That's awesome. He has played soccer his entire life, so I'm sure he'll throw down a solid time.

Dude is a genetic freak so he can put down a really good time if he takes it seriously. I question the level of seriousness he will put into it though. He's way more celebrity than he is athlete nowadays.

Well, he was playing in the top french league this spring, so his athlete days are not sooo far off. And he looks like he's built for the event in a way that Ramsay isn't. He was always very much a celebrity, but I also think he has always taken anything he takes on very seriously. Sub 11 is my guess.

Definitely. I don't know, his life seems to be a lot more quiet than some of the other high profile celebs. I would think that his competitive drive that kept him playing for so long will kick back in.

I know people get pissy about celebrities getting a free ride to Kona, but I think it would be fun watching top athletes from other sports brought in to compete.

I agree. Soccer is basically running all the time. He should kick ass.

Soccer isn't swimming or riding so much though.

Kona coverage will be all Beckham now!

It's good for the sport! I don't know about you, but Ironman got me into triathlon.
With the exposure Kona is receiving, it'll really bring triathlon into the spot light!

Yeah, swimming is going to be tough unless he has some background as a youth. As for the cycling, he either has it or he doesn't. But I am sure that he can go 5:30 with a year of training and a good position. I predicted Hines would go 13 and he went 13:08. I'm calling out Beckham at sub12 right now. 11:30

He's not known for his pace though, that's why he learnt to be a 'still ball' specialist and whips his crosses in early before getting tackled. So not a renowned runner in Soccer, but his fitness was never questioned.

No I don't think so. Cycling is the easiest to be good at of the three sports and considering the engine he has from decades of soccer I am sure he'll be ok. Many of the best triathletes I've known have been soccer players through their lives.

1:20 swim/5:30 bike/4:30 run t1: 5 t2: 5 = 11:30

A steady 10:18/mi jog will get it done. He's going to have to put in the work though.

Then why do so many triathletes ride 18mph and run ~7:00/mi?

If you're talking about IM, that sounds like great pacing to me.

For IM a great run pace, definitely, holy crap, good. A flat IM bike course? 21-22+ is good. Great is 23+

No, I was talking Oly. I do agree that cycling is probably the easiest to improve at from your baseline but it seems to me that a lot of solid runners get into tri but just have no bike legs and will never make 300w. Nothing wrong with that, their talent lies elsewhere. Running is king.

When I ran Cross country in HS, one of our best runners did double duty and played and ran meets on Saturdays. A coupel eyars later hte soccer team much not have been as good andthey recruited 2 guys that ended up being all state runners and one I think went sub 14 and went to run at a Div 1 program. In some states where mens soccer is a Fall sport, there's a lot of "lost" running talent out there. MAybe play traveling leagues in the spring, or basketball or tennis instead of T&F.

HE could suprise a lot of peopel if he takes the traiing very seriously. Maybe sub 12 if he can figure out the swim. His build is much more ideal that Hines Ward.

Yeah, he's just going to have to put in some work and not try to rest on his talent. If he really works hard I could see low 10's. It's hard work and body type thing and he has the right build. A guy like Hines is just too beefy and it would take years to morph into a triathlete. Beckham is there already..just train it up ( and learn to swim lol).

Any coaches on here, should be salivating at the thought of training the guy. I think we here on ST can take this guy to sub 10:30 on his first shot.... if he can swim 70ish min...perhaps even sub 10.

I actually nominate Crowie to coach him. Crowie grew up playing soccer and wanted to play for Manchester United. Beckham is THE Manchester United guy. He even said, that he'd never be able to play for anyone on the Premier League other than them.

Hines was exciting, but I am totally pumped about Beckham.

I hope there is more coverage of his wife then him. Forget about Mr. Beckham it should be all about Mrs. Beckham if they really want to boost ratings.
