Leadman 125 - 4/13/14 - 4th fastest bike split overall

1) 265 watts
2) 23.77 mph
3) 69.2 miles
4) 149 lbs - total weight 177 lbs
5) SHIV, Flo 60/Disc, GP4000s, LG Vortice helmet, Pearl Izumi Octane tri suit
6) implied CDA - .278
7) winds avg. 5 to 10 mph
8) a flat course with only 1300 ft. gain overall, but with a massive amount of stop and start turns and 90 degree turns that slow down speed a lot.

4/23/2014 PCSD Eddy Merckx style

1) Average watts 379W
2) Average speed 42.6kph / 26.4 mph. Time 22:43
3) Distance 10 miles (PCSD)
4) Rider weight 164 LB
5) BMC Road Machine, stock Ksyrium wheels, butyl tubes,
Normal Giro road helmet.
6) Decided that I wanted to try and get an idea of what kind of power I used to put out "back in the day". I can look up some old times on this course from the '80s when I was young and will try and compare this ride with those, do some hand waving and "guestimate" my power during my peak years.

Also note that for a better comparison I did NOT do the "fake aerobar" thing where you rest your forearms on the tops of your bars. Back in the mid '80s we hadn't figured out yet. About 95% of the time in the drops with a bit of time tucked in on the hoods or tops.

Based one two weeks ago I am about 1:43 slower Merckx than the TT bike. 10 seconds a mile!

Picture from last night's ride.

St. Anthony's Triathlon

1) 215 Watts (223 NP; .85 IF)
2) 22.5 MPH
3) 40km
4) 189 lbs
5) Shiv with Flo 60/90, Bell Javelin
6) 89% Humidity, light winds

First race with power. Goal was 225 NP. Blew up midway through the run... many factors led to that demise. I believe the bike was a small part of it. Nutrition and conditions were the two major factors. Lesson learned... hopefully. My bike split was 6 minutes faster than last years!! Thank you Trainerroad.

Columbia, MO Trizou ("B" Race)

1) 267W (285NP; 0.92IF)
2) 23.6mph
3) 13.2mi
4) 165lbs
5) Trek SC 7.5, Zipp 404(nFC)/808FC, Giro AV2
6) 59F (according to my Garmin 500), 5-8mph, nearly perfect conditions. Helmet vents taped as it was projected to be 52F.

The 2 lap course had lots of turns, several requiring brakes including a downhill run into T2 with 900' of climbing (If IM distance it would have 7200' of climbing). My legs just weren't three. Goal was around 290W AP, 310NP. If I had managed that, I think I come into T2 in the lead or right behind the leader. He just had an extra 20-30 watts on me at every climb I think. I had a shot at winning the race.... or at least a showdown with a very fast runner. A little frustrating as I've ridden better power numbers on 60-80 minute Sufferfest videos. Specificity? Overreaching? Hard to say. I took 3 days easy and my bike TSB was +6 race morning. But I'm looking forward to a long taper after my last build week before my "A" Race for the first 1/2 of the season. Maybe the redline swim and long run in T1 (~300M run) hurt me more than I think.

I can't complain I guess, still the 3rd fastest bike split, I swam 13 seconds faster (400M) than last year and ran really, really well without even pushing hard. A 1 minute PR still and a 3 minute overall race PR. I think the winner set a new bike course record. Most important, no injuries, I ran easy enough that I can still put in some solid tempo and threshold interval runs this week and I know where I need to keep focusing (bike). I also had the fastest transitions on the day, so that's pretty cool.

FWIW, I went the same speed as you on 295 watts at 180lbs. Similar kit.

You might gain 1 sec/km with better tires, so that's 15sec of the 55 you need to level the bubbles vs. the Masters 40+ winner.

Still 2.5sec/km unaccounted for between your 330 watts and my 295 though.

Yeah, I'm getting the power so my aero must really suck. Just picked up a new seat and I need to get in with my fitter to see if we can do anything. Really, better tires? I thought the Contis were considered the best for clinchers, especially on these wheels. I'm also getting rid of that beast of a helmet.

I also paced the hill wrong and went a bit too hard on the 1st half of it when compared to the 2nd half. Oh well, TTs are my biggest weakness so I'm trying to work on them.

Which race were you doing?

Andy
