Not to go off topic immediately but I recently saw the cost of campaigning a Formula E team vs Formula 1. It’s staggeringly cheaper... like 90% cheaper. IMO that’s going to be a great feeder circuit for talent in the future (if it doesn’t become dominant on its own).

I am not a racing expert by any stretch, but is the electric race circuit any faster than the gasoline powered one? Because of the much lower CG of the electric powered cars? Assuming that all else is essentially equal of course ...

I’m quite certain it’s slower because of the lower power/weight and much lower absolute power. That said, the courses seem to have a lot more turns.

I am glad that both of you have asked about Formula-E as I am a big fan of it as well.

Formula-E cars are heavier and slower...its honestly not even close.

Battery technologies have improved massively since the start of the sport when the drivers would make a pit stop to change cars (yes you read that correctly, they would change cars mid race to a second car with enough battery life to make it through). They now have a one car solution that last for a 45 min race +1 lap. By contrast F1 races last between 80 and 120 minutes.

The racing between F1 and FE are very different. When looking at the circuits and you can see it. Formula 1 is more about seeing how fast you can go without exceeding track limits. It has more speed and far more money is being spent (though F1 is imposing a spending cap starting in at $145 million in 2021 with a subsequent limit of $135 million by 2023. Things will be way more competitive.). Formula-E is street racing -- which means there is a lot of drifting going down on the track. Both are exciting for their own reasons.

F1 does have an initiative to be net-zero carbon emissions by 2030. You might think this is a lofty goal, however the sport is already moved to a hybrid V-6 system that can runs its entire race without refueling during pit stops. They also implement brake-by-wire as a regenerative charging system to power the car. Nevertheless this has many speculating that there could be some sort of merger between the sports. But that merger has become less likely since the FIA has granted Formula-E its own World Championship status.

As a feeder for f1 there has been a lot of crossover between the sports. The most recent is Alex Albon terminating his FE contract to race F1.

Recent comer to F1 (thanks to Netflix), but super stoked to just be able to watch something “normal” again.

During a lull last season I watched an E race. just felt like something was missing for me

I think the production value on F1 is better and that's probably largely due to it just being around a lot longer. The little things add up: camera crews knowing the track, announcers familiar with the drivers, production being familiar with the track, drivers, etc. I think Formula E can get there.

I was pleasantly surprised this morning to see Racing Point and Renault in the top five. We'll see where they are on Sunday, though.

Yeah, it really is. I'm biased as they are my favorite team and have my favorite driver Carlos Sainz Jr. Unfortunately Carlos will be going to Ferrari next season. Every racer wants to go to Mugello at some point in their career. However, in this case, he will be playing second fiddle to Charles LeClerc.

Riccardo will be a fund guy to root for alongside Lando next year. So, I guess there will be some consolation.

Sainz Jr seems like a really likeable guy. It will be cool to see two young drivers at Ferrari next year.

McLaren won't look bad with riccardo and Lando, either. I'm a riccardo fan so hope if McLaren builds on their success he will have a decent shot next year. It doesn't seem like Renault was a good fit for him. I can't imagine he has too many years left in him.

Haas off to another rough start. Wouldn't be surprised to see some big changes there soon.

Really happy for Ocon. I enjoyed his story from S1 of Drive to Survive. Seems like one of the true talents that wasn't able to rely on connections as much as some others.

Perez is my new favorite driver. He deserved the vote in both Austrian events, especially today. Getting totally fed up of watching Hamilton/Mercedes win all the time. Almost ready to start booing them.

Perez and both Mercedes teams may be in trouble. They are essentially under investigation for collusion/intellectual property theft.

just watched "Williams" on Netflix. i think it is about 2 years old; but i defy anyone to watch it and not want them to do well. Pre-accident Frank seems like the most unreliable friend anyone could have but has so much charisma and energy he is still liked. Claire comes across as the opposite - thoughtful and reliable.

Not going to be a good year for them in 2020 though.

A good friend of mine just retired from Williams after working in their engineering dept for 30 yrs. Was there during their best years. Tells me some juicy stuff about the drivers - who were the good guys and who were the a**holes off the track.

Watching that series you really get an idea of how you need to be "in the circle" so to speak to reach F1. It doesn't seem many outsiders get in, and there are a surprising amount of second generation drivers (considering how few f1 drivers there are in total).

There are quite a few drivers I like cheering for, though.

i bet that is interesting. The comments on when they had Mansell and Piquet as drivers were revealing. One boring, faithful but complained a lot to the crew, and the other enjoying life to the full and much more upbeat. I liked Piquet's comment on Mansell's dangerous driving during the time Frank is in hospital following the accident and they both think they should be #1 driver...."he gives me the choice of being second or dead"

If your job is driving 300kph a few centimetres away from other cars doing the same, I think you earn the right to be an asshole off the track :-).

I mean, no.

I think you earn the right to be an asshole on the track as long as you don't really put other peoples lives in danger. We lost way too many lives over the years for this type of attitude to be okay.

I do think drivers need to have an aggressive profile to an extent if they want to be winners.

Here's my story:

I was in the corporate tent of the tire company that is used in f1 (no names used wink, wink). Alex Albon and Daniel Riccardo came to the tent to do talks and interviews, etc. Both really nice guys, but Danny Ric has a bit of an edge to him that you can see. Alex was just nice as heck.

Turns out I had the corner suite on the same floor as Alex Albon where we were staying. I literally walked up to him when he's trying to get into his room the night before the race (kinda drunk), called him Daniil, and asked for a selfie. He looks at me like I'm crazy, but obliged. Side story is that he took the seat from Pierre and Daniil. So I called him the wrong driver after meeting him earlier in they day and he still gave me the pass.

Alex has been wrecked off the podium 2 times in the last 4 races by 6xWC Lewis Hamilton. He needs to develop that killer instinct.
