is there a way to roughly estimate watts? i checked out a couple calculators online one said 200 one said 240 for my last race. either way heres some details

19.5 mile ride
averaged 22.9 mph
height 6'3
weight 185
riding a trek speed concept 7.0 with bontrager race x lites (2009 model) roughly 20 lbs of gear...
stayed aero the entire time. (dont know if that matters at all)

anyway, any input would be very helpful.

would a power meter be a good investment for training/racing?

thanks for any help

4) Rider weight - 173 lbs
5) Describe bike and wheels - P3 with rear covered, standard wheel up front (I know, I know....), Vittoria EVO with latex tubes
6) Misc notes, to whine and make excuses for your lack of power and/or lack of aero - dead flat course with a bit of a head wind out and tail back. I have no excuses, just need more work!

Is there a way to include w/kg and distance to get a better understanding of efficiency?

I'll Play:

214 NP
23.5 mph
17.5 miles with about 300 feet elevation, at about 5300 feet
179 Lbs rider weight
P3C, with 808 tubular front ( a Vitoria EVO Piste tire), old Zipp flat disc with Contentinal Compeition on disc.

Happy with the speed, not so happy with low power.

1. AVGP= 194 NP=201
2. 21.8
3.42miles (weird distance)
4. 148lbs
5. Cervelo p1, ZIPP 900 clincher with butyl tubes+ vittoria evo cx clincher 23mm, flashpoint 60 up front with same tire setup. Lower psi as it was a fairly bumpy road, giro aero helmet, moderately low position, one bottle on seat tube and PD Aero Bottle up front.
6. 15mph cross winds/swirling, rolling with 6 significant climbs, chip seal asphalt that was somewhat rough -- so overall a slow course.

Sprint

1. avgp=238 np=246
2. 19.9mph
3. 12.9miles
4.152lbs
5. same except no water bottles, and a wheelbuilder cover on a pt clincher training wheel.
6. 25-30mph wind, very hilly, and rough roads. This is what wind and lots of elevation can do to you. Won this race though, amazingly my split was the fastest at 19.9mph

Well I guess somebody has to set the bar for "worst performance/efficiency" so here are my numbers from the Belwood Sprint Tri back in mid-July. This should help everyone feel better about their own power numbers:

1) 206w avg/218w np
2) 36.3 kph
3) 30 kms
4) 82 kgs (I'm fat. But as of today, I'm down to 78 kgs)
5) Cervelo P3 (aluminum), Zipp 404 clinchers, LG Rocket aero helmet.
6) Rolling course (but no real significant climbs)

Hoping to post improved numbers at an upcoming sprint tri (Guelph Lake II) a week from tomorrow.

I always feel slow here.

1) 262 W
2) 23.8 mph
3) 17 mi
4) 200 lbs
5) Trek SC, wheel cover rear, S80 front
5) Flat course. Two 90 degree turns, Three 180 degree turns. Slightly windy. LBS had recently added spacers to my setup when I mentioned that I didn't breathe as easily as road position. I've since remove the spacers.

Very happy with my bike fit and I run the Shiv with no spacers up front. Fast out and back course.

You're going almost 29 mph on 252 watts? Can you post a pic of your position?

What exactly do you think your analysis is showing?

I just think it's fun to look at the overall trend, see where you fall within it, and remind yourself of what is possible.

I'm pretty shocked at the number of points that are > 23mph with less than 250 watts. I didn't realize that was doable. It makes me want to work on my aerodynamics more.

And of course there are so many variables that it would be a mistake to assume every race can be near or below the line. If the course is hilly, has a lot of sharp turns, or has difficult sections to get in and out of transition, everyone's time will be slower. But overall it's still cool to look at!

Well, I guess if you want another data point from my 250 watts/20.0 mph in my previous post, the ride from the finish line back to my car was 180 watts/25 mph for 15 miles.

If this thread shows anything, it shows that the variation of watts needed to achieve a given speed is huge. You could look for your speed in the chart and assume your watts is somewhere in that range.

Doh, I didn't notice your elevation change. I'm thinking this thread should be limited to TT's where the finish elevation is the same, or similar to the start.
