I second that motion. Not sure what I'm gonna do when my Softride finally wears out--based on Dan's series on Tri-bikes I'm guessing a Kestrel Airfoil but it aint gonna be as comfortable on my old bones and paratrooper back.

I agree...someone needs to take Softride back to profitability...the demographic is there...aging tri population with deep pockets who want to buy speed while maintaining comfort, all the while suffering from decreasing flexibility!

First, we need to convince people that they don't need a UCI-legal bike. Second, we need to convince the uci and the USCF that the beam bike allows injured people to compete. Third, we need to shout it from the rooftops that a beam bike is very, very beneficial for all aspects involved, including aerodynamics and injury rehab/prevention.

Yeah! Bring back Softride... so long as the quality stays high and they don't try to cut corners to save money. Cycling doesn't need tradition.... innovation trumps.

Seems to me there might be enough interest on ST to get the company going. You might want to see how many investors you can raise here.

Despite the big talk, triathletes are actually quite conservative in their bike choices and have largely been afraid to vere away from the traditional double diamond frame design. Radical designs like the Softride, Titanflex, Zipp 3001, BP Stealth, etc which proved themselves in the wind tunnels, still never got the following they deserve within the tri community.

I think the main reason why those bikes were not popular is money. These bikes were very, very expensive in their days. This is why the Hooker, the Lotus, and the Zipp were not very popular. Everyone lusted for one, but nobody could cough up the $$$. These bikes were also produced in the low thousands if not high hundreds. I think the Zipp would probably fetch $5-7K if they were new frames today, and the Lotus would cost closer to $7-10K. That would be the 2007 equivalent.

I think the most popular tri bikes in the heyday of the bikes I mentioned were the:

1) Scott Waimea

2) KHS aero turbo

3) anything made by QR

4) anything made by Trek (no, they didn't have a tri bike)

5) a few things made by Cannondale (they had a tri bike or two, but I saw mostly C'dale road bikes in the transition areas back then)

These bikes were well under $1500 complete (I think the KHS and Scott was around $799) with 105 and the occasional 600 mixed with 105, with the Treks being a bit higher. I am talking somewhere around '93-'97. These bikes would now fetch between $1200-1999.

Most of the Superbikes were gone by '99, with a couple hanging on a bit longer. I couldn't even get my hands on a Hooker when they were most "easily" obtained (and I had the cash), and I had to settle for a KHS. I did have a rebadged QR for a short while in the late '90s, as well. I could have bought a used-up Hooker, but knowing whom I would have bought it from, I was afraid of what the frame would be like after this pro had used it...

I admit that I scoffed at beam bikes in the early days. It was only after a cracked vertabrae that I got over my prejudices of beam bikes. But cost and availability were the most likely reasons why the superbikes languished with tri geeks. I do believe that one of the reasons why the UCI banned the superbikes were both cost and availability.

As long as the beam is intact on the traditional beams and you have plenty of front pivot bolts (I have a lifetime supply), you're golden on a traditional Softride. On the Rocket/FasTT, you had better buy as many new pivots, or you're screwed.

Consider a TitanFlex. Two different models. Try the one that you like best...you may be glad you did...especially if you have back issues. If you are using it for a TT bike, make sure you get a size with sufficient front-to-center distance. I love mine for longer TT rides/races, but for very hilly or for short TT's, I ride an aluminum double triangle, because the power requirements are so different. In a short/hilly ride, I tend to anchor myself to the saddle for more power...on a Softride or TitanFlex, I lose a bit of power as the suspension deflects a bit, most noticeable to me on seated uphills. Standing, cranking up a hill, the TitanFlex is far superior to the Softride in stiffness/efficiency. If you aren't powerful, or if you don't do short time trials, or if you spin up hills rather than drop your cadence a hair and slide back on the seat to climb, the TitanFlex might be near perfect. You can get a stiff boom, even wedge a rectangular aluminum bar in it to minimize side-to-side flex, and be happier with it than any Softride you've ever ridden, and as efficient on it as any DD frame. Plus, you get the better cornering traction of a suspension, compared to a DD frame.

I'm just saying, no Softride doesn't mean there isn't an excellent, even better, alternative out there right now.

I agree with Paulo....ST is only one part of the demographic. A product/service has to sell to the 99.99% majority of triathletes who have not heard of ST. I believe ST has 14,000 registered users...perhaps 5x with lurkers...the TAM has to be bigger than that as you'd only expect to capture a sliver of the TAM.

Alas, I have a rocket TT.
Good idea. I got it replaced 13 months ago due to a crash that bent the beam support and broke the beam.

I wish this would happen, I'm youngish (29) flexible and have no back problems and I still choose to ride a old softride powerwing 700.

Its the faster most comfortable best handling bike I've ridden. I might consider a Titanflex at some point if it fits me, but I'd need to ride it first to see if it has similar properties.

I trained and raced on a Softride for years when I was sponsored by them back in the early 90's. Had some of my best races ever on a Softride. However, that is the hardest part of owning a Softride - going back to a regular bike! ANYTHING seems harsh. Took me a while to get comfortable again on a classic double diammond bike after that.

It's a long story, but the short version is my sponsorship with Softride ended and that was the same year that a small bike company was started up by a friend of mine in Toronto. You may have heard of it - they called it Cervelo :)

So I got a Cervelo!

I've seen a pic of an all carbon new Softride. It's 1 kg lighter than the previous top model. I've also been emailed some information concerning the new bike. I need to email the person who sent me this info to see if its ok to post here.

So if it's ok with them I'll post pics and other info then.

If someone can explain how I go about getting the pics posted on the forum I'll do that when approval is acquired. I know I have to put the photo on

I highly doubt it is a new model. Softride made a few carbon bikes back in the day, but they had problems (I believe it was called the Powerwing) and hence they switched the aluminum bikes.

And being that Softride is no longer producing bikes, it seems improbable that it is a new design. Probably one of the older carbon models. I'd like to see it, however!

ahh...the mid 90's....where tri's consisted of many bikes you've never heard of, and then there were:

Softride,
Kestrel,
Zipp,
QR,
....and my trusty first tri bike the Scott Waimea (ala '96?).

I did a race in Florida in about '98/'99 (The Florida Challenge 1/2 IM, that I think is now something like a Claremont race) where I swear to ST that 70% of the bikes in transition were Softrides. Originally being from Chicago area, I had seen an occasional Softride for my first 4-5 years of racing, but not an complete transition area.

I did a USCF stage race in Bellingham (Softride HQ at the time) one weekend many years ago as a Cat 4. Coming into the crit on Sunday, I was in 2nd overall (on a Paul Barkley Softride -- Paul Barkley made many of the first generation frames marketed with the Softride name on them, but mine was branded with his decals), and the guy in 1st was riding a Power-V. You should have heard the announcer.

"Here comes XXX (sorry, don't remember the guy's name) on a Softride. Oh, and here's DT, ALSO on a Softride. What a bicycle!"

My team mates gave a full ration of crap about that...

OK, ask and yea shall receive. Below is some email conversions about this new frame.

“note just over 1.5kgs but will get to 1.2kgs
(1kg liter than top model Softy & 1.3kg than the classics)
once proper moulds made up also this frame has been beefed up
so it is extra strong for riders up to 100kgs “

“note the frame will debut @ Hawaii IM & be selling by end of year”

Not sure if Hawaii will be the debut. I’ve read that it’s already been raced by someone, not sure if
They qualified for Hawaii though.

“I rode the new Attack frame for the first time just 2 days pre half IM
19/8/07 as after having an amazing block of training in prep for Kona
where crazy 180km rides with almost 4000m of acsent & an hour
nippy run off the bike with jumpers , warm beany etc etc were on
the agenda Yeppoon half had now just become a solid hit out
but as my training bike was an old Softy classic beam set up usually
all 3 bottles full , spares etc it weighed a tonne + the beam was VERY
comfy so when initially feeling the new full carbon no moving parts
rigid beam frame I was nervous about how stiff it felt as my lumpty
bumpty stressed lower genital region was rather raw & inflamed
from 20 hour weeks in the saddle during July & early Aug #*!?$!!!

Hence with my very limited taper & tender legs a true test debut race
for the new Attack frame was @ risk as Hawaii bound race favourite pro
Cameron Watt with a firm 5th @ IM Australia had DNF'd into the bike leg .
I managed to deal with my flat spots during the entire race by sinking into
suttle IM paced efforts & with a few spurts here an there clocked a 4.30min
time nearly 8min ahead of 3rd placed Rocket Rod who takes no prisoners on
the bike leg while the winner doubled his 90sec leed over me on the bike to
take out the fastest run of the day , well until we meet again in Hawaii noting
on a rather cool windy sprinkly 20ish degree nasty sea chop central QLD day
Jimbo the Tassie demon & Kona team mate cruized home for tape homours .....

Using the 650c Hed tri-spoke rear without the revolutionary Gravity Zero hub
was a selection based on appearence & one I will never make again but I had
sent the wheel to engineer extraordinaire Kevin Hancett from www.gravity-zero.com.au
as it would of been my best option for Kona IM where discs aren't illegal due to
the hi-wind factor but big Kev was this time unable to weave his magic & install
his superior rear hub into the super aero full carbon Hed tri-spoke .
I know in my heart it set me back several minutes costing me a debut win on this
sweet Attack frame limited taper & tactical blunders aside & with the 20mm single
tyres also being a poor selection for what is the roughest road surface in any triathlon
in Australia , maybe bar the testing Maitland tri where the Softride is at its best !

The rear end which Graeme stiffened for track cycling was amazing , the
excelleration & power transfer to the back wheel was instant & with the 650c
wheel it felt @ times like a motor bike attemping a wheely !!!!!!!
Thanx so much Graeme for making the Attack frame prototype into a 650c
frame as I know it was a drama to convert all the tooling around from the 700c
sizing though I'm sure I will do you justice once riding into the lava feilds
of Kona & hopefully next year if a qualify again we may go with a 666c rear
wheel , 650c front & use your integrated aerobar fork front end to really take offf !

The absorption properties were not as releaving as the classic beam which I would
rate @ 6 out of 10 while the rocket beam is 4 the new attack beam is around 2 though
pre race I thought it was closer to a standard frame of 0.5 where the wheels , tyres
& saddle play a much higher role in the frames absorption characteristcs but once
pumped up with carbs , adrenaline & a race psychy while riding on the roughest
road in any tri down under the frame exposed itself & with the pair of Hed tri-spokes
running 20mm singles the frame had no where to hide while being loaded up !!!

Softride rocket beams tend to have a springy retention rate than the classic beam
which assists in stimulating a higher cadence . My pedalling action averaged
100 RPM ( the highest ever ) with 140 RPM max on the Attack beam during my
2.29min 90km bike split @ Yeppoon & the feel was so crisp as with only 50km
riding 2 days pre race the frame was nothing short of brilliant !
Riding with Kevin Hancett's gravity zero hub during the last 6000kms of my riding
has also evolved my pedal stroke into a more effecient torque range due to
smoothing out my power tranfer through the 12 & 6 o'clock dead spots with an
enhanced cadence & in combination with being forward on the saddle .

The best feature of a beam frame is the fact that 80 degree + seat angles can
be obtained with minimal jarring from road vibrations being absorpted by the
weight bearing muscles & spinal region via the seat post thus enhancing
synergististic muscle action , increasing power & especially for IM racing
minimizing dehydration & carb consumption . Both Softride classic & rocket
beams work in unism with the free wheeling gravity zero hub to maximize
rider performance to new heights & I have no doubt once I ride the Attack beam
frame with Kevin's rear hub history will be beckoning , STAY TUNED !?!”

(How does one adjust the beam height?)
It would be nicer with shorter head tube. I have to use an adjustable stem in full down position. I just got a 30deg stem that I'm gonna try--flipped, of course.

I don't think the beam height gets adjusted. It looks fixed to me. It looks like where the seat post attaches to the beam is where you get the height adjustment. I actually don't have any idea! Adjusting the beam itself seemed to be of concern for some of you. I for one never had a problem with the Rocket beam hardware or adjustment.

Remember this is a prototype. Seems that in some of the emails they spoke about an intergrated head/fork configuration? Like the newer Felt.

darn it, i loved my softride but that bike is hideous looking! Maybe it's just the paint or the contrast between the frame color and the couch. I think it's the paint and the softride logo which the picture resolution makes look almost photoshopped on.

That being said, can't wait to see if this bike is a real and if Softride is coming back. I'm also pretty curious about BB flex, or maybe we should say downtube flex on that bike. I'd imagine you'd need a pretty massive downtube to support torsinal loadings there without a seat tube and seat stays to help out a bit. Thinking that, along with the 650c wheel size might be the reasons for the epic height of the heade tube.

Hey, so what ever happened to that slack angles Total Eclipse all carbon bike that came out Germany a few years ago, looked a bit like this one, like a super modified Trek Y-foil. thinking maybe it was super heavy and just too slack maybe?

Just for refference, that frame looks pretty similar to the Y-foil. Probably a lot lighter though.

To me,it looks like an adjustable seat post on the SR. I thought those guys were knocking on Heaven's door, if you know what I mean. If it's priced right, it could be a world beater.

Sharrky, is the beam just part of the frame or are there two pieces that slide into one another at the carbon/red borderline...hard to tell from the pic. If it is one piece, then the fore-aft just comes from the rails on the saddle like a conventional bike?

Or does the saddle clamp slide on the beam? I'm wondering if this is really going into production and if it means Softride is back in business. In the USA or off-shore? So many questions...! :)

It looks nice but they are going to have to get good distribution and in lieu of the fact it's not UCI legal they are going to have to pay some big tri names to ride it to get the exposure it needs. A welcome change to see another bike out there. Is this genuine though ?

I'm wondering if the Graeme mentioned is Graeme Pearson? I met him in the early '90s and he had some pretty interesting carbon gear that he had made. I imagine there is a lot his stuff kicking around in NZ. Cool stuff and he's an awesome athlete.

Everyone get a grip. Everyone knows that Softride USA, is no longer making bikes. But that their bike division is for sale. This information that I've posted is from someone or a group of individuals who are negotiating with Softride about purchasing the bike division. They are from down under, Australia. It has been confirmed by someone at Softride that there is indeed a party from Australia in negotiations with the company.

I am not affiliated in any way to said party. I just own Softrides and I came accross this information when trying to find a FasTT frame. I got all the information for my search via Softrides website. I searched the globe trying to find any left over stock. During this search I came accross the party in question, who at the time said he/they were in negotiations with the Softride company. He mentioned some promising things about that purchase that have yet to come to fruition. Why is it taking so long? I have no clue. Cost? Lawyers? Contracts? I'm sure to purchase intelectual property along with stock is a pretty significant undertaking.

I asked if they would email me any information as they proceed. Seems that this party is making a prototype to see how well the bike will be recieved. Everyone on this forum has read about beam issues, beam adjustment issues, lack of understanding on how the rocket beams adjust, etc. Seems to me that this party is trying to address those issues as seen in the photo.

Below is a couple of pics of the protoype frame the 1st time I saw it. Please notice that is doesn't say Softride. Why the picture of the 1st bike posted has a Softride sticker on it I don't know.

So before everyone gets all excited about pre ordering, stating that it is a hoax, etc. Take it all as just information that might or might not be. Maybe the bike will show up in Kona, I don't know. But from what I've read that's where the party would like to have it's coming out party. Apperantly there has been at least 2 frames like this being raced somewhere. Maybe those folks from the other side of the globe and confirm it.

Apparently someone is trying to git r done, as the original thread creator has requested.

Enjoy

darn it, i loved my softride but that bike is hideous looking!

Agreed. I was never that warm to the bikes looks. The only time that it felt OK with me was when there was a group of us from Vancouver that were all sponsored by Softride back in the early 90's - Mark Bates, Frank Clarke, Rob Hasegawa, myself and a few others. It's was actually kinda cool when all of us went out for a ride together - all on Softrides.

IT IS A THING OF BEAUTY AND TRIATHLETES... you should realize how much the silly UCI rules are limiting the research and development of bicycles that would help our sport. Softride, Kestrel, TitanFlex, BP Stealth and others I am forgetting... I love everyone of you! Especially those still made in the USA.

Coolest looking frame since the Zipp 3001. If that comes to market, I'm buying one.

I still think that head tube is too long. But I like the looks of it. As long as it's got a decent front-center and a REALLY tight rear wheel to the BB, I'm sold.

That looks really thin on the stays. Do you know if they use unidirectional boron on to stiffen it up with stays that small? I suppose that a higher modulus CF would do similar if more was used. By the way, if anyone has a size large softride that is cracked (aluminium or carbon), I would be happy to give it a new home and life (I have some unidirectional prepeg boron, just itching to be used).

I have no idea. I've only seen the pics. If you read the email info that I posted, someone mentioned how stiff the rearend was.

"The rear end which Graeme stiffened for track cycling was amazing"

I would like to one in person though.

Are you asking about a frame or beam?

I don't know anything about this but the wheel on the frame shown above(hed cx with splatter paint job) was certainly Graeme's years ago, I remember him racing on it.
Graeme has made many an awesome carbon frame over the years, I used to look forward to looking at his bike at races, it was always incredible ...and changing.

If there is any truth in this it could be very interesting. Graeme is the real deal he's been making cool and radical frames as long as just about anyone. He also knows how to ride them he was/ is (?) a top level tri/duathlete.

It would be great if one of his designs could be mass produced, they're awesome!!

Yea, but they also said several other things as well that are silly marketing-like talk (such as the comment about knowing that with the other hubs that it would have given him several more minutes on the bike...thats just silly...now if he said that he was taking all the grease out of the hubs and lightly oiling brand new bearings with Krytec oil, I might put some merit in that statement).
