I tend to have an egg sandwich most days. This comprises 2 slices of wholemeal bread and 2 or 3 eggs. I find this is a good combination for filling me up until lunch and also covering all the bases with regards to carbs/fats/protein.

On the internet, you can be anything you want. It is a pity so many people choose to be stupid.

I don't know if i'm a healthy eater, but i have:

1.5 cups of kashi go lean crunch
1 cup 1% milk
1 coffee w/sugar and milk
1 muscle milk RTD protein shake (20g)

on weekdays. Total is 620 calories for "1st thing" breakfast, but then i usually have more food just a few hours later.... total < 3kcal/day

Here are a few ideas:
- Hard boiled egg
- Greek / Icelandic Plain Yogurt with berries
- Turkey slices (not processed)
- Carrot dipped in peanut butter

If I am really hungry I have an omlet with turkey and lots of vegetables (broccoli, spinach, onions, mushrooms, etc..)

i'll drink one or two (depending on the workout) Ensure Muscle Health shakes.
that's healthy, right?

after the workout, it's steel cut oats with honey and almond milk.

One of the following:

Smoothie made of frozen organic berries, 1/2 banana, hemp protein, and freeze dried greens (Green Vibrance)

Or

Greek yogurt, berries or banana, walnuts.

Or

Veggie omelet (whole organic eggs, not just whites)

7:00 - 6 oz vanilla greek yogurt
8:30 - 1/2 cup Steel rolled oats with 1 tbsp brown sugar and a some cinnamon

This seems to fuel me just enough for a workout around 10:30 without feeling too full.

As mentioned before already... not really sure if i am a healthy eater

but what works for me is cuban coffee i make at home with some skim milk and a pop-tart. I have an extremely sensitive stomach and if i eat any eggs in the morning usually i have upset stomach through lunch. And the pop-tart works great with morning workouts for simple sugars

Slow cooked steel cut oats, walnuts, blueberrys, whey protein and skim milk. Nice low glycemic load and the walnuts have more omega 3 and less in pufas than almonds.

Quaker instant oatmeal, a banana, V8 fusion, 1 scoop of Hammer whey protein with 8 ounces of skim milk. It ends up with a 3:1 carb-to-protein ratio, making it a nice recovery meal after an early workout.

a new fav of mine is 3 tbs Chia seeds soaked in water for 10 min a splash of maple syrup, hemp seeds, almonds and blueberries. Great long lasting energy. I also like to have steel cut oats with blueberries and almonds, or a rice cake with natural peanut butter and chia or hemp seeds.

I usually don't eat anything pre-workout, this might come from swimming in college, where I would sleep till the last moment before I had to get in the water. Seems to work for me.

After morning workout: Some type of protien bar (Clif, Promax), or protien shake (EAS, MuscleMilk, etc)

Breakfast (1-2 hours after workout): Oatmeal, banana, maybe an extra small protien bar.

Not sure what you are looking for exactly. . weight loss or just healthy foods. But I think most on the above posts seem like good suggestions.

I'm just trying to get an idea what people who eat healthy do for breakfast. I tend to be one of those sleep to the last minute people, which means I don't allow myself a lot of time in the mornings to prepare anything for breakfast. One of the biggest things I've got to do is clean up my diet. It's just horrible these days, and I think a healthier breakfast is a big step in the right direction. Thing is, most of the menu items listed here in this thread are things I've never heard of before! Eggs, protein bars, protein shakes and oatmeal — familiar with those. Some of the other things, though, are completely foreign to me. And there are some unusual food combinations here as well . . .

Well, just focus on the foods that you do know what they are at first and go from there. You can always google the things you don't. One thing is where you will be eating your breakfast, seems like a lot of these people eat at home which is great if you have the schedule to accomodate. I usually have to eat in the car or at the office due to the nature of commuting to work and getting workouts in before work. Lots of good suggestions on here to get you started though.

technically Jason, it's 3000 kcal.... or Calories (capital "C"), a calorie (small "c") is the amount it takes to heat 1g water 1 degree celsius.

I've adopted a vegetarian diet (due to health benefits, not ethical reasons) as well as I have cut all gluten and milk products from my diet (and other allergens) in addition to refined/processed sugars and foods.

I have 2 scenarios:

Early (& lighter workout) = vega pre-workout energizer (1 scoop in water) and then eat a regular breakfast after

Standard Breakfasts (each is ~500 Calories)
A) Blueberry chia pudding
B) Oats + 2 tbsp shredded coconut, 1 tbsp cacao, 1 tbsp golden raisins, 1 tsp cinnamon
C) Shake (.5 cup of strawberries + .5 cup blueberries + .5 cup raspberries + 1 scoop Vega One)

Oh! We are supposed to eat healthy? Most mornings I do except when my 3 year old and I go out for donuts or when I make him waffles. Okay so some mornings I eat heatly like oatmeal w/greek yogurt and a glass of muscle milk light.
Today however I choked down:
1. 3 scrambled eggs
2. 2 pieces of turkey sausage (I know turkey...we ran out of the better tasting pork sausage)
3. One ginourmous hunk of homemade coffee cake w/cream cheese filling and raspberries that compliment the 2 sticks of butter in the batter. I was up at 5am Easter Sunday baking for my wife and I figured today was probably the last day the coffe cake would still be good so I went for it.

I did jump on the trainer at 5am this morning for the Sufferest Endless Sprial + Long Shot followed by a cool down 1 mile run on the treadmill so I don't feel guilty about consuming a days worth of fat in one great tasting breakfast.

Organic, slow cook oats with fruit and locally baked whole grain bread or whole grain bagel. We buy the oats in bulk (50 lb bags) then divide that into large plastic zip loc bags. Orange juice and coffee. If I need more fuel I may add a couple of eggs.

It is interesting that you ask this as I just finished an experiment. For the month of March I tried to spend under $100 on groceries.I ended up spending $106ish and I only went over $100 because I bought two 2lt bottle of orange juice which I wanted to used in another experiment that I'm doing...

Absolutely healthy! I don't see you offering any argument as to why it's not a healthy choice, but I'll provide you with the arguments I put forward when talking with vegetarians.

Here are the arguments against a vegetarian diet:

NOT ENOUGH PROTEIN INTAKE:
When you heat up protein, you denature that protein. When you denature a protein it becomes less functional in your body - so you're body's unable to use all of the protein in meat sources. Plant-based protein (chickpeas, beans, spirulina, nuts, ....) are all great sources of protein. Generally, we require 1 - 1.5 g of protein per kg of body weight, so at 190lb, I require ~ 85 - 130g of protein per day.

B VITAMINS & IRON INTAKE:
If you pay attention to what you're putting in your body, this isn't an issue. The Vega One supplement also provides additional minerals and vitamins (including iron and B's) to top everything up. And it's completely plant based and has a high level of bio-availability (your body is able to absorb the nutrients), which is always an issue with supplements. Since I've been eating a vegetarian diet for the past 6 months, I've had my minerals and vitamins checked through blood tests and have still remained above the average levels.

JUST LIKE MEAT, PLANTS CONTAIN CONTAMINANTS
Eat organic & local.

- Any others?

Anyone who wants to make the argument, watch Food Matters.

Cervelo, my grocery bill is generally around 80 - 120 / week depending on what I need to top up in terms of spices, nuts, pasta, ...

I workout first thing, and usually have a serving or two of Ultragen right after. But an hour or so after that I have one of the following:

Egg/feta in whole wheat wrap w/ a banana and some strawberries
PB on whole wheat flatbread w/ a banana and some strawberries
Old fashioned oatmeal with flaxseed, skim milk, PB, cinnamon, (very little) honey, and a banana...strawberries on the side

Not sure if that's healthy or not....but it works for me.

I had a consultation with a dietician a few weeks ago and was told I should have:
1 serving carbs
1 serving protein
1 serving fruit

Sample breakfasts she gave me were oatmeal with fruit and nuts, toast with nut butter and fruit, or yogurt and granola with a piece of fruit.

This morning I had slow cooker oatmeal - awesome as I put it in the slow cooker the night before and get to wake up to a hot breakfast that's ready to eat as soon as I roll out of bed. Mix in some raisins (or apple or peach or ...), throw on some almonds or walnuts, pour a small glass of OJ and voila! a balanced breakfast that sits happily in my stomach through my masters swim.

I then have a post-swim snack/second breakfast that's the same carbs/protein/fruit ratio.

Two cups of coffee.

Three eggs (any style/ organic free range from my own chickens in the backyard)

2-3 sausages or bacon strips (nitrate free, pastured pork)

1 cup of a vegetable like spinach or a piece of fruit.

Pretty much eat the same thing every morning. I'm a creature of habit. Once and a while I will make a fried egg sandwich with gluten free bread if I need more carbs for a workout or a race.

And yes, I do consider this to be very healthy.

I dig the vegetarian foods (so this is not an attack on the diet), but I am interested in your comment on the denaturing of proteins.

It would seem to me that denaturing is a critical step in making amino acids available. I am pretty confident that the first thing that happens when proteins are immersed in stomach acid is the denaturing of the protein.

yeah, I would agree that the denaturing argument is a red herring.
At the worst it just means a steak has a few % less steak left after you cook it. big deal, eat a few % more steak.

people get led astray worrying about that stuff. like pasteurized milke, some of the nutrients are lost! oh no! everyone is fat anyway I think they can live with their milk having a bit less milk in it =)

For the most part I already had stuff like plastic wrap and toilet paper and all that stuff but I used the same sort of frugal eating that I have adopted on all my bike tours.

For example I can buy a 1kg bag of rolled oats for,1kg bag of quick oats,a box of generic weetbix(32 biscuits),two bags of mixed dried friut and nuts and a 750gm tin of choc power and 3lts of milk all for under $15....That is enough to distribute into about 16-18 ziplock bags which takes care of two weeks of morning meals..

Roast or steamed vegetable every day, which are super cheap..

Rice dishes with tuna and beans and vegies..(4kg of rice =$4...tins of tuna=90c...tins of five bean mix=$1 etc.etc)

Cheap bulk eggs..

The only sauces I have are soy sauce and sweet chilli sauce, all other flavourings come from mixed herbs..

Fruits on special...

Cheap coffee(that was hard)

Cheese and various meats were bought only if they were on special..

It was a very spartan month but I continued to train and work and one thing I noticed is that by the end of the experiment I required much smaller portions..

No booze,no treats,no nights out.....

You just argued how a Vegetarian diet could be as healthy as an omnivorous diet. Yes, if you are super careful about it a Vegetarian diet won't screw you up. How is it an improvement over the identical diet including lean and/or grass fed/ wild caught, local (blah, blah, blah) meat/ fish sources? It isn't. The China Study is bunk and for every documentary promoting vegetarianism there are 10 convincing books written about diets based in evolutionary biology (ie chomping on Buffalo meat).

If the bonds between the amino acid are broken, then it would be extremely effective in digestion (this generally occurs by hydrochloric acid in the stomach). However my understanding is that the heat process (and extreme heat in certain cases) actually denatures the amino acids and damages their structure (and as a result function), but I'm not a biochem expert, so I cant go into more depth. Another case against lots of cooked food is that your body initiates an immune response when cooked food enters your body (watch Food Matters for an explanation of this).

jackmott, I'm in total agreement with you. Cooking, denatures proteins, which I believe is helpful. The Maillard reaction is the culprit for loss of protein content during cooking. Cross-linking of molecules almost always equates to higher stability (greater resistant to hydrolysis or other degradation reactions).

First thing in the morning before an early workout is toast or rice cakes with jam and maybe some a smear of almond butter. Depends on length of the workout.

Post workout is either sprouted whole grain toast or oatmeal. Both w/ almond butter, honey, cinnamon, sprinkle of hemp seeds and banana

I'm not trying to say that a vegetarian diet is healthier than a traditional diet, I was simply defending the fact that it wasn't unhealthy. There are definitely some convincing arguments in favour of it when it comes to reduction of nutritional stress, improved digestive efficiency/bio-availability, and reduction of acidity/increased alkalinity of the diet. As well as generally being a less expensive option.

Usually some combination of oatmeal with peanut butter and any of the following: Applesauce, Cinnamon, almost any type of fresh or dried fruit or nuts, yogurt, wheat grass, protein powder, skim milk

Half a banana w/peanut butter as a pre-workout snack

or if hungrier

3 eggs (1 whole + 2 egg whites) w/vegetables on corn tortillas with cheese and salsa

Leftovers from whatever "healthy" dinner I had the night before

same thing every morning before work: a large (~300g) sweet potato, microwaved, chopped into chunks and drizzled with ~1.5tbsp almond butter with ground cinnamon sprinkled on top.

weekend brunches can be anything: frittata, pancakes, omelettes, french toast, scrambles, hash browns, latkes, whatever i feel like making. usually have at least 2 servings of fruit and/or vegetables, though.

cheers!

Tortilla with eggs/grilled chicken/Cholula/maybe cheese
Coffee
Water

probably not the tortilla, unless its made of corn. flour tortillas used transfat based oils.

As for vegetarianism being more healthy..lol. Would a diet of french fries and other fried food be healthy? No. Your body makes cholesterol from fats,so while your total maybe low on a plant diet, if its fried food you still can have bad ratios that promote heart disease.

My pre-breakfast is usually dark chocolate and coffee ; after workout a cin/raisin bagel with chocolate pea protein ; or smoked salmon and some sweet bread with nuts.

I like to have a bowl of steel cut oats with banana, cinnamon, raisins, almond butter and coconut milk on most mornings. On a day with longer workouts i'll use quinoa with free range organic eggs scrambled in with 2 tablespoons coconut oil and maybe a piece of fruit. My advice is find a few breakfast meals you like and rotate them in and out. That's how you stay consistent.

For a very long time, pop tarts - strawberry frosted, with a greek yogurt (chobani or oikos) and banana

Now, 1 - 1.5 cups greek yogurt, 1/4 - 1/2 cup granola, 1-2 tbsp honey and a banana.
With coffee, black of course.

You've gotten tons of great examples already but in glancing through I didn't see this mentioned:

oatmeal with berries
banana with Nutella

It's kinda the best breakfast ever, it tastes like dessert and is a fantastic start to the day, with a good, healthy protein/carb/fat mix, and about 500 calories give or take.

Homemade muesli blended to my particular tastes and nutritional needs that morning. I basically just keep a bunch of bulk food in jars and throw in a handful of this and that. The raw large flake oats are perhaps an acquired taste.

-grains: large flake oats (raw), bran flakes, sometimes puffed quinoa and other exotic grains
-nuts and seeds: almonds, pumpkin, sunflower, walnuts (last two are great because they're relatively cheap)
-dried fruit: raisins, cranberries, dates, apricots
-occasional ingredients: shredded coconut, cocoa powder (unsweetened), pumpkin pure (surprisingly good)
-1%milk
-banana

Also a bowl of 1% or 2% plain yogurt and/or cottage cheese with berries (seasonal) on top and a dollop of PB or AlmondB. And if I'm extra hungry, a homemade muffin (carrot date, zucchini coccoa, banana choc. chip etc.). I wouldn't be surprised if breakfast was pushing 800Cal some mornings.

Probably not, but it's got to be a hell of a lot better for me than the steak and cheese quesadilla I just had for lunch. Oh, and the glorious basket of chips with red and green salsas.

I have been making up a huge batch of quinoa at the beginning of the week and then loading it up daily with chia seeds, plain greek yogurt, berries, maybe some dried fruit, banana a little bit of maple syrup or honey. This keeps me pretty full till lunch. Quick and easy.

At least 2 breakfasts, at 5am and 9am:

Sprouted wheat bagel (toasted) with almond butter
Organic Granola with unsweetened almond milk and blueberries and banana
Walnuts, raw almonds
Coffee
1 scoop muscle milk with slkimmed milk
Fish oil, iron, magnesium, calcium, d3

On a business day I consume 75% of my calories in the morning.

I work out at 6 and don't eat anything before (rarely have something during). Then, around 9:

1 whole egg, 3 egg whites, scrambled together, with hot sauce and ketchup (heavy sweater, so i don't care about sodium)
2 pieces whole wheat toast
1 cup special k red berries cereal w/ 1 cup skim milk, w/ 1 banana sliced up and mixed in.

That's about 600 calories. If I've done a particularly hard workout, then I'll also have:

~4oz plain Greek yogurt
1 cup frozen berries
1 tbsp jam
1/4 cup of granola.

That's about another 300 calories.

It's a bunch of sugar, but I'm usually pretty glycogen depleted, and within ~45 minutes of working out when I eat it, so I don't worry about that at all.

Be careful on the eggs, I used to live on them but I've had to give them up. My Doctor believes that all the endurance athletes he has eat way too many eggs, probably because it's light protein that is quick and easy to digest. I'm now allowed one every two weeks.

I had some blood work done and it showed high bad cholesterol, never had a history of this and I consider my diet good. I eat a lot of eggs, the doctor says it's down to eggs and he has a few patients the same way i.e. very active, healthy diets but high cholesterol but no history of it. I've quit eggs for 3 months and will get tested again this week. I've not done much research on this, happy for you to shoot this down if you think he's wrong.

3 toasted whole-grain bagels with honey, two bananas, fat free milk and black coffee is pretty standard. Is that even healthy? I'm 6'4" 183 (ding) with 5-7% bf.

I'm not always a healthy eater, but when I am I usually rotate the following breakfasts:

fruit & veggie smoothie (5-6 servings of fruit/veggies and 1-2 cups skim milk) usually takes me most of the morning to finish it

granola (homemade so there's no extra sugar/fat other than what I know is in there), fat free plain yogurt (usually greek) and fresh berries

1-2 times a week I have a breakfast of 3-4 scrambled eggs & a couple pieces of fruit w/ some OJ & carrot juice. I don't drink OJ a lot because it's just too sweet for me (and the mass produced not from concentrate stuff is so over processed etc...)

It's usually my second largest meal of the day. I tend to eat a larger lunch so I feel full longer in the afternoon for workouts etc. But I try to get at least 500 calories for breakfast which sometimes makes me feel like I'm eating a lot of food because most of what I eat is pretty low calories

Protein powder, since it's the quickest way for my body to get protein. I add a few hard boiled eggs and cereal with 1% if I have time. If not, I add malto to the protein or just some chocolate candy for the carbs.

Oh for those who take coffee as part of the first thing in the morning, it's very bad for you for many reasons such as decreased testosterone (google cortisol and coffee).

weekdays: 1-2C of diced veggies - some mix of tomatoes, bell peppers, brussels sprouts, asparagus, onion, garlic, kale, spinach, broccoli, etc sauteed in olive or coconut oil, then mix in 2-3 eggs (local), sauteed then broiled (frittata)

weekends for longer morning workouts - smoothie with 1C coconut milk, 1-1.5C mixed berries/cherries (fresh or frozen), walnuts or almonds, vanilla, greek yogurt yogurt or protein powder

espresso with cream or cappuccino unsweetened

This is just a general reply to the thread, but yours in particular struck me. I am amazed at how much time some people appear to have to cook breakfast in the morning. Do you guys work from home, or just get up insanely early? There are lots of delicious suggestions in here, though.

I do get up early, between 5 and 5:30 to walk my dog. Always been a morning person. I chose to live less than 10K from where I work so my commute is <20 minutes most days. I also have several ways of cutting down on prep time:

-do all my veggie chopping on the weekends, then store in tupperware so it's just a handful of this and a handful of that
-make a double batch of fritatta so I only have to do it every other day
-make the fritatta during/after dinner cooking so it's just a minute in the microwave away from being ready

I typically eat the same thing every day, but lately I've been running low on my energy so I added a second breakfast.

Breakfast #1 (at 7:00-7:30 after first workout of the day):
Bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats
1 cup Light Soy Milk

Breakfast sandwich consisting of:
2 slices of whole wheat bread
2 eggs
2 slices of turkey bacon
sliced tomato, onion, avocado
hot sauce

Breakfast #2 (at 9:30 at work):
Breakfast burrito consisting of:
Rice and beans
2 eggs

1 banana

That usually gets me to lunch around 12:30 or so.
