It does not catch my butterfly stroke either. Either I suck at it, or something is not right with the algorithm in the watch.

Who do I contact about this for help?

Do you train with anyone who you could have test it for you? If it behaves the same way with someone else, then that would indicate a problem with the watch. If it works fine for someone else, you would want to look for any idiosyncrasies in your swimming.

Hey Chris, swimming works like a charm for me! Good job Polar!

After a couple of months of solid training with the V800, I compiled a subjective list of what I see as the TODO-List in terms of features.
Some things are bigger and already on the official list, some are really small things that I think would greatly improve the device.
I already posted this on the official Polar facebook page, but maybe people on here want to chime in as well.

PRIORITY 1: (Major)
+) Android Support (V800 Sync)
+) 3rd Party Powermeters (for me Stages) working

PRIORITY 2:
+) Phases have option to create a lap (like the new interval timer)
+) Drag and Drop reordering of training views
+) On-device lap summary view user-configurable
+) Merge of planned vs. completed workouts in diary
+) Route planning or importing in flow
+) Open Water swimming distance (moving to priority 1 list in Spring...)

PRIORITY 3:
+) Flow workout privacy setting "anyone with the link"
+) Additional mouse-over info in diary view (dist, avgHR)
+) Ability to go from auto-pause into manual pause
+) Pause in Free Multisport without going into transition mode
+) Cycling incline without speed sensor (unless strategically omitted)
+) Running cadence without footpod (unless strategically omitted)

PRIORITY 4: (minor)
+) Datafield "Battery Level"
+) Alarm Clock with Vibrate only (no beep)
+) Multisport Sessions count towards totals of individual sports they are composed of

what do you guys think? Anything important missing?
@Chris: Is the issue 2.1 (phases being individually tracked - most simple way would be an option to have a phase create a lap) being worked on? You guys must realize that this is a major deterrent from using phased workouts, while imho everything else about them is pretty cool.

Biggest issue for me is the sound. Please make it louder. I can barely hear the device.

I would love to be able to configure how it vibrates also on alerts.

I'll ask someone to try. There is also third option: swimming recognition is not mature yet so it needs to be worked on. ;)

Its pretty mature. Maybe not in v800 but its pretty mature overall.

Chris,

I've had the chance to test pool metrics twice already and there's definitely something wrong with the distance. In both occasions the distance measured ended in an odd number when i'm finishing on the same side of the wall in both opportunities. The distance measured was also less that what I swam. I think the problem occurs during kicking sets or other non-standar strokes (i.e. drills) which may confuse the watch, although it shouldn't affect the distance as it's measured by change of direction.

If Polar works like Garmin, it's arm movement phasing that decides stroke and turn detection. The device simply will not work when doing drills.

Did another swim last night. This time the watch behaved even worse.

Did 100 yards freestyle to test watch, 75 was only counted.

Did a 100 IM, after that the watch said I had swam 924.46 yards! After the IM the watch never updated the yardage until I stopped my exercise. I ended up swimming 1452 yards...again, where is this 2 yards coming from (I can't see it in my diary)?

I uploaded the set, the total distance was 1635905 yards.

Hey Chris
I love the new updates, both what u did to the watch and flow. One thing though; you gotta do something with the activity levels. Mine is at lvl 3 and I end up at 260-340% almost every day. My main reason for even wanting this feature is not to see how active I am( I already know that) but to make sure I don't move too much during rest days! It would be epic if the watch calculated 100% to be the average of my past 12weeks of training. This way u know that 20% is 80% less than your own average day.
The new way to show calorie consumption is awesome!

I looked at it from a different perspective. If it's an activity goal, make it a real goal which would be relative to recovery. E.g. 4 days to recover => set activity goal to 30% of normal, 3 days => 50% of normal etc.

Chris, just wanted to report an excellent encounter with Polar Customer service.

My swim metrics were not synching properly with Flow. I had a helpful call with a rep, and the problem is resolved.

Really love the swim metrics:

Hi, I also have 2 swims not syncing. What was the fix for you?

I noticed that these two swims also show an average pace of 99:59 /100m. Other swims show valid average pace and sync just fine...

Hinke,

I have a couple of questions: How do you add the stroke statistics to the Session Analysis on Polar Flow and how do you change the distance form meters or miles to yards? Do you get swim statistics (stroke count) on the watch while swimming?

Thanks

Hector

You change the distance when you select the pool swim session, then hold in the top left button.

I apologize if this has been asked and answered, but I'm using the adidas speed_cell footpod and I've been unable to figure out how to calibrate this. Prior to the update in Sept. I could do a manual calibration of the footpod, but the auto calibrate was a little iffy. Since that update I have been unable to calibrate at all. I've looked at where the setting is suppose to be for a polar stride sensor, but it's not there. I believe it should be settings -> sport profiles -> running (or treadmill running) -> stride sensor -> calibration. But I don't have the stride sensor setting in this location and I'm not sure if it's because I have the adidas footpod.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Giving some serious consideration to this watch over the 920xt. For me personally, I almost never use a watch for biking. At best, I use it as a backup data source during races in case my bike computer goes down. So I can live without the ANT+ compatibility. And I converted all my HRMs from the regular ANT+ to the Wahoo TICKR models that have dual ANT+/BT (so I could use my phone), so bluetooth HRM isn't an issue.

So mainly looking for a watch that has a battery that lasts 18-20 hours (for super long runs), swim functionality, and easy syncing with Garmin/Strava. Live tracking is a big plus for me (920 has this) as is the internal accelerometer so I can get cadence info without a foot pod, especially for gym treadmill running. What is really intriguing about the V800 is that it looks like something I can wear daily that would replace my Polar Loop for daily activity tracking. You cannot wear the 910/920 in professional settings without looking like a goofball. The 920 is basically the perfect watch for me, minus the fact that it cannot be worn daily and that I'm already integrated with the Polar activity tracking via my Polar Loop (which I love).

  1. Can anyone tell me if Strava syncing is easy yet? With the Garmin wifi sync and Strava integration, my workout is on Strava and Garmin Connect before I even get my running shoes off. It's amazing. Because I do actually go to my computer first thing and look at my workouts. Bluetooth sync is acceptable, as long as I don't have to do a bunch of downloading, file converting, and manual uploading.
  2. Is there, or will there possibly be, live tracking?
  3. I know they have a foot pod. Does this mean there is no internal accelerometer that will measure cadence for treadmills? I'd like to avoid going back to the footpod thing for that.

I've really enjoyed my V800, even if sometimes the pace of updates has been frustrated. With the latest swim update I feel like they did a great job. I picked up my V800 before the 920xt was released, but I'm still happy I did for the same reason you are considering it, the physical appearance is top notch. I didn't actually think I would wear this thing every day, but I do. I've also received a number of positive comments about the watch. The only negative comment anyone has said about it is about the large Polar logo on the front.

So,
  1. Strava syncing is not yet easy. Polar has opened up the API so it should get much easier in the near future. But right now you have to download the file and then upload it. Each file has to be downloaded individually. And last I checked you were not able to download workouts that were part of a multisport or triathlon workout, though this may have changed in the last month.
  2. There is no live tracking. It seems like it should be possible, but I'll also say the watch doesn't stay connected to a phone, you have to manually sync it. So there could be some updates to the bluetooth stack that is being used to unable a full time connection that would be necessary for live tracking. So I'd put it down as we may see it, but don't count on it.
  3. The V800 does have internal accelerators. This is how it tracks swimming and tracks activity. Thus far they have not been enabled for cadence while running. This has been requested several times.

Honestly I like dealing with my Polar V800 a lot more than I ever did my Garmin 310 XT. I went with the stages PM because it is cost effective and also measure cadence. I like having less sensors and gadgets hanging off of my bike. I've been waiting 6 months now or more for Polar to fix #1. The V800 syncs with my Stages PM. It has actually seen it since day 1. Now it syncs with it, but it simply will not report the two numbers being output. If Polar fixes this issue in the next month or two, I will probably be a customer for a long time. If this issue isn't resolved by February or so I will be forced to go back to my 310XT completely or buy a 920XT and sell both the 310 and V800. Cost wise I'm already out a lot of coin on the V800, and simply displaying two numbers from a device it can already detect shouldn't be overly difficult.

So yes, this list of priorities is good. Bringing a "triathlon" watch to market that couldn't communicate with any "bluetooth" power meter or device other than your own was a horrible idea though. I made sure to get a "bluetooth" power meter knowing I was considering and eventually bought the V800. Currently I'm still relying on my old Garmin which I could've sold long ago to report power and cadence. And since I hate extra gadgets on my bike you can imagine how irritating this is plus having to keep ANT+ junk around my computer too.

I feel at this point, Polar as a company does not understand how many potential customers they have lost or will lose unless #1 is fixed pronto. It's almost as if Polar doesn't care about triathletes but decided to sell a triathlon GPS watch anyway. Chris at this point it is just really really bad.

Did you read DC rainmakers recommendations for sports devices for this winter shopping season? I did and Polar is simply not there, and it's a shame too because when it comes to ease of use, ease of setting up fields, battery life and a lot of other important issues Polar does a great job.

Polar got my money this time, but until #1 is fixed Polar will never ever see another dime from me. You have the choice to make me a customer for life or to kick me to the curb. So far I've been kicked a few too many times. It's time to apologize, get to work and fix the situation.

Thanks, but my question is wanting to see the data in yards while reviewing the session in Polar Flow. On the watch I have the Pool Swim session already set up in yards.

With another pool swim session experiencing the same problem I now believe there's a problem when syncing.
