RINO's that somehow need to be driven out of the GOP, while the Trumpers are reluctant to leave the GOP even though they keep throwing the idea of things like forming a Trump-supporting "Patriot Party" around.

I guess it's tough to leave that whole GOP brand recognition, fundraising apparatus, "RINO" voter base etc behind despite all their rhetoric.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Mike.

I saw a news story that 33,000 Republicans in CA have left the GOP since Jan 6. Because it’s easy enough to re-register to be re-affiliated with the GOP later, I wondered if leaving now would send a strong message to GOP leadership. It seems like a stronger message than sending them an email or tweeting about it.

My in-laws are traditional Republicans, not Trump Republicans. I have never felt closer and more loving toward them than this year. It broke my heart to see how angry and stressed they were during September, October and November. They’re 87-ish. They were livid. Sleepless. I think and hope they’re doing better now.

I hope you’re not still experiencing the stress of your anger. I had a friend whose fiancé cheated on him, and he had a ceremonial burning of stuff she had given him. Ceremonies can be powerful, but I certainly don’t need you to burn your card to feel better myself. Your ceremonies should be geared to your own healing.

I’m kind of embarrassed to say that I shouted “fuck Trump” as loud as I could while running trails this fall. I really had so much anger. It’s mostly gone now. I still hate what he’s done and continues to do, but I’m not overwhelmed by it like I was before.

Yep. That has occurred to me on another forum I belong to. I told them that if being a Republican means that I have to support a lying con man and be happy about what happened at the capitol then they can have it.

The Trumpers are numerous and loud. I say let them have the Republican party because they've soiled it so much that independents and moderate Dems will not want anything to do with it.

I hope that corporations will quite donating money to the trump Republicans and all who showed their cowardice with their impeachment votes. That will get their attention more than anything else.

I switched my party affiliation to Dem last week after being a registered Repub in Florida for the past twenty years.

I was never a Trump supporter (voted Clinton in 2016 and Biden in 2020), but I generally voted R down the ballot every election.

Up until 2016, I thought that the Republicans were the party of the grownups: Rational, had integrity, and had the US's best interests in mind. But after Trump got elected and the party leaders began to sidle up to him (if not outright pledge their fealty to him), it was obvious what the party's true intentions had become: Maintain power.

I don't have time to write up or articulate all that the Republicans will have to do to earn my respect and affiliation again, but in a nutshell:

1) Leave no room for interpretation that the party will no longer make QAnon or white supremacist groups have a home with a major political party.

2) Stop trying to disenfranchise minority voters. It may cost the party over the next couple of elections, but take control of the message and let it be known that voting rights for all Americans is a high priority.

3) Stop cozying up to evangelicals to push this narrative that the Rs are the party of values, honor, integrity, etc.

4) Either be about fiscal responsibility or shut the fuck up it.

5) Do some serious soul searching and figure out why half the country doesn't care what Republicans have to say anymore.

This is by all means an N=1 experience, but I'm just not seeing that here. In fact, my parents seem to have dug in their heels and are more firm in their belief that it was Antifa that fomented the insurrection last month and not a pre-planned attack. They're no longer on Facebook "due to censorship of conservative thought" and get their information from "patriot" news sources (I've heard her mention Newsmax and OAN. I'm not terribly familiar with either of them, other than their reputation).

I'm also seeing a lot of number stickers with references to QAnon that I never noticed before the election. White rabbits with a "Q" and others with something like "Where We Go One, We Go All," or some such nonsense.

All that being said, political discourse has gotten a bit more polite. I don't think Righties are as emboldened to say whatever they want now that their guy has left the White House. In fact, outside of the British expat that I work with, I'd say there hasn't been a single mention of politics since January 20th.

Pre-Trump GOP had Michelle Bachman, who for all her crazy conducted herself like a church lady, relatively speaking. It's no coincidence that the new era "conservative" culture warriors are making their name by being as obnoxious and confrontational as the party leader. This isn't going away any time soon, in part because it sells with the base, and in part because the GOP is largely a gaggle of unprincipled cowards.

At the risk of being accused of propagating a false equivalency, there's some reeling in of the far-left (policies, words, and actions) to do as well before we'll see true unity again. Brandon's suggestions are a great start for the GOP. For starters on the Dem side, I'm talking tamping down:
  1. The hyper-aggressive woke cancel culture that has over-corrected for every single legitimate grievance by minority or underserved groups. Just because I'm a Rep white male with a good job who lives in the suburbs doesn't make me an selfish, evil, homophobic, bigot.
  2. The Great Green Hypocrisy - we should all strive for a better, cleaner planet, just don't ask me to not fly in my private plane, live in my 3500 sq.ft. house or drive to work in my 18 mpg Lexus SUV. How about adding some teeth to the Paris accords, rather than just patting ourselves on the back?
  3. The violent fringes of BLM/Antifa/etc. Just because Trump used them as a go-to boogeyman for everything, doesn't mean we don't need to be rid of them. Just as we should be prosecuting every single one of those fuckwads that entered the Capitol, we should do the same that have destroyed people's businesses or government property while flying the flag of a legitimate cause.
  4. Throwing money at education with no accountability, student loan forgiveness, pandering to teacher's unions (who are pulling a McConnell-level obstruction of getting kids back in schools)

If you're trying to understand the moderate Republican, the above is why a large number of people held their noses and voted for Trump 2016 and even in 2020 (for what it's worth, like Brandon I didn't in either case). Unfortunately opposing those things got you lumped in with the evangelical and white nationalist (or both) wackos and here the Republican party is.

I voted for Biden as both an anti-Trump message and because I believed he would lead from the center and provide competence in the Executive branch, so we can start debating policy from the center as well.

I was with you until the bolded. Just as everyone talks about painting all GOPers with the Trump brush, many, if not most, on the right paint all teachers with the Chicago/LA/NYC teacher's union brush. The vast, vast majority of teachers want to go back to school or are already back. However, they do want it with the same safety and security precautions any worker wants when they return. The comments are always, the kids need to be back in school, and I agree with this, but there is little to no concern with the teachers when these comments are made.

My wife has been back in school since the beginning of January and has had to do an excessive amount of work for the kids who either get quarantined or their parents decide to go on vacation since any kid can work virtually now. Her average work week since going back has been 70 - 80 hours. I know this is not typical but I do know an awful lot of teachers going way above and beyond so all of their students are getting an education when the conditions are not optimal.

Finally, look at the state of Indiana. If there is a state who puts less emphasis on education and more on screwing over their public school teachers, I don't know which one it would be. In PA, it was a major concern to get kids back in school so teachers were given priority for the vaccination. In Indiana, they keep getting pushed further down the line.

  4. Throwing money at education with no accountability, student loan forgiveness, pandering to teacher's unions (who are pulling a McConnell-level obstruction of getting kids back in schools)

I would describe myself as center-left, and I am with you on this (perhaps with the exception of the teacher union thing, which isn't really the case in most of the country).

The fringes of both parties need to be excised. It's unfortunate that the "fringe belief" on the Republican side is a actual large portion of the party. I might even say it's a majority. Perhaps that ship can be righted though over the next couple of years.

In Maryland, teachers have vaccine priority and yet their unions are refusing to budge, continuing to move the goalposts. I don't fault teachers for having concerns, and I'm not painting most teachers with that brush. And I really appreciate those that are going above and beyond to make the best of what is there. Just what I'm seeing here locally.

Let's cross out the COVID issue and discuss teachers' unions as a whole, as I was just pointing out an example. I'm more concerned of the "throw more money at education without any accountability for results" attitude the the unions demand. The teaching profession should be elevated as a whole, from education to qualifications to certifications to salary, rewarding great teachers and training-up or dismissing bad ones. Unions have no interest in that. Well except the more money part.

This isn't going away any time soon, in part because it sells with the base, and in part because the GOP is largely a gaggle of unprincipled cowards.

It is worse than you think.

Representative Newman has the office across the hall from her. Rep Newman has a transgender daughter and put up a trans pride flag up for that.

So yes, it is even worse than it appears.

I think that is overall the problem with the gop. The fringe on the gop is the controlling faction (and probably the majority).

In the senate, the controlling faction of the Dems is actually right of center. And Biden is center left. Pelosi in the house is also fairly moderate, or at least doesn’t give into the left wing.

In the senate during the trump years, a couple of center leaning gop members could have kept the party in the center but they all decided to retire. What is left is around 30 gop senators that are hard right (opposed to around 10-12 hard left, which also include 2-3 that are actually right leaning. Kelly, manchin, sinema. Tester. King. ).

I am encouraged that you have not been accused of resorting to a false equivalent in your post. Reeling in, or if you will marginalizing, the margins on both ends of the political spectrum has to be job #1 right now. We have always owned ,and will always own, a population of folks who exist happily out in the margins in their cults . It is just that their voices are now amplified with overwhelming media access and their hearing is dominated by their own echos.

While there is no going back to the public square, soapbox and megaphone to limit the voice of the margins, we do need to modulate better both the amplitude and frequency of their cries.

Years back I used to watch America's Funniest Home Videos. They would occasionally show videos of some toddler or kid who was unbelievably disrespectful to adults - and people would laugh at it. It made me cringe, but they thought it was funny.

Trump is the toddler, and a lot of his supporters are the ones who laugh at his childish, disrespectful antics and encourage him to do more. Now, other toddlers have found their way into office. It is disgraceful.

1. As someone who used to be not so understanding of various marginalized groups I have learned a lot in the last few years. I agree there are large portions of white males in the suburbs who are "woke" and they should not be painted with a broad brush
2. I see the retooling of America's power infrastructure as a huge economic opportunity that will create jobs, give America a competitive advantage, and reduce the importance of countries like Saudi Arabia. I have zero problem with people flying or driving gas guzzlers in the meantime. Industry will eventually provide alternatives that are better and do not pollute.
3. It is indeed the violent fringe. Anarchists' and criminal gangs who take advantage of peaceful protests should be put down hard.
4. I don't know about the teachers union stuff as that is state and locality specific. Totally agree on student loan forgiveness. I am open to some forgiveness but we should focus on making education more affordable and available before we toss more money at it.

trump was not the first though, he was part of a clear progression. Look at lots of the tea party group, like Jim Jordan. The right wing feed back loop of politicians and media had already been established to that rewarded childish behavior over any sort of actual governing. trump just added to the feedback loop.

Even if you don't agree with AOC's policy proposals, at least she has policy proposals that are meant to address real problems. She also clearly does the homework before people are brought before committee hearings, she asks substantive questions in order. She does not just go on long political speeches that are tangentially related to the topic. She actually cares about legislation. She is much more of a grown up than these Republicans.

Also AOC will be much more critical of Biden than these people were ever of trump.

Compare that Madison Cawthorn, who actually says he built his staff around communication and not legislation.

You know exactly how I feel about MTG, so don't misunderstand this post. I had only seen MTG's tweet and thought it was what I had come to expect from her. I didn't realize it was in response to Newman's tweet 4 hour earlier, until I saw that tweet this morning and was disappointed.

This is from Rep Newman's twitter:

Quote:
Our neighbor,
@RepMTG
, tried to block the Equality Act because she believes prohibiting discrimination against trans Americans is “disgusting, immoral, and evil.” Thought we’d put up our Transgender flag so she can look at it every time she opens her door

MTG's twitter had this response and video:

Quote:
Our neighbor,
@RepMarieNewman
, wants to pass the so-called "Equality" Act to destroy women’s rights and religious freedoms. Thought we’d put up ours so she can look at it every time she opens her door

Recommend that you watch the twitter video in both links as MTG mimics Newman's actions.

We've elected children to represent us. And I see wrestling with a pig and getting dirty.

I am closer to Newman than MTG on this issue, but I don't think I am 100% aligned with her either. It is complicated issue, that isn't as clear in my head as I would like it to be to before engaging in a debate on the issue.

That said, It doesn't have anything to do with the issue. It has everything to do with how our representatives chose to handle disagreements.

I don't approve of how Newman chose to respond to MTG's objections to the bill in the first tweet. I found MTG's tweet boorish and offensive. And then I realized she was mimicking Newman's tweet.

Should my view of Newman's handling of the difference in their position on the issue be any different than that I had formed of MTG?

(MTG, admittedly, comes into this with much baggage, so again I wasn't surprised by her poor response. But Newman doesn't bring that same baggage. No one in Congress is calling for Newman to be censured or removed from Congress for her prior actions. I think Congress would be a better place without her.)

I see Newman dropping to MTG's level of pettiness. There are better ways to fight a good fight.

I used to expect that our elected officials would handle disagreements professionally, now I am surprised when they do.

Suffer Well.

To a degree, I do think you're propagating a false equivalency. The issues I have with the current GOP are their actual platform. It's not an effective counterpoint to identify individuals on the left, ascribe their views and behaviors to the Democratic Party as a whole and say everyone's equally bad.

MikeH in MD wrote:

  1. The hyper-aggressive woke cancel culture that has over-corrected for every single legitimate grievance by minority or underserved groups. Just because I'm a Rep white male with a good job who lives in the suburbs doesn't make me an selfish, evil, homophobic, bigot. What are we actually talking about here? College campuses not inviting provocative speakers (who in some cases are provocative in the best sense and in some cases are just dumb)? Hollywood blacklisting actors for being a bit rapey? Private employers regulating their employees behaviors? Whatever you think of these - and reasonable people can certainly differ - they are not the actions of the Democratic Party, unless you deliberately conflate the two.

This is the one that really gets my goat. The standing for worrying about the national debt is not whether you voluntarily overpay your taxes every year down to the last cent you have available. People always prioritize their family's well being over their broader societal goals. It's human nature. The fact particular politicians or climate activists don't model perfect behavior doesn't make the climate policy goals of the Democratic Party hypocritical. For the policy goals of the Democratic Party to be hypocritical they'd have to actively court the vote of those who are concerned about the environment but not follow through on the policy agenda they promise in doing so. By and large I think they avoid that trap. You may disagree (and I certainly don't think the policy is aggressive enough), but that's a separate discussion. By contrast the GOP are inherently hypocritical, without addressing the behavior of any particular politician, because they pretend to be the party of fiscal responsibility but as soon as they're in power they deliberately and predictably run up the national debt to favor their preferred interests.

Sure, absolutely. But make the case for me why this is a Democratic Party issue. I'm sure you can find an inflammatory quote from a house member or two but show me where the leadership of the party endorsed or encouraged this behavior? (Again, contrast and compare).

  4. Throwing money at education with no accountability, student loan forgiveness, pandering to teacher's unions (who are pulling a McConnell-level obstruction of getting kids back in schools) Too much to write on this one but my starting point is not being a fan of unions in the public sector or student loan forgiveness (without paired efforts to trim cost increases). So I suspect we actually agree on this.

Fair. But she directed he show of support for her child at MTG, who has made herself well known for being offensive and willing to do and say anything. It was at best equal parts show of support and picking a fight with a "pig."

If it was a show of support only, she could have framed it was such in her tweet. Something like "I've put a transgender flag out in front of my office as a sign of solidary and support of the Equality Act" Instead, she decided to begin the wrestling when she tweeted this "Our neighbor, @RepMTG , tried to block the Equality Act because she believes prohibiting discrimination against trans Americans is “disgusting, immoral, and evil. Thought we’d put up our Transgender flag so she can look at it every time she opens her door"

She clearly wanted to pick a fight on twitter with MTG. So MTG gave her one.

There are better ways to fight the good fight than doing so on Twitter if you are a Congressional Rep. No issue with Newman's point of view or her support of her child, but rather the forum and method she chose to do it.

I understand transgender now is a touchy subject. Personally I don’t understand it. If people want to be transgender have at it. (I have some issues when it comes to sports not to bathrooms).

However, at this juncture in life being pro transgender is very different than be agnostic (which I am) which is also very different than being anti transgender.

If the words and actions taken dealt with other prosecuted groups in history, ones actions are totally fine and another person replicating those actions is not.

If I put out a flag saying “gays have rights” (even if I am rubbing it in your face) and someone else put out a confederate flag saying “real Patriots have rights” (and rubs it in my face) ones actions would be ok and one would not.

I don’t know why this is the case or why society treats things that way. But that’s just how it is.

If I say I am pro civil rights and you say you are pro Jim Crow laws even if we handle everything exactly the same. They are not equal actions.

She wasn't just showing support for her child; she was throwing it in MTG's face. She should expect MTG to respond in kind and to up the outrage factor. Doesn't make what MTG did right, but Newman could have simply put up the flag and then posted her support without implicating MTG at all.

Edit: Meh. Late to the party. I see your response above to a similar post. Point is well-taken, but did anyone really expect MTG not to respond the way she did? Just another opportunity to let her pander to the prejudices of her deplorable base. A better strategy would be to simply not invite her into the fray in the first place.

I don’t know where or when this was posted, but here’s a post by MTG doing target practice while apparently thinking about the Socialist Squad.

Perhaps I misunderstood your point but it is clear who the child is here.

Not trying to "both sides" this one. As above, I saw MTG's tweet yesterday and found it boorish and offensive. Then I saw Newman's tweet this morning and only then realized MTG was mimicking Newman.

That forced me to reconsider MTG's tweet. I still found it offensive. So what should I conclude of the tweet she was mimicking? I found that it was disappointing.

And like I said, Newman chose to wrestle with a pig. She got dirty. And the pig likes it.

I do not see how showing support for her child and the bill she was voting on today is wrestling with a pig.

People like Greene want to pretend that Trans people do not exist.

History has show that letting people pander to their prejudices is a good thing.

Southern Sheriffs turning dogs and water hoses on peaceful protestors and harassing kids trying to attend schools forced America to take a side in the civil rights era. Most chose the side of justice.

Hateful faux Christians spewing lies about gays forced people to pick a side. Americans overwhelmingly chose the side of love and equality.

The same choice is happening right now with trans people. It is a confusing topic but when one side is spewing hate and misinformation it makes it much easier to listen and understand the side preaching love and empathy.

No disagreement. Clearly Newman directed her support of the issue at MTG to get a reaction from MTG. She got one.

She stood up to a hateful bully in a manner that fed into the hateful bully responding gleefully.

I'd call that wrestling with a pig- where you get dirty and the pig likes it.

But it is hard to ignore when she is allowed access to the floor of the House. This past week she has made repeated (4) motions to adjourn debate on legislation forcing members to the well to cast votes. She is pissing off even her republican congress peoples ( the count is now up to 40 ) as they have voted down her motions.

Motorcycling and fly fishing thru North Georgia. Before COVID what I'd do is head up there on MON when everyone else had to go to work. I'd set up camp and fly fish TUE-THU and then head back home on FRI . As I was driving back out of the mountains there were lines of working folk heading up for their weekend.

Steve pretty much has her constituency nailed, although a little too far east with Dahlonega.
I remember a radio skit(99x) from just after Bush was re-elected where the Intern - Fat Kid went up to Rome, GA(MTGs people) and impersonated a Marshall or ATF agent claiming the 2nd amendment had been repealed and he was there to collect her guns. Not only did this woman seem to buy it, but her response was, I sh*t you not, "You can't take my guns, I need my guns, I have enemies". This is who I visualize when I see MTG. These people fall for stuff like that and they have now fallen for her BS, because she is one of them.

She should not be ignored. She needs confronted and defeated.

We've tried ignoring the idiots. With the internet they find each other and think they are the majority opinion then multiply. It is much better to shine the light on the cockroaches and hit them with Raid.

We also need to not let the worst among us make each other enemies. The differences between most of us are not great. But bad actors have figured out how to get into the cracks and make it seem like we have nothing in common and get us to attack each other when in fact we should be attacking them. So we have farmers thinking the relief bill is unfair to them and reparations to blacks, poor people thinking other poor people are the reason they are poor, people squawking about Dr. Seuss, Pepe LePew, and plastic potato packaging. Years of campaigns based on gay marriage, gays in the military, men in women's bathrooms and women's sports. All the things that don't really matter.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

take a drive thru N Ga and talk to MTG's constituents

Way back in the day---back when I was going thru Ranger School. So early 80s. The Ranger Instructors (RIs) who lived and worked up there at Camp Merrill. The RIs told us----"don't talk to the locals. Just leave them alone" Back then it was mostly moonshine i guess?

We'd do a ambush exercise on some lonely mountain road or trail and then move off into the dark. Within minutes you'd see the lights of trucks and cars as locals drove up to police up all the brass we left behind. I gather they sold it for scrap metal or melted it and formed it into some touristy crap they'd sell to rich folk coming up from Atlanta on weekends?

Countless other times running into Rangers training on the mountain. In both areas, completely agree MTG is representing the local sentiment. That in no way forces others to have to put up with it. Nope, he's open water reef and troll kinda guy. 3 boats. One is a 38' catamaran that is his bug-out sailboat when he's done at FLETC and goes on pension and retires to the open ocean life. He knows all about power systems, navigation, engines, all that stuff but not sailing (he describes his boat as having this big metal stick on it that was convenient for his Trump 2020 flag) so I've got that covered being a former sailboat racer. I teach him how to sail, he teaches me how to shoot straight.

I'm no sailor but I've been on a few nice sail boats

back in the day--down in Panama before the 'war.' Rich folk needed guys to help crew their yacht thru the Panama Canal. So we'd put our name and phone number up on the old cork B-Board in the Balboa Yacht Club. Twice it worked out for me that i wasn't in the jungle doing Army stuff and some guy needed help crewing a yacht thru the canal

the deal was you were there to man a rope on a pulley while the yacht locked up and down thru the systems on either side of the canal. While transiting Gatun Lake (no sailing allowed---only diesel power) well then you drank beer and enjoyed the sites. If you were lucky this rich old dude had some nice eye candy on the vessel with him.

I did it twice on two different yachts. Both Euro guys with very nice yachts. We kept the boat in the middle of the locks so nothing got damaged going up or coming down.

Sorry, I meant her rhetoric is wearing thin on other party members and will soon have them working to rid the party of her and her ilk, even if quietly behind the scenes.

I'm not as optimistic as you are. At least regarding the qualifier "soon"...

No way that was her, though. That's a staffer's fault. Way too much use of fact (intermixed with fantasy, but still a lot of fact) and documentation of sources. She did not write this.

But some of the lines are hilarious. Like suggesting the Dr. Fauci urging people not to wear masks (for the brief period when he did) was "negligent at best."

When MGT has been stridently anti-mask all along. There's no attempt at all at self-consistency.

The whole thing is hilarious.

We agree she didn't write it- the was the first clue was it wasn't in red crayon.

But she's responsible for hiring stupid fuckwits as staffers. And not proof reading a document from her office. Or having a clue about the calendar.

She's an embarrassment. And the people in her district will likely re-elect her.

Suffer Well.

It is harder to be consistent when multiple people are are writing the narrative.
