Hi Jordan. Congrats on a great race.

Can you tell me a little about how you went about improving your run? What was your main focus? What types of run specific workouts do you do? How long, how many times/wk, longest run? When you do a brick, how long do you typically run and do you run at race pace or other? Do you ever do any run-emphasized bricks?

Thanks.

Jordan,

Congrats on the win(s) and a great season!

I read somewhere that you do quite a bit of training on a road bike. Do you use the same shoe/cleat(position) setup for riding road and TT?

thanks and have great wedding!

A follow-on question to Jaako's: Is there a pattern to when you ride a road bike vs TT? Certain kind of workouts, proximity to races, etc? And what are the benefits of going with the road bike so much versus the specificity of the TT bike? Maybe you've covered this in other threads and I missed it.

Congrats on a great race and great season!

Sorry for the delay. I ended up having to do more wedding planning stuff with Jill. Back on task now...

I used Trader Joe's citrus shampoo.

Depends on the week. And it depends on where I am in the training cycle. I.e., my run training in the weeks between Canada and Arizona was different than before Canada. I let my coach dictate most of it. Generally, a typical run week is about 50miles and about 6 runs per week. I won't get too much more specific than that, since it's my coach - not me - who makes those decisions.

Most every workout has a wattage target. Some are more strict than others. And some are targets for the whole workout, and some are for intervals. I don't ever ride like Eneko *apparently* rides - i.e. "very easy."

Run often. I do every run category out there - fartlek, base, tempo, build, etc. As per IM Canada thread, I will not share my training schedule. That's my coach's property, not mine. Generally, my suggestion is the same as for cycling. Use pace instead of wattage. Be focused in your workouts. If it's a hard workout, run hard. If it's easy, run easy. Have a schedule and stick to it. That is the key more than any specific type of workout. I'd also advocate a lot of race pace running. You need to be honest about your race pace, both in training and in racing. It also depends on your weaknesses. As the saying goes - train your weaknesses, race your strengths.

I think I rode it 6 or 8 times. But from the first ride, the only change I made was that my saddle was a bit too high, so it wasn't a big deal not to have a lot of time on it. It's the same position as I've ridden for several years, so the bike just needs to accommodate that position.

Yes, same shoes, so the cleat position is the same. Generally, the trend among all non-sprinters is to move the cleats back on the shoes. I run mine all the way back on my shoes, which is about 10cm from the front of the shoe.

Congrats on a great race and great season!

Type of workout. Basically, I consider how much time I will want to spend in the aerobars. Simply put, riding at anything less than IM race pace, IMO, is awful on a TT bike. So unless there is a key part of the ride that to be done at IM pace or faster, then I will ride the road bike.

For example:
2 hour ride at "base" effort - road bike
2 hour ride with a 20min TT - tt/tri bike

The benefit is comfort. I don't think there is a need to ride a tribike if you aren't in the aerobars. IMO, every moment you are not in the aerobars, you'd be better off on a road bike.

Did you target a specific wattage for the race, a range or go off feel?

Did you have plans to fall back or move up to other wattages based on how you felt?

I think I saw you post this on another forum, but you base your wattage off of other training rides. Can you elaborate on that without giving away your coaches IP?

SPECIALIZED V.S FELT. WHICH IS BETTER AND DON'T YOU DARE SAY FELT! PRO'S AND CONS OF EACH PLEASE!!!

You are asking me to split hairs on bikes that can - and do - win at the highest level.

Best common feature:
both have internal cable guides, which are really nice. Push the housing in, and it pops out the other side. Makes building a bike much easier.

Specialized thoughts:
- The brakes are a pain in the butt to set-up, but once set-up they work very well. There is an aerodynamic benefit, but they do require more work than just slapping on a typical pair of dual-pivot calipers.
- The bike is very stiff. I think it could be lighter and a bit less stiff. You do pay a price for the stiffness in terms of decreased vertical compliance. So it's a tradeoff. I don't know that the bike needs to be as stiff as it is. But you pedal and the bike goes. That is for sure.
- Handles better than the Felt. I really like the extra front center and longer trail. I find it is very stable, but also very maneuverable. I find I more easily pedal through corners and avoid potholes, bumps, etc.
- I HATE single bolt posts. I don't like "tapping" to make angular adjustments to saddle pitch.
- I Love BB30. It's a superior system. It's clearly an upgrade. Not unique to this bike, but it's still a positive
- Tighten bolts and they stay in place. The bike does not rattle or creak. It is very solid.
- This is THE steepest bike you can buy. You can run a saddle 8+cm in front of the BB. There is no other bike that you can get as steep as this one. That's not a necessity for me, but I was amazed at how steep you can get the bike.

Felt thoughts:
- I don't like that the bike is designed around a Shimano drivetrain. Yes, other parts work, but there can be a bit of hassle, such as when I wanted to use Zipp cranks and I had to use the "scissor" brake, which I don't think works very well. When I set the bike up with Shimano, it was very simple. But once I got parts from SRAM, I had to work around some things. You can see this even with some of the changes made between 7800 -> 7900. For instance, you need to replace the barrel adjuster on the 7900 rear brake. I think it was foolish to design a bike to work optimally with parts made by someone else.
- I prefer the two-bolt seatpost of the Felt.
- If you wrench yourself, the Bayonet is more of a hassle than a traditional front end. I got so that it wasn't issue, but you have to take care. I'd equate the Bayonet with the Transitions brakes - more work than "normal," but worth the hassle.
- Even at proper torque, I found the seatpost would slip a couple mm, even using the stainless steel clamp.
- Ditto for the bayonet. Loctite and grease are necessities if you own a Felt.

Summary:
If you ride the two bikes back to back, the Specialized is stiffer than the Felt. That's not a plus or a minus in my book. They are both stiff enough. But that's the difference you'll feel immediately.

Area where I think the Specialized is definitely better than the Felt - handling (more front-center and trail). Area where I think the Felt is definitely better than the Specialized - seatclamp is better (two bolts).

Notes:
I only ever rode a 2008 Felt DA. I know a lot of improvements were made with the new Bayonet on the 2009+ DAs.

Trail-and-error and learning to listen to my body. I used to cramp really badly during races - in ALL kinds of weather. I just kept taking more salt until I stopped.

- Not currently planning on racing in Europe. One of my big concerns is that I'm very strict about what I eat before the race, and I don't know, for example, how it'd be to try and eat gluten free in Germany. But I am sure I can sort that out, and I do hope to do the races someday. Just not 2010.

- Re: IMAZ, dependent on the rest of the season. Yes, I'd consider it even if I went to Kona, which is not currently a definite. I'd race with a 'stache. Maybe next year I'll raise money for prostate cancer and have the 'stache be a part of that.

- Re: PNF, I heard nothing of that. But I'm not so much in the loop on things, so don't take that for too much.

Congrats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And thanks for answering questions!

- zip ties
- Trek batcage custom modified. No.
- ~100cals of EFS, ~100cals of ClifShot Apple (for the caffeine), 3xSaltStick caps
- they are taped on with electrical tape so when I pull them off they are ready to eat
- in fuelbelt "vials" (though empty Airborne containers, for example, work well too)
- no, bike calories are similar, but run is a lot less
- basically just focused on power
- no agent
- I like the Transition, and would happily race it next year. But I am very excited to try the Shiv.
- They are waterproof, durable, and clear, so that I am sure I know what I've put in
- breakfast - Laughing Giraffe granola with goat milk kefir
lunch - 2 strips bacon + 3 eggs + 2 pieces rice toast
dinner - tamales, butternut squash, kale, and tuna+avocado sushi at Whole Foods with sparkling mineral water

It's coming to market soon. The differences are some improvements to some ingredients - new amino acids from Ajinimoto - and one new ingredient - Malic Acid. There are also now NO artificial sweeteners in any flavor, which I think is a huge change in terms of philosophy, but that's not a change for the grape.

Same training. I stayed in the aero position for most of IMC as well.

I use the Lunar shoes, which have a lot of cushioning. I think cushioning is always nice for IM. I don't think there is anything you can do to really soften that much concrete. My feet and legs were pounded, much moreso than in Canada.

Congrats on the race Jordan, I was cheering for you on the second out and back, for your last two laps but you were definately "in the zone"!
I dont know if you can share this, but do you frequently take a day off, or very easy day during a training week, or do you train 7 days per week?

Did you target a specific wattage for the race, a range or go off feel?

Did you have plans to fall back or move up to other wattages based on how you felt?

I think I saw you post this on another forum, but you base your wattage off of other training rides. Can you elaborate on that without giving away your coaches IP?

Lap one - wattage
Lap two & three - feel, since your priority is not crashing into people. You need to have your head up, so no looking at the computer. And you often have to slow down when you don't want to and speed up when you don't want to.

Having raced this course twice, I knew that was the only way to race it. You just can't race it any other way.

EVERYONE rides about 75% +/- (depending on speed) of FTP. You just need to know what your FTP is and you can pace an IM intelligently.

Yes, regularly. BUT, it's important to remember that I can precede or follow-up a very easy day with a very hard day. An age-group athlete can't necessarily choose to do 6 hours of training one day and then zero the next. I think there are definite differences about how you ought to structure training when it is someone's job versus structuring training AROUND someone's job.

Were you at your ideal race weight?
Do you put on pounds and then try to lean out leading up to a race?
Any near collisions on the bike? What are your thoughts on a 3 loop course?

Everyone is asking about the bike and the run - How was your swim compared to your expectations?

- yes. 155lbs +/- 2lbs is what I shoot for, though I currently seem to hit that weight with appropriate training and don't need to diet to get there.

- yes. Mostly because otherwise I'd get too skinny. So when I put on pounds, it's mostly because I know I will lose weight once I start with heavy training. I don't ever put on a lot of pounds. I never really weigh more than about 161 lbs - or 6 lbs more than what I target for racing.

- Two "close calls." The closest was from someone putting a bottle in a rear carrier, which is part of why I hate rear cages. It's very unstable. I do like the three loop course though. You see family and friends, which is really nice. It's a very different experience than one-loop Canada, but I do enjoy it. I wouldn't have raced it three times if I didn't like. There are challenges, but I do like it. I also like it because other races are nice enough to cheer for me, which is really awesome.

- Great. Best swim ever. It was a bummer to get dropped off the back of the pack in the last 800m or so, but at the same time, I came out of the water closer to the front than ever. If I'd stayed in the group, I would have been two minutes off the back, which is probably a bigger improvement than I think is reasonable in one year. As it was, I already improved over a minute relative to where I was last year, which is great.

I noticed that while you were on the run you seemed to be checking your watch an awful lot -- at one point it seemed you looked almost ever 4 or 5 strides or so. Are you checking pace, or what were you watching?

Lots of questions about power and pace for training.

In races and training do you where a HR belt as an additional number to see and weigh - or just pace/power + feel + demands of the day?

Zipp. I used an older 2008 1080 front, which is a different hub than on the 2009 wheels, such as the 808 I used in Canada. So I am not sure that the specific hub itself is really that important. At least provided it is a good hub with smooth rolling bearings. I once had a front wheel with really bad front bearings, and it was awful. ;)

lmao! Have to repost just in case you delete it!!

I think I rode it 6 or 8 times. But from the first ride, the only change I made was that my saddle was a bit too high, so it wasn't a big deal not to have a lot of time on it.

I must have missed the "critique my new transition..." thread ....

Your swim just keeps on improving year after year which is frankly amazing to me. Is this a function of continuing to refine technique, mixing up your approach to the workouts or just plain harder work in the pool?

To you see yourself reaching a plateau or do you feel there are still further gains to be made?

Were you super excited to get on the new ride (in T1 when they handed you your bike)? It looked like you were going to hop on right there before realizing you needed to run it to the mount line. Do you spend much time working on transition strategy or is it pretty routine now?

Fitness transfers. So more run fitness helps cycling (and swimming) and vice versa. I can't isolate it any more than that. Being more fit just means being more fit to me. If you are really strong in one but not the other, it means your training is off.

Hard work in the pool, which does include refining technique and mixing up workouts. They are not mutually exclusive. I think I can swim 48 (wetsuit) or 50 (non-wetsuit). I don't see a need to get any faster than that, so I don't plan on plateauing until I get there. I certainly won't *accept* any plateau unless it's at those speeds.

It's "Citrus" (I think it might technically be "Citrus Cooler") which they only make in "regular" Gatorade. It's sort of tangerine-esque. Or basically 50/50 lemon-lime and orange.

I'd say it was routine, but I do make some mistakes. T2 was a bit of a SNAFU on my part. And in T1, I was definitely going to mount before the line, and I also forgot to put rubber bands on my shoes. So I guess I need to go back and practice!

I am always ready for the next event. By the time the swim ends, I just want to stop swimming. By the time the bike is ending, I just want to get off my bike. And by the time the run ends, I just want to stop moving entirely.

- 5 hours total = 4.5 hours on the bike with 30min run off the bike.

- 20km/week. Common hard set: 2 x (5x200) on 3:10 (round 1), 3:00 (round 2) at steady (round 1), fast (round 2) pace

The thing is, I find that information relatively meaningless, because it doesn't say anything about effort, where it fits in the training cycle, what workouts preceded and followed it, etc. That's why I don't like really giving out workout info. You either have to be WAY more specific than I will be or it doesn't really say anything useful.

No, but I'd like to start doing some TTs. Road races are too risky.

Congrats again on your victory. You are having an amazing year.

If you go to Kona, do you think you can be "in the mix"?

The reason I ask is that I always thought it strange that when wagering on who would win Kona this year the responses were very very narrow. the majority of people seemed to slant towards Alexander or Macca or Lieto or a few others. In my mind fast is fast and 8:15 on any IM course puts you in contention.

Thanks for posting this thread, your responses are much appreciated.

Hey Jordan,

Congrats on a great back to back win ! Canada and Arizona :) What's next ?

Just found this thread after responding to another thread about your race day nutrition.

What is your dit and rest pattern like in the 2-3 days prior to the race please ?

I presume you have had a "sweat-test" to work out your sodium losses and optimum replacement. I am quite interested in the volume of sodium you replace per hour in IM events. How did you come to this conclusion and what advantages / disadvantages have you found going over and under this amount ?

Additionally , if you don't mind , your houghts on EFS products.

If you wish to get back into Canada , I reckon your gonna have to memorise the order of the Stanley Cup champions for the past 50 years ad the roster of the Habs vs Red Army 72 series, OR get that bacon quota up :)

Thanks in advance and congrats on a fantastic feat in achieving a course record , win and 2 IM wins in a row !

Congratulations! It was awesome to watch you race on line.

1. Do you use special needs bags on the run and bike and if so what is in them? If it is nutrition, what nutrition is it?
2. On the run pacing, do you aim to run the same pace the entire run? Or do you aim to go out slower a bit at the beginning? or what?
3. How does your long run training pace compare to your Ironman run pace?
4. Why the one piece tri suit for Iron distance when it seems most? pro's go with 2 piece?

Thanks!

The way that I generally race - more patient - I imagine that I'd not really "be in the mix" during the race. If I start to swim faster, then maybe. But otherwise, I still think I could have a good race, but I think it'd be more like Canada - folks riding away from me early on and then (hopefully) coming back later in the ride. Same with the run.

- Diet is the same as normal, though with some modifications from being on the road and not being able to make as much food, though I always get a suite with a kitchen in Tempe so I can still cook stuff. Make sure no gluten, "real" food, etc.

- Rest pattern - Thursday is an easy training day with swim, bike, run. Friday is off. Saturday is short swim, bike, run in short order with some short fast stuff. LOTS of sleep. Take naps. Etc.

- I haven't gone for lab testing. I figured it out myself through trial and error. The lab tests have been very positive for some athletes, but I know lots of other athletes for whom they have not worked. I don't necessarily believe that you ONLY need as much electrolytes as the lab says you sweat out. And even so, I'm not 100% sure that uses swatches placed around the body are really the best method. I.e., I think the lab testing is very good, but I don't think it's 100% reliable for all athletes.

- I really like the EFS line. For me personally, I wish the flavor was stronger. And I could use even more electrolytes - even in training I basically double the electrolytes in the drink. But the bars are awesome - gluten free AND taste good. The gels are very easy to take, even without water; I do my long runs with them and can take the gel even if I don't stop for water. And the drink mixes easily and tastes good in warm weather, but is maybe a bit too mild in cold weather, though still fine. Just in cold weather, really strong flavor is better, so I usually make mine 50% stronger since I drink less (sweat less) in cold weather anyway.

1. No. I have another EFS gel flask and another bottle with my EFS mixture. Nothing really "special." I look at it as special meaning "if something gets dropped that I didn't plan to drop" bag.

2. I know I will run faster the first half. It's almost inevitable. But I try to run close to the same pace. I did a relatively good job in Canada. In Arizona, I faded more than I wanted to or thought I would.

3. Faster, but not much faster

4. I don't like having the elastic band under my rib cage or across my waist. It irritates me. If Kiwami could make a two piece out of the Amphibian material, I might race in that. The Amphibian material dries so fast and is so light, that I really think it's an advantage. The suit I have just fits me perfectly and is really, really comfortable. It'd take something special for me to change.

Jordan,
Congratulations on the impressive win.

The fact that you, as a pro, are willing to discuss your life/training/etc. with everybody is really cool.
You don't see other professional athletes, either in triathlons or other sports, making the time, like you do, to be so close to their fans.
I think its great.

I noticed that you adhere to a gluten free diet.
Is it due to your body being intolerant of gluten or is it a choice to stick to a gluten-free diet for personal/professional reasons?
If it is by choice, what benefits do you see from being gluten free?

I noticed that you adhere to a gluten free diet.
Is it due to your body being intolerant of gluten or is it a choice to stick to a gluten-free diet for personal/professional reasons?
If it is by choice, what benefits do you see from being gluten free?

I am not celiac, but I do think my body is intolerant of gluten. It seems to be magnified - as most things are - during hard training. I feel better, I've gotten leaner, I don't have to #2 every time I run more than 30min, and "I" smell better (or not as bad). I also seem to have better connection through my core.

Simply put, I just feel better.

Well done Jordan, 2 for 2!

One word on pressure. Until Canada included, you were a potential winner. At Az, you were the outright favorite. That race was one of your A race for 2009...and a week later, you are getting married. You know if you do not deliver, you are going to cause some disappointment...and nowhere to hide.
You probably felt in a position you've never been before. (triathlon wise).
Question: how did you handle the pressure? Where you able to sleep well? Did you double doubt yourself?

Thanks!

It ws nice to be able to focus a week ahead at times. The last three weeks flew by. All of sudden, the race was here. I'm not sure it's ideal to have as much going on as I did in the time before the race, but it also kept me from being overwhelmed. Jill was very good in pointing out that I set out this year to win *an* Ironman, and I had already done that. I'd achieved what I'd said at the beginning of the year that I wanted to achieve at Canada. So no matter what, the year would be a great year. And I tried to keep that at the front of my mind. I also knew that I could win, which also gave me a lot of confidence. There's a difference between thinking you can win and knowing that you have done it before. So with all that, I got a great night of sleep before the race. Regardless of what happened, I knew in a week I'd be very happy.

1. No idea really. Maybe 10% faster? But that's pretty much pulled out of my ass...

2. They sweep the roads before. But I don't use paper thin tires either. The Zipp tires are a good all around tire. I mean, it's not Paris-Roubaix out there. I think a good "all around" race tire is going to be fine on most courses. Zipp, Vittoria, Specialized, Bontrager, Michelin, etc.

a few question for you mister Rapp

1. How bad/good was it to ride the 1080 on sunday? any scary part with it? why not use it at imc? only 100gram more....

2. Paulo told me that finally, all the work you have done in training camp of september 06 in Las cruces is paying off...you care to comment?

I have some dumb questions:

1. Why did you rack your bike by the brake levers? (it looked like a fair amount of the pros did this; I thought USAT rule was by the seat only??)

2. What kind of warm-up did you do for the swim (both before getting in the water and while in the water)?

3. Do the motorbike fumes ever bother you on the run, as they are only a few feet in front of you?

4. Do you feel that you run better after a flatter (AZ) bike course vs. a hilly (Can)? Though your run times are essentially the same, if AZ leads to a faster/easier run, did you back off when you knew you had a solid lead?

5. What was your cadence on the bike?

Congrats on the win!

1. It was much windier at Canada. And much more of a crosswind than is typical in AZ. I rode it a couple of times in practice, and it was very difficult to control.

2. Yes, I've just been tapering since then...

Actually I think it is more like your work rowing at Princeton is finally paying off and you've been taper since doing wussy triathlon workouts. All that base and high end full throttle work just had to be converted to a bit of tri specificity, cause we all know that the real studs are rowers (which is why you were probably trying to gain weight "'back in the day")

First of all, congratultions on your 2nd Ironman title in the same year. That is a remarkable accomplishment.

However, I am curious about your color/fashion sense and what kind of impact it had on your race: You rode a red bike and wore a red race outfit. What effect did wearing red have on your overall race performance: like how many minutes faster are you wearing red than wearing another color like blue or green? If you had done the swim in a red wetsuit, do you think you would have had a faster swim split? Also, are you the superstitious type and will you continue to wear predominantly red race attire? If you were to change things up and wear a different color at your next race and then not have such a great performance do you see yourself regretting that choice and wishing you had stuck with the red attire?

5. What was your cadence on the bike?

Congrats on the win!

1. My seat height is too tall for the racks. If I try to rack it by the seat, both wheels hit the ground and the saddle still is on above the rack. So, yes, USAT tells me to rack it by the seat, and I show them I can't.

2. Nothing before starting the swim. I get in as soon as I can and then just swim easy. I do a couple sets of 10-15 hard strokes.

3. The motorbikes don't ever sit a few feet in front. If they are ever that close, they are off to one side. There are occasional moments when they get close (like if they change from side to front), but if/when that happens, it is only for a few seconds. When they are actually taping from the front, they are usually at least 25m ahead.

4. AZ run course is harder, and AZ may be flatter, but it's not "easier" because there is a lot of stop/start with all of the passing that I think actually taxes the run.

5. 80-something. This course is not great for referencing power and/or cadence, because it's quite erratic after the first lap.

Lime green is actually my current favorite color. But that wasn't an option. I am sure that lime green is faster than red. But fortunately no one else wore lime green. But I will stick with the red suit, because it's actually mandatory for Specialized athletes.

Two tubes of Mastik'One. Three coats on the rim, two coats on the tire.

Unzipped on the run. Zipped on the bike.

Not sure if this has been asked yet, but if you don't mind me asking...what was your average wattage for the ride and then what is your current ftp would you say? I guess I can just take the first number and use the 75% you say most everyone rides for IM.

Also, how much down time will you take now before you start getting back at it for 2010?

Last...what is your height? 6'0"?

Thanks and congrats on getting er done.

Are you concerned with the evolution of the IM bike leg where races with strong fields can/do have big groups riding legally and getting a draft advantage seemingly reducing the advantage of stronger cyclists?

It happened in Kona and after the debacle in Clearwater we will start to see more of this at the IM distance, especially where there are strong fields.

1) No, I don't practice.

2) I did a few times the week after IMC, but not since then. And before IMC, I probably did about 3x in total.

3) Have you ever eaten way too much? No imagine trying to do situps. That would be the extreme example of disconnection. So what I'm talking about is the opposite.

This ride is not a great ride to evaluate wattage. Each loop is VERY different. And each lap the variance increases as you pass and more people. Only the first lap do I ride the way I'd normally pace an Ironman. After that you have to stop, start, pass, slow, etc. So only the first lap is really a fair evaluation of how I'd ride, and that was similar to IMC - ~270w.

I'll take one week off totally. And then will start up formal training again about the beginning January. I will start doing *some* training next week.

Depends on the course. I doubt you'd ever find me on the course in IMFL. And I think we may see some changes with IM's new Pro Membership policy.

And I think Chris Lieto showed this year that strong cyclists can still do well in Kona.

I don't worry about it, because there's nothing I can do by worrying.

Jordan,

Thanks very much for your detailed response.

Have you eve considered racing in any of the "hotter" IM events , such as Malaysia or China ?

If so what do you think your electrolyte supplementation would look like ?

Will you be racing Kona 2010 ?

Thanks,

I think it would be pretty close to what I do now. I did the same protocol for IMAZ in Apr 2008 when it peaked at 97F, which was about as hot as I can imagine it being. I don't really have much desire to do China, where it can be so hot you don't really seem to be able to *race.*

Thanks for that Jordan :)

Interested to hear your remarks on PKKC's question.
I was discussing gluten-free diets ( or lifestyle eating may be a better term ) with a friend of mine who has qualified for Kona each time he has tried ( 08/09 ) and he told me his coach advised him that many pro's like yourself , follow this "general" eating lifestyle.
We both live in South East Asia where rice is of course a staple . so that would be difficult and inconvenient to replace. Being disciplined in eating is something most of us have practiced for many years , but cutting out wholemeal bread , oatmeal , etc. that would really leave me at a loss for replacements.

As far as "racing" events like China and Malaysia , it is certainly difficult to keep your heart rate low , when you are running in 35-40C with high humidity.
I have participated in IM Malaysia in 07 and 08 and although I live in the region , it is an absolute test in heat management and correct electrolyte / nutrition replacement , because if you are not 100% dialed in , you will find out very quickly.

Thanks again !

Actually, living in Asia, I think I know why you might have. Many rice crackers are made using "glutinous rice." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glutinous_rice But the key is that it is glutInous rice, as in "glue like." I.e., it is made from sticky rice (suhi rice). This is not the same glutEn.

I don't eat oats, but mostly because I don't really like them. I would say maybe try eliminating gluten for two weeks, but keep your oats. Then try two weeks where you also eliminate oats and see if you feel a difference.

I don't run a lot of technical trails in season, but I love to otherwise. I do the vast majority of my runs on dirt, though, just more of what I'd consider to be "paths" rather than trails. I.e., I run on dirt roads or smooth trails, rather than something like a MTB trail. So if your question pertains to running surface only, then yes I run almost exclusively on trails. But if you are talking about terrain/topography, then I run trails in the off-season or when I'm building back into training (i.e., when speed does not matter).

You are very welcome.

The benefit is comfort. I don't think there is a need to ride a tribike if you aren't in the aerobars. IMO, every moment you are not in the aerobars, you'd be better off on a road bike.

Very good point here.

I have to say that after your lecture at IMC this year decided to make the switch from Soy milk to almond milk and I like it much better. The unsweetened one from Blue diamond is great. I don't get the Panda Puffs though. They are truly horrible ;)

- Is the Almond Breeze the unsweetened kind? Good stuff. I think it was two-for-one last week and my husband came home with three crates of it.

- With your special dietary requirements, do you find that shopping in Canada is a challenge? Is there anything you *need* but absolutely can't find in Canada? You're fortunate that Penticton is served by such a great natural foods store, but it seems that we are lacking the selection and prices that one finds south of the border.

Congratulations on a great race. It was fun watching you run down Lakeshore Drive in August and even better to hear that you're 2 for 2 this year.

You're fortunate that Penticton is served by such a great natural foods store, but it seems that we are lacking the selection and prices that one finds south of the border.

Congratulations on a great race. It was fun watching you run down Lakeshore Drive in August and even better to hear that you're 2 for 2 this year.

I haven't had any trouble. Prices are higher, for sure, but we balance it out between Save-On & Whole Foods (the Penticton one). If you live in western BC, then you have Thrifty's, which is really good. And Planet Organic, which is expensive, but which has everything. Almond Butter is the one thing that is about 3x as much without fail. Organic meat is also a lot more. Those are the two things that really hit my $.

It's definitely easier with Whole Foods and Trader Joe's in the US, but I never really struggled to buy what I wanted/needed.

I think you said you eat this way year round, yes?

Ever consume caffeine? why/not?
Likewise, anything containing or made from cow milk? w/n?

Were these changes you made to your menu in recent years? Simply a lifelong preference?

Thanks.
Love your work.

Pretty much year 'round. I'm more relaxed the week after an Ironman, and more strict in the month before one.

I consume caffeine before a race, and that's about it. I'm not opposed to having an macchiatto with friends on occasion, but I'd say I probably take caffeine (besides races) less than once per month.

I usually do goat's milk, and if not that, raw milk, but I will have regular organic cheese or yogurt without worrying about it. But still trying to minimize (eliminate) lactose, as the bacteria in both yogurt and cheese process the lactose as part of making yogurt and cheese. Besides those things, I don't really have any dairy. I like a scoop of ice cream or a milkshake after a race, but I don't have it regularly. I don't really have a problem with dairy, but it's a relatively common digestive irritant, and I don't really see any *benefit* from it. So at worst, it's bad for you, and at best, it's not beneficial.

I've never been big on caffeine, but I used to drink a LOT of milk. I noticed my skin became a lot clearer once I stopped. I would just say I feel much better the way I eat now. I also used to eat a lot of bread, pasta, etc. Always high quality stuff, but still, once I cut out the gluten, I felt much better. I would say the past year, really starting before Wildflower, was when I made the biggest change and committed to being gluten free. I cut down on all non-yogurt/non-cheese dairy about two years ago. And about 6 months ago I switched to eating basically all goat milk products.

When you get married how about applying for Canadian Citizenship!

You know how great it is up here.

I'm actually already a landed immigrant (long story), so that's really all I need. It's good for Jill (and for when we eventually have kids) for me to stay an American.

I don't have a hard & fast rule (pun intended), but generally it seems to just happen about 4-5 days before a race. Lots to do, I get stressed, try to get to sleep early, sleep a lot, etc.

fine <headstand on couch> "Mork calling Orson, come in Orson." What would you say would have been the most generous actions to take by the officials concerning the guy being dairy queened from IMAZ? and would that be your opinion of what it should be like for any IM event? I mean, there's the card way of looking at it which would give the guy the right to continue with a warning and he would've definately known the rules with a card and I'd have to guess he woulda put his shirt right back on or there's the 'rules are rules, too bad, soo sad' but without the handbook for dummies way of looking at it which is kind of an oxymoron in itself if you were to, as I do, look a the IM event as people helping each other and I don't mean by drafting as that's no fun but I mean working towards a serious goal and having volunteers and yadda yadda yadda, you know.

Do you have a feel yet for which bike is faster (as in Watts / mph)? I would think after enough rides on the same routes, you'd be able to establish quantitatively which is faster.

Nike Lunar Mariah. Roomier toebox than the LunarRacer, but still with the Lunar sole, which I think is great for running on very tired legs.

Can you give a more in-depth compare/contrast of the Lunaracer vs the Lunar Mariah? Cushioning, weight, durability, etc...

And, which ones did you wear (PR or TZ)? Or, are they the same?

Where did you actually find them for sale? (A quick Google doesn't turn up much.)

Thanks.

I think that maybe when you see that you are the ONLY person on the course without a shirt, that might be a sign that you are not doing something right. I wonder if they'd have DQ'ed him if he had picked up a shirt, for example, after the first lap? I didn't read through the whole thread, so apologies if this was covered. I'm also surprised that nobody said something to him before the finish line. I *thought* it was pretty widespread knowledge that you had to wear a top on the run, so you'd think that some other athlete, volunteer, or official would have said something to him before he actually got into the chute.

I support the decision. I think that every time there is an exception made to the rules, it undercuts the total system of rules. The "broken window theory." I do think the "must wear a shirt" rule is a good one. I think WTC ought to adopt the no exposed torsos, back zip rule, at least for pros, and really for everyone. Ultimately, I'm a believer in personal accountability. The rules were there. The guy didn't read them. DQ him. Rules ARE rules. This was a big discussion in the pro meeting - about drafting rules, where Jimmy said maybe it's a gray zone where you are like 1" into the draft zone. And we all said, "we don't want a gray zone. 1" is drafting." So I think I'm biased because of having rules impact me that way. So I think of the rules from the pro perspective.

I really do think it's sad that no one out there took the time to give the guy a heads up. With three loops on the run, it'd have been easy for him to retrieve a shirt. Someone should have stopped him at some point on the run and made him get a shirt. I like to think if I'd seen the guy I'd have said something to him. I think everyone who did see the guy who knew he was breaking a rule that could get him DQ'ed should feel bad if they did not tell him.

Congrats on your success. Lots more to come I am sure.

High caloric density is the main reason. I need X calories to do a long workout with bonking. I also prefer at least some of those calories to be fat, because it lasts a long time. I also like fat as a fuel because 9cal/g vs. 4cal/g (for CHO and Protein) means I need to eat less total volume of food. I hate exercising with that "full belly" feeling. So if I compare, for example, how many pieces of pancakes (for example) I'd need to eat to get the same strict number of calories as in two pieces of bacon and two eggs, and I look at the volume that will take up in my gut, that's where bacon really becomes appealing.

I also think you need to be careful about saying "bad fat." For a long time, margarine was *supposedly* better than butter, because it was 100% unsaturated. But it's not REAL food. I'm not saying animal fat is good for you. But bacon fat is real and very basic. There is NO processing done to the bacon I eat other than some sea salt rub. So in that sense, I think of it as being a very "primal" food. I also eat only about two pieces a day. And I eat a lot of unsaturated fats as well - fish oils, nut oils, etc. So I think I have a pretty good lipid profile in my diet.

But I started eating bacon simply because I found when I did, I never bonked during really long workouts or long training days (days where I might not have one long workout, but where I have many workouts).

And has anything like that ever happened to you?

Best case scenario, they see him coming into the chute and someone stops him before he gets too far and gives him a shirt.

Depends on what you are asking. I've had volunteers give me misinformation - steer me down the wrong road - or not be where they were supposed to be, etc. But they are VOLUNTEERS. I think every pro I know has had that. But you don't get anything for that. It's your responsibility to know the course. So, yes, I've had volunteers tell me something that wasn't actually so, like what happened to this guy, and suffered as a result.

If you are asking have I ever received a stupid penalty, the answer is, fortunately, not YET. But I'm certainly fallible.

As I said before, I think the real tragedy is that in 26.2 miles, NOBODY gave this guy a heads up (at least as far as I can tell from what I read of the thread).

Do you have a feel yet for which bike is faster (as in Watts / mph)? I would think after enough rides on the same routes, you'd be able to establish quantitatively which is faster.

Unfortunately, I have yet to ride them on ANY of the same routes, except for the IMAZ course. My thinking is that if the frames were equivalently aerodynamic, the Specialized would be faster because the front brake will have lower drag by quite a bit vs. the RED front brake I had on the Felt. If I put the same brake on the frames (which is doable with some tinkering), I think that'd be a big factor.

According to the windtunnel data, the Transition is a bit faster, but I don't know what brake was on the Felt for those tests and if the delta between the frames is approximately what you expect from the brakes alone.

I think it's really the front end geometry - and maybe the stiffness, though I think stiffness is a bit overrated for people not named Fabian - that I think makes the Transition a nicer bike for me, given that I ride a relatively small frame given how tall I am. That's really the difference that I notice the most when I ride - the handling is better given my position on the bike.

If I had it to do over again, I think I'd wear the Lunar Racer. I'm hoping the new Lunar Racer 2.0 might be a better solution. The sole is identical. But I definitely feel like I noticed the extra weight of the Mariahs. Of course, I think Arizona is a harder course than Canada, so who knows. I will do some more races - maybe just some running races - and workouts in the mariahs to see. The upper seems less durable, mostly because it's a more traditional upper. The Flywire upper really had nothing to break down, which is also part of why it was so hard on your feet. The Mariahs were DEFINITELY easier on my feet (way fewer blisters than ever before), but I don't know if the extra weight was worth it. I also think they won't last nearly as long, as the upper is already coming unglued in spots.

PR = Press Release (I think). TZ = Tier Zero (I know). They are the same. It's just a matter of where the shoe was sent. So PR is what you'd see in photos, because it's what the press gets. TZ is what the Tier Zero (top level) retailers get. At least, that's my understanding.

I bought them off eBay, though I know NikeTown in NYC has them.

I also have some yogurt with walnuts most every night for desert. Did I leave that off? I might have. Hard to actually think of what you eat sometimes.

Lots of questions about power and pace for training.

In races and training do you where a HR belt as an additional number to see and weigh - or just pace/power + feel + demands of the day?

never use hr. perceived exertion to supplement power & bike in training.

Do you not use HR at all? Do you just use power and pacing(run). If so why not? Congrats again..

No HR. I just don't think it's reliably repeatable.

I actually do use HR for one thing - I take my RHR in the morning. If it's way out of whack (inconsistent, jumps around a lot, 8+ beats too high, etc.), then I have a talk with my coach about the training and check to see if I've eaten something unusual the night before or something else that might cause that. When things are going well, it's within 1 beat (+/-) of a 41 (and usually right on that). Even sometimes when I'm dead tired, and I'm sure it should be higher, I take it, and it's right on. And usually those are the days where starting a workout stinks, but I feel fine once I get warmed-up.

FWIW, I did see that guy not too far from the finish. At that point in the race, my brains was just hardly capable of figuring out how many miles left. I do remember telling myself that there was something different about him...I was not sure what. Maybe most of us (non pros) on the run were in this stage: uncapable of thinking further than immediate contingencies.

Thanks for the info.

I'm also anxiously awaiting the new Lunaracers. My only complaint about the originals is that the sole isn't real durable where I tend to wear. But, from the looks of the new version, they added carbon rubber to the "lugs" in question. So, that should be an improvement.

It sounds like the Mariah are a little heavier, a little less durable upper, but a little more comfortable/forgiving upper. Since I don't have issues with the Lunaracer upper, I guess there's really no reason to even pursue the Mariah. That's good, since they don't seem particularly easy to find.

How often do you swim in open water? And what kind of workout do you do out there? Just long steady swims, stop-go intervals, pace changing, etc?

I read in another thread that you don't change your daily nutrition in the days leading up to a big race. I wonder if your normal diet has much fiber in it? And if so, do you have any problems with that on race day?

Nice job. You have now won the last two IMs I've been in. You should put me on retainer. :)

In the summer, when I'm in Penticton, at least once and often twice per week. But I hadn't done an open water swim since mid-September.

I do a mix - long steady, stop-go, pace change, and easy. The nice thing in Penticton is that the lake is marked about every 75m with a big buoy that makes it easy to do workouts with a lot of variety. The lake is about 1000m wide, which is great for long stuff. And then there are the 75s for short stuff. I find it much harder to do workouts that structured in the ocean, which is why I don't swim much open water in California.

The Vega shake I have in the morning has a lot of fiber, so I don't drink one of those in the AM before a race. But I do have it on Saturday morning. But after Saturday AM, I do try to avoid having a lot of fiber at lunch and dinner the day before.

No, engineer. I can't recall where I've heard of it. I would guess that it was when I watched the PBS special on Fermat's Last Theorem, since that was solved by a Princeton professor. And since the Riemann hypothesis is part of the group of unproven hypotheses//theorems that Fermat's used to be a part of, I would think that is the most likely place. But it easily could have been in any one of my other nerd-ventures. There were many.

Congratulations on the win. Awhile back I made a prediction on your finish time- post #119 here: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/..._reply;so=ASC;mh=25;
I based the prediction on your IMC time after some fudging for differences in average finish times of top athletes on the two courses. I thought you could go 8:12 and was only off by 95 seconds (0.3%). In my defense, I thought you would be running in compression socks...
My question is one that was asked previously (by meganruns)- do you notice a difference in recovery when you relax your diet after an IM? Specifically, are there foods you still try to avoid?
Congratulations again and enjoy the wedding/honeymoon.

Awesome race, Jordan. For a bit there, I thought the motorcycle following you on the run was gonna take you or himself out with all those narrow paths to wind around.

I was just wondering what you put your Salt Stick tablets in for both the bike and the run, particularly the run. Grampa's old coin purse, your favorite Tic Tac case? Did it work/did it keep 'em dry?

Thanks!

This is a position question:

Your old position profiled on the front page of slowtwitch a few years ago had you at 0 set back and your profile shows -3 with a higher bar position. The seat height I get given the switch to 172.5's but why back and up? More power or puts you in a better position when you slide forward?

Thanks

If you move to shorter cranks you need to move you seat up and back to maintain the same pedal position (at the bottom of your stroke and in the 3 position).

Mazel Tov on yet another victory. A few questions for you:

1. Realizing your training changes throughout the year depending what you have done before and what period you are in, about how many miles and hours do you bike a week?

2. What does your taper look like? How many weeks do you taper? What percentage drop off do you for each sport 3 weeks out, 2 weeks out, 1 week out, etc. More intensity during taper or same intensity (race pace, faster, slower)?

3. You are looking very clean in your race photos. Shave or wax?

1. Did you wear the garmin the whole race? Have you had any waterproof issues or signal issues in training or race? I love my polar but am looking for a watch that has an idiot proof pace window for racing.

2. Thanks for the bacon research. I'll quit dissing it.

I use a fuel belt vial (it's basically just a pop-top container, same as what the M&M minis come in). You can also use an old Airborne (or similar) style container. There are lots of things that come in those little tubes right now. Yes, it keeps them dry. Tic-Tac case is too small of an opening.

It's actually the same. 3mm behind the BB is not very much, and I think it's just that I probably rounded or was (gasp) less precise in my measuring.

I have raised my bars since a while ago. I raised them 8mm, but then went to shorter cranks, and raised my seat (without raising my bars), so it should now be 5mm higher than it was.

Fish oil (Nordic Naturals, which is bottled, not capsules)
I also eat yogurt every day, but if I am traveling, I will often take probiotics instead of eating yogurt. So I would say I take in some form of active cultures every day.

Three times. All just head colds. Once at the very beginning of the year after a lot of travel. Once after Wildflower (and a lot of travel). And once two weeks out from Ironman Canada, the day after I finished my last hard training session (of course). Lasted about 3-5days before I was 100%.

On my road bike, I did find this to be the case. I did it on my tribike, but I actually did not like it. I think it's important relative to where you apply peak power, which is later in the pedal stroke on a tribike. That being said, I may just sit 3mm further back on the saddle, which is hard to notice. One change I did make this year was going from having my tri saddle pitched down 0.5deg to having it pitched up 0.1deg, which would likely shift me back. I just felt like it put less weight up front and made me more stable. Downward tilted saddles are really a bad idea, IMO. I used to think a little bit was okay, but now I don't think ANY downward pitch is good.

1. 200ish

2. For IMAZ, 10 days (but it's different for every race, depending on the training before, how I feel, etc.). A LOT depends on how I feel. Similar training, just shorter. It's not a definitive percentage (at least not as far as I can tell). My coach writes the taper schedule, and I follow it, though we will make more adjustments based of how I feel than during regular training time.

3. Shave

With a bun (even though I know it's bad for me). When I make burgers during normal training time for Jill and I, we eat them Protein-style.

Occasionally, except I rarely eat butter slathered steaks without any sides, which were (are?) a staple of Atkins. ;)

I wear the Jawbones on the bike. They lower part of the hinge impairs my view of my watch if I run in them, so I switch to the FlakJackets for the run.

I don't wear the compression socks much since I got the NormaTec. I wear them when I travel. And after racing. And if I drive to do my long run, I wear them after that. My typical usage of the NormaTec depends on training. If I run in the morning, then I will use it after running before swimming or cycling. Or if I have a bike before my run (but not a run off the bike) then I will use it between those workouts. When I do it during the day, I use it for 30min. Sometimes, if it is just a long brick day, then I won't use it during the day. I use it (almost) every night for 45min-60min after dinner. Same pressure protocol regardless.

I don't run in the five fingers at all in season. I want to get a pair of the new lace-up ones with the heavier duty sole. I think I'd run in those more regularly.

Hi Jordan,

Congrats on the win! I've been a big fan since seeing you crush at Penticton!

After reading your last Ask me anything thread, I've been playing around with my diet a bit. What Rice bread do you use? All I can seem to find is frozen stuff around here, and I'm not sure if it's badly freezer burned or what, but it is almost inedible. It's so dry and heavy, about half a sandwich is all I can stomach (and I'll eat just about anything!). Have I just got bad rice bread, or is it all like this?

Cheers,
Mike

After reading this thread, I decided to give rice bread a try. The (non-frozen) rice bread I found was... vile. It was so bad I couldn't even choke down an almond butter & grape jelly sandwich, which is perhaps the best food in the world if done with good (wheat) bread. I tried toasting it... no help. Then I tried microwaving it to make it a bit more moist... also no help.

It's been a long time since I've been so unimpressed by a food.

There is none that is really super delicious. The best tasting stuff, I think, is the Glutino Cinnamon-Raisin. Glutino breads use some tapioca starch, but are still gluten free. They tend to be ligher than the only-rice breads. I personally eat the Food For Life brown rice bread most of the time, which I think is fairly good. You MUST use a toaster. And toast it quite a bit. The warmer it is, the softer and lighter it is. But it's never going to replace really good wheat flour bread. But toasting it and eating it warm is the way to go. Depending on what sort of sandwich you are making, it's also good to use something to further moisten the bread - which is why I think almond butter sandwiches are good. But for cold cuts or something like that, use an olive oil or similar to make the bread softer.

1. Admit to the truth, and then go hang out with some other triathletes. ;) That being said, I think as triathlon-focused as most triathletes are, it's really just a reflection of having a passion for the sport. People love triathlon. People don't seem to love step-aerobics, for example, in the same way. So anytime you find people that really have a passion for what they do - either as a hobby or otherwise - I think you end up with other folks being critical. For such a "self-serving" group, I was amazed at how much money, for example, the Janus Charity Challenge has raised in it's ~10 year (IIRC) life - over $40 MILLION dollars. As for the ego part, I think people ought to be proud of caring about being fit & healthy & doing something they are excited about and committed to.

2. Proper fitting tri-jerseys are not so bad. Fortunately, I am sponsored by a European-based clothing company - Kiwami - which helps. Proper fitting bike jerseys on the other hand...

The reason I ask is we often get accused of being ego-centric (whether it is by wives, co-workers, or just plailn non-triathletes) but I think the nature of the sport calls for it, to some degree, and people confuse narcicissm with devotion to the sport and what the body can handle. I also ask because I too have a thin upper body and most jerseys (tri or cycling) either dig into my armpits during the run or twist all over my torso on the ride.

I also eat yogurt every day, but if I am traveling, I will often take probiotics instead of eating yogurt. So I would say I take in some form of active cultures every day.

Do you find this to be a good combination? I eat yogurt just about every day (other than when travelling). When travelling it is tough for me to keep my stomach feeling good and regular.

I've often thought about taking probiotics, but didn't know if it was a waste if it wasn't something I was going to be taking everyday. I wasn't sure if it was somethig that needed to be taken consistently or if it was something that could be taken on an "as needed" basis. However, I guess if I am eating yogurt the other days, the two things would work in combination with one another.

Is there a particular brand you like?

Anything with an enteric coating (helps protect it from stomach acid). Jill usually pick the particular brand of ones we buy, and it changes a lot based on where we are and what is available.

I would say probiotics & fish oil are the two of the best things you can do for your body.

1. I was (first time ever).

2. I know TJ & Torsten (2nd & 3rd) were not. Richie Cunningham (4th) was. On the women's side, I know Sam McGlone was, but I forget who else. I think it was three women, but it might have been two and two. USADA oversaw the testing.

And are probiotics something that can be effectively used on an as needed basis to supplement the days when you are not getting active cultures from yogurt? Or are they something that needs to be taken consistently in order to establish appropriate levels in the body?

I think they can be taken "as needed," especially if you are a yogurt-eater or kefir-drinker (basically, you get active cultures somewhere else on a regular basis). But I also think it's individual. For example, if you are someone who has taken a lot of antibiotics for one reason or another, you should probably take probiotics consistently to establish a more normal level. In terms of evaluating normal, I'd use your own body as a guide, but if you are picky, there are many labs that will do stool sample analysis to evaluate the levels of your various intestinal flora. I've not done that, but I know people who have and have used that as a guide and it's made a big difference for them. I believe there are some pretty standard guidelines out there for replenishing intestinal flora. Jill has used a protocol developed by a man named Paul Chek that he calls the "4R Plan." Each phase of "R" is ~3-months:

1. Remove: This entails eliminating anything in their life that may create parasites, bacteria, fungus, etc. As well, any environmental derived toxic substances, including conventional foods, plastic, microwaves, hygiene and cleaning products. There is always organic!

2. Replace: This entails replenishing enzymes and other digestive factors which may be limiting healing. The key ingredients are pancreatic, digestive and liver enzymes.

3. Reinocculate: This entails reintroducing good microflora back into the gut. This means pre and probiotics. Prebiotics are synergistic flora and mucosal cell regeneration.

4. Repair: This entails providing nutritional support for regeneration and healing of the GI mucosa. You can also add in glutamine, fish oils, zinc and pantothenic acid. This will reduce inflammation and regenerate the mucosa of the gut.

It definitely felt long, but I'm not sure if it was "long." However, it was definitely longer than last November, when it was clearly less than 2.4miles.

I use a Fizik Arione Tri2 on my tri bike. I use a Cobb HC170 on my road bike. I ride both bikes regularly all year round, except at this time of year (the "offseason"), when I only ride my road bike.

I have had very good luck with fitting people on the V-Flow at the FIST workshops. It also come with a money back guarantee for 6-months, so you can try it. I have ridden it, but unlike on a road bike, where I now find I like a saddle with a cutout, I do not like a cutout (or haven't found a cutout saddle that I like yet) on my tribike. Saddles are very personal.

Turkey bacon is not bacon. There is no "turkey belly" from which to make real bacon. Turkey bacon is basically turkey meat and fat which is ground up and then molded into a slab and then sliced. Turkey bacon is not "real food," IMO. Jill made me eat it once. I would not eat it again.

Turkey bacon comes from the same part of the turkey that "nuggets" are located on a chicken ;-)

BTW, speaking of "belly meat"...how does one make "chicken fajitas"?? I didn't realize that chickens had a plate or a flank cut...

I don't think the capsules are as good. Generally, the oil seems to be better preserved if you keep it in a refrigerator; that's the thinking anyway. Plus you are paying for capsules. If you are traveling a lot, capsules are certainly better than nothing. But if you are buying for regular consumption, just buy the bottles.

I do some functional movement exercises during the year. I don't do them every week. But they are all strength-balance exercises, so not traditional lifting of weights. I.e., do you count pushups as lifting weights (it's essentially as good - or better - than bench press)? If you count things like that, then probably a few months ago. If you mean traditional weights ("howmuchyabench?"), probably a few years.

Two questions:

1. If you were to go out and ride the IMAZ course in the middle of your IM build, same conditions, same effort, but no taper, no fast wheels or helmet, etc, how quickly would you do it (ride time, not counting water stops, etc)? And would that time make you say, "Okay, I'm ready to ride 4:22", or did that beat your expectations?

2. How many training hours will you put in THIS week?

Thanks, and congratulations again on the wins and the wedding.

Was reminded of this question reading one of the ultraman articles in which one of the competitors (Kregar) mentioned he ran off HR and Ribeiro ran off pace so they were pushing each other up and down the hills.

I think you said you run off Pace and PE for the run (not HR). How much do you ease off the pace up hills? Do you try to keep the PE constant or the pace fairly constant?

thanks

I'm assuming you are referring to the coloring agent? Ingredients: Organic Brown Rice Syrup Solids, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Citric Acid, Salt, Natural Flavors, Dipotassium Phosphate, Color Added (Wheat Fiber), Dicalcium Phosphate, Caffeine, Magnesium Oxide, Green Tea Extract (Decaffeinated).

I will admit that I actually didn't even know that's what they were using. It doesn't seem to be enough to ever cause me any trouble. The world is an insidious place.

I try to (relatively) ignore pace on the hills and go by PE that feels similar to the effort I was putting out on the flats when I was running at the pace that I wanted to. Does that make sense? It isn't my most eloquent sentence, but hopefully it works. I.e., pace is the guide on the (relatively) flat sections, then you just try to carry over that effort level to the non-flat sections...

Training - whup some ass
Racing - probably a ceiling race effort + 10%

That's generally true regardless of length. I.e., you can trash yourself just as much (or more) punching it over rollers as you can going too hard on a long climb.

EDIT: as an exercise, go into analytic cycling, for example, and see what would happen if you rode a longish climb say 10% harder (power wise) then you rode the rest of the course. Then compare that to riding the exact same wattage (roughly, since that is hard to do on big downhills) across the whole course, but only riding the whole course 0.5% faster. Greg_climbs and Lakerfan helped me with this after I raced IMC the first time. I was sure I lost tons of time on Yellow Lake by not riding I harder. They pointed out that riding 30w more (what I *thought* I should have done) for those ten minutes was basically negligible as compared with what I would have gained if I'd even ridden the whole course even just 2w harder on avg.

Thanks Jordan....this post is very helpful since I am doing IM France and Wildflower next year where there is lots of long climbing and lots of zero watts.

So to help me out:
  1. at Wildflower what % of FTP should I ride the climbs (should it be same as on flats for half Ironman)....is the answer 90%....or just stick at 85%
  2. at IM France what % of FTP should I ride the climbs....is the answer 75% or should I just stick to 70%

thanks

1. 90% - for Beech Hill, Nasty Grade, and then the last climb up after you descend from Nasty Grade. I think you can ride these hills as high as 95% or more, but 1) you have to really fit (lots of time on the bike, which is maybe not practical depending on the time of year) and you have to have been very patient in the middle of the course.
2. IM France, I don't know the course well enough to say. You can usually go at 80%, but anything over that tends to be risky without knowing the course really well.

I'd say cap yourself at 80%, for the time you are on the hills. If you are honest within that cap, you should be fine. It's the little spikes that kill you.

Just on the run. I have it set to autolap every 5km. While running I mainly focus on a screen which shows lap time, current pace, and lap avg pace. My alternate screen is total time, current pace, and avg pace for the total run.

#1. Imagine the sensation of thinking you're walking around with a "kick me" sign on your back? And do you know the feeling when you realize you've been somewhere very public with your fly open? Combine those two feelings and multiply by about 100.

#2. In the moment, yes. I mean, your legs are screaming at you; the guy seems impossibly far away; sprinting is the last thing in the world you want to do. But 3rd is way better than 4th. And, generally speaking, I hate to lose to anyone so, in the word's of my old coach, "it would be BAMF if caught that guy." And I *definitely* thought about the fact that the $1500 between 3rd and 4th would make a big difference when it came to getting Jill a ring. I was reading the latest issue of "Inside Triathlon," and Craig Alexander says it best - in the late stages of an Ironman, you take inspiration from WHEREVER YOU CAN.

#3. I was the finishline from about 11pm onward, but they (the folks from WTC) only asked us to hand out medals for the last 15min. I think they sort of have a feel for how long we can add some "hype" and excitement to the crowd and volunteers (who have had LONG days) and ask us to help out when they think it's appropriate. There's no "obligation" to come back (i.e., we don't sign anything saying we will or anything); it's just sort of something that is done, and I'm glad it works that way.

#3a. I think 0% of the finishers did. But most everyone there spectating knew, which is nice. Reilly also announces it, since even though folks may have seen us finish, we are dressed in "normal" clothes. I really enjoy it. I actually like that the finishers don't know who we are, because it makes it about them. I'm not trying to extend my 15 minutes of fame or anything.

Interesting. His position is so different that it really makes me think about the aero stuff.

John Cobb has said that particular position is VERY individual, both in terms of who it will work for and what you need to do to make it work for a particular person.

I'm trying to make a switch to a low gluten/gluten free diet and I saw your idea for chicken tacos. Well, what kind of taco shells do you use? I'm assuming corn shells. Also, how do you prepare the quinoa? I like quinoa, but I usually mix it up to mask the nutty flavor a bit. Do you do anything to add more flavor to it?

I usually buy the handmade corn "shells" (just tortillas) from Trader Joes. Or get good natural shells from a place like whole foods or similar. If you don't have a good natural market, buy the CHEAPEST corn shells you can find. The cheap ones are usually just corn, water, and salt. The somewhat more expensive ones often have other crap in them.

Depends on what I'm making it with. Usually the chicken has enough flavor to overpower the quinoa, but you can make quinoa with 1 cup quinoa, 1 cup water, and one cup chicken stock // soup (like a red pepper and tomato or butternut squash) // or something similar. Or just mix in some chili powder or the like. But usually I just rely on the flavor of the food and just make the quinoa normally.

Hi, I was a little curious about your bike sizing. You seem to ride frames that are typically smaller than what most people your size would ride fitted to. Do you just have real long legs and a shorter torso, prefer a more aggressive position, or something else?

Quite long legs and a short torso. I guess I've never really gotten caught up in what size bike I *should* ride. I just ride the one that fits, whatever size that happens to be.

Jordan I was looking at the kiwami Iron distance tri suits comparing the Konami and the kaiman club.

Have you worn both or do you have any feedback?

Do you have a discount code for using your name?

Thanks and good luck in the Rev's next year

This isn't necessarily limited to IMAZ, but seeing what/how you carry in terms of hydration, nutrition, and tool/repair gear for a race, how does that differ from what you carry while training? Basically, I'm really just curious if you carry a bottle between your bars and your flat repair gear in baggies while training or do you carry utilize a different set up?

Quite different cuts. The kaiman is cut to be a bit looser, and also to carry a lot more. I don't personally like the front zip on the kaiman. I just much prefer back zips. But I do think the wider shoulders on the kaiman offer better coverage in the sun and might be a bit more comfortable if you have broader shoulders. Clothing is very personal. It's not simply a matter of build.

I don't believe there is a discount code, but if you contact kiwami usa (or europe) they can help you select the right choice or help out with returns if you want to try both.

I don't usually carry a bottle between my bars in training because some fluid always gets on the bars and front brake. One bottle in a regular cage on frame and one in the jersey pocket in back.

I carry a regular saddle bag with:
Two co2
Inflator
More complete multi tool than what I race with
Two pedros tire levers
Two cut up tire sections to use as boots
Spare extenders (since I train on 404s) and teflon tape
Two tubes
Patches
$20

I assume there was some time in there where you had the bars up the 8cm but the same longer cranks. What moved you to the higher position? Focus on long distance racing? Windtunnel? General discomfort?

Congrats on the race! I have a question that maybe isn't specific to IMAZ, but:

Does your stomach ever get unhappy during a race or do you have your nutrition so dialed that it is just not a concern? If it does give you problem, do you have any tricks on what to do to get it happy again?

I'm assuming you mean 8mm, not 8cm, as in the fact that I added the 8mm risers under my aerobar pads. That was just a feeling of very slight discomfort when climbing in the aerobars. I tend to run right on the borderline of too closed a hip angle, especially on 175 cranks. So 8mm was perfect...

I haven't had it happen in a long time. But the two best things, IME, are salt & coke. If I ran into problems, I take more of each of those.

I'd be very surprised, knowing the amount of money that the race brings in to Tempe and knowing how many people would not show up unless they knew the lake was full...

Digging this up to ask an equipment question. Did you run a 54 or 55-tooth chain ring at IMAZ for the return back into town each lap? What's your opinion on 53 vs 54 or 55 for this race for someone looking to ride the course at 225 watts - 4:50-5:00 or so.

53 is what I've run every year. Never really wished for more either.

Thanks again for doing this. Great thread.

I saw that you said you train on your 404's.

Any reason you do this since every photo i've seen you're racing on a 808/1080 front and 900 rear?

404s are just a very good all around training wheel. Although I lost my 404s to the crash, and logged about 2000 miles on 808s since then.

Really, though, I have spent *enough* time TRAINING on my disc/808-1080 setups to be very comfortable. So I don't even really notice any handling changes when I mount them up.

Train on your race wheels. It's important.
