Torhans frame bottle?
I just bought a felt that has the torhans frame bottle on it. My question is this, what and how are people using this thing? Thinking about making it a flat kit, but curious as to how others use theirs. thanks, and sorry if i'm covering old ground here.

+2 on the flat kit.

Currently, I only use it to fill in the void...i.e. faster bike w/ it in place. I've used it as a water source, but the stinkin' rubber cap and dispensing method is pretty restricted. Does not work at all to douse yourself and you struggle to get any water in your mouth.

Yep, by no means is our bottle a "dousing bottle." It is a bite valve, not a standard cap/spouts. Bite, squeeze and it will deliver a high flow volume to you. We find that most of our athletes use the bottle for their on course nutrition. 10-12 oz of energy gel then fill the rest with water. Not only does the bottle shave a 1 watt off but also will then keep you from having to stick gels on your top tube or bento box.

New semi clear Vr bottles have 'cut' lines on them to convert to a storage unit.

Hope this helps.

Do you know whether the 'universal' VR bottle will work on a Kestrel 4000? Curved seat tube, and down tube only bosses. Thanks.

Yeah, should be know problem. Both the Felt DA and Universal VR holder have long (2cm/4cm) mounting slots. Depending on frame geometry, and boss mounts I don't see an issue with any bikes. Some bikes will be a tighter fit than others of course. On a Shiv for instance there will be some 'daylight' at the bb area.

This bottle can mount on either the down tube or seat tube.

I've done the gels in the VR bottle for a few races this season and it works perfectly. Plopped 16 gels and some water in there and my top tube could never be happier. Although I think you need to come up with some sort of funnel to go with it.

And the Felt bottle fits pretty darn well on my BMC TM01 too btw. If only the bottle came in black...

Flat kit (which isnt pictured) goes on the seat. Well a small multi-tool, crack pipe, and nano-inflator all get shoved up under the saddle. The CO2, Tube, and levers gets strapped to the top/sides of rear bottle cage. Worked well enough in St. George through the winds. Never lost anything or launched the bottle. It does make it a bit harder to get the bottle in and out of the back, but I only had to do that twice during the race, so not a huge deal to me.

Hi Jbro,

No, the Vr bottle does not have a quick fill valve. Bottle is is best used for nutrition (10 gels, rest with water/etc) tool kit, or hydration for short course.

I just got my limited black version for my Blue Triad. Where is the best placing of it? Eyeball aero says mounted to the seat tube as there is a inch gap between seat tube and bottle if mounted on bottom tube. But..... There is also a small gap where tubes meet Bottom bracket. Eletrical tape will look to ghetto there. Can it be heated with a heat gun to form fit? The bottle and the bottle cage. Itook it out today and must say it is well designed, goes in and out easily at 20-22 mph and easy to drink from when bitten down on. :0)

Hey Bmanners,

Hmmm. I have my Vr mounted on the down tube on my S5, and there is a one inch gap to the seat tube. Obviously frame and size dependent on how 'blended' the bottle will work.

And yes, the spout is in fact a bite valve. Bite and squeeze and will deliver a good volume of flow.

Cheers!

Can you buy the Felt mount? Apparently the standard mount does not really work on a Giant Trinity Composite frame with the curved seat tube. But it looks like the Felt version with the "wings" on the mount section might work. I also think the bottom portion would fit the profile of the Giant Trinity Composite because it has a flat edge rather than the pointed bottom edge of the standard mount. Or am I just seeing things?

Edit: I just found it on Felt's website. Can you only buy the Felt mount and not the bottle? I don't like the gray bottle.

I found it to be cumbersome as a watter bottle, instead I Dremeled the back open and it fits 2- tubes, 2- Co2's, fill valve, allen wrench, and tire spoons in it great. I like that stuff there rather than tied all around my rear bottle cages.

No biggie though, I have plenty of places to put water with my dual rear cages, and Torhans Aero 30.

After some customization, I got one of these on my Shiv TT. I had to purchase the Felt version of the mount and the stealth bottle. I anchored it to the seat tube by protecting the frame, then using the velcro strip which came with the mount to secure it. It's also secured on the bottom tube by a screw drilled through the side. I may have to reinforce it with a washer, but it's tight and the plastic is as thick as the mounting area.

The one downside is that you cannot use this setup for liquids. I'm using it for a flat kit. The cut out is over the mounting screw so that it fits snug. I also used double sided tape, strong stuff, to secure the flat kit to the mount so that there's no wobbling on roads or in wind.

As you can see, I had to cut out a wedge. You then stuff you spare tubes, tire levers, and whatever else inside. You can also see where I drilled the hole. The tape is the two sided which I mentioned and keeps the water cage from rattling.

I have a Cervelo P5 SIX. Any pictures of this bottle on a P5? Since there are no bosses on the seattube and the P5 does not have a "V" angle between the downtube and the seattube. Thus, how do you install? There are two bosses on the downtube, but if you install the bottle in that possition there is large gap between the bottle and the seattube. It looks odd. Any help would be great. Kye

Hi Hans,

Any chance you could provide weight of the complete system ("cage" and bottle ?) ?

Also do you have a rear or front view of the "cage/mount" without bottle to see where the holes are located ? In case we need to lower the bottle on seat tube is it possible to drill some new 5.5 / 6mm holes or the bolt are hidden in a specific way that makes it impossible to create different holes ?

Thanks for your help.

Youve got the right parts. What you do now is unbolt it, lower it down as far as it can go before the front tip hits the down tube, then drill a hole in the mount to hold a screw to screw it back in to the cage mount. I only ever used one screw. For a few dozen races now... never had any issues as long as its on there good and tight. That will let you get it down in to that gap by the bottom bracket. If you really want it to look slick, and since yours is black, you can close the remaining few mm gap with some electrical tape. Then it fits better than it does on a Felt.

Thanks a lot for the feedback. I did what you suggested (didn't have to drill) and got it as low as possible.
I think because I am riding a smaller frame it does not fit as well and still there is a little gap between the torhans and the frame's bottom bracket area.
Anyways - this is the bike a little closer to finalization - only race wheels are missing for final look (and i might get a different BTA too).

Thanks for the help - much appreciated.

It looks like the bottom is closer to the seattube than the top.
If so try to get plastic washers between the cage and frame down there to tilt the angle as much as you can. If it's just the picture and it's he same gap all the.......forget about it.

Nope. As of now it's probably not going to happen, at least a P5 Specific unit.

Hans

Have you gotten any feedback on whether or not the VR works in an Felt IA frame? I've ordered one but I am not sure if it will fit the geometry.

Thanks so much ... as long as there are no penalties to installing when it comes to aero advantage I'm willing to over look the fit. Any plans to redesign around IA Frameset? DA has now been all but phased out? Keeping it around for the large number of B and DA series bikes ... ???

Nothing I can report right now on the IA. I can say however that our new AeroZ BTA will have an accessory to allow the unit to connect to frames with internal hydration bladders, which is only the SHIV tri...for now.

We are taking over the after market sales of the Felt DA/B series specific Vr units. These should be on our website shortly and available to your local Felt dealer.

I had the same fit issue you are having with my VR bottle installed on seat tube on a different frame.
I don't understand how the "bottle cage" is designed at the top near the valve of the bottle, it is rounded the opposite way of the aero seat tube, for a good fit it would just take the bottle cage to have a "female aero shape" with the seat tube being the "male aero shape", of course not all frames have the same shape but with a slightly bigger radius on the aero cage compare to the average radius from most of the big manufacturers frames, the bottle cage would always fit very close to the seat tube.

Mine looked like yours, the upper part of the cage and bottle was pushed away from the seat tube because of the upper shape of the cage I don't get. A shame as I really wanted to go full Torhans on my bike with Aero30 in the front. Kept Aero30 but sold VR bottle and cage because of that fit issue.

Good question pyf

The original Vr was designed for the Felt DA, B series that had a curved seat tube. When we designed the universal Vr we wanted to make it...well....universal. Not seat tube specific. So yes we could've made the top concave, however making it convex would incur no aero penalty when now placed on the downtube. A concave holder could really dirty the air coming off of the airfoil downtube.

The Felt DA/B holder does indeed wrap around the seat tube. This is a good option for a lot of frames should you choose to place the Vr on the seat tube. Even if your seat tube is straight, not curved, it will work you just might need longer boss screws.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Hans,

So the FELT version has actually the same bottle with a better cage for seat tube installation ? If that's correct I wish I had known before ;-))) .
Let me know, then I'll contact you to get the "Felt" kit if you are now in charge of selling it. Thanks !

I am new here but regarding this topic i want to share my experience. I used the bottle in my cycle but after few days i don't think it will worth it for me. I remove the bottle from my cycle and create a customized gift by the cap of the bottle. Isn't it amazing idea to reuse of a bottle! My cousin bought a beautiful bottle cap gift from Inspire Bottle Caps online store and that inspires me to the proper use of bottle caps.

I do know either will work on it. We do now carry the Felt specific units. I don't believe they are on our website yet but I know we do have a limited number now. Or you can have your dealer contact us and we can get one out if you do want the Felt specific. Again, this is the unit for the DA. There is not as of yet an IA specific aero bottle/holder.

Does the VR actually help with aero properties of some frames, or is it just that it doesn't add as much drag as regular bottles? I'm debating mine, as I don't use often for fluids...but if it enhances aero on my Triad SL I could use it for spare? Otherwise my flat kit can be hidden elsewhere..Thanks for advice.

Oops. I hope I didn't just order the wrong product. I have a DA2. I just ordered your Aero30 with the bottle and tray. Re-reading your comments, it sounds like I should have ordered a specific "DA frame mount/bottle?"

Should I cancel my order or will the product fit on my DA2?

Thanks for your time.

Hey Lutzman,

Two different products. The Aero 30 will work great with your DA and even make it faster as it blends nicely into the headtube. If you want a frame bottle go with the Felt Vr on our website....and get even more faster.

Hey ggeiger,

To answer your question...some frames it is as much as a 20 gram/2 watt reduction over no bottles at all.. On the Blue Triad this is the case as I actually have that data. For some frames it may be negative to neutral. But it will ALWAYS perform better than a standard cylinder bottle. We have seen standard bottles on the seat tube on some slippery frames with as high as 140 gram/14 watt drag increases over no bottles at all. Keep round objects off your frame. If you need to carry a standard bottle, horizontally behind the seat is the way to go.

The only frame vr I could get over here in Germany was the da one, which works on my b10 but left kinda gap on the top. Anyhow.... Thinking bout your discount offer to get the aero 30 w/mount and the regular aero kit BUT would like to get that with the black bottle. Is there any option to choose? Didn't found any on your side.best wishes

Thanks so much Hans. So I should keep that there regardless it seems. I have snugged it as low on the seat tube as I can by redrilling the holes, and it seems to sit very close to both tubes. Because of the aerobar setup I have, I can't get the aero 30 real close to the headtube, so should probably go another direction (BTA) for fluids up front.

Thanks for all of the help, and I always appreciate opinions on my best setup. Old and looking for watts.....

Is it normal that the bottle is so unhandy? :D

You have to take of the cap to drink but when you're cycling you have to hold the cap, the bottle and the steer AND drive? Wtf, what's the practically of it? If the cap was attached to the bottle, hmm, okay, it would work but the chance of losing the cap is much bigger.

Stancke,

I'm sorry but I really don't understand what you are saying. The Vr unit has a bite valve spout. You do not have to remove it. Just bite and squeeze and you will get a high volume of fluid.

Hans is right with the bite valve but for me it was still not very handy, not enough water flow and a pain to clean through the small opening, which let me only water as an option there. Decided to take it as flat kit storage after some try though.
