After 9 days off due to injury......

33x25m (31sec........24sec) + 200m (3:55).

A feeling of elation ("I'm swimming!") and horror ("WTF am I doing to myself?") pervaded the session.

I could feel my injury, mildly, but it did not get worse, and I never overdid any pushoff or kicking......I think. 🤷🏼‍♂️

The next 12-24 hours will tell me.

glad to hear - and keep us updated.

Damn. We are both having a rough time eh?

Today 9x100m (2:06......1:38) + 400m (7:42) felt better than yesterday. Swimming is easier than walking. And I walk. Therefore I'll swim.

My nights are still painful interval naps from hell. My goal tomorrow is to get a prescription for DRUGS THAT WORK.

Had a chance to swim at a sea level pool that was only 82/83 degrees, so took it and did the exact distance set I did 5 days ago at the high hot pool. Didnt feel great getting in, but man what a difference a few degrees and some extra O2 can make. Did from 6 to 10 seconds faster for each 500, finally getting down to some reasonable distance paces:

On the third day....

4x200m (4:03, 3:56, 3:52, 3:46).
4x50m (50, 51, 49, 49).
200m (3:18).
400m (7:32).

3:18 was a bit huffy, but signs of life are emerging.

Now don't laugh, but my "schedule" right now is this:

Roll a regular (6-sided) dice in the morning.

1=12.5m
2=25m
3=50m
4=100m
5=200m
6=400m

This morning I rolled 5. Therefore my session was warmup + 200m + cooldown.

This is fun. 😂 It erases my agonizing decision-making process.

I only swim.
I used to run. (31:09 10k)
I never did Triathlon.

3;18 is not bad skuj, I forget is this SCM or LCM? That time just means you are nearly there minus conditioning, so keep knocking out the workouts.

Back to the high hot pool, only I think my long discussion may have had some affect on pool temps. Seemed only to be about 83 today, and I can live with that all day long. Only had 54 minutes, so did some faster stuff thrown in with 200's, may do a meet in a couple weeks if I feel I can do something average:

jealous of all your kicking! my swimming is always faster / better / easier the more I kick.
I bought into the BS of "saving my legs for bike and run" in my tri days. Wish I didnt. Need to add more kick in tbh.

Got in today. First real swim since my TRUE GRIT epic mnt bike race in utah.
I did swim twice out there in the 2 days following the race but only for 1k or so. But thats something.
Was NOT expecting much. today but it turned out great.

4 x
5 x 100 on base +5 (1:20)
100 easy recovery between.
Each round we added 5 sec to the interval. So 1:25, 1:30, and the final set on 1:40.

Swam some pretty hard 106s in round 1. (prob a 107 in there around number 4 but just a lazy finish)
Round 2 was 105s and 106s very consistent. Less hard but still work.
Round 3 was now on 1:30 so it felt like a ton of rest. 104s and 105s. (more 104s than 105s)
Round 4 now on 1:40 felt like nothing!! even tho I had more rest I was getting tired having NOT been swimming in a week. But. managed 104s 105s and the last one I missed the turn at the 50 and both calves cramped up! lol. 107 on that one. Oh well.

Before the set I would have been thrilled holding anything under 1:10s today but to be 104s and 105s... yeah very happy

I think you were at the very tail end of a long taper there, and thus the good times until your arms just ran out of juice. Tapers are meant for a few big swims, not dozens!! Got my 3rd day in a row here, had a tiny bit of asthma at the high pool, but otherwise felt good:

Until Sunday, it was primarily sidestroke kick - a way to get in low level movement to make my brain happier as my ability to exercise is limited right now. So, not really doing much at all aside from time in water + burning the amount of calories in a raisin. I think the sidestroke kick may be contributing to hamstring irritation - high hamstring tendonitis dislikes hip flexion, which I knew, and I was sidestroke kicking only w the injured leg in extension (so only 2 of the four possible combos of sidestroke). Now I'm just doing fly and flutter kick, as I think any "big" hamstring contraction at all is not helping

Haha Monty!

You’re prob a bit right but taper at age 50 is very different! lol. Not sure if I feel tapered. At all.
Was back at after a big skinning effort in Vermont last weekend and two full days of skiing w kiddos (we got 25 inches of snow!)

Then home to a ride and lift again on Monday. Ooof. 165 push ups, same w squats Then some other lifts. It was my calf cramps that got me today! Was feeling pretty good… until that last 100 and missed the wall a bit at the 50. Reached w my legs and toes and WHAM…, that was it. Haha

Older age means more needed recovery. Period. Learning that (the hard way)
Back to the pool Thursday but prob less efforts.

Keep up the swimming! Some day I need to come swim out there w you to understand your pool / heat/ altitude situation. Haha

Yesterday: 1600m total, with a 3:15 200m.

Today: 1500m total, with a 1:28 100m.

I'm feeling better each time. My nights are still hell. I haven't found the right drugs yet.

Here's a funny thing: I often do an easy 400m for cooldown. I believe that the speed of that 400m is the best indicator of the shape that I am in. Not the hard stuff.

I'm serious! 😂

You’re probably right. The pace you can go for the easy effort, when fitter the pace higher. When not fit it’s a real crawl

Had a nice steady swim today. Tossing up a race on the weekend but have a family lunch so could maybe only do the shorter event not the main one.

50-100-150-200 as back, free, FRIM x3

2x250 2x200 2x150 2x100 2x50 low effort aerobic pace throughout
300 easy
600-600 as above 300 fast arms

500 snorkel 400 frim 300 snorkel 100 free 200 frim

your thread ;-) thank you..

was in Oregon for a week with no pool nearby, ocean at low 50s was not appealing..

the nearest pool to me has filled up this year, six lanes and all of them occupied during the afternoon, have not found a lane there in the last month.. have to drive another 15min to the cold pool, which so far has always had a lane. Funny that..
I'm glad lots of people are swimming, just would rather they did it at times other than when I need the lane.. ha

dropped one repeat from each set, travelling and lots of work got me down.
4x200 first 2:42 then faded badly to over 3s, 4x100IM, 4x50
HR after each set was near max, high 160s, but dropped fast. I quite like seeing the high HR, means I'm not systematically exhausted, which is when the HR struggles to get over 140 and everything drags..

This morning saw a 1600m session with a 6:58 400m that felt quite tempoey. That's 6 swimdays in a row! (After 9 noswim days.)

I think sleep deprivation is getting to me though.

I'll take a couple of days off now, then get back to a "regular" schedule. (No more dice rolling.)

Hey Doug, hope you can get into a groove here soon, what is a full lane at your pool where you can't swim??

I think my title talk did do some good, water about 82.5 or so, but it was one of those horrible chlorine days where you mouth is dry and lips feel weird. And of course breathing in all that chlorine gas can't be good for you, but at least I'm outdoors. No asthma today and felt pretty good with a day off out of the water yesterday(ran 5). Nearly got in the whole 60 minutes today:

Phew… yesterday was tough.

Back in the gym this week and a 75 mile ride on Wednesday… took some of the piss outta me.

MyMainSet:

300 mod (3:36) on 5min
6x100 on 1:30 “race pace”
100 easy
6x100 on 1:40 “race pace”
100 easy
6x100 on 2 “race pace”
Wd
——
105s on round 1 w a 106 on the first one.
104s and 105s on round 2
103s and 104s w a cramping 106 on the last one
—-

I’m not sure what I expected. Tbh. I’m tired. But I would have hoped to be maybe a second faster on each round. So 104s 103s 102s or faster w the more rest.

I gave it my all tho. I can feel my stroke coming back after a taper week into my Mnt bike race and then a missed week after. So maybe I should be less harsh on myself….

Super happy w the efforts this week tho and I am seeing some recovery between workouts. Getting old sucks … ha
