This is the same old arrogant claim to the moral high ground that every damn lib I know jumps up on as soon as possible. As a conservative, I absolutely believe in women's rights, sexual harassment infuriates me, and 'aggressive behavior of men' isn't acceptable either. I also believe in equal rights under the law for ALL citizens whether they are black, brown, or white. Just about every other conservative I know feels the same way. Bill O'Rielly was a scumbag for what he did, but so was Bill Clinton...and Harvey Weinstein...and Bill Cosby. From the looks of things right now, we have an entire multi-billion dollar industry built on sexual harassment and trampling women's rights run by liberals that kick any conservatives out at the first inkling of contrary viewpoints. Do you think Harvey Weinstein is the ONLY guy in Hollywood using his power to take advantage of women? My bet is that it is an institutionalized way of doing business on casting couches all over Hollywood.

I also think we should have control over our borders. Does that make me xenophobic?

I believe in the rule of law and enforcement of those rules. Does that make me racist because all of you people have convinced yourselves black and brown people are unfairly treated by law enforcement?

#1. Politicians are the least self-aware people on the planet. Because this is so, it also makes them totally predictable and, thus, BORING. And I'd rather not waste time on them. Because they're BORING.

#2. Hollywood -- meaning the "artist"-class denizens that populate the place, like to hold themselves out as an elite, nearly god-like, class that's morally superior to all us yokels. I include Harvey Weinstein in this class. Before he morally ejaculated into the potted plants, that is. ;-)

Tinseltown has for many years presumed to criticize and chastise most of us out in the hinterlands (i.e. everyone east of I-5 and west of I-95) for our various and sundry faults, which are innumerable in their eyes. And the folks in that town really and truly believe it's their duty -- they, of course being the elite among us -- to instruct us and guide us. Because, after all, we really need a movie star to provide our moral education and help us learn the difference between right and wrong, amirite or amirite?

What a crock they all -- and I mean ALL -- are.

Meryl "I Had No Idea Harvey Weinstein Was A Creep" Streep? It's obvious she knew. And when it came time to choose between her carefully developed persona of Courageous Woman Who Speaks Truth To Power and her career, she came down squarely on the side of her career. They ALL knew and they ALL chose their career rather than to stand up to the kind of behavior that Weinstein -- just one among a legion of such creeps plying their trade in Hollywood -- believed was part of his birthright as a member of the Do As We Say, Not As We Do elite.

A flood of admissions from stars high and low within the firmament, that they were either aware ol' Harvey was running around Hollywood like a priapic jackanapes, or that they'd personally experienced the nearly fetishistic attentions of Weinstein, et al., attest to this. Jane Fonda says she knew and yet said nothing. Probably because, as she also knows, most of that town was eagerly participating in the exact same behavior, if the latest revelations gushing forth from the place are any indicator.

Like I've said; money, power, fame. They've got a very strong appeal, and most people will do anything to get them.

Good morning.

I watched the 20/20 show on HW last night. I had read some articles, but there is so much the show nicely summarized everything and there was more than I knew. I heard the tapes from the 2015 NYPD sting investigation (which I think someone alluded to on the other thread). Also the Seth MacFarlane joke at Oscars in 2014 (or so, he said of the 5 best actresses nominated for an award, "and these five are relieved they'll never have to pretend to find HW attractive again").


20/20 also played Meryl "Thank god -- Harvey Weinstein" Streep's acceptance speech. She will now forever be remembered for that moment. Sally Field can now take comfort as she no longer owns the most embarrassing acceptance speech moment.

As it turns out, 'institutionalized' was exactly the correct phrase to use in reference to these sexual predators. Now, we find out that HW had 'accommodations' actually written into his employment contract pertaining to when he got caught taking advantage of young starlets. So, all of the parties to the contract knew about his history of preying on these women, yet, nobody does anything. Instead, they write in monetary penalties for him to pay if he gets caught. Who gave a shit about the women? Anybody??? Were they just thinking, '...what's the harm, they are just sleeping with the guy a time or two. It's not like they don't know the way things work in this town.'

Lastest "find" is Courtney Love warning about him in 2005.

TMZ (cough, yes I went there following the yahoo link), aptly describes the Love video as, "More proof of the biggest lie in Hollywood ... that no one knew about the shenanigans of Harvey Weinstein."

This is the most amazing story. For years the Emperor has been walking about in no clothes, or maybe a bathroom, in Hollywood.

The former actress (current director) Sarah Polley (I remember her from that movie "Go") wrote about Weinstein and about the Hollywood culture in yesterday's NYT. She says the problem is pervasive throughout Tinseltown and in the film industry at large.

Yeah, I read Rosenberg's thing yesterday. At least he's being honest about why he, and most likely many others, never come forward when they witness stuff like what Weinstein did. Why bite the hand that's put putting food on your table? It's easy enough to rationalize away why you don't, too.

More shoes are dropping over l'affaire Weinstein. Almost a flood of women and men coming forward to tell their own stories about the Hollywood that most of us don't see and likely wouldn't have, had not the studio bigwig been so outrageously excessive about what some writers are calling his "appetites." Reese Witherspoon says she first was sexually assaulted by a director at age 16. Jennifer Lawrence tells of her mistreatment at the hands of a female producer, who sought to "motivate" (i.e. shame) her over her weight.

Harvey's brother, Bob Weinstein, is now being swept up into the maelstrom as well, accused of harassment (he vigorously denies it). I think it's correct to say that this is just the tip of a very big iceberg when it comes to Tinseltown and the culture that makes all of this behavior possible and even expected and accepted.

She f*cking knew, as that Hollywood screenwriter Rosenberg wrote yesterday. They all f*cking knew about it. And they did nothing. Because they were making big money off those men (and some women, if Jennifer Lawrence's story about that female producer is any indication), and living lives of fame. She certainly had it all, gained on the back of what's turning out to be a monstrous fiction in keeping with Hollywood's own fiction-making expertise.

Points to Rosenberg for honesty, I suppose, but the important takeaway in that confession, imo, isn't his sense of guilt over not having done anything. It's his questioning about what he should have or could have done, who he should have reported the behavior to and what he should have said, especially when the victims themselves remained silent.

The problem is. Who should they, or could they have gone to

The most recent example in the UK is one member of parliment was a habitual paedo. He led a party, he was the ultimate insider. What does a kid in a childrens home who is being provided to the establishment person to do?

The most destructive idea that humans have ever come up with? Easy: the idea that people are inherently good would definitely make it into the final round. People, all of us, are not "good." We are either:

1) Fallen from grace and are hardcore sinners (for all the theists out there).

Or

2) We are nothing more than very smart and self-aware animals.

For a fact we can be good, and we often are, but goodness isn't the default condition. Without some sort of external intervention -- whether that's religion, societal pressure, government coercion, etc. -- we quickly revert to the mean. Which is the sort of behaviors we're seeing in Hollywood, Rotherham (in the UK), Jimmy Savile, child sex trafficking across the US and the world, and on and on and on.

I think that John Hobbes, writing in 1651, hit the nail on the head. In our natural state, with no social or religious order to impose limits upon our hungers and our passions, "notions of right and wrong, justice and injustice have there no place. Where there is no common power, force and fraud are... the cardinal virtues."

A man like Harvey Weinstein -- operating in an industry (entertainment) and in a town, Hollywood, where there are no rules for people of power like himself -- certainly felt free to indulge his particular "appetites." He was unbound and in his natural state, with no limitations placed on his behavior. Likewise those evil men in Rotherham, likewise Jimmy Savile, and so on.

They're mostly still being fake, despite all these people now coming forward. Nothing's really going to change until they all name the people that did those things to them and we can bring them before the bar of justice, or at least can publicly shame them all, given the statute of limitations in California on many of these allegations.

But I get the feeling most of them don't want that to happen, either, as it would jeopardize the gravy train and the culture to which they've all grown accustomed.
