[reply]It hurts to see Dick Hoyt miss the cut-off. I wish he had made it. They are reporting he will miss the swim cut-off.[/reply]

They're also saying he's (been) considering switching to 70.3 racing.

Maybe we'll see them in Clearwater 07...

I know about the cut-off times, I'm just wondering what purpose the cut-off times have *at Kona*.

It's kind of like saying that the World Cup final or a Stanley Cup game could end in a tie.

I don't see the purpose. I also don't understand how Farrar gets a spot to the World Championships after not finishing a race in the alloted time, yet an emotional story like the Hoyts are going to be shelved in their last race.

There is no logic in such a deicison.

why have cut-offs in any race? i have absolutely no idea why you think that there should be cut-offs in non-kona races but no cut-offs in kona. that is illogical.

I always feel uncomfortable when I see Ricky during these races, kind of like looking at a car crash aftermath. Is that normal of is it lack of exposure to this kind of situation?

It's interesting to see so close up and in real time the different styles, cadences and equipment choices the top guys (and gals) have made. Looks like Al-Sultan's bars are tilted slightly down (as was noted by Paul and Bob) and he's pushing a much heavier gear than Normann is...

I too feel bad for the Hoyts. What a legacy they leave on the IM, though....

You have to qualify for Kona, any shmuck can sign-up for an IM. Cut-offs are understandable at a race because they serve a safety and administration purpose. But at Kona, where lottery picks make-up less than 5% of the field, cut-offs don't seem necessary...

ESPECIALLY when it involves a story like the Hoyts.

Too bad that Welchy couldn't keep quiet for a minute, it would have been nice to hear the interview between Dick Hoyt and Mike Reilly

When I see them it makes me feel kind of funny. It sort of frightens me. I think that if I were in Dick or Ricky's place that I could never, ever be as strong as them. That frightens me. It reminds me that my life and the things I love hang by a fragile thread- they are contingent on things going well.

I know I could never roll with the punches like Dick and Ricky Hoyt have. Same with Marc Herremans.

Whew...Texas squeezes out a win over Nebraska 22-20 with a field goal in the last minute.

Thought I'd throw a college football update in there for those missing the games for Kona - I'm watching both at once :-)

Norman's lead 5 minutes before the turn around!!!!!!!!! He might be able to walk the entire marathon.

Long, long, long way to go. Macca for example looks like he's riding fairly easily and on a day like today with the conditions being what they are, he could be capable of a very low 2:40 marathon....

.....but lots of ground to cover before then.

That's something I thought a lot about when a running buddy of mine had a motorcycle crash and lost his right footmid calf. Previously he was a 2:55 marathon guy despite being 6'3" and 200lbs. I hope that if I am ever tested to that level, I would have the strength of character to come back. But until one is tested...
