Jodi, I have had similar success with a similar program. I have been eating paleo for eight months and in that time my total cholesterol has dropped from 138 to 113 (I am a 34 yr. old male). I cannot remember my HDL/LDL off hand - but they were just fine. I eat a ton of lean protein also.

Cheers, Paul

here's the ingredients list:

organic rolled oats
organic evaporated cane juice (basically sugar)
organic flaxseeds and sea salt

is it just the cane juice that makes this bad? this seems like little to no processing to me.

so if i made oatmeal from a non-instant package (like if i bought it in bulk) and added a banana or two, that would be good?

I like the idea of sending to swimfan also. I've been good today and didn't fall to the temptation of the hershey kiss.

Yup. You can even buy The traditional oatmeal in the round box --that would work well enough!

Hi Bryce

First a caveat - I eat pretty much a purely paleo diet so I do not eat any type of grain at all in my diet. Having said that, the rolled oats have already been processed (the rolling process) and the sugar cane has been processed to extract cane juice. I don't think the human body can get anything out of whole flaxseeds unless you are lucky enough to crush one of those little suckers between your teeth before swallowing. Perhaps I am too strict on the “processed” definition – but I’ll stick to it.

I would define unprocessed foods as anything that has been harvested and eaten directly with no added ingredients... e.g. fruits, nuts, berries, meat, seafood etc.

Cheers, Paul

I'm dumb too. And fat. Here are my details...

Jamma.

318 lbs. yeah, 318, not a typo. going with a goal date of 10/31 to keep my goals smaller. Planning on around ~2 lbs a week, first goal is 299 on Halloween. With the ~2/week, I'm planning for 280 by the New Year, but will adjust accordingly if you don't mind. Oh, does this wiki thing allow for editing after the fact should I need to adjust? Thanks to whoever can submit my data.

Jamma.

Hi Bryce,

What I do with my oatmeal is I add 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter and a scoop of protein powder. Then you can cut up some bananas or apples and put those in. It makes a great meal and is very filling. it does add calories, but it's still between 400-500. Great for days with heavy workouts planned.

Oh, man, you have been listening to swimfan for too long. Keep it positive! You can do this and we are all here for support. I think you will be amazed at how easy it is to lose weight if you stick to Lauren's plan. The hardest part is getting started. After the first few weeks you'll be in cruise control.

Wiki is totally editable, so don't worry about having to change things. I'll get it up there if no one else puts it in (the page is currently being edited by someone else so I can't get in). If you need any editing or need any stats put in feel free to email or PM me (jmthoms1@hotmail.com)

You can think VERY strictly but I prefer a better way, which allows for more variety but still retains health:

Processed = additives, preservatives, and stripped-down foods
(you can also used the word 'refined')

For example: some people can mash corn by hand to create a tortilla. Some people would call that processed, but if the ingredients are whole foods (whole grains, no stripped hulls/germ, etc) it is still a very healthy food.

Flaxseeds HAVE to be ground to get the best oils out. Many people recommend grinding (in a coffee grinder) right before eating. This is great but it's very strict. You can instead make a healthy choice for refrigerated flax seed oil in a dark bottle (the dark bottle and refrigeration keeps the oil from going rancid by warmth and light)

I was paleo for a while but it was too low-carb for me: I became ill. Now I choose grains carefully (and sporatically) but not base all my meals around them.

My 2c

Simple wiki instructions:

If you want to create your own page which can be reached by clicking on your name in the home page chart do this:

Click on "Edit Page" ( one of the buttons in the top left of the page) and change your name to have brackets around it to look like this: [godzilla]

All of the other slashes, dashes and lines remain the same.

Save the edit and then your name on the home page will be highlighted. Click on your highlighted name and a new page will open where you can begin adding information by, again, hitting the edit button. You can just type as you would normally and this wil show up after you save the edit.

One style format that is very handy is to make a word or line bold. If you type:
**hello tri world**
It will show up in bold type.

When you are editing the page, in the right sidebar there is a link to "Style Help" which will give you all the information that you need to customize the format of your page.

Thanks for your rapt attention. I will now lower my seat.

What to do about protein?

http://www.fitday.com/...html?Owner=saltman95

I have kept my journal all day today (see above). I think I have eaten fairly well....thus far, save for the banana bread this morning. There is a lot of time left in the day though. Anyway, I ate an entire chicken breast at lunch and threw in a zone bar (I know its processed) in the afternoon, but I realized I have been super low on protein. I ate more than usual today and I way low. Right now my ratio is 56%carbs/24%protein/20%fat. I am going for a run tonight which means I will be hungry when I get back. Trying to think of what I can eat to round out my diet today and its tough. I basically need a big steak! hmmmm......

Anyone else struggle with getting enough protein? What have you done?

Eat it.
Seriously.

Eat a steak. Why not? If you want it, and you aren't a confirmed vegetarian, go ahead.

Before I sign up what is the end date? I want to lose 20 pounds but only 1/2 pound a week.

I didn't gain 1 1/2 ponds a week so why would I lose 1 1/2 pounds a week?

You can choose your own end date. Most have it either 12/31/06 or 1/31/06, but I see at least one goes into March. I've set up my first goal for 12/31/06. I might extend it from there.

excellent point! I've been thinking about this thread and I'm so excited that everyone is so gung ho about losing weight and adopting healthier eating habits....I do want to point out that our existing eating habits have been created over a life time, so don't be to hard on yourselves and sometimes small changes are easier vs. cold turkey! For one, I'm a cookie freak, always have been....I can't quit them and if I did I know it wouldn't last long, so I have a few brands which I buy that have no refined sugars or crap! They're expensive but worth it! :) Good Luck everyone! :)

Also thank you Lauren for your great recipe with the eggs, bread and soy cheese! It's actually my lunch today! Love it!

OK, it's taken me 2 days to read all these posts, but I'm in!

Lost 30lbs a year ago, I've gained 10 of it back, so 150 (and small change) now, want to get to 130. No more than 1 lb a week for me.

As for motivation, my initial motivation still holds, I want to be the best example for my 5 yr old daughter that I can, healthy and strong (Fast wouldn't hurt, but I suspect even weight loss won't acheive that. She still cheers the loudest either way.) Additionally, I must say, wet spandex after a swim is no time to be photographed at this weight!

I'm in, just got back from a cruise where I gained 5lbs in 5 days, ugh damn buffets. Couple that with the fact that I've been injured the last 6 weeks and not able to S/B/R and I'm up to 194. I weighed in at LP this year at 185 so I'm up 9 lbs in 6 weeks. I'd like to get down to 174 for 1/1 and get my bf% under 10 this year, currently at 15%. Wow 174 after being 240 3 years ago when I started tris...
