I am shocked they would make a disc wheel when they have told us over and over that their non disc wheels are fastest.

I think what they said, was, that for your typical triathlete (and their riding speeds), their "regular" deep wheels were nearly as fast as a disc, and had other advantages (or didn't have the disadvantages of a disc). And therefore were a better choice as an all around race wheel for those athletes.

The argument has gone that most triathletes are pretty insecure when a disc wheel takes a surging cross-wind . . . so they slow down. The ENVE deep wheel is more stable in a stiff cross-wind than a full disc, so it is faster for the rider who is "insecure" in a stiff cross-wind.

Except cross winds don't really matter with a disc wheel

A bit off topic - In other pics, it was interesting that Cannondale was the only TT bike with disc brakes. A little surprising. I noticed that there's a nice mix of disc brake bikes on the regular stages.

For people interested in watching TOC and the Giro, check out Fubo.tv. It's pretty good so far.

Bingo. If anything a disc wheel in the rear makes a bike more stable. I ran a 303/disc setup one year that was seemingly immune to cross winds.

I wonder if they'll adopt Mavic's Road UST standard? They're both owned by the same holding company, no? It would be a sensible thing to do considering that adopting Road UST wouldn't preclude the use of other tires and, at the end of the day, it's more of a dimensional tolerance specification than anything else.

I could care less about ENVE and their wheel. After claiming triathletes don't need disc wheels, they won't get any money from me.

Interesting that they came out with a disc so soon after Specialized. I’m guessing both of these companies will stick a price tag of well over 2k on them. People will drink the marketing juice and buy them despite Flo, Hed, Renn, Aerocoach, etc all making discs just as fast (and perhaps faster) for a third the cost

Both they and Specialized can keep their wheels at that price. I will keep my money and train more or go get a bike fit or do any number of other things then pay that price for a disc that probably isn't that much better for a slow athlete like me than run of the mill disc wheels that have great sound. :) Or maybe buy a HED disc? Wait then I have a Zipp 808 front and then a HED Disc.....thats blasphemy....ok I'll stick with my 808's. :P

it's not but it's enough for me... I will buy a disc wheel again, dont get me wrong. Probably either Enve's or Roval 321 but will get a disc brake version. The 7.8 is fast enough for me that it will hold me over till I convert Road and TT bikes to disc versions... seems the market is going that way.

LOL

There are tons of other factors that can cause that instead of the wheels. Your "test" goes against all knowledge from wind tunnel studies and CFD. And 1W? Power meters are +/- 1.5% accurate. You have just become ENVE's target customer.

Wow check out those recommended tire pressures. maybe those numbers have been available before with their other wheels but 68psi for my weight (170lbs) on 23mm tires? That seems suspiciously low.

It's expensive but it's in line with Zipp and Roval.

I like the molded cutout. Zipp needs to add that soon.

Kona is arguably the top IM. Does Kona allow disc wheels? Give me the time you save in an IM by using a rear disc over the ENVE 7.8. Triathletes aiming for Kona certainly do not need disc wheels.

Uh...what?

Kona is arguably the top IM. YES, it is the IM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Does Kona allow disc wheels? No

Give me the time you save in an IM by using a rear disc over the ENVE 7.8. ???? So you'd rather use a non-disc in an IM? Why wouldn't you use the fastest wheel combination allowed? If you used a disk you wouldn't need anyone to give you the time lost with 7.8s

Triathletes aiming for Kona certainly do not need disc wheels. Certainly? Its a race. Again, why not use the faster wheel available? Especially when slots are decided by seconds.

So it’s 220 grams (~0.5 lb) heavier than the Roval with 0.5mm narrower inner diameter (18.5mm vs. 19).

The only reasons you buy this over the Roval is a) braking; b) looks; or c) to be matchy matchy with your 7.8 front

agreed... 220g savings matchy-matchy no longer required.. I'd sooner put roval stickers on my Enve front :)

Dunno, why are people smitten with any other company? They seem to put out reasonably-priced products with a dead-on focus on going fast. Chainrings, armpads for aero positioning, and now wheels.

I have their arm-pads. Thick, sturdy plastic far stiffer than the Bontragers I had on previously. No problems in the last few months... Their aero work convinced me, they're cheaper to obtain than FLO (in my country), so I ordered a set. Hope not to be disappointed.

I have personally seen 2 arm pads on different bikes owned by different people snapping. The problem with stiff plastic is that it will snap when impacted in the right area. From what I saw a few repeated bumps when down on the aerobars while riding rough roads was enough to do it. They may have fixed the issue now I guess.

Just read this on the Cycling News/Bike Radar article:
Quote:
However, when developing the wheel, ENVE found that the bead stiffness on a tubeless-compatible road tyre was putting enough pressure onto the rim that the wheel moved out of dish.

ENVE has eliminated this problem using a combination of 'laminate design and tooling offset', meaning that when the tyre is installed and inflated, the wheel moves into dish. Whether or not different tyre pressures could affect the wheel dish is unclear.

Surely that can't be as bad as it sounds?! What if I wanted to run a normal tyre (i.e. non-tubeless) that has a normal bead stiffness? Is it going to be completely out of dish?!

Either way, I can't afford one and nor am I fast enough to benefit from one apparently! :D
