Hello Women!
Great week last week. Not a whole lot of training, but still sooooo much more than my colleagues!
Pool Swim: x2
Bike: x1
Run: x2
I did a 13.1 with two of my girlfriends on Sunday. It was an absolute riot. We signed up for the early start for the "elderly and walkers." It was on an army base, which is why I wanted to do it - when do you get to run around on an active base? We got there at 6:00 for our 6:30 start time and it was pitch black and not single sign of a race, just a bunch of soldiers randomly walking around (with guns!). So, we finally found packet pickup in "classroom 5" (there was no signage helping us out - we just saw a light inside a building). We got our bibs and found out where the start line was. There was a pop up tent with a lady standing nearby. Looked good enough for us. So, we parked literally right next to the start/finish line. We got out of the car and started to gather ourselves when the lady suddenly yelled, "3 minute warning!" We hustled over to the start line 20 feet away.
She gave a very rough overview of the course to the 14 of us standing there. And the, "ready, set, go!" We figured we'd just follow the lead pack since we couldn't figure out the course. The problem was that we were the lead pack. So, we just kind of ran where we thought with one of the 3 of us occasionally running back to another runner to ask if they knew the course. They were following us. We held the lead until mile 9 when suddenly we turned around and it was like the living dead. Suddenly there were 4 or 5 people hot on our heels. We had been alone up until then. We picked up the pace but were over taken by 9 1/2 miles by two speed walkers (seriously!). In the end, we came in 3rd, 4th, 5th as we crossed the finish line together. Overall, when we include the runners who started at 8:00, we came in 42nd, 43rd, 44th, out of 53 racers.
No matter, we had the most fun.
Rock on women!
