One of my squadron commanders gave a talk one time where he discussed his thoughts on what sort of person would serve in the military. One type was the "enjoys playing cowboys and Indians" person. There was probably at least some of that personality in everyone. The uniform was part of the "dress up" aspect that made you feel unique. Throw in all the different uniforms and you could be even more "special", whether it was the patches on your flight suit, your headgear, your footwear, or the rows of ribbons on your blouse.

And you never know. Someone in Space Force, sitting at their keyboard in an office on a Space Force base in Colorado Springs, might find a reason for why they need to wear camo fatigues.

Now it's different, though. Everyone is starting to look the same, except on special occasions. You have to know what you're looking for to see the differences. Even Generals spend most of their days in "casual camo." (at least on the bases where I work). I get annoyed at my civilian workmates for not being able to quickly read a uniform and see that a Major General is mixed in with all the Lieutenants.

I even see it with aviators. For whatever reason they seem to like to spend all day in flight suits, even when they're not flying that day. Just more comfy and easier to manage?

Not that I blame them - they're rightfully proud of being the tip of the spear.

I get the chuckles, it is funny. But the uniforms make sense. The space force isn’t working in space, they’re running systems and platforms in space from offices and watchfloors in regular buildings. Over the past decades, we’ve blown up the number of different utility uniforms across the services, at great expense. This way, they use a pre-existing uniform so we don’t waste any additional taxpayer dollars on something new.

They are definitely saving money on something new, by creating an entirely new branch of the services. So yes, nothing new here.

There was a push by some in Congress to have a common camouflage uniform across the services after the giant waste of money the Army’s ACU to be replaced by OCP/Multi Cam in less than a decade and the Navy’s jelly-doughnut stain hiding blueberry “camo” working uniform. (Not sure why my sister service thought it would be a good idea to blend in with the sea on a boat... seems like a bad idea in a man overboard accident.)

And BLeP, that ain’t woodland, it’s OCP or Multi Cam. Marines wear woodland. Everyone in the service wore the old woodland in the 80’s and 90’s.

Don’t get me wrong, I think the general move for everyone to wear camouflage in office environments is stupid.

There was no need for the Navy to go to camouflage utilities, except that they wanted to be closer to the other services. At one point, between the 4 services, we had upwards of 13 different camouflage patterns. The Marines were dicks about their patterns and wouldn’t let the Navy use them for a new Navy uniform. Air Force decided they needed something new. Army seems to do a new pattern every few years whether they need it or not. The Navy actually went with three new patterns. The blue was one pattern. Then we had greens and browns, both different patterns, and different materials, and even a different cut of uniform that only special forces or people working in the Middle East were allowed to wear. Then we got rid of the blue ones, and now we all wear green camouflage, which is comfortable, but also stupid.

The mess we’ve made on military uniforms over the past decade or so has been an embarrassing waste.

Some truth in all of this. A big deal for me was that flight suits, flight jackets (one for summer, one for winter, and later they gave us a leather jacket), black wool socks, flight boots, and even the long underwear that we'd wear in cold weather were all issued, free of charge. We had to pay for our "blue" uniforms. During the Reagan years, they gave us five flight suits. (We were only issued two flight suits in the late 70's, and I could sit on a dime and tell you if it was heads or tails because both of them had gotten so threadbare.) Once all of the Reagan money poured in, if you said one of your flight suits, jackets, or pair of boots had worn out, they gave you a replacement and you could keep the one(s) that was/were "worn out". (Handy for changing the oil in your car, etc.) So you always had at least a couple of flight suits that had been washed, and they didn't require any sort of special laundry/dry cleaning/starch/etc. And I've still got them, along with the jackets, socks, boots, and long underwear.

In a flying squadron, we wore flight suits just about 100 percent of the time. You might only be on the flying schedule a couple of times during the week, but we'd wear them for flying, meetings, giving briefings, going to the gym, you name it.

But when I went to Fighter Weapons School, they'd had a few flying accidents in the 57th Wing. Their commander made the instructors wear their "blues" unless they were flying. Talk about guys feeling like they were being whipped and beaten.

When I was on the USAFE staff at Ramstein, we wore blues most of the time, but on Fridays the aircrew would wear flight suits and everyone else would wear fatigues. (This was in the mid-80's before BDU's came along.) Then, one of the generals thought it would be a good idea to have everyone wear fatigues on Friday. Almost none of the aircrew owned a set of fatigues, or if they did they were a set they'd worn 10+ years ago during some level of basic training. The first Friday with everyone in fatigues was a clown show. Shirts and pants that were too small, rank and other items sewn on incorrectly, hats that didn't fit, wrong belts and belt buckles, you name it. It took a few weeks before everyone got their fatigues sorted out, by which time the general gave up and he let the aircrew go back to flight suits.
