Anyone experience the GPS dysfunction?

I got my Polar V800 2 months ago. It works well as expected. But this morning the GPS function stops working. First, it took about 10 minutes to find the GPS signal (only showed GPS 30-40%). Even when GPS reached 100%, it was not accurate. The route showed on Session analysis was not similar to what I had ran. After 5-10 minutes running, the GPS stopped. Now I could not get any GPS signal.

Should I update the firmware for my V800, or should I return for a guarantee?

Thanks

Linh

If you look on page 13 of this thread, some more people have had gps problems this weekend.

I don't have any gps problems anymore, it started working properly again about 24 hrs ago for me.

Mine started on Friday, and have continued today (Sunday) as well. Even on a track workout it keeps dropping the GPS signal. This is getting discouraging and frustrating. What did they do?!

Had similar issues. Restarting the watch (press and hold the four corner buttons) seems to have solved it for me.

This seems to have worked for me also. Had to stop about 500m into my run, did a 4 button reset and the GPS came back (after quite a long lock-on period). The gps trace of the subsequent run looks fine.
Since this happened to so many people at once (and not via a firmware change), I can't think of so many reasons why - but perhaps:

* An external event that triggered a process the v800 couldn't handle (i.e. a temporary glitch in the GPS and/or Glonass system).
* A time-related event - perhaps the first batch of preloaded gps position data on the v800 expired (and they were all loaded in the factory within the same few days)?
* Another time-related event similar to the "millenium bug" where a certain date combination borked something
* A memory related event - e.g. something has been stacking up (some kind of cache) since the device left the factory and it maxed out - 4 button reset clears it?

As a developer I'm very curious :o)

Chris, can we please get any feedback on this issue. I was just about to order the watch and now I'm not sure any more.

Chris,

I've had issues with my V800 having intermittent GPS the last two nights. Not noticed this before, but the GPS status icon didn't even show up when I started my run on the 26th. It eventually found it, but dropped and refound multiple times during the run. It happened again last night, although this time it showed OK at the start, but then lost and reconnected a couple times - as well as had some really funky squigglies on my session map.

Blue line was my actual path.

Laundry list of things if you could give any update.....

Watch:

Daily Activity - Stats that can been seen on the FlowAPP (steps, inactivity alerts, other things I don't know about since Android is not supported) but not on watch

Week Summaries - Total Cals, etc. (I had an RS300X and am use to that summary)

Run Cadence - Current option is footpod, which would override the GPS tracking of the watch and not be accurate. This has been mentioned before asking
if there could be an option to select the distance source used (Pod/GPS). I've not seen a specific response to that question as far as it's being pursued
or if it is not going to be considered. The other option with the available hardware is to have the cadence picked up from the watch accelerometers. Are there any
plans to institute that if the assumption that present hardware should be able to do that. (Which from what I've read about the coming swim fucntions it should be)
[Latest update I've seen - you've gotten a lot of feedback on this and are looking into it]

Indoor Swim Metrics - Coming in October?

Flow:

Favorite Route - Create in Flow or import from somewhere else?

Manual Diary Entries - I swim without the HRM due to the chest strap issues mentioned in the post. (It just won't stay in place leaving the wall from a turn.
The tri jersey did help, but it still pulled away and lost signal on occasion.) Any timeline on when Flow will have similar capabilities that the personaltrainer has?
[Latest update I've seen - It's on the "Must Have" list, but no ETA]

Free Multisport - When it comes to bricks, I was expecting to be able set up a Sport Mode for these pairing different sports. Looking at the manual it says to select
Free Multisport in Polar Flow, but I can only see that on the watch. Will there be an option to set up a planned training session in Flow that would function as the Triathlon mode does?

Progress tab info is still a day off.

Progress Year view is a month off - Everything shows as being done the prior month. (Aug shows as July, July as June, etc.)

General:

Webinar / Comments from the slowtwitch "Ask Me Anything" posts - I never heard about a webinar. I would think that customers that registered their V800 or that entered their email for updates on the release before it was available would be notified about opportunities like that. You mentioned you might do another one, how would a person get signed up? You also mention compiling the questions from the slowtwitch forum to report back there with updates. Could you also add the requests and responses on the polar website with V800 FAQ/Requests/Release Notes as the safe source for the latest on updates or for people to find answers to their questions? Seems like quite a bit of redundancy on questions and people that aren't aware of solutions to their questions that have already been answered.

Strength Training guidance?

I've not seen a response on......
(Lot of stuff "flogazo" asked on Jul 3, 14 6:09 post)

(More on "flogazo" Jul 5, 14 13:33 post - run cadence)

Thank you!

Hi Chris - been using the v800 pretty much since launch in the UK and really like it. Looking forward to the swim upgrade later in the year. In the last couple of weeks I've started to have problems with GPS - taking a long time to find a signal and then not keeping it. For the first several weeks this was not a problem at all but has been in the last couple of weeks and as you can imagine is a real pain. Any suggestions? Thanks. Mark

Hi Mark,

Do a 4 button reset, Press all 4 corner buttons simultaneously, and keep them down until you see Polar logo displayed. If you're still experiencing the same thing let me know.

Did that - says connecting to device, then polar logo displayed then beeps and goes back to time display. Is that what should happen? Used to resets taking a bit longer. Will try GPS on ride back to station tonight. Thx. Mark

After the reset my GPS started working again, whoohoo!!

The Stride+ still won't pair, though, and it was working great before for many many miles on the treadmill.

Ideas?

Hi Chris,

Thank you so much for your response in this thread. As a new v800 user, this has proved incredibly valuable.

I tried adding the "incline" variable to my cycling view, but I only saw dashes during my ride today. GPS, altitude, and ascent/descent are working fine. Any ideas for how to get this to work?

Steve

I last uploaded on Sunday so I'm pretty sure I have the latest firmware. The Stride stopped pairing at the same time the GPS issues started and while the reset fixed the GPS issues, my Stride won't pair any longer. Before those issues started it was working great.

Hi, incline is calculated out of altitude change per time and distance change per time (i.e. speed).
For the later to be accurate enough to give you usable incline data, Polar apparently requires the distance data to come from the speed sensor instead of just GPS.
Hence: No Speed Sensor -> No incline.

If you ask me, they should just provide "GPS-incline" with a longer sampling period. This would avoid "jumpiness" due to GPS inaccuracies, thereby make it less reactive, but still usable on sustained climbs....

If GPS is good enough for running pace it's good enough for incline.
I'm wondering why additional sensor is required for incline and also why additional sensor is required for running cadence if the watch can already count steps.

You're asking the right question! As I've stated here (and on the polar forum) before: We don't like being indirectly forced to buy the sensors for stuff that the watch could do on its own....

Hi Chris and everyone.

I'm in my 10'th week as a V800 owner, and even though there are some important features missing, my general thought is; I love it!
I too, like most Tri-athletes miss features such as power readings, swim metrics and so on.

What I don't get is why people start bitching about a product, which already before in sale had a timeline regarding upcoming features.
I would love for Polar to meet those timelines, but I also know that deadlines get pushed due to unforeseen issues etc.
It the missing features was that big of a problem, then those buyers should have waited. I personally would much rather have the watch now, than having to wait another 6 months.

I do more than "just" swim, cycle and run. I also play squash on a high lvl.
I love that Polar made a real multisport watch, not one where multi gives you the options of swim, bike and run.

What I do feel is that the watch could offer more data to those unorthodox sports.
Lets take squash(tennis or any other racket sports); It would be awesome it the watch or(preferably) the footpod would give me the total amount of steps during a training session or match.
I dont care for distance, but the steps could be used to analyze my movement and by plotting those steps into a graph, I would be able to see how heavily I've been moving around the court. This same feature would be of value to all racket sports + bandy, soccer etc.

Another nice feature to have when doing indoors sports is the option to momentarily activate GPS so your workout location can be logged.

Im really looking forward to the "power readings" update!
Keep up the good work :)

I have been using the V800 for about 6 weeks now and the one thing I noticed when cycling is that that my heart rate is not always being record. I have change the batteries twice and have paired it on numerous times, but I still get a lot of drops! I wear the watch on my left wrist. I have updated the firmware on the watch always. Does anyone else have this problem and if should have they resolved it?

Make sure your HR strap is paired to the V800 via bluetooth, and not using the analog 5kHz signal. You will get drop-outs if using the latter.

AFTER pairing with your V800, try pairing to an app on a smartphone.

If you can pair with your phone after pairing with the V800, the V800 is NOT using the bluetooth connection.
