Kona Mini Update

Aloha Gang,

Well, our move from Kailua town to Waimea on Hawaii island took longer than expected and with a new house and 10 acres the annual "Kona Survival Guide" got put on hold as I didn't have the time earlier this summer to be in Kona updating things as I really needed to in order to bring the most up to date guide. The full guide will return in 2020. With that said there are few things happening you should know about if you're coming to the IMWC.

The County Pool. The Kona Aquatic Center is closed. There was a filter problem in March of this year which has required a full replacement system. That is being done, it is ahead of schedule as are the remodeling projects that were being done at the same time. It is currently slated to open (drum roll please) ... during the second week of October. Ironman week. If you wanted to get your last pool set in before the race, you'll need to make other arrangements. The Konawaena pool at the local high school in that area (on the mountain side/mauka side) off the belt high south of town, has proposed expanded hours to help with some of the demand. call ahead (808) 323-3252

Maunakea. Maunakea Access Road to the summit, observatories and visitors center is closed. There is an ongoing protest over the TMT (Thirty Meter Telescope) construction. Many folks are upset over the 5-acre site and how the summit area has looked like a high tech trailer park since the telescopes have taken over. I do not anticipate the road opening in time for many of the pre and post-race rides up to the visitor center or summit. Might I suggest those who want to do this ride instead make the turn on to Mauna Loa Road and head up that way? It's a nice road now -- paved to the 11,000 ft level. Besides if you go to Mauna Loa, you get to have a selfie with Maunakea in the background. This is a dynamic situation, so watch the news if you're at all curious. Yesterday there were 200 police officers and ... 600 National Guard troops according to local sources. BTW, Maunakea is the preferred spelling now, it's part of the mountain's official name. The older name is more descriptive than a proper name.

Old Saddle Road. This has been a favorite ride of many folks for a long time. A couple of things have happened since last year. Old Saddle Raod has been completely repaved. No more 40-year-old ruts from military vehicles (Those vehicles are on the Daniel K. now). That's a good thing. The bad thing? Still no shoulders and the road has much more vehicle traffic and higher speed vehicle traffic now trying to use it as a short cut to the and from the cross-island highway. Please be careful if you try to ride on this road.

Crowds. A few things have happened all in a relatively short period of time that will make Kona feel and be far more crowded than normal. First, Hawaii County is suddenly popular again as a tourist spot, more so than it has been in the recent past. Second, last year's eruptions destroyed 800 homes (more or less). Most of those were vacation rentals. That's put even more pressure on the Air BnB's and hotels on the west side. And then there's Ironman. Hence the crowds.

This year's race will be the first race in many years for which I will likely not be a volunteer and driving the Queen K while you're running it, for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with your race. I'll be sitting this one out up off of old Saddle Rd (although I am being enticed with a different role). Be safe in town, reduce your risk of injury by following the rules of riding and safe road running as much as possible and have fun out there race day.

Aloha

Thanks for the updates. It’ll be my first Kona, and I’ve thoroughly read through the older threads! Looking forward to the rookie experience - will be staying at Uncle Billy’s.

If I can get some time in the next two or so weeks to visit the Ali`i Drive and a bit beyond area, I'll do an abbreviated revision of the Survival Guide and post it here. There are several new eateries along Ali`i and a few new stores that really should be included. A couple of old shops (such as the Acai Bowl place that used to be in the King Kam Hotel) somehow got dropped by me and ought to be in the guide (that particular shop is in the Kona Marketplace Shops btw). All in all, it was time for a full rewrite and I just didn't get the time. Too much rain in upcountry Hawaii this year and things were growing ... fast (even for Hawaii) that meant double and triple the amount of expected mowing and brush whacking.

The bicycle shop situation has not changed much. Velofix is mobile, Bikeworks (Kona), Bikeworks Beach and Sport (Waikoloa Resorts), Mountain Road Cycles in Waimea (Kamuela). Unison for your race morning needs is till there as well.

In the meantime, I'll be glad to answer questions as will other Kona vets.

Q1: No, one knee is still "not quite right". Not a single triathlon since my last 70.3 in Coeur d~Alene. My goals now are to figure out how to push the swim and bike so I can walk-run (not run-walk) a 70.3 and make the cutoffs. One more time. Oh and to just be able to pretend run.

Thanks for this update. Would you say Mamalahoa > Saddle > 200 is dangerous to ride and best avoided?

Bill,

Great to see this. I've always loved participating in this in years past and helping out where I can.

I can surely see sitting it out - it's a whole other world "up the hill" at your new place. You would never even know IM is going on!

Nice to see the repaving of the Old Saddle Road. They were just finishing that up when we were there in the winter. Back then did not notice an increase in traffic, but perhaps that is now the case as word get's out that it's finished. One of the best climbs on the Kona Coast, if you start out at sea level at Waikoloa.

Make sure you come to the Slowtwitch Party!

That and the Underpants run are the only two mandatory Race Week activities! :-)

There's been a fairly steady increase in traffic along the road Steve. And Kona is still traffic-laden of course as we approach October. No updated word on the county pool in Kailua town opening up yet either.

Steve, It's been wet in Waiki`i this year. We're mowing 2 to 3 days a week on the 2 acres around the house. Plus side? The trees are growing like weeds. I just finished the area behind the house on Wednesday. I'll need to mow it short again Sunday at the latest.

Weather: There is no vog again this year. Madame Pele is cooperating (so far) with us. The two active volcanos (Kilauea and Mauna Loa) are quiet. This has also been the hottest year on record in the state. Kailua town has been no exception. Telling folks to prepare for a hot race is usually a statement of the incredibly obvious, but prepare for a hot race even by IMWC standards.

Park News: Volcanos National Park is open again. Many parts of it are closed due to extensive damage. There are no lava flows to go see but the change in the land is incredible. Volcano House is open for Breakfast, lunch, and dinner plus it has great views of the caldera. They also have reopened the hotel portion of Volcano House. Kilauea Lodge is open and thriving in Volcano Village, it's under new management now but really hasn't missed a beat, it's still a great place to dine and stay ($$$). Many of the other businesses weathered the financial storm which accompanied the eruption last year.

The town of Pahoa is slowly recovering also if you're heading that way. Access to the Leilani Estates and Kapoho areas is very limited and somewhat impossible still. The rebuilding of the state road into the area still cannot be completed as some spots are still too hot to pave over.

Maunakea and the TMT: The road is still closed. The Governor and Mayor are waiting to see which way the winds of public opinion will ultimately blow before they decide what to do. With that said there is the possibility they will forcibly remove the protestors soon. The protest has been entirely peaceful but calling out Honolulu Riot Police and National Guard to deal with this could be ugly. If you're sympathetic to the protest and have time you're welcome up there, the protestors are there 24/7/365, as is a small (usually) police contingent. If the road is cleared I'd not expect the police to be allowing anyone other than the workers at the existing telescopes or construction workers to have access. Bike Mauna Loa!

I don't arrive in Kona until the afternoon of the 9th, and I plan to put the bike together that afternoon. In terms of rides, would an early out and back from Uncle Billy's on Ali'i Dr be safe? I'm talking pretty early (probably 4-5 am), as I'll still be on East coast time - I'll bring bike lights.

That's reasonably safe. Bike lights for that early of course. Be aware that parts of Ali`i Have no shoulder so you'll need to be looking behind you when you move into the traffic lane and there may be construction on a 'bridge" south on Ali`i that can slow you a bit.

You'll be seeing a very different version of Kailua Village at that time of the morning.

I was born in Nova Scotia, and spent each summer there for close to 18 years. Am I Canadian? I don’t arrive in Kona till Wednesday afternoon, so I guess it’s a moot point. 😁

Ridiculous. Triathlon Canada paying AGAIN for our national governing body CEO to attend Kona. A race TriCan provides no funding to athletes for and hasnt for over 20 years. Kona Has no affiliation to the ITU OR IOC. This is a waste of my money that I am forced to pay TriCan each year with my race license purchase. These are funds that could help our Olympic hopefuls

After writing TriCan about this subject this winter I received a response that effectively said they got this, no need to question, nothing to see here.

Meanwhile just this winter one of our Olympic hopeful athletes had to take legal action to receive their Sport Canada funding that flows thru TriCan.

But yeah, lets spend thousands sending our CEO to Kona.

System broken. No way I'm attending any event KVB attends.

This is true.

Many key people on the marketing and promotion side of the sport of triathlon - for brands, events, and media, are in Kona during Race Week.
