Official Slowtwitch 16th Annual 100/100 Run Challenge (2022/23) Thread
Quote | Reply
On November 15th, the 2022/23 edition of the 100 runs in 100 days Challenge, commonly known as 100/100, commences. That's 8 days from today.

Thanks to Dev Paul for conceiving of and curating this Challenge over the years. We shall begin with our customary "Airing of the Grievances." Let us all get it out of our systems. Last year we've moved to Nov 15th and we're sticking with that (which will be the source of one grievance).

In this thread we'll explain the rules, answer questions, and then share successes and failures, and give each other encouragement, as the Challenge progresses.

This Challenge honors frequency. Not distance. Not speed. Not effort. It honors regularity. Routine. To prevail in this Challenge you don't see how much you can do; rather how little. Not how hard you can run, but how easy. You might think running that easy detrains you. Let's revisit this once you're a couple of months into it.

What Counts?

1. Any run that's at least 20 minutes long or at least 2 miles long. This is the big rule change this year.
2. The runs can be outdoors or on a treadmill.
3. Walking does not count, but an honest-effort walk-run does count.
4. Aquajogging and elliptical training do not count.
5. You can (and probably should) take days off.
6. You can do days with more than 1 run session; each sessions counts But no more than 3 sessions in 1 day count.
7. You get no credit for going longer than 20min; a 20min run is identical to a 60min run for this Challenge.
8. Extra effort gains you nothing.
9. You can go as slow as you want provided both feet leave the ground on every stride.
10. Runs must separated by at least 1 hour to count as multiple sessions.

Runs shorter than 20 minutes

11. Up to twice per week you can run a session that is shorter than 20min if on the very next day you run a session that makes up the difference, i.e., a 17min run doesn't count, but, if you run a 23min run the following day, then you've officially run 2 sessions. You'll need to jimmy the run-duration totals in your training log to get the credit (you're on your honor here).

Joining the Challenge; Entering Runs on the Slowtwitch Training Log

- Go to our Challenges page on the Slowtwitch Training Log. You can always navigate there via the blue navbar above (below the ad banner at the top), hover over "Training" (third heading from right) and click on Training Log.
- Sign up for a Training Log account if you don't already have one (your Reader Forum account is also your Training Log account, i.e., there's one unified login for both).
- Then look for 100/100 for 2022/23. It's hard to miss.
- Click "enroll".
- If you just go to the Challenges page, this is an easy place to go to in order to enroll. Just make sure you're signed in first.
- Now start entering your runs in the log. Make sure you only enter runs that combine as 20 minutes as one session.
- Please ensure that you log a distance along with the time. If you don't know the distance, please try to estimate.
- Your runs will automatically get entered into the Challenge results sheet.

- Here's what my Training Log page looks like, and you can see I'm enrolled in the 100/100. If that icon on your training log instance said ENROLL, then click it. If it says LEAVE, as mine does, then you're already successfully enrolled in the Challenge.

Strava Sync

- You'll see a button on our Training Log allowing you to sync with Strava (in fact, you can see it in the screenshot above). Click that button if you enter your results some other way, in another training log or program. The only requirement for this to work is that your other training log must also sync with Strava. Basically, if your session is on Strava, our log will find it, download it, and your sessions will automatically append to the Challenge. "EricTheBiking" (on the Forum) is our Training Logmeister. He'll answer questions you have about this on this thread.

Viewing Challenge Standings

- From the Challenges home page, click on the link to go to the 100/100 for 2022/23, you'll see where you and everyone stands.
- Click on any of the column headers, and it will sort the sheet based on that category (frequency, time, distance, aerobic points). Just, frequency is how we judge this.
- Please note that you must be logged in to actually enter your data. You can't enter data without logging into your account (seems obvious...).

Accumulated Wisdom: This is year-16 of this Challenge. Much has been learned, good and bad.

- This is an exercise in who can whisper the loudest.
- Don't try to bank run sessions early. Just trust the process. You'll probably be more successful "banking" runs, as in, performing double runs, later in the Challenge rather than earlier.
- Take days off when you need to. As your fitness increases, you may find later in the Challenge you can run doubles. Most who hit their 100/100 do take rest days.

Levels

While some might go for 100 runs, the reality is that unless you are already running 4-6 hours per week, this might be unrealistic. For most a realistic goal is to start at Bronze club pace (or less) and then see how things go.

Platinum Club = 100 runs in 100 days
Gold Club = 90 runs in 100 runs in days
Silver Club = 80 runs in 100 runs in days
Bronze = 70 runs in 100 runs in days

Please put any questions on this thread. Better to put them here than send PMs or emails.

Please post stories about your workouts, pictures from running days and chime in to motivate each other on this thread. Don't just log workouts and disappear. The community is what it's all about.

Zwift Running

You'll see me on Zwift Running for a lot of my sessions.

In order to discourage any sense of failure....we should rename the precious metals to members of the cucurbit family: Pumpkins, zucchini, patty-pans, watermelons, and cucumbers. People can then strive for their favorite squash, without any negative connotations.

That certainly plays into the early part of the Challenge with Thanksgiving & Xmas & all, but sometime around mid-January, that pumpkin stuff is gonna be kinda 'stale'

Maybe tasty baked goods? Cakes, pies, brownies, cookies, cream puffs, etc.?

Well I had grandiose plans for this season and managed to reinjure my back badly of all things fixing my Woodway treadmill.

I then went into maintenance mode for the run all year, just jogging to pool and back slowly or short 15-20 min transition runs.

Basically what I did ALL year was the new 100/100 minimums (or thereabouts)....I essentially had four "real runs" all year...half Ironman shuffles at Hawaii 70.3 Tremblant 70.3 Muskoka 70.3 and St. George Worlds' 70.3. My swim and bike were OK.

I shuffled thru St. George and I said, "that's it, I have to work rehab and take it under control" and just do jogging on days that I feel good and just focus on swim and XC ski through the winter.

Then the new 2 mile/20 min minimum comes up, and today was at the pool and went for a jog at 10kph on the treadmill after my swim for 15 min and thought

"this is exactly the type of jogging I need to do for rehab and get stronger....no chasing speed, no chasing hills, no chasing mileage"

OH WAIT THE NEW ST 100/100 IS almost no volume, no speed no hills....it is barely shuffling out 120 min a week of jogging 6x20 min (or 12x10 min). If I start with 4x20 min jogging that's plenty of lightweight stuff to build back my running by next spring:

There she stood in the doorway
.And I was thinking to myself
"This could be Heaven or this could be Hell"
Then she lit up a candle
And she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place (such a lovely place)

Having said that, I prefer if the 100/100 is 7x30 min per week. I don't need it watered down for me. Right now, my coach (me) says don't get sucked into doing too much and focus on going properly. if that is 3x20 min per week what my coach says, then that is what I better do. Once my coach says I can do 7x30 min of 5x40 min plus 1x80 min and 1x120 min, that's what I will do then. But now is not then even though I am walking into Hotel California, I can decide what amenities I am going to use for starters.

As I somehow manage to shuffle into a 70.3 Worlds Finland slot at Muskoka this past summer, my A goal would be to shuffle out a 1:45 at Finland worlds next summer versus the crap 2:05 I did in St. George. I am only 13 months away from doing a 1:49 last fall and my cardio is still doing OK (no heart attacks yet LOL). But for now, light jogging at St. George pace (6 min per km) is what i need in small doses at most.

Hey Dan,
Thanks for putting on the 100/100 again.

Just to avoid unnecessary confusion regarding the rules, there are still several references to 30-minute runs in your explanation of the rules: point 7 and the section heading “Runs shorter than 30 minutes.”

Since someone new to the challenge will almost certainly ask about this, it might be worth changing.
Cheers

I request that in order to keep it a "challenge" rather than "competition", there be no numerical leaderboard. All in gold level (completing at least 1 run per day average) be sorted randomly with no numerical placing, likewise for silver and bronze levels.

I'm signed up for my second Boston next year so I'll enter the challenge although I'll be on our 40th anniversary cruise next week. Never been on a cruise ship before but I know they have a running track. Question is will I feel like running :)

I do credit the 100/100 challenge for getting me to Boston. I pretty much run every day unless races (taper-recovery) get in the way.

The Challenge starts on 11/15; but doesn't mean you have to

I would say take the time off, fully enjoy your cruise, forget about missed days, don't go anywhere NEAR a running track or treadmill, and do some doubles in February or March if you feel the need to catch up

Adding this suggestion to the main thread:

------------------------

I THINK I have a good idea that follows below that will appeal to many and also pull in more participants. Four concurrent challenges with the 100/100 branding

  • 100/100 Ultra....minimum run that counts is 10km. This gets you to 1000 km by end of the period. Meant for the hard core, somewhat front of pack, can take days off, can double up
  • 100/100 Classic = rules as of 2021, at 100 runs you got to 3000 minutes
  • 100/100 66.6 = 20 min minimum run, 2000 minutes of running total
  • 100/100 50 = 15 min minimum run, 1500 minutes of running!

I think all parties get everything they want and maximize engagement with the community. It is easy for Eric to set these all up. We can all concurrently sign up for any of these under the 100/100 branding.

This falls into the category of what I tell my staff at work...stop whining, the past is the past, we have to service the future. So I am trying to apply that here and stop my whining and come with solutions that can move us to the future!!!

I'm interested to know how many people have at least a rough plan on what they want to achieve with this challenge. I'm here for a few reasons, but I always come to anything like this with some type of sub-goal: my plan is to start with 2 mi, 3 mi, 2 mi for the first week, and assuming that goes ok, increase than to 3 mi per day. Secondary goal would be adding a longer run once per week, after probably week 4. Doable? Absolutely, although maybe not for me and I have to see how it goes. My fitness sucks.

I'll be coming in with the baby beginnings of a Streak at 7 days; I'll keep that going as long as I can, then get back to a 5 runs / 7days routine which had always served me well

I'll be stretching my long runs out using "The Gary the Vale Ultramarathon Training Program" as best as I can

The Plan goes like this: Every week, you add ONE mile to your long run; ideally, by going 1/2 a mile further on an out-n-back route, so you can look 800yds down the road and say to yourself "Self. We're going down to there next week. Just a little further, that's not so bad, right?"

Now, be warned ... to my knowledge, no one has actually started at zero [or 1, as the case may be] and stuck with it for an ENTIRE year, culminating in a 52-mile run [people tend to do silly things like sign up for races along the way, messing up the progression]

I'll be doing a 20-miler - of my own creation - around Halloween-time next year, so I hope to be back in that sort of condition before Summer starts

Plan? We don't need no stinkin plan. Just run 30 min every day. Oops I mean 20. Or is it 3 miles, maybe 2? Damnit, no I gotta go read those rules again. I dunno.

I'm pretty much back to square one. I've been a sloth for a year. So, I need some kind of framework to get me back into burning calories regularly.... Because, I still consume them at an alarming rate. I've had 55 years of training to eat 3000 clarlories a day. Slowing down the consumption is harder than upping the burn.

I've been doing the c25k plan to get back to running for a continuous period of time. I'm barley back to 25 minutes 5-ish days a week at way to high of a heart rate. 30 min/day isn't that much, unless you haven't been doing it.

Hopefully, I'll come into day one on a 3-4 day streak. Long way to go.

My plan? Run as many days in a row that my legs will do. Take a rest. Go for another streak one day longer. Once I can do 14-21, start taking intentional rest days and add a double-day. My usual run plan is 9 runs / 7 days with 1 full off day. So, working back to that.

My 100/100 plan... Bug rrh, just a little (slightly less than Dev) ... All in good fun. :o}

If anyone is looking for spiritual enlightenment, here’s the schedule:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaih%C5%8Dgy%C5%8D

30km for 100 days for 3 years
30km for 200 days for 2 years
60km for 100 days for 1 year
84 km for 100 days then
30km for 100 days in 7th year

Easy.

That's where I was before I got soft and squishy/puffy.

Let's use the first 100 days of 100 as a train to train program, so you can start your own personal superhero bionic heart 100/100 ultra club on April 1. The idea is to get you from checks that your brain is writing that your body cannot cash to your body challenging your brain with, 'is that all you got?....just the 100/100 classic...give me more...."

Just to provide context in 2018-19 I built up to ONE 30 min run. in 2019-20 I did the full 100/100 inclusive of running the Dubai 70.3 in the final quarter of the 100/100 in sub 5. Then Covid19 hit and I did 1000km in the first 80 days of Covid19 because pools were shut and I could run again, and I figure rather than be angry at the world, I would just go back to cranking out a 1000km stretch.

Sadly, I am not in shape for a 1000km block right now. But in a perfect world a 100/100 can get you to the point that you can do 1000km of running in a subsequent quarters.

Ah that’s awesome. These ships are astounding. I don’t know what gps tracking looks like when you’re running back and forth at 18 knots ;) also there’s piles of treadmills. Be aware that the water fountains around the track may be shut off due to Covid.

I got my very first Garmin running watch as a birthday present when away on a cruise. I was very excited and went up to the running track at the top of the ship to do a few laps to try it out. I came back and told my husband it must not be set up right as it said I'd done 11 miles when I'd only been running for 30 minutes. It took another minute or two for the penny to drop.......

Triathlon does not appeal to me anymore and I have only been running lately. I haven't really been on the forums because of that. I saw the email come in tonight and thought I would check it out. I have a lot of goals this winter that do not really align with the challenge, so I am out this year.

I'll probably be back in the future, it will just depend on when my goals line up again. This challenge has made me a better runner over the years. I was a 3:55:00 marathon runner when I first joined the challenge in 2018. Yesterday I went sub 3 in very windy conditions. I was able to peak a couple training weeks at 95 miles and I know my strength and endurance was built in part from my three years of 100/100.

I think it is a great challenge no matter what the rules are. You get what you put into it and you should do it for yourself. Throw down hard and make gains. Good luck to everyone on their running this winter!

I'll see your 2018 and raise my 2006. :)

I agree with your comment about "not just a triathlon site". I continue to browse this site because I haven't given up on endurance sports, just competing in tri. I started my athletic life as a runner* and expect to go out as one, however, I still hop on the spin bike now and then (while my road, tri, and mtn bikes gather dust), and most shockingly, took up swimming again at the beginning of 2022 after almost 16 years off.

Although I no longer care about the latest bicycle tech or who's who in the triathlon world, I still find some interesting content from time to time. "Slowtwitch" indeed.

I just wanted to say congrats on the sub 3. Your ability to train endlesslessly without injury (the two comined) are key to the shaving of the 1 hrs you did off your time.

OK let's get thing rolling.

@Tom Hampton, never say never, and yes, I get the "seniors communication" but I take solace that in may age group at worlds I got beaten by 182 FASTER 55-59's and I am not a complete slouch (well I am on the run, but I can swim and bike....I guess that's is what they prescribe to seniors for rehab when they fall in the bath tub)....but over here we are prescribing 100/100.

How about starting a channel swim crossing per month in parallel!!! You in?

First timer here, as well. I'm following a tri plan that calls for 3-4 runs a week. I'll be adding the 3-4 extra runs as traditional or reverse bricks, whenever possible - or how do you deal with having to take one more shower in additional to all the showers you're already taking? :D Reverse, because running off the trainer isn't always smart in our freezing wintertime temps.

The objective is to do the volume while adding minimal injury risk.

Blocking calendar is rule number 1 of being an age group athlete. For 25 years, I have had 11:30-2 pm technically blocked off....I don't use 2.5 hrs to workout (if I am lucky I will get 30-60 to actually use), but others have to schedule on top of that, but generally the rest of the work world tries to get your open slots. You schedule time for working out like you schedule time for making money. If you don't MAKE TIME for workout, you are likely not going to hit them.

I hope you had a great run while winter tires were installed (good time management).

As it turns out, the pool closed 1 hrs earlier than I thought, so rather than do a 1:15 swim at lunch time I got a 30 min swim + 35 min run in and did not have to carve out additional time for running today. I think I will start figuring out when to do the running during this 100/100 as lunch is kind of booked for swimming

Maybe we have to add to 100/100 rules. But you know you can do 4x5 min jogging through the day. No shower needed, barely any scheduling needed!

Run was a big bucket of meh. But that's life sometimes.

After nearly wrecking my truck while driving my mother in law in some freezing rain last year, got a full set of winters. Swapped over to those and had the rear brakes re-done (pads and rotors at 55K...not particularly happy but, here we are).

Tank brought home some bloody plague on Friday that knocked him for a loop all weekend: Covid negative by rapid test for both of us Sunday evening, but by yesterday morning the scratchy throat was on me, and the headache and chills followed yesterday evening after I ran.

Took today off work because just existing this morning was hell, but the headache had faded by mid-afternoon. Tried a little gentle leg day workout (livingroom gym FTW) and seemed functional, so I bundled up like it was 10c colder than it actually was, and ambled around my block 5 times for exactly 5km.

Didn't die, and got to see these pretty little flowers nestled in a blanket of snow. Now to field explanations to my team at work, all of whom follow me on insta and will likely see that I ran on a sick day.. đź¸

haha....the "MEH" run. I think that pretty well defines all my attempts at the sport of running since Oct 2015. But a MEH run is better than no run. Still looking for that elusive, "in the zone bliss run" that used to happen 2-5x per week in a decades past, but I suppose, my chassis is well past the time expired "running career" extended extended warranty period, and the person upstairs is just giving me some free miles but warning me there is no warranty on these miles and the elusive search for the "in the zone bliss run".

1 day down, 99 to go where maybe I can have one of those runs back.

Congrats on the run! I need to get my winter tires on too!!!

I’m so out of shape that a 9:30 pace 2mi made me hit a threshold HR of 172avg 190max. Hahahaha

Anyways this is example of burnout which I am advocating this challenge not reward... Running as many possible times in a day.

Anyways my wife joined, so guess I have to do it :p

It was at Harrisburg, PA - local to me. I was able to exit my own bathroom 45 minutes before the start :)

@dtoce and dev - thank you!

Bluestacks - good to see you here. What year did you get 1st in the challenge with that crazy amount of runs?

Technically, I only said "may never". Likely won't do an OW swim, because it freaks my wife out since the surgery. So, any tris would be pool swims. Which is fine... No love lost between me and ows.

Day 2, is in the books.

I was wrong yesterday. Yesterday marked 5 in a row, and 6 out of 7 (still a first in the last 12 months) . So, today is #6.

Here's hoping for more firsts...

Santa Anna winds here in Burbank today. The hotel was rocking and rolling all night. Back home to Texas fall today. We bought a house on a lake this summer.... So, I have some decent scenery available. Nothing to rival the mistressk, but better than my usual texas farmland.

Seeing my second run in my training log (pulled from Strava) but it’s not showing up in the 100/100 challenge. It’s 2 miles, so it should be eligible. Any reason why it’s not getting picked up? Only thing I can think of is that it was a manual entry into Strava and not a data sync from a watch (forgot to wear one). Does that matter?

Was it "exactly" 2 miles? Maybe it's really 1.9999 with rounding? Just try editing the ST entry and bump the mileage up to 2.01 or something. See it that fixes it...

Otherwise..... Paging Erik...

Started today, a day late but it's all good. This is my 4th or 5th challenge I think. Happy to see the 2 mile counts this year....I really think I can hit 100 runs this year and that is my goal. The trick is to run on ski days, and the 2 mile option makes that much more likely. Here's to a healthy 100 challenge for everyone.!

Mainly a forum lurker here, but I'm going to give this a go.

I'm far to fat, slow and generally unfit for my liking. So I'm looking to get into a more consistent, sustainable training routine than the boom and bust cycle I've been doing over the 10 years or so I've been participating (poorly) in this sport. The 100/100 concept fits very nicely with what I see myself doing over the next couple of years. The full 100 isn't on the cards yet, I'm quite sure that would end in injury for me. So I'm aiming for a bronze 70 something runs. Maybe the full 100 next year.

3 days in, 3 runs done. So I'm enjoying my temporary place close to the top of the leader board. (just don't look at my avg pace)

One hears a lot of interesting sounds out on the road at 6:30AM - birds waking up in the trees; cars/trucks/buses going down the highway about 1/2 mile distant; red-eye flights to & from PHL coming and going overhead - but this morning was accompanied by a unwavering low-frequency industrial hum, that seemed to be coming form nowhere specific but everywhere at the same time

If I had taken Rick Beato's Ear-Training Course, I could tell you exactly what note that was [I'm thinking a G-flat-minor, something]

My route this morning did not take me that way [and honestly, I never go over there], but there is a cement/gravel mill about two miles the other way from me, which certainly could've been the source

It's almost 9AM now, and it's still going --- still droning --- still whining --- still maintaining the same volume and pitch and frequency; unrelenting

My dog is too lazy to run and my cats are a work in progress.

A bit about me:
Been out of triathlon for 22 or 25 years, depending on how you count, excluding tiny ones. (I just realized I forgot something long that I didn't finish about 15 years ago while I was working on my thesis with an advisor who was against my doing tris.)

Anyway, I turn 66 3 days from now and at 160 lbs on a 5'4" frame am about 25 lbs overweight (and 15 lbs over the weight that I can run train consistently and not get injured.)
Since I'm crazy, I'm going to shoot for 3 "runs" per day, about 3k each time, to burn about 1,000 (k)cals per day, in the hopes that I can get down to training weight by the end of the period. (In spite of eating lots of my favorite legume (oops, bean): chocolate.) I'm not COMPLETELY untrained, as I tried 15-19 miles per day walking/running at the beginning of October for about 9 days, but got injured on the last day when I did a non-stop 10 mile run. (My resting pulse dropped about 10 beats to 50.) I also did dev's Olympic distance tri. per day in June last year (VERY slowly), and started dropping weight, but crashed near the end of the time and couldn't see a doctor for several months to deal with swelling in the ball of the foot. (The doc couldn't understand how I'd gotten some crap in my foot.)

Apology: So I'm a work in progress. Please be patient as you watch my average mile times go WAY up. (I will be doing walking at 6-12% on the treadmill (no fan installed) for a number of my workouts, as (for me) this is more fat-burning than running, and the races I'm thinking of doing this year involve a lot more strength than speed. If someone feels this is against the spirit of the rules please contact me. But this is what will keep my head in the game, because if I think of my times I'll get depressed.)

A little more context: I'm "retired", married (to a perennial 29-year-old) and the driver for 6 (homeschooled) kids, ranging from 9 to 22 years, am taking 2 courses this term at U of Md (genetics and physics), and help out the local youth orchestra on violin (and viola, but don't tell anybody). I'm also trying to get some of my family members to participate, but haven't had any luck so far...

Best of luck to everybody, and lets have fun. :-)

Tri or tri not; this is no du. (--- with apologies to Yoda.) Slow triathlete who survived Huntsville, Lelystadt, Colmar, Fontanil, and
Szekesfehervar/Lake Velence. Arbor hydration specialist in a kid's park in Monterrey 4 times in the 1990s (and in the pits in 1994).

My dogs agree and they are also happy with the change to a 20 minute max as I only run with one at a time, but the shorter minimum distance means I am more likely to do 2 runs on the same day - one with each of them.

Great news guys!

Day 2 I had a slot to do a swim + bike at the recreation center, but the pool was set up as glorious 50 LCM.....got out of the pool at 1:15 in with an option of throwing on a run....and there was only one other person in my 50 m of lane and dove back in and made it a 1:45 swim (just shy of 5000m....so defintely covered the 100/100 minimum via swimming but that's not running). Good egg on day 2, 45 min treadmill+weights on day 3.

I did my run before 6AM and got it entered in quickly so I was on the first page for a bit! Yay for me.

Two things; I haven’t started a run that early in a very long time and it’s been a very long time since I have done 3 days in a row at this “distance”. :)

So it’s good so far but not sure I will be able to keep this up.

Hang in there. Biggest tip I got?....slow down. "Run" as slow as you have to in order to be able to run again tomorrow. It will probably take 2-3 weeks for the "fatigue" to truly settle in and plateau. Don't dig the hole too fast, or too deep. Let your body come to you.

Tip #2: Take a rest day, when you need it. Try and stretch the number of consecutive days, by another day each time. eg, 3x, rest, 4x, rest, 5x, rest, etc.... When you can do 7x without a rest day...do a double on day 6, and take day 7 off.

How to progress?

When you can feel good doing that. Add a second double mid-week, without a day-off. That will put you at 8x / 7-days..still with a day off.

You can repeat this again...adding another double to get to 9x / 7 days.

There is no "10 min/ mile rule"

It's a 20-minute minimum; so if you run 12-minute pace and only go 1.6 miles or something, you're good

I wasn't planning on doing it this year, but bike commuting a few days a week has stopped being viable for lack of light (and impending snow/ice/cold). I figured out a funny, nearly time-neutral alternative of driving quickly to a place where the traffic gets bad, then running the rest of my way to work (~5 miles each way), which gives me a few days a week of doubles. That will let me get well above 50 runs for the 100 days, and maybe close to or over 100!

OK, here's my question: Can I count stair running?

I don't have a treadmill but would love to occasionally run indoors for childcare reasons (i.e., someone needs to be home). A possible workaround is to run the flight of basement stairs up and down repeatedly, I did this once last year as a test and posted about it here: https://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=7600790. I'm certainly legitimately running up the stairs and then moving down them as quickly as I can, the overall exertion is high if I push it, averaging near threshold heart rate for run/bike (I calculated for a workout I did last year that I averaged a little under 1000 m/hour VAM). The impact stress of running is certainly there too as a stimulus since I'm doing a lot of descending. Any objections from people to logging 20-min + workouts of this somewhat weird version of exercise (which I'll call "homestair running") in 100/100? I did this once last night and logged it but could easily get rid of it. My watch claimed I was doing sub-10 miles based on its treadmill setting but there's no way that's right based on direct measurement of the distance so I'll just count anything over 20 minutes.

My office building has an ~80 m climb on stairs that I would consider using under desperate circumstances (e.g., icy everywhere outside); I can see more objections to counting this since the most effective gait to do a 3-minute stair climb with (rather than a 3-second stair climb as on a single flight) is actually power hiking rather than running, but I'd love to hear opinions about whether a 20-minute up-and-down workout on those stairs would be countable too in 100/100, and if so what stipulations people would pose.

i see no reason whatsoever that stair running would not qualify. if i run up and down a mountain that qualifies, so, why not running up and down stairs?

Thanks Dale! Tank is basically fine now except for some lingering achiness and congestion - my fever finally broke yesterday morning and while my nose is running more than 2019 bluestacks (welcome back, dude! Glad you decided to come play after all) I'm certainly through the worst of this.

I've been getting out for some gentle run/walks without too much issue (while dressed for weather 10c/18f colder than it actually is), but I'll honour my Friday rest day and won't try pushing doubles this weekend. I have ridiculous plans for 2023 and can't afford to break myself before it even begins! Still grateful to be able to go see stuff like this in my neighbourhood, though.

My pic is more urban than you'd think: I'm usually stuck running around my neighbourhood (suburban-style residential area) during the week, while Tank is at work in a different city with our vehicle - that photo was from down by the stormwater management ponds by the Grand River, down a long driveway in behind a bunch of houses. I'm very grateful that my city and region do have some wonderful trails and conservation areas/tracts in and near town, though, and that living on the edge of the developed area makes for an easy escape from civilization.

Not sure how consistent I'll be after IM AZ Sunday, or the first born next month, but I'll get some miles in when I can.

I am amazed that you knew where that bridge is! :)

Yeah it has not been "cold" yet so I am not really looking forward to what is coming. It seems as I am getting older I find the winters harder to handle. Hopefully this challenge helps it go by fast!

That's nice you can get in run like that close to home; that is a nice mix of the urban/suburban. The pic I took was from a run I started at work so my runs at home will be a little more "suburban". Just not as picturesque as yours as I live on the prairies. And with the distance I am running now I can't even really get out of my subdivision! :)

buddhabelly, I may have had to do a little googling to confirm I knew what I was looking at 🸠I do get some more urban running in when I go into the office instead of WFH, but even then I'm lucky to work very near some lovely urban parks and trails. The weekends are when I really get to have fun in the woods, though!

It is that. We managed to buy a small home just off of Lake Cypress Springs in East Texas, over the summer. We have one immediate neighbor. And there are four other houses in the 'hood' that are permanently occupied---everything else sits empty 99% of the time. So, generally it is dead silent. Our most frequent traffic is Whitetail deer.

There is a State park ~1/4 mile from our house (RV and camping), which is where that picture was taken. There is a very large population of Turkey Vultures in the state park. So, we've taken to calling the place Committee Cove (being the term for a collection of vultures).

One more doggo....This dog started following me on one of my runs a couple weeks ago. I didn't even notice until she licked my right hand on a back-swing. She followed me down to the state park where I finally managed to capture her and call the owners.

Completed 4/4 today at lunch. Including the pre-start streak, today makes 8/8.

I started run/walking on 4 Oct...for the first time in 12 months. I've done a few smattering of things in the interim: some HIIT with my daughter while she was taking a class, and a little bit of Zwift-biking on and off. But, nothing "significant" or of a sustained, progressive overload nature...and, no running to speak of.

My first continuous "run" was back on 6 Nov. Last week was my first 6-day training week. And, now I'm at 8 days straight. Legs are a little flat, but hanging in there ok. HR didn't spike up over 170 today, and I was a bit more "in control" of my pace.

Just trying to keep on truckin' without digging a hole.

Matt Dixon talks about a winter run project that sounds just like the 100/100 challenge, at least how I plan to approach it. Worth listening to at https://castbox.fm/vb/548374440

"Matt applies the method he uses to help athletes break through their running performance and breaks down the nuts and bolts of how you might put a winter running project into action by focusing on a simple, consistent, and soul-filling approach to running and training that will leave you primed for the coming season."

Saw this interesting bit on walking/jogging/running paces as it seems to have come up before:

"This is further confused by the fact that “jogging” and “running” are technically two different things. Jogging is typically considered speeds between 4 to 6 miles per hour (a 10- to 15-minute mile), while running is considered anything faster than 6 miles per hour (a 10-minute-per-mile pace)"

https://www.runnersworld.com/...erage-walking-speed/

And concluded mirroring some of the wise and sage advice provided in this thread:

"While knowing the general population’s average walking and jogging speeds can help motivate you to move more, it’s smart to focus on your own average pace and consider working to improve upon that pace. The key, though, is gradually getting faster.
“One of the biggest mistakes I see new exercisers making is making all of their workouts too difficult. It’s incredibly important to include recovery and â€easy’ days, so that in turn, you can make your harder workouts hard enough. The recovery aspect of training is equally as important. Those who make the most progress are those who truly learn the discipline to go easy when they need to,” Hart says."

Secondary goal would be adding a longer run once per week, after probably week 4. Doable? Absolutely, although maybe not for me and I have to see how it goes. My fitness sucks.

I laid out a self-created plan, loosely based on a combination of Hanson's and 80/20 running. It is 25 weeks structured toward Boston 2023. I have been mumbling about breaking three hours in a marathon for about 30 years. While being achingly close on several occasions, it has never happened. It is time to really commit. I'm 51 now. The window is closing.

The plan has one day off per week and I'm going to try to stick to that, even if it means that I don't get to 100/100. I have really embraced in the last 18 months a lot of easy running and cross training. Both of these things have kept me healthy and running consistently.

This challenge is always a fun way to watch the mileage build.

This place is like hotel California. It sucks you in. I came with some good intention to not overdo it and largely aim at logging 3000 minutes of jogging over 100 days and back end load it.

It looks like already this week I have 285 minutes of running (ahead of the weekly 210 pace to get to 300). But I actually feel good as I had backed off jogging (I can't even call what I am doing running) for 2.5 months.

I don't know about this whole Hotel California metaphor. But, it certainly sucks you in. I've jumped from 11 mpw (mixed run/walk) to 25 mpw (running/jogging) / 200 minutes (by COB today) / 7 days-in-a-row in the first week of this challenge.

I should be considering where to put a rest day. But, every time I say, "how about here?" on the calendar, I immediately look for a spot to double.

Speaking of which....I should go run. Laugh

Week 1 done and dusted, and I ran 5/7 days which has be on pace for my 70 something run target at this early stage.

Was feeling very tired and unathletic this morning, but the 100/100 played quite a big part of getting me out the door for a brick run after my ride. And I'm glad it did too, getting out the door may be hard but once out, it's a great way to start the week.

I'm still coughing pretty badly, too - it's a measure of how awful the flu I had was when a 70% improvement just brings me to the point of still having a miserable cold. Feeling a bit better today, though, and the weather is supposed to be a little less Hoth-like this week; high for the last 2 days has been -4c/25f, which isn't so bad, but winds gusting over 55kph/33mph kept the windchill at -12c/10f.

I went to hide in the trees

Not much snow yet - just enough to make things look a bit dramatic

At least the sun put in an appearance on Sunday when I headed to a neat little tract I haven't visited for awhile

It's all hills and a lot of technical footing - made a little trickier with some ice here and there, and blithely dismissing needing spikes because there was so little snow. Fortunately most of the trails had decent traction, and I was able to stay on my feet, but I definitely worked a little harder on the hills than I had necessarily set out to do while still a bit ill.

The high vantage point near the southwest corner of the tract was whipped by the brutal wind, but the view was worth it!

Bit of slow going in the southern portions that don't see as much use as the dog walker loop near the parking lot - there was clear evidence of chainsaw work to keep the trails open up there, but not deeper in.

The Grand Valley Trail runs through the middle of the tract, so at least there's a line of blazes in the middle of the chaos; sometimes I wonder if these trails were designed by MC Escher.

Made a bit of an error and looped back out to the southwest again (I had thought there was a trail that went up the east side, but it's been awhile since I was there). Despite the cold, did not regret:

I'm 6/7 - not trying a double until this junk is totally cleared out of me!

Best of luck to everybody, and lets have fun. :-)

Reply to Mad Mike.... I did some calculations for you on this. I was interested b/c I am fighting the same battle of the bulge that you are and am the same age as you. So, according to my estimates on all flat ground you would need 60 minutes per day at 8.0 mph to burn 1000 k cals per day. Hopefully for you this is realistic for you; it isn't for me. Right now, 8mph might as well be 800 mph, I can't hang on very long at that pace anymore, although it was no problem at age 60. I have been able to lose 25-30 pounds before, but I have found that without major diet revisions what would have taken 3 months with running, takes a year. Your long distance plan clearly did not work for you. I have to wonder running 21 times a week, when your legs ever recover? The faster your run the more chance of injury. Unfortunately, it seems impossible to dump the weight if the major factor is just running. It comes down to diet I think.

Yep. You can't out-train your diet...really at any age maybe over 30 or so. You have to manage your diet.

If anyone looks deeper into my Activity, they'll see that ALL my runs so far have been outside - I think the avg temp I've been running in has been about 42*

This means three and a half things:
- I love being outdoors, even when it's chilly
- I'm an idiot for trying to burn out this chest cold
- I haven't been to the gym & used the TM in a while; which ALSO means I haven't been doing the strength training that my body "craves"

Thanks for the info/thoughts. You are probably right. (And anyone who can get me back to 8mph is probably halfway to sainthood. ;-)

I would LIKE to be more careful with diet, but my wife cooks very well, and makes a bit of a scene if I either (1) ask for calorie info, or (2) don't eat much, so I'm a bit restrained as far as that goes.

Strangely, my weight shot up at the beginning of this exercise (about 4 lbs in 5 days), but has come most of the way back down since then.

Pulse has adapted to the new "routine" and this morning was down to about 50, the lowest it's been in several months. Legs are now the concern. My goal was to do no worse than 12 minute miles when running outside (sub 11s so far), and at least 6% incline on the treadmill, which I have backed off for the moment, just to get myself into the flow of the project. (I'm trying to do 10 miles/day in 3 sessions.) Currently I'm almost exclusively treadmill since I've felt the knees a bit when running (but no real problems yet,) and I can burn more total calories that way (because of the incline), even at 4mph. I'm also trying to keep effort level low so I'm primarily in the fat-burning range. It's clear, however, that I need to work on the shocks, i.e., I need to (very gently) start bike training again.

As far as losing weight only focusing on exercise, I found that when I (VERY slowly) did dev's Olympic distance tri per day in June last year, I lost about 11 lbs from when I started to 2 weeks after the month was over, so it is doable. This time, if I can get my weight down 16 lbs I can get to a weight where I can actually train, instead of schlep. (Then it's another 10 lbs to my OLD racing weight, which is probably unrealistic.)

So, like a lot of things I've done, I'm treating this as a bit of an experiment. Last year I started the challenge in December with 3-a-days for about 12 days before I broke down, but last year was more restrictive, and I started on the day my car was totalled (by an unlicensed driver) while I was driving it, so I was behind the 8-ball from the get-go last year.

Best of luck, keep in touch, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Tomorrow begins the Thanksgiving Weekend portion 2022 Screaming Tortise Holiday Running Festival

Thanksgiving Day - Alice's Restaurant Massacree
18:34 out [run time of "Alice's Restaurant"] turn around & come back the same route

Day After Thanksgiving - Black Friday 20K Solo Relay
Starting at 5 or 6AM or so, run four 5Ks, separated by at least 4 hours ... if need be, the final 5K can be done the following day

If I can kick this annoying cough by Friday [which seems reasonable], I can get 2 outdoor runs done in the morning [I'm thinking 6A & 10A] before hitting the TM in the afternoon, I should be able to complete the Black Friday, which - along with Alice's Restaurant Massacree] would count as completing ...

25K Holiday Half Ass
Run or walk 25K any time during the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend - Thursday through Sunday. That means you have 96 Hours to complete your race!!! The clock starts with the first step and runs until the last step, unlike the Black Friday 20K Solo Relay where only running time counts

I agree on that. When I used to visit my grandparents and they lived a few floors up in a ten story building I would do sets of ten floors and my heart rate would hit 190 when my max was 195. Ten floors in that building at three meters per floor was 30m of vertical and five intervals of 30m up and down was literally my single hardest run all year. They lived in a really congested part of a city and running 20min after 7am was impossible due to the sea of humans so if I slept in it was stairs intervals

Rule #9 for this years 100/100 says... 9. You can go as slow as you want provided both feet leave the ground on every stride.
If you can get both feet off the ground running up a stairwell, and running down a stairwell, all I can say is that you are one incredible athlete.

Yeah, that is the idea. Stair running is a different animal from stair climbing (walking). Straight up stair running is the hardest single workout I have done to raise cardio (maybe othen than racing 200 butterfly in swimming).

I got my C19 booster yesterday so will minimally back off doing anything today and probably tomorrow and keep heart rate low for the next 5 days.

turkey trot 5k today by my run club. 20:26. My feet were numb the first mile, not sure if it was the cold or riding a fixie 10 miles to the race. disappointed I swam later in the day a 1k in under 18 min which is a fast time for me.

This is my first post on this thread

To follow on the theme of running companions. This is Frankie (our regular neighbourhood visitor). This pic is taken from the riverbank trail behind my house.

Frankie is not a very good running companion, but whenever I run into him, I definitely pick up the pace. Normally, I give him a wide berth.
The neighbours all think that it is time for Frankie to nap for a few months.

On other topics, I really would like to thank Dev and Dan for putting on this challenge. I think that this is the perfect time frame (Nov through Feb). When I look back all of my banner running years have been when I have laid down a solid winter base

A little bit about me. I started running cross country in my first year of high school. That was 60 years ago. I'm 74 now. My last tri was Ironman Canada (the first year that it was held in Whistler). In last year's 100/100, I did 52 runs in about as many days and then came down with Covid. I had complications (blood clots in the lungs) Recovery was gradual as lung function returned to normal. I went from walking to powerwalk to run walk to full running and then another two months to be back to where I was in last year's 100/100 challenge. Since June I have been averaging 165 miles per month (265 km in the Great White North) I have been blessed to have had an extended injury free running period (except for Covid)

Hobbies - in the last couple of years I have been street running (as in the "Run Every Street in Your City") type of challenge. I'm now running neighbouring municipalities (currently the City of Vancouver)

Results/recap

Thanksgiving Weekend portion 2022 Screaming Tortise Holiday Running Festival

Thanksgiving Day - Alice's Restaurant Massacree
18:34 out [run time of "Alice's Restaurant"] turn around & come back the same route
Ran out to the winery & back, it's a little lumpy for the first/last mile, but that didn't hamper me much as I cruised in with 4.4 miles in 37-minutes & change

https://amaltheacellars.com/

Day After Thanksgiving - Black Friday 20K Solo Relay
Starting at 5 or 6AM or so, run four 5Ks, separated by at least 4 hours ... if need be, the final 5K can be done the following day

If I can kick this annoying cough by Friday ...
Nope, still lingering, but improving; still it seemed #illadvisedracing to push it all day long, especially in a chilly drizzle, so I got my daily 5K in and said "that's enough" - just as well, as there was confusion about our Home Care Aide coming in for MIL [she'd didn't], so D'Kid & I binged Wednesday, instead

On Saturday, however, I felt well enough to do the AM run, THEN a bonus in the afternoon, with today's 5K, I completed ..

25K Holiday Half Ass
Run or walk 25K any time during the Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend - Thursday through Sunday. That means you have 96 Hours to complete your race!!! The clock starts with the first step and runs until the last step, unlike the Black Friday 20K Solo Relay where only running time counts

... at about 73 hours?

Churning out *some* mileage. Ran my fastest 5K in three years (thanks, Saucony Endorphin Pro!). Just getting consistency in.

yesterday did 8 miles running, today just 1. I guess the algorithm doesnt spill the days over from yesterday into today (day 13, and it say I only have 12 runs). Or if I at least 3 tomorrow and it spills into today..... or we have to manually adjust?

Nice work.

It looks like with the new run minimum I am 1 run off 100/100 pace. Took a few days off due to vaccine and have been keeping it light. Just over 7 hrs of running in the first two weeks (3:30 hrs per week would be the old 100/100 weekly minimum, now it is 2:20 per week)

Today was the first day I've missed since we started. I even managed to fit runs in while taking care of my whole family who has been down with the flu this week. Unfortunately (and inevitably) I now have it myself, so I won't be jogging around the neighborhood in this condition. I think the dogs are more disappointed than anyone.

Loving the doggo pics - and the NOT DOGGO photo! đźł

Had a beautiful day for a tough run down to the market on Saturday - got heck-all for sleep the night before as I was up til 2am writing, and could feel the impact it had on my lingering flu symptoms. Felt like a cinderblock on my chest (and another tied to my arse) but still a lovely day.

Spent all day Sunday picking my mum up from her home in a town an hour away, driving her back to my town to tour some retirement residences (she has decided it's time to move to somewhere maintenance- and stair-free), then made dinner for her, my husband, and myself at our place before driving her home. Got back to town at 11:20pm and had Tank drop me off at one end of a trail so I could get a run in, finishing at 12:01am.

At least the rain - which had been pouring since 9am - had finally stopped.

Only 3 runs in week 2, so for now I've dropped off the pace to make 70+ runs. Plenty of time to make it back though, I'm expecting to be back to 5 this week.

Seeing everyone is sharing dog pics, here is a photo of Charlie from a previous run. She's done the run training for 2 Ironmans and who knows how many half marathons. She's getting on a bit, and not so keen on harder efforts any more, but is good at keeping easy runs easy.

Grey hair and all.... :-) I tell you what, I'm the spitting image of my Dad's Dad in that photo...at roughly the same age. Its funny to see, and it catches me off-guard sometimes. I still remember the first time I looked at a photo and my lizzard brain said, "that's a funny picture of <dad> or <grandpa>." only to realize 2s later, "oh...that's me."

Good times, my niece in yellow in back (behind me), my daughter in black next to me, my sister in red rain coat, my nephew with "the hair", and my BIL lower-right corner...taking the group-selfie. The Lady's all walked the 5k, while the Men ran. BIL and I finished before the rain started up, but we had 3 solid rain events while the nephew and ladies were finishing. Standing in a tech-tee in 35F and rain....gets C-c-cc-c-c--c-c-cc-OLD.

With Dad's 80th B-Day on Saturday, I dropped back by 4 over the entire week. I doubled on Sunday (another first in a long while), to regain one. So, I'm sitting at 12 / 15, and 3/4 way down page-2 as of my lunch-run. I might try for another double tonight on the TM. It'll take a week or two to claw back to Par. But, I'm happy to be back to regular consistent running, and able to pull off the odd double every now-and-again.

It was unseasonably tropical here today. Its been raining and (texas) cold since the Turkey-trot. Today, its 77 and sunny and humid. Heat/humidity-acclimation = 0! Tomorrow we plunge back down into the 30s, and more rain. Good old late-fall in Texas.

Today finally beat my rival at November Projects once a month hill repeat race. This makes up for my turkey trot disappointment. I suggest you all try a November Project workout (in most large cities). It is basically a body weight / running workout group. This race we do burpees before starting each steep hill repeat (500m down, 500m up). This pic is about the point I over took him.

Ah...sorry, some context would have helped. No, no forest fires.

We bought a new home. In previous years, all my running was all done on farm-to-market roads in a mostly non-descript, central texas, farm land / country-side. Its "fine" but, not exactly scenic.

This new house is in the East Texas Piney Woods, just off of Lake Cypress Springs. I haven't found any trails, as of yet. But, the roads through the lakeside neighborhood are nice and quiet enough. As noted in other posts, lots of trees, and wildlife. The security cameras capture lots of critters in the middle of the night, and sometimes during the day. We see deer every single day, and foxes a couple times a week.

I find it easier to do doubles once my "regular" run is above the minimum. A couple of things I've done in the past:

1. Slow down to a "crawl" on your regular runs. This will help to minimize the cumulative stress, and improve your ability to recover.
2. Extend a couple of runs a week to longer than the minimum, by 2-3 minutes each week. This may take 2-3 weeks to gain enough "ground". Once you can do a 30m run, you can do a 30m run + a 10m run (with the required 1 hr gap) as a double.
3. Take a day off anyway. Let your body catch up to the stress. Once you've recovered, you'll be better positioned for a double then next go 'round. 17 days in a row is a lot, esp when every run is your "max".

Once you can do a 30m run, that second 10m run isn't too much of a hurdle to get over...since, its only 1/3rd of your max. But, a second 20m run when your max is 20m means you are literally doubling your daily volume when you are already "tired".

Just witnessed the power of doping. As I am biking by the half way house nearby, see a guy randomly dancing in the street. He sees my bike and starts matching the pace! Timed him at a sub 60 second 400m (under 4 min mile) pace, not winded one bit. After he stopped I tried to ask him if he was some ex runner but he was into another dimension....

heh signs that make you want to say f* it and quit but somehow we are out there the next day...

After a few light days post vaccine 4 and travel over to Europe for biz I am on 100/100 pace and a bit ahead of my target of 3.5 hrs per week (7x30 min quota). Because I had no pool access I had a few days with doubles, including last two days where I ran around the Berlin marathon finish stretch in front of the Brandenburg gate faking like am Kipchoge but running 2x slower (he is going at sub 3 per km me at sub 6 per km).

I don't generally like running with a phone because it is my chance to unplug from work life so here are stock images:

As far as the run count goes, I'm liking this 2 mile minimum a lot in terms of how sustainable the challenge is with limited total training time! At 25/20 after a week with a cold with relatively low volume and intensity, managed to squeeze in two doubles in the past few days and should get a few more this week. Won't be anywhere near the volume I had in 2019/2020 but might come close to or beat the 124/100 count I got that year.

There are a lot of definitions of greatness. But, at 54 I'm past most definitions except perhaps to help and encourage others. I'm more than cool with the fact that whatever raw performance glory days I may have had are locked in 35 years ago.

That said, after doubling 3x last week to pull back within 1 of par, I took Saturday off. The legs were tired from 9x in 6 days. I was only able to squeeze one run in yesterday between pulling christmas decorations out of storage, and picking up, loading, and unloading a chord of firewood.

I did manage to double again today, so... I'm back within one. Things are starting to feel more like running: HR is more controllable, and it's getting easier to run easy. My stride feels more natural and less "forced".

Keep on trucking.

I was literally in Frankfurt for 20 hrs before making my way to Berlin via 4 hrs for some meetings in Cologne. I anticipate the need to be back to Cologne+dusseldorf once more before 100/100 is over. Right now as it turns out I ended up doing more running than I was targeting (seems like I am doing more like 4 hrs per week vs 3.5 hrs meaning because of running being more accessible while on travel.

I expect to get back more in the pool now and less running

He is definitely faster and has more endurance than our old dog. I was holding him back because I was trying not to throw up the delicious breakfast I ate this morning which still didnt digest and the leash was tied around my stomach tight. He definitely has more in him as I forced stopped him at the mile. Result was 5:24, old dog 5:55 where I had to pull him to finish

I don't normally reply to posts, but I like reading the forum quite a lot! This year I decided to join the 100/100 with two friends of mine. I'm currently only one run off the pace (run 26 done and dusted today), and am planning to do two runs on tuesday to catch up. This challenge is very inspiring to me (and both of my friends - we have a whatsapp chat to keep up) so thanks a lot!
Just out of curiosity... can I still register and log my runs on this website as well? I don't really like using Strava, so I'd have to file everything manually, but it might be fun to do so. If I'm caught being too late, shame on me of course! If I make it to the end of this challenge, I might 'officially' join next year!
Good luck to all you runners out there!

It was overcast and chilly Saturday, though fortunately not with the same 70+kph winds and lashing rain as last week (short video clip). Definitely not looking very wintry, though.

The overnight chill and frosty breeze did make perfect conditions for pearl ice, though, at the upper section of Devil's Creek Falls

(This bit is only 2' high - the main fall is down through a narrow, curved canyon approx 50' high)

The drops of splashing water accrete on the rocks and leaves below when temps are below freezing, and the effect is beautiful

Second run was a bit challenging in the dark because the trails I was running were mostly covered in a thick layer of fallen oak leaves, which served to hide the roots and rocks. Even where there weren't any leaves, I always find it tougher running trails after dark when everything is dirt covered rather than bright with snow.

I finished up just before a flurry of graupel blew in, got some errands done, and headed home. The next morning I awoke to a winter wonderland!

Not quite enough for snowshoes, but definitely enough to make me remember a wise friend's recent words: "If you wonder if you should wear spikes, the answer is yes". I grabbed my ExoSpikes as the trails weren't super hilly or technical and the snow wasn't very deep - not enough for snowshoeing yet (short video clip)

Milder temperatures made the snow sticky, so it clung to even the finest of branches through the afternoon

Second run Sunday was on more of a rail trail for convenience, and the fun of a night run with no headlamp under the low cloud

There's one spot where the trail and the river it loosely follows both pass under a major highway (the 401), and the gap between the westbound and eastbound lanes makes an interesting view at night

First back-to-back doubles for this year, and it went ok - hoping I can put in a few more double days while I have some time off over the holidays. I'm still 1 run down from 100 pace due to my weekly Friday off, but I should be able to make them up soon now that I'm feeling more recovered from that stupid flu.

Welcome! I'm certainly not an authority on the subject, but I think you can join the challenge at any time and it will bring in any workouts you enter into the Training Log dated 11/15 or after.

Greetings from black and white Finland. Not that much snow yet, but the temperature (-15 C / 5 F) is getting quite wintery already.

It's good to have this kind of motivational challenges. I'm sure that without I'd end up just skipping too many of my short ~20-30 min runs in winter-time (even though these are exactly what my post-tendonitic achilles tendons needs).

What’s “not much snow” in Finland-speak, 2 meters?

đź‚ Even though we are quite north its not that bad (thank you Gulf Stream). Where I live, its currently maybe 20 cm and gets eventually somewhere between 50 and 100 cm. I think all-time-high in Finland is quite close to 2 m (~1000 km north from here).

Yay! MistressK snowy pix!

It was a good week for running. I made it out most every day, except for an intentional day off, and even managed back to back double-days over the weekend to get up to +1.

We spent the last several days out at the lakehouse. So, I can contribute to the scenery (no snow here in TX, tho').

Out little house by the lake. We bought this place back in July. We aren't quite on the lake, but its only about 500 ft away (there's a finger less than 100 ft away...but, its only 8' wide and 6 inches deep...so, that's not really the lake proper).

It's a nice little area, and there's lots of scenery to run through. I haven't found any trails, yet...but, it was quite wet, rainy, and muddy. With the heavy clay in Texas that's not really conducive to running anyway...unless you just like 15 lbs of mud, and its bad for the trails.

We have lots of Herons in the area. My wife's favorite bird. This guy was just hanging out, until I decided to take a couple of pix:

We don't get the colors like y'all do up north where it gets colder. But, we've had better than usual colors this year for some reason:

It was a dreary week with lots of rain. But, the bruised and sullen storm clouds are kinda fun, too. There were still enough breaks in the weather to get out and run every day either in light drizzle or even some breaks in the clouds:

There’s something really cool about running in the snow, I imagine out on that road the only noise is the crunch if your footsteps. I love Finland.

I’m relatively on track for myself but off-pace for 1 a day. Which is totally ok I’ve realized. If I don’t want you run, I don’t run, and I’m proving this only to myself so I’m feeling good about that.

I have also found that my pace has increased by about 1:00/mile since the challenge started, and I only had about two weeks of consistent running before that. HR is coming down too, so that’s good.

This morning was "harder". My legs felt heavy and both calves were thinking about giving out. :)

My run this morning was in -25C (-13F) weather. The cold for us has just started so this will get interesting.

I still have not done any doubles but would like to do one so I can take a day off. See how it goes.

But, a second 20m run when your max is 20m means you are literally doubling your daily volume when you are already "tired".

some really, really excellent advice for those wanting to push the distances up safely during this challenge now that we've got a solid number of runs under our belt

Hi all,

Things are going swimmingly so far. (well runningly). Due to the holiday schedule I’ve only been doing 2 mile runs lately. They’ve been less than 20 minutes long, does that still count? They’ve been added to my calendar, but don’t show up in the totals. I’ve been stuck at 36 runs for past 3 days. Thanks for organizing this. It’s the key for getting through the winter!

they count. it's 2mi OR 20min. if either is achieved it's a run.

Blue - Just out of curiosity I looked at your recent runs on the training log, and it looks like you are only getting a little under 100 cal/mi on your runs. Are you really light in weight??? The treadmills I use at the gym give me about 150 cal/mi at 180 lb, 6'2", and 7 % fat. Assuming a straight line graph,100 cal/mi would imply about 120 lb, and you appear to be getting around 98 cal/mi or roughly 117 lb weight. Are you that light or is this a case of diff treadmills giving diff cal/mi??? And if you are that light, how tall??? Just curious b/c of your incredible ability to crank out 130-140 mi/wk, with an avg of about 90 mi/wk over last 6 weeks.

Hey eric - I'm 6'0" about 164lbs right now, but I have raced at 155lbs recently. I'm not sure where the calorie data is coming from. I use a very old sole treadmill with a Garmin that uses bluetooth to connect to the zwift app on android phone. My weight is mostly accurate on Garmin Connect and Zwift. I was running consistent 90+ mpw on the pavement this fall, so a string of 120+ on mostly treadmill has been surprisingly well received by my body. Time to run in my schedule has been my biggest issue lately. I had a slow start to the 100 days because I was coming off a marathon, but after healing up for 3 weeks, jumping back into the high mileage has been going well for me.

My treadmill gives 95 cal/mile at 0% incline and 210 at 12% for someone 150 lbs. Extrapolating to 180 lbs that would be 114 at 0% and 252 at 12%.

I wish I could talk about 7% fat. I'm 5'4", 158 lb, and "I don't want to know" body fat. I HAVE broken through one set point, i.e. about 3 lbs, for my almost 500 miles of "slogging" at about 25 lbs over race weight, but at least I can blame 2 family birthdays + Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a 66-year old metabolism.

Blue: Fantastic job; helps me keep going during the times each day when I'm just not into it. (And do you also live in Maryland, or is it just your tag line?)

Tom H: I know you've passed through a lot; I hope you're on top of things soon and your holiday isn't entirely ruined.

mistressk: Phenomenal photos with great commentary. Allows me to "live it" without having to feel the cold parts of it. (I've had hypothermia in over 20 races.)

dev: Thanks for getting these things going. Your June 2021 challenge helped me drop from 167 to 155 and get off my mono-thematic focus on academia (+wife and 6 kids) and inspired me to get off my duff after almost 2 decades out of sport.

Thanks. Yeah, I'm doing better. I had a course of paxlovid going within 15 hours of onset. Cough& drainage are starting to subside, requiring less OTC drugs to manage. Yesterday, I was clock watching for the next dosage windows. Today, I'm annoyed by the alarm going off...and, waiting another hour or two before bothering to get up and go take the next round of tylenol or sudafed PE.

My daughter got molnupiravir instead (pax. interacted with some other drugs she takes). It has been a slower road for her. I think she went a little longer before she was able to get a script, and Molnupiravir is less effective than pax, also. So, its taking a little longer for her to get onto a improving slope.

Strangely, my wife has been completely immune to it all. Normally, I would say she has the least robust of immune systems.

Yeah buddy, there should be a button to allow you to join the challenge. Just manually input all your data if not using Strava. It doesn't matter how far back you need to back date the activities. Welcome to the challenge and enjoy the gains!

Well, I guess it's a bit of a "crap shoot" as to how many cals we really burn in running or whatever. Swimming is even less precise than running with estimates all over the place, I guess due to the big effect of a person's form on how easily they swim. As a realistic person on ST said sometime ago, the only we can know with relative certainty are numbers on the scale, e.g. whether our weight is going up or down, or staying relatively constant. :)

Hi, I don’t post much but I like reading the forum and I often learn stuff here. I was thinking about this challenge beforehand, but I took a big spill on a trail and blew out my shoulder before it got going. That required some time off until vibration no longer hurt when running, so I was off to a late start.

Now, the running frequency challenge fits pretty well with my return to action, so I decided to late sign up and see how well I can do by the end. 100/ 100 is still my goal, although I have a little catching up to do.

So far, the challenge has nudged me out the door on a few â€marginal’ days, running in snow, with lights in the forest in the dark, and even on hotel treadmills when traveling for work, which I never used to bother with. So… mission accomplished already!

I’m not much of a photographer, but I run some interesting places. Maybe I’ll see if I can take some decent photos to post. Looking forward to following the rest of everyone’s challenge and hopefully picking up some extra motivation along the way.

That sucks, but ...

You could use the training log as an "official" counter and try to get as many runs in as you can before it closes March, then just add in you own remaining days of "overtime" until you reach 100

I'm sorry ... I'm still thinking about this

So, there are people who have joined Slowtwitch.com and created a profile, logged into the Training Log, linked it to their Strava account, and enrolled in the 100/100 challenge, yet remain Lurkers

The questions are:
1) How did they find ST?
2) Who told them about the 100/100 Challenge?
3) How did they find the Training Log?
4) Why aren't they posting?

Slowtwitch isn't Fight Club; you are more than welcome to talk about it - encouraged to do so, even*

I had a line on my Profile on another Running Forum that I used to attend which said "Non-Repentant Slowtwitcher"

* I'm guessing some people found out about ST from other members who are already doing/have done 100/100 and they were curious enough to come on over, so maybe #2 happened before #1 for them?

Maybe next year we make a requirement that each participant needs to make at least ONE forum post within the 100 days to validate results - it could be "Hello, I'm in" or "Hello, I'm done" or "You people are weird" or anything at all

I lurked for a long time before I made my first post. I think I have been here for 10+ years and I still don't post much but I check in every day for my endurance news fix and forum hijinx.

I think anything that directs more traffic to ST should be encouraged. Who knows? Maybe someone who shows up for the 100/100 becomes Dev Paul in 10 years.......

Merry belated Christmas hundred-ers!

Still running (though haven't had time to update my training log for awhile) and on pace to make 100, while working through a sick cat and trying to move my mum to a retirement residence. We got hit with the nasty winter storm late last week and very cold temps for a bit (laughing a little over "extreme cold Florida" - my wool neck gaiter froze solid on me both times I was out last Saturday), but it's now turned mild and rainy so all the lovely snowshoeing/xc skiing conditions were fleeting. A couple of weeks' worth of photos:

Saturday the 17th was a beautiful day - sunshine, swans on the river, enough snow to look pretty but not to make running difficult.

Also enough to reflect the glow of the city lights so I didn't need a headlamp for most of my 2nd run

..though I turned it on to highlight an annual tradition

I don't know who puts the wreath there, but I'm always happy they do

A bit grey the next day, but still beautiful in the woods - the dusting of snow highlighting the fascinating root patterns

Monday I went into my hometown to help out my mum, but since I end up getting there very early (we only have one car; my husband works in my hometown, an hour from where we live, and has to be at work for 8.30am) so I went for a run when I arrived to let my mum sleep in.

Gorgeous morning with flurries of shining snowflakes falling through the brilliant sun

This is part of a trail my father - who passed away 10 years ago - used to walk each day. Running it felt like a way to say goodbye to a town that has been such a huge part of my life (I lived there for 20yrs, moved away, moved back for 1.5yrs, and moved to my current home in Nov 2003. I continued to work there until Aug 2020).

I went into the office for the last time before our holiday shutdown on Tuesday the 20th, running from the office after dark - I'm lucky to have beautiful lit, maintained pathways very near my office!

Some really neat icicles off a maintenance building caught my eye

I worked from home Wednesday, but was back into Mississauga on Thursday to help my mum out again. I found that the Culham Trail covered much more area than I'd thought, and passes through the Riverwood Conservancy, which I decided to check out.

Some neat wood carving in a dead tree:

The Credit River

There's a bit of singletrack, as well as the groomed trail itself

Was grateful I'd brought spikes!

..and also grateful for another beautiful day to explore. I saw the trail continued well beyond where I followed it, but I didn't have time for more than the 9km I got in. I was gutted that I was only discovering this gem in time to sever my ties with the city, but I'm thankful I got to see it!

Friday off, then back to the market Saturday via a now much snowier trail

It was bitterly cold: -15c/5f, with a windchill of -27c/-17f and powerful gusts that made the iced-up branches creak and crack as I ran through the woods.

It was even creepier after dark, though the wind had eased a bit (from 75kph/46mph down to 54kph/33mph) - still no headlamp required

Christmas morning I finally got to take advantage of all the new snow with a snowshoe run! Was rather grateful I was wearing them when I got to the top of a hill with just a small line of low trees between it and an open field to windward - the drifting was a bit of a challenge!

I actually got a round of applause from a couple who were walking the other way as I ran past, though they may also have been taken with my outfit

(I made the skirt and mittens out of some polar fleece last year, and the latter have sleigh bells sewn on which ring when I run)

Some more running through Narnia on Boxing Day, after a lovely xc ski with my sweetheart

Then another snowshoe run on the 27th, in the awesome Semi-Rad hat my husband got for me for Christmas

He had to work Wednesday, so I was without a car to get to any trails - ordinarily I wouldn't bother posting a photo from a road run around my neighbourhood, but..

Yesterday I was back into Mississauga to help out again, and found yet another new-to-me trail - Sawmill Valley, which connects to the end of the Culham trail

Crossing the Credit River on the pedestrian bridge from Erindale Park

Lots of boardwalks - this is probably very marshy in wet years

The trail was mostly clear, which was a good thing as I hadn't brought spikes - there were still some icy patches, but they were runnable or avoidable in the shoes I wore

Sawmill Creek is absolutely stunning, though, with its many tiny stepped falls

A little more than 9.5km later, and once again I'm grateful to have been able to see all this at least once before my association with the city ends.

Happy new year to you all!

Beautiful!

Love the icicles (and your smile)!!

getting close to the halfway point and for the first time in history, I am still holding pace--46/46 as of today with another double to catch up....

will have more challenges with a few getaways coming up but it's always a 'do your best, forget the rest' kind of thing-

Thank you for these. I always enjoy your pictures and perspective. The picture of your father's trail really stuck a chord with me.
This has been a weird Christmas.

Between the early winter storm, and covid running through our household starting the 20th (daughter first, me second, and now my wife) ... plans were essentially, canceled.

In addition Mom's dimentia has really advanced in the last couple months. It's too the point that she's largely incoherent, and can no longer distinguish memories, hallucinations, and reality. There are still occasional glimpses of her (mostly in the mornings), but they are rarer and "less". My guess is this was the last holiday season with some chance of remembering things WITH her. We'd planned to spent the week together with the extended family. Sometimes the world makes different plans for you.

Anyway... I lost 6 days of running to covid. I did manage a feeble, but qualifying attempt at a run today. So I'm 40/46.

Congrats on this!!!

If I have it right today is day 50 of 100/100.

I remember when I did my first 50 in the winter of 2006-2007. Hitting day 50 and not missing a day felt like a massive achievement. Up to then, I had never run more than 10 days in row in my life. I think as of today I have done 46 runs on the new 20 minutes target, and at 26 hrs total, so on track to hit 50 hrs at 100 days which would be the volume equivalent of the old 100/100 minimum. Let's see. Some days body feels pretty good, other day, still getting better from disc reinjury last summer. I have been mainly jogging really slow with a rehab focus and it is working. There are some days that I do 10 min jogging before work on treadmill at home and then do 10-15 min more after swimming. I hit the minimum for the day and keep a lid on things in terms of making forward progress. So its all good. Some day I think I will be set for the 4x half IM's I had already signed up for next summer some days I think that will be too much ! Let's see, but the current jogging routine is just about right.

Your miles and duration is super impressive - the motivation and inspiration goes both ways. A lot of stories on this thread motivate me. I enjoy logging in now and then to read how everyone is doing. I'll try to post an update this week. I have an interesting "Last Man Standing" race coming up this Saturday. It looks like I managed 37 miles (in 8 runs) in the last 7 days. Who knew?! I hadn't been paying attention, but was scrolling through Garmin after running today, and saw the 7-day total. That's the magic of just running every day.

Still slow, but, hopefully that will come around in the next few months.

I'd planned on doing another 5k check last weekend (race was Saturday). But, I opted out since I'm still getting back to normal post-covid. I did my first harder effort since I tested negative, last night. Just a "faster" set of 1600/800/400 at 5k-ish effort (a sad pace at that) with 400m rest.

Yeah. Already started looking for another one. Jan thru early-Feb seems to be a lull in the local running calendar, the Dallas Marathon is right before Christmas...and, it seems like everyone takes a break for 6 weeks after that.

Did not hang bike up (still biking 8 to ten a week and racing bikes).

But it's fun

There's no such thing as "too late" you can still sign up, and upload your data back to the begining. Even if you just started 3 weeks ago cold, that's still plenty of time to get to 70+.

The challenge is at least keeping me running a lot more consistently than I have in years- not sure if I’m in better shape, but maybe a better base to start ramping up outdoor runs. Good luck all- keep up the streak!

I made a post a while ago but somehow my phone timed out and it was lost.

Anyway, I’m here. Building up from some injuries and issues and am trying to hit 65-70 mpw now. I ideally want to be back at 80-90 for a late spring marathon. I ran 2:22 at CIM a few years ago and know there’s some more time to be found. How much is yet to be determined!

Still need to proceed gingerly and limit the speed as my hamstrings are prone to strains as happened a couple weeks ago.

I'm in a similar sitch. When I saw this promoted on New Year's Eve, I assumed it started the next day, January 1. So I guess I'm going more for a 50/50...or 52/52 or whatever it works out to. I did find and join the Strava group (same user name as here), but still have to get it synched up to this forum.

As above, if you've been running since the start of the challenge, and you connect and sync your strava, it will load all your runs going back to the beginning (with enough prodding)...and you will get credit for those that meet the rules in the OP. In which case, you will be better off than you think.

You will just need to select the 2 or 6-month time period to sync with strava instead of the default 2 weeks. Also, with the longer time-frames there is a limit to the number of workouts that slowtwitch will pull from Strava. So, you may need to sync several times in order to get everything to pull across. When you sync you will get a response message such as:

Out of 58 activities in the last 60 days, 0 were added and 58 already existed (0).

When you get the "0 were added" you know everything has been synced.

Welcome to our new posters!

After heavy rain last Friday, it snapped very cold overnight and turned to snow - the layer of ice made the snow stick to everything, so it was beautiful running down to the farmers' market Saturday morning!

This section of trail is usually quite wide open, but the snow load on the saplings bent them down so there was barely room to pass through without crouching.

The tall grasses in the field (frequented by deer and wild turkeys - you can also just make out the osprey nesting platform among the trees on the right) were quite dramatic under their white blanket

It was pretty chilly (-11c/12f), but the sunshine was marvelous!

Second run on Saturday started just as the sun set, though there was still plenty of light in the sky

It got darker as I pushed further into the tract, finding tunnels of snowy branches to run through

(I love the "night sight" setting on the Pixel 6)

Sunday brought another sunset run - a little less dramatic due to 2 sunny days having led to a lot of the snow falling out of the trees, but still plenty of drama

The lake at Shade's Mills Conservation Area is a dam-controlled reservoir, and very popular for ice fishing - the strange objects you see on the ice surface here are stumps exposed from the reduction in water levels implemented every winter (I suspect to concentrate the fish in the deeper portion of the lake), covered in snow that blew away from the ice itself.

This is the creek that flows into the reservoir

Still some delightfully marshmallow-y branches in the shadier spots.

Of course, it mostly went and melted yesterday! We had freezing rain overnight, then mild air causing some incredible fog to rise from the remaining snow.

First race of 2023 up on Saturday - a 25k trail race put on by a friend of mine, in a brand new location whose (privately owned) trails I've never seen. Supposed to rain a whole lot tomorrow so instead of a snowy romp it's more likely to be a mudfest, but those are their own kind of fun!

Oh, I will (baring heart surgery). I doubled on Monday. But, that was probably a bad plan seeing as it was supposed to be an easy day (per plan). Note to self: 2x easy != more easy. I'll try doubling on my bigger day tomorrow, that's probably a better plan.

Thanks, Tom. For me this will not work since I created the Starva account on January 1...just for this actually. Best I could do would be to remember how many times I ran in the first 50 days. Probably 45-47, but I'm not going do that. But thanks again for the instructions, and maybe it can help Stevie or others who joined late too!

first ever track meet trying to run off the blocks....
and as the saying goes, "never try anything new on race day". standing warm ups 200m @ 38, 100m @ 18. Setting up on start blocks from shorter person, ref stated to me "are you ok?" right before the start. So yea completely akward set up. Hit my seed time of 34 for 200m. Blocks make you faster, but not if you dont know how to use them. Glad I tried, next time I wont.
I am happy to report I am finally toning down the miles and after delaying 2+ years to work on the 200m. Ideal goal is sub 30. anyone else working on speed here? I think it has been really helping my 5k, basically I do one session of week of 200m *4

Hello from Pemberton BC.
Sorry to offend by being part of the challenge but not posting. I didn't realise that was bad form.

But I'd like to say I love this challenge and thank you.
It's been really positive for our family.
I'm doing this to gain the habit of running every day, and so far I've only missed one day with a sore throat.
I have the advantage that my husband is doing this too, so we are helping each other get out the door.

What has been surprising is that I don't feel like I need a day off, and that on days when I'd usually rest, going for 20 or 30 mins feels really good.
I want to keep this going once the 100 days are up.

Another awesome outcome is that our 11 year son has started running with us on some days.
At the start of the challenge running at a steady pace was really hard for him. Now he's doing awesome.

That's super cool that your son has started joining in. Lifetime habits start early.

I managed to run outside today for maybe the first time in January...no, I ran outside on the 1st. But, not since then. The quads definitely feel the pavement tonight. I also squeezed in a second run on the TM while my wife was napping. So, I'm now two back from par. Slowly clawing back from covid.

Every year for 100/100 I have at least one run in below zero F temperature; so far this year it was -5 F with -32 F windchill. I prefer to run outdoors and the only thing that stops me is pouring rain or if I happen to be in an area that is unsafe for outdoor running.

Nothing particularly special - just the widest and most cushioned road or trail shoes I can find. I wear wool socks year-round, so the only real winter modifications are using screw shoes (occasionally; I don't find them very effective below -10c/14f), or some kind of slip-on traction device. Kahtoola's ExoSpikes are the best all-round ones I've found, though I use a knockoff version of their MicroSpikes on more technical trails. The only other weather concession is some neoprene toe covers (for running; not cycling ones) for slush or freezing rain, because I have some previously frostbitten toes from a trail race at -42c/-44f a few years ago that are still troublesome when they get wet in cold weather.

I feel a welcoming atmosphere here so I’ll give my thoughts after 77 days.
This is my 1st time participating in this challenge. Usually I don’t run much at this time of year, my run record from previous years in this 100 days frame must have been max 30. Maybe less.
I think the hardest part about this challenge and running so frequently in the winter is the amount of laundry. It’s hard to keep up đź‚

I have tried before, but the difference between 20 and 30 minutes is huge. Right now I’m 17 runs behind, but still *ahem* in the running. I finally caught COVID in late November which accounts for about 12 days… I will be pretty proud if I hit even 90/100 but I’m trying for 100, so I’ll need to be pretty tactical about the days I run just once over the next 3 weeks.

I'd be lying if I said this year wasn't a struggle. The challenge started when I was on my 40th anniversary. We went on our first cruise, 8 day eastern Caribbean. The ship had a very nice track but running wasn't on my priority list. I did manage to get caught up in December but then in a race on January 7th I hurt my back and I couldn't run, much less walk, for two weeks. Fast forward to today and I've been running 2-3 miles a day for the past two weeks. I think I'm just about over this back injury and hope to start some two a days to get to 100 before the challenge ends. And just to be clear, I do not believe my injury had anything to do with running every day (there's a lot of discussion about that before the challenge begins).

I finally clawed my way back to par, actually 1 over (or should it be under?... 81 of 80)...with my first triple this year.

Less than 3 weeks to go people. Time to finish strong!

I've lost almost 10 lbs during this challenge, and maybe gained about 30s/mi in pace. Legs are feeling pretty good.

How's everybody doing?

You know, haven't been on ST too much this winter as been heavy workload, but just realized I was tracking along on a 100/100 without even knowing it. Just looked at my data - 82/80 currently...but more importantly for me, 657 miles (300 even for month of Jan) in those 80 days... which I believe we pay big dividends in Boston this April.

Cheers everyone!

It's been quite an adventure.

Partly as an experiment, I decided I would shoot for 300 runs in 100 days. (I missed 2 the first day due to logistics, so I'll finish my 100 days the day after everybody else.)

The goal was to become a triathlete again after a long time off (although I did do Dev's Olympic distance per day last June, but wiped out near the end and couldn't see an orthopedist to get the crap out of my foot for over 2 months.) The other big goal was to get under 145 lbs, as over that I always got lower leg injuries when run training (25 years ago).

At the beginning my weight was 162 and my pulse was mid-60s.

Amazed my body held together as well as it did. I started at about 10 miles per day and gradually upped it to an average of 15/day for days 31-60, with an average over a half marathon up to that point. This is the most I've ever done and, needless to say, the most regular I've been about it. (I'm thrilled as I turned 66 on the 6th day of the challenge.)

My difficulty came in when I started to try adding the bike, which invariably got me injured. (I had some of these issues before day 60 but was able to work around them, partly by limiting speed.) But I had to back way off for about 20 days to let my legs heal.

Now it seems like I've gotten over the hump and can manage both running and biking. (Yesterday I got in 15 miles on the treadmill and 46 on the trainer; in addition, the quads don't feel dead after I do the bike.)

Other solid progress is that my weight is 151-152, my pulse is 50 (although the 40s play peek-a-boo with me sometimes in the mornings,) and most of my non-treadmill runs are about 10 mins/mile.
(But disappointed I've only lost 11-12 lbs with over 100,000 cals exercise...)

(Agnostic) prayers that everyone is doing well, esp. dev and rcmioga.

Hopefully the hour (2 am) has not made this incoherent. Now I just need to make another attempt to get the kids to go to sleep....

I have really meant to emerge from lurk before this - after the first week, first month, first 50 days - but lurking, it seems, is a difficult habit to break.

I have been wanting to take on the 100/100 for years but this year it finally seemed doable. First, I wasn’t starting from zero, I had been running 3-4 times a week. Second, reducing the minimum to 2/20 made it approachable. Third, I’ve had a friend who I’ve been running with since high school join as well. Finally, I moved from Southern California to the dark and cold Pacific NW and I feared for my sanity if I didn’t keep exercising through the winter.

I’m one run shy of par at the moment (took a day off after the first week), and all in all I’ve been surprised at how doable it has been. I thought the cold would be the chief obstacle, turns out it’s the footing. The weeks of running on sheets of ice with spikes on my shoes were not exactly enjoyable. And I’ve sprained an ankle twice, which sucks.

Thanks Slowtwitch for the community and the challenge. It’s nice to be here.

Hmm... I wouldn't attribute to age or sex-assigned-at-birth. People are just different. And this challenge, while not "hard", is not easy. Less than half of those who chose the sign-up (216 / 600) have completed greater than half of the runs.

Most people aren't into the daily grind. The fatigue of every damn day and sometimes twice, isn't always fun. Besides, I'm not entirely convinced of the utility of the 100 runs in 100 days... As a plan. So, for many if the suck isn't fun, and there really isn't a point.... Then what is the point?

Lol. Nice time considering... (hope I can get back there at 54).... But, no I don't think it works that way. :=)

I've finally started to see some uptick in training paces. Granted it's only been 97 days since my first 30m continuous run. My long was 9mi today, and has been over an hour for the last three weeks. That coincides with the first noticeable signs of improved pace. I finally broke 9m / mi today at long-run pace.

That said, I'm sure I could be in better shape sooner by being a little more sane....and maybe take a day off. I'll take one (maybe two) in 11 days. :=)

I've signed up for another 5k next weekend. So, that will act as a good bookend for the 100/100, since I did one back on Turkey day. I'll be happy to break 24m. But, it's hard to let the legs freshen up and keep the pedal down on the 100/100.

I’ve added a 1000km goal too, I’m right on par with 900km.
I have to say this challenge really got me out of the coach a couple of times.. or more accurately several dozens of times đź‚. It’s been a great experience so far and seems to be quite good for my my running fitness.
I wonder how you manage the « after » challenge. When it’s over, not running for 1 or 2 days must feel weird, no? Do people feel guilty not running? Is there a detox plan? 🅠(half kidding, half serious question)

I 'curate' my own "Endless Summer 100/100" from Memorial Day to Labor Day

So my schedule is sort of like:

100/100
Spring races
100/100
Fall races

****

I was listening to an old episode of Road Dog Podcast last week, and the Luis referred to "road running" [specifically marathons, but I guess we could include HMs, 10Ks, 5Ks] as "street racing" and I said to myself 'Y'know? That sounds kinda badass!!! Punk Rock, if you will - I'm going to start incorporating that phrase/text into my own work'

Gen-X slacker here; 57 year old female. I’ve got two goals for running, Number one, keep running. Number two, don’t get injured. This challenge seemed like a great way to accomplish both. Maybe that’s a bit counterintuitive, but, because I had to run every day I had to be extremely conservative and careful about distance and speed. I also built injury prevention exercises into the routine, which I think had a big impact on my success— so far, don’t want to jinx anything with 5 days to go.

Wow. First time posting in here. I was unsure how well this challenge would go, but with only a few days left, I must say it went great. This was my first time doing this. Previously my longest run streak was 30 days. Now I’m almost at 100 days and time really flew by and I’m feeling as good as the day we started and that’s with still keeping a consistent bike, swim and strength program going. Congrats to everyone who participated and have a great upcoming season!! Thanks Slowtwitch for hosting the challenge also!

For bookendings sake....did another 5k today.

23:18 M54. 2nd place male masters. 9th OA.

I started out trading places with a guy who looked to be about my age, maybe a few years older. Eventually, I ended up about 10 yards back after the first mile. I'd hoped to stay in contact and maybe out kick him in the last 1/2mi or so. But, that was not to be. He steadily moved a little farther away. He took first in masters, ~30s in front. ..... Next time... Turns out he was 58.

Nevertheless, 1 min/mi improvement since Thanksgiving. Not quite back to ~19m pace from 18 months ago, but I'll take it.

Now back to doubles and triples to finish this 100/100 out strong.

That's amazing work, Tom! Well done!

With 4 days to go, there are a solid hundred people in reach of success. I hope that everyone has had similar improvements to Tom. I know I have, but I did no 5k race at the start to compare with.

Thanks. I'm trying to do my little heart logo justice.

It's all thanks to the 100/100. It's gets you out the door or onto the TM at times when you otherwise wouldn't.

I hadn't run in over a year before the start of this thing this year. I'd been having a lot of trouble with my ankle where the vein graft was taken for the bypass surgery.

But because my sister wanted to do a family turkey trot, in October I'd started a couch to 5k run/walk plan... And my first 25m continuous run was like 8 days before this thing kicked off. I really wasn't sure what to expect from the ankle.

I really do think that the format of the 100/100 and the way it encourages many small runs, and the way the every-damn-day nature forces you to slow down has had a lot to do with my ankle coming back around. In the last few weeks I've been able to start working some tempo and threshold work back into the schedule without any pain.

I hope everyone else has been able to see similar benefits.

I just today got caught up, 98 runs, after falling in a big hole in January when my back went out on me. I was thinking the same thing. The 2 mile runs allowed the frequency (2 a days) I needed and got me running again. I wasn't real keen when the minimum rule changed but I certainly benefited from it this challenge. And I too just started adding intensity with the 2 milers. It's working pretty well (knock on wood).

well, the finish is in sight and i'm still here. first time trying the challenge and i'm at day 98 without missing a single day (actually, it's day 100 because i started 2 days early!). getting them in every day has been challenging with travel and going to the mountains almost every weekend. at least the rental condo has a clubhouse with a treadmill, and i have ZWIFT with a treadmill at home to avoid risking a tragedy on ice during the colorado winter. it's been a great way to build my run fitness during the winter and i've seen some real improvement since nov15. in my ZWIFT runs i've clocked a 23min 5k and a 47min 10k. current totals at day 98 have me at 261.7miles, averaging 9.13 pace. far from my old pb, but i'll take it at age 72. now that i've gotten this far i'll probably just keep going.

Congrats! Is today the final day or tomorrow (22 Feb?).

I have been generally jogging 25-40 min most days and looked at the log and just passed my goal of 500km total. Looks like I will end up at 93 or 94 runs depending on tomorrow !!! I think I am running a bit better than at a start, but minimally the 500km ensured I have a starting point for tri season!

Hello slowtwitchers, first post here.
Finally the last day of 100/100, 2 runs short this year, not sure if I still have time to make it up to 100.
I joined last year but only got to about 50 runs, so quite an improvement this year.
Looking forward for the next one!

I fell while skiing 17 days ago and likely broke a couple ribs. Up until that point I was exactly on schedule to run the full 100. There have been multiple days off since then ….. shuffling through two miles while taking very shallow breaths was interesting. The challenge “forced” me to keep getting out the door and I think it was good for me to keep moving at whatever pace I could manage. The last two days I have finally turned a corner. Deep breaths are still uncomfortable and sneezing is pure agony, but somehow I have managed to run and even inject a little pace. I’m hopeful that in 7.5 weeks I will be healed up enough to run a respectable marathon.

Thanks for a fun challenge.

November & December were spotty, but January & February were solid, including a nearly month-long streak [currently on 18 days]

I'm going to totally rest for 2 days, and then begin an actual run training plan. I've reached a limit for the utility of "xx" 2 mile runs---yes, I know I'm not limited to 2 miles, by rule...but, I'm limited by current physical ability in the context of 3x runs per day.

I hoped for an epic last day and the weather did not disappoint; coldest run of the 100 (3 degrees F with windchill (-16 Celsius), also the windiest. Fresh snow, icy streets, watery gray sunlight, just a misery. And yet, a happy victory.

And... Thats a wrap for me. In 4 years of participation, I think this is my second making it to the end in one piece since 2019.

In October and November I'd averaged 15 mpw of run-walk. In the last 4 weeks I averaged 39 mpw for 155 total... All running. I lost 13 lbs, and my weekly average resting hr is down 12 bpm (to 58).

I'm calling that a success. Its good to be back!

As always... I love this challenge, it brings out the best in what ST is. I always love the virtual cameraderie, the mistressk photos, RandMart humor, the occasional dtoce sightings.... Where was slowman and Monty this year? Hmm.....

Time for a Bourbon! Cheers everyone.

I'm taking the next two days completely off. Let my calves rest, and everything else. Today was a bit of a slog. The weather was nice (warm, but nice).

After that, it's back into a 5k focused plan to try and improve a bit further before it gets too hot here for fast running. By mid-April fast race times are likely on hold until October.

Hopefully, I'll make a solid run (ha!) at a good 10k or three in the fall before we start this crazy cycle all over again. Heck, maybe I'll even do a sprint tri or something? Hmmm... I'd probably have to get wet for that.

Anyway, I hope everyone got what you wanted from this challenge...learned something about what you can truly accomplish, or met a new goal... Or something!

Congrats to Bluestacks for a perfect score, and madmike for what looks like just one short.

The 100/100 lined up nicely with my spring marathon build and was what I would have done anyway. I've stayed mostly healthy which has been a challenge over the past couple of years. Just had one 4 day period of no running in late December due to a hamstring strain. I've never been one to chase mileage or doubles and have almost always done my mileage in singles. There was one true double when I had to drop off a car for repairs and a few warm ups/cool downs for races. Ended at 97/100 which is just fine by me.

Plan is to continue to build to 85-90+ in singles before the Eugene Marathon.

Hope everyone feels fitter and faster than before and continues to enjoy the runs. Consistency is the single most important aspect of running fitness.

Same, I don't know why I never tried this before. I thought I needed a rest day. But now a short run is a recovery run and feels good. I feel stronger and more resilient for doing this.
I started this for the commitment, and it felt so good I'm going to keep going.
I'm not a triathlete any more, so easier to do, and very helpful in training for a 50 miler.

Congratulations everyone! and thank you!

This was my first time joining the challenge -- finished with 46 -- not great, but it's what I was able to do. I had a great streak going at the beginning, but once that broke I never found the consistency again.

I stayed true to my intention at the beginning though, which was to see how many runs I could get during the 100 day period without artificially inflating my total by doing unnecessary doubles and triples to "catch up". I think I had two or three days of double runs, where I ran a race in the morning and then jogged with the dogs later. So those 46 runs represent probably 43 or 44 days of running.

Already looking forward to trying again next year.

Congrats to everyone. This was my first year and had a great time forcing myself to run in the dark and cold (gave up my gym pass so no treadmill after December). I had a streak of over 30 days going at the start which includes IM Arizona, but then the baby came. Finished with 81 runs for over 5km average. I only did 3 doubles and no triples (double on last day only because I didn't count my runs correctly). I have a 5k race Saturday so looking forward to a couple days off before and after.

Looking forward to next year!

well it's done and documented-congrats to all who participated!!

getting out there and moving is good for the soul as well as the body and mind-and this challenge is a perfect way to execute a little time for yourself and your own health. The cardiology world pushes all people to achieve a total of 150 minutes weekly of aerobic exercise for the greater good and lower cardiac risk, so keep on moving

I was personally happy to achieve a silver medal-a first for me, after no medal in 2022 or 2020 with a bronze in 2021. Only the second time I've gotten that beautiful virtual award which only slowtwitchers can appreciate...maybe next year gold?!?

I love it when people chime in and make a comment or two here. It's so much better for those of us who ramble on in this thread to hear more virtual voices. Please keep letting us know you are there.

Props to Tom and kudos to the king-bluestacks, so glad you decided to join (and dominate!)
And wanted to congratulate anyone that was a first timer--this could be the start of something really good

see you all next year......................................................................................................

I signed up, couldn't be arsed to really go for it (weather being a great excuse), but ended up with 47 runs in 100 days, as per the training plan. I haven't had such good compliance in a long time. Finished well into the top 20% of participants in terms of distance run and time (even though I'm training for short course), but it's amazing that 110 people or so, out of the 600 who signed up, managed to tick off the 100. Chapeau bas! and thanks to Slowtwitch for the opportunity.

Didn't really go for it this year, but finished with my original goal of 101 - all runs outside, usually 1 double per week (to make up for Fridays off), all 5km+ and with a few snowshoe runs thrown in, though the one actual snowshoe race for which I'd registered turned into just a trail run due to lack of snow. Total was about 725km/450mi for the 100 days, which included 13 Fridays off (I did run one Friday around Christmas).

The final run was pretty nasty: a thick layer of sandy snow on the ground, and gusting winds blowing ice pellets and freezing rain in my face. I could have bailed on it since I already had 100 in the bank, but I've never been known for my good sense.

Speaking of which, I've managed all this while also trying to get back into playing hockey regularly again. There's a Sunday night stick & puck at a local rink (no scrimmages; it's basically to work on skills) that I've managed to hit up a couple of times, even after running 3 times from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon.

(That's me on the right, trying not to tear an adductor)

Stick & puck as a goalie is basically a series of penalty shots/breakaways, with multiple pucks on the ice - my husband did some filming and in a 1min clip I faced 13 shots, so multiply by 50mins and it's a LOT of work. Kona in July has nothing on goalie sweat levels, but it's been good for building resilience - similar to the 100 in 100!

Congrats to all who achieved their goals, or just tried something new!

I was off ST kind of due to biz travel and internet connectivity issues (when I could get on net, I had to prioritize company stuff) and not entirely sure when this was ending so I just kept going on 23 and 24 ! I ended something like 6 runs short of 100/100 but got to over 500km of jogging which was my original goal...early in the challenge I felt that I was straying from my original plan and veering towards the full 100/100 rather than just focusing on getting 500km in, but eventually I settled down and took the odd rest day (typically 1x per week due to swim focus, XC ski, or travel for work).

Sorry for not contributing much on the thread. I was largely a lurker in the thing, and as opposed as I was and still am to straying from the 30 minute minimum, I saw many days when it was valuable given my current state of running rehab.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Finished my 300 runs in 100 days one day late (on the 23rd). (Only 1 run on the first day of the challenge due to logistical problems.)

How well did it go?

Get back in shape after a long time out and put in my base miles: Great (pulse from low 60s to about 50, comfortable running about 30-60 s/mile faster than before, callouses where needed to avoid most blisters; the problems from starting again after a long time out got fixed after 20-25 days.)

Lose weight: somewhat (trying to get from low 160s down to 145 or less; only got into the low 150s). (And staying in zone 1 (to burn mainly fat) at my age is a little brain-numbing.)

Studying: Treadmill was a great way for me to avoid falling asleep while trying to study some fairly intense material.

Overall: My experiment to see how my body would respond was a qualified success. The first 60 days were quite effective, where I averaged about a half marathon over that time and 15 miles/day for days 31-60. But when I tried to add in biking after that I would always break down and have to back way off the mileage, so that wasn't as good. On the other hand, I found that I could recover and continue training if I allowed my pace to be dictated by whatever I was working through. (Caveat: n=1 here.)

As far as the "brick" idea I saw earlier in the thread:

I think it would be great if there was a monthly thread (think "fishies") where posters could put up their goals for overall training for the month and follow up on it like the fishies threads. (I'm thinking of dev's "Olympic distance per day" thread in June 2021.) I could see types of goals such as average per day or completing a particular tri distance a certain number of days, whatever each person wants to do. For those of us who have neither a training group nor a coach this would be awesome. (Since most of my posts are not replied to, I don't feel I should be the one starting the thread.)

I think I have to get on the Sprint tri per day program before the Olympic tri per day program....running is not there yet, but 5 km per day is what I averaged during 100/100 and the rest of sprint tri per day average for a month program is easily doable. Maybe by June an Olympic tri per day is in the cards again. Let's see. I never got to the "pure Olympic tri per day" in June 2021 because I had a vaccine in the middle and took several days off and had to play "catch up". That was tough.

I think a month long challenge where you are on your "output threshold" is doable. Almost like a personal tour de france equivalent (if you count life and training)....but its just a month. 100/100 at an age group scale while overlaying a swim-bike program on top (which is what I try to do) and adding life's stresses on top is like doing a Tour de France, cramming in an Olympic Games and showing up to the Vuelta and not burning out LOL.

14 weeks/1 Quarter is a long time to keep the pressure on. From the corporate world, we know that you can't have the throttle on for the entire quarter....there is a degree of pacing day to day, and making everything a habit

  • Believe what you think
  • Target what your believe
  • Do what you target
  • Repeat what you do
  • Do it again

Look back and it is a habit now, and you are the cumulation of your habits

Hopefully 100/100 makes running a habit and part of what the athletes are, not athletes who do running because they have to, rather they become people for whom running becomes an extension of their self/identity

Congrats to everyone and all the first-timers. I followed along on the thread as it went along. I don't remember this many success stories in the past few years that I have been around. It sounds like it was a really good year for the challenge. Bring on the nice weather!

Great work!!! It can be tough to keep going when the thread has sunk off the front page and you're on your own

As luck would have it, on this week's Road Dog Podcast, Luis spoke with a bunch of Run Streakers

https://roaddog.libsyn.com/...s-do-it-all-the-time

Quote:
“Ultimately, it’s just being able to go out and experience doing something that is healthy for your body and being able to have memories and stories. It’s not about the destination but the journey.”

Micky Cecil, Ursula Hall, Brad Guy, Ellen Adamo and Jerome Gist are running streakers. Running Streakers run one mile or more a day for consecutive days building up a run streak. Hear the group chat with Luis about what a run streak is, the groups they are a part of, where they like to run, how streaks end, proudest running accomplishment, reasons for starting a run streak, and reasons for ending one.

https://runeveryday.com/all_active_streaks.php

Brad Guy - 2,852 days
Ellen Adamo - 2,330
Ursula Hall - 2,316
Jerome Gist - 820
Micky Cecil - 104 [not on list as they have a 365-day threshold, bastards!!!]

As I've posted many times before, I do my own reboot between Memorial Day & Labor Day - it's just about 100 days

I've been doing 1 per day since the challenge ended. Mountainous 50k here in April (unfortunately I am under-trained), then I think I want to shoot for a half-marathon training plan and work on speed. I never really trainer for a half before and I think that might be a good idea for me. This year's goal is to repeat the sub 3 in November. My daughters promised to call me the two-time if I go sub 3 again this year. That is my #1 priority right now.

My standard run week is 6 days, anyway. In past years I have doubled 1-2x per week, but I haven't done that so far in 2023.

I've stopped doing all the 2mi "challenge runs", and am back to a typical BarryP style 50mpw plan.

Had to do some doubles and triples to catch up due to minor injuries and illness. Found triples to be more exhausting and hard on the body than just doing a 10-15 Km run in one sitting.

I get that the triples get the 100 run target up really quickly, found that they come with a price.

Way so stick with it!

You're not alone! I started late too, on Jan 1. I am currently on day 88 with 85 runs in.
