I'm not going to watch that video, but I don't think it takes "Hambini" to identify that Shimano had an issue. We've known this for the better part of a decade.

Unless he identified the problem before it became commonly known, in which case, kudos.
Please do watch Hambini's excellent video from early 2022, @trail. Open your mind. It will help you understand the mechanism for failure, or maybe you're all over that already.
Or a shorter follow up he's just released.

Appreciate the advice, but Hambini is "cancelled" for me. :)

Does anyone know yet how Stages is handling this?

Switch off your notifications. Sorted.
Or if not to that person, delete their name in the title line of a comment eg [NordicSkier]

Your second suggestion won’t work for him, as it appears that he’s enabled notification as a default.

He should heed your first suggestion though. The notifications could be toggled to off in the user control panel; took me only about 12 yrs to figure out how, and i used to have to uncheck the box with every single post.

I'm relatively new, so I have to admit I was baffled for awhile about how to reply to a thread without tagging a previous reply, so I've been selecting that last one, and backspacing out the author in the "subject" line.

Not sure if it's actually working in terms of preventing notifications, but no one has gotten pissy with me as yet.

Commentary on the latest Hambini video referenced the "2019 process" and how the issue was resolved from this point on... is that true? What's different about Shim's "2019 process" that addresses this fault? Given it's taken them 11 years to front up on the issue, my trust with Shim is non-existent.

Thinking that if I do indeed buy a bike with Shim going forward I just switch out to a Rotor crank.

I brought my bikes into the shop today to be checked out, and the mechanic told me Shimano has been sending people checks for power meters that were installed.
No personal experience here as all my cranks were without issue.

Did they pull the cranks off your bikes for the inspection?

I'm trying to find out how they and 4iiii will deal with this.... nothing back from either company yet.

They checked the date codes (accessible without removing the cranks) and I lucked out in that the only set that fell within the “bad” date range was already off of my bike and boxed up (I swapped them out for shorter ones), the cranks mounted to bikes were all outside of the bad date range.

I've used a half dozen of these cranksets over the years. Never an issue.

I have two bikes that are indoor only now, so not going to bother getting them inspected.

I would. Get a new crank out of the deal. I had one fail on me two years ago and the replacement is one of the new non impacted models.

Any word? I've checked and it seems that i've got one Stages PM on a listed crank. I'll need to get it checked out but curious as to anyones experience so far.

Rotor aren't without risk too - I had 3 of 6 rotor crank arms fail!

I have a set of FC-9000 cranks on my tri bike. Just took it into my LBS and had the inspection done, my cranks passed their inspection. I was kinda hoping to get a new crankset out of this deal to ease my mind in light of the risk of catastrophic failure. I’m considering shopping the bike around to some other LBS’s in the area to see if their inspection has a different result.

Have you seen evidence of catastrophic failure that was not preceded by evidence of gradual failure (cracking, separation, etc.)? That is, if it passes a visual inspection, it is not going to just break on the next ride. Shimano's inspection video shows examples of failure that were not (yet) catastrophic.

On a related question. Does anyone have a good contact at Stages? I opened a support ticket on this 4 weeks ago and zero update. I have a dual sided meter they (stages) provided as part of an RMA for a previous meter I had. Was purchased in USA and I now live in UK. UK points me towards USA, USA seemingly wants nothing to do with me.

Thanks in advance.

Stages' support is atrocious. I put in a ticket on their site on Sep 18th for an issue I was having with a new DA dual PM. I have since figured it out on my own but I have not heard a peep from anyone at Stages in response to my ticket. Six weeks and nothing!

If I'd known that support would be so bad, I would have bought a pm from a different company.
