One of my neighbors has three chihuahuas. They always yap like crazy whenever something passes by. One night the three got out and came after my dog while I was walking her. They were biting her. I kicked one of the chihuahuas like a soccer ball. That was awesome, and it ended the attack.

I'm surprised that satan himself didn't come after you for harming one of his demons.

6AM on a Sunday morning a few summers ago. 1/2 mile from the house a very large mutt runs straight for me while I am running. It runs out of a yard with a very obese woman sitting on the front porch of the trailer. I assume it must be a stray roaming the neighborhood since she is making no effort to stop the dog. I took refuge behind a mailbox and light pole. Trying to keep from getting bitten. When I realized it was no use the dog was going to get me I got my dog mace out and started to shake it up before I sprayed the dog. Once this fat bitch saw me getting ready to mace the dog she starts hollering for the dog and does her best attempt at running down the driveway to get the dog. I was so pissed but also still scared of the dog so I didn't go off on the woman like I wanted.

I guess she was going to sit there and watch me get bitten by the dog? This stopped me from running in the area.

Since you already had the mace out, should have gone ahead and hit the owner with a spray or two.

I was walking my dogs once when a neighbor's Golden retriever came out and started picking a fight with one of my huskies. I yelled at it and it turned towards me, bared its teeth, and growled. Although it's been years since I did any martial arts, instinct took over, and I unleashed a hard low front kick that caught it right in the chest and took all the wind out of it. Game over - it hobbled away, wheezing oddly. I was pretty satisfied with the outcome, and my dogs looked at me with new-found respect. ;-)

This dog had always been a typical mild-mannered Golden and had never given me or my dogs any trouble, so the incident seemed way out of character. Then I found out a couple of weeks later that her owners were going through a particularly nasty period in their marriage, which ended shortly in divorce. Made me feel bad for the poor dog which must've been really stressed out.

I used to run early in the am when lots of people had their dogs off leash. They would look at me, look at their dog...do nothing. Once I took the pepper spray out, they would quickly leash the dog. I only once tried to spray a dog. A big German Shepard about 5 feet from me barking, growling, baring teeth. The owner was about 20 feet away telling me his dog wouldn't hurt a fly. Fortunately for the dog, the spray was frozen and he backed off without incident.

You guys are all far too nice.

With or without the owner;
The approaching dog (of any size or breed) gets one warning, then I let fly with the biggest rock, stick, foot, fist available. No questions. No debates.
Little yappers I can outrun/ride, but anything fast enough to "instinctually" explore, receives "The Education!"

If the dog has instincts that cause them to chase or protect, both dog and owner will understand the drive of self-preservation.

And?

I eat jacked crossfit guys for lunch lunch on a weekly basis. That’s not a brag. That’s just fact.

It’s a really good idea for you to not get into a physical confrontation.

I had to remove a guy from a job site Monday Tweaker was bothering people, me included. I asked him to leave and he started to verbally threaten me. I knew he had no training by the way he had his hands down.

I’m amazed that untrained people get into scraps. It’s not smart.

I am amazed that unarmed people get into scraps. The best BJJ won't defend against a firearm. Except in drills of course. Good luck with that.

1. I don’t get in scraps. I’m acutely aware of my limitations. They are exposed to me 3-5 days a week.

2. I never train hand to hand weapons defense (unless you count running).

3. Who says I’m unarmed?

Just curious, what type of work do you do and how do you spend your leisure time that you are frequently getting into physical confrontations, especially with crossfit guys?

I train jiu jitsu, Muay Thai, wrestling and kickboxing. There are many crossfit peeps who come and go.

Ripped CF guys come in (some thinking they’re going to do well on day one) and get wrecked.

Here in Philly you ride mtb in Wissahickon park at your own risk. I have 2 holes in my arm from a giant chocolate lab, been bit on the foot and nipped on my leg. Also have had numerous times I had to put my bike between me and an off leash angry dog. Two of the best were a crazy lady that walked two basically guard dog type Shepherds off leash. I had a giant rock in my hand and I was threatening to smash one in the face. The lady just kept saying ''come here'' in a soft cute voice and ignoring me.
Another time I learned what a Cane Corso was. Looked like a deer bounding through the woods at me. I let the owners have it after the showed up, and I was seriously the most scared ever in my life. If I was carrying that day I would have not hesitated to shoot it in the face.
Then there were these two arrogant women that walked a giant standard poodle off leash. That thing was super aggressive and when I confronted them on it one if them actually said ''he likes to chase bikers and knock them down''. That got heated and it was the only time in my life I called a woman the ''C'' word.
Now I carry mase and I won't hesitate to use it, on dog then the owner.

I love dogs. But I will not tolerate a dog that comes into my yard threatening me or my family. Spraying the dog wins that battle, but what happens when it is my wife, or kid, or neighbor's grandkid's? No, aggressive dogs that do that need to be removed from the neighborhood permanently.

You people are nuts. Dogs need to run and swim. Stop living in fear. I thought this was going to be a legit story of using violence in a dangerous situation.

The worst I have had to do "defending" myself against a dog is spray it with my water bottle on the bike...

Spoken like a guy who’s never had to break up a dog fight.

Keep your pet on a leash or keep it away from people and their pets.

Well, N=1 is good enough for me. No need to ever worry about dogs biting or attacking humans.

I have a giant male Great Pyrenees, he goes 120+ lbs of pure muscle. Invariably someone will have a little dog off leash on the trail and as he runs up say, 'don't worry, he doesn't bite' I always respond 'mine does'. He doesn't, but I like to see them scramble.

I've been tempted to use a variation of this when someone's off leash dog comes at me. When they say "Don't worry, he's friendly!" I want to reply "I'm not." Folks don't get that everyone else doesn't understand their dog's body language or temperament. If I think a dog is going to bite I'll act accordingly.

Happily the dog park by my house is used by responsible owners and I've run close to or through the off leash area many times without ever having any issues.

Have any of you been to South America? There are packs of unfed dogs all over the place. They are not on a leash yet people somehow coexist.

Whatever... This is typical US snowflake bullshit.

If this is a real danger, lets all post a picture of our dog scars. I'll start... See pic below.

That’s your argument? Packs of feral dogs in South America? Ok.

I haven’t been to South America, but I’ve been to Mexico. Lotta stray dogs there, too. Lot of them have three legs. Also a lot of cheap street tacos available.

What type of training would you recommend for someone who wants to be able to disable an opponent as quickly as possible should a situation escalate to a physical confrontation?

If your up against someone with no training it’s all about awareness and luck. Athleticism helps too.

If your up against someone with some training you really don’t have much of a chance.

Put it this way, the more I learn about fighting the less I want to actually get into one. People have asked me what my “go to” moves would be to end a fight quickly. My answer is “here, I’ll show you...”, then I turn around and run away.

I deal with guys that will tie me in knots without much effort and many of them don’t look tough at all.

I know how to fight but there are always people who are better at it.

Besides cardio so you can out run your opponent? Firearms training.

But for one on one “fights” with no weapons you’ll just have to get in the gym and wrestle, do jiu jitsu, judo, boxing, kickboxing (not that cardio kickboxing BS - sparring).

Any combat art where you regularly train against uncooperative opponents, where you are sparring live (not pre-choreographed movements).

There is no short cut.

Don’t fall for Krav Maga or Aikido.

Start training. Put in the time. It’s really fun.

And you’ll never want to get into a real fight again...

PM me your location and I might be able to recommend a place to start.
