for all the talk that pro triathletes are irrelevant / don't matter / don't add anything, this thread sure does have a lot of pages discussing athletes swapping bike sponsors.
it's extremely short sighted to be saying I don't buy a bike because X is riding it. No, you don't directly, but each little bit adds up to brand awareness and brand image and
brand trust. you only have to look at the growth of canyon across everything from basic commuter bikes to the highest end tt machines. quite different from the numbers riding ventums, parlees or argons.
would i buy a speedmax just because frodeno won kona riding one? not directly, but that, along with the image created from him and all the other riders on their bikes has certainly shaped an image of them as a brand in my head and that effect trickles through to their entire bike range.
Trust is a big part of it. As a DTC brand, Canyon had to convince people that it made world class bikes and having Kona winners and ProTour teams using them was a big part of that. Giant needed to do the same (sponsor T-Mobile) to get people to consider a hi-end bike from a mass producer in Taiwan. Back in the '90s lots of "real" racers wouldn't consider a Cannondale until Cippolini/Saeco started winning races with them.
