It's not IM officials who measure the water temperature but the referees, who operate under the national federation umbrella.
In France, they must measure the temperature one hour before the start on 3 different points throughout the course, at 60 cm of depth. The lowest number is the official temperature, which is then communicated to the athletes on a display panel.

I don't know how it is different from the technique the meteorologists use to measure water temperature "officially" and if it can create a gap or not.
I guess it's in the interest of the referees (and the organization) that the rubber remains allowed, in terms of safety. That's why I said that their thermometers usually read low. I've been racing for more than 20 years here in France and I can count the races where the wetsuit was banned on one hand. But there have been numerous times when the advertised temperature stayed magically 0.1 degree C below the limit...

It has been very hot for 3 days and expected to be hot for the rest of the week. Not rain or storms since last week.

Current sea temp (24.8°C) - am guessing they take readings at noon.
Forecast to be up to 25.0°C on 9 Sep and 24.8°C on 10 Sep.

That water was still pretty freaking warm Friday.

I really hope it's not wetsuit legal.

My vote as well. I'd rather come out of the water not overheated without giving up the advantage to the rest of the racers.

Guess we'll find out in a couple hours

Just goes to show…you need to be ready for both. So many athletes swam in their tri suits and were obviously struggling. Roka ran out of sizes for swim skins at the expo.

I feel like if this race was in the US, they would have somehow found a way to make it wetsuit legal, but I am glad they didn’t. The French officials seemed to love to say no as well which probably helped. They especially liked to yell at my wife and say no to her. 😀😀

'Non' is the first word taught in all Frech schools.
Followed closely by "c'est non possible". With the drama lessons perfecting the accompanying shrug from an early age🤷‍♂️
