Put it this way. Bikes are pretty much the same, two triangles, a couple of circles and a few other bits.
I am fairly realistic about things, know that despite being an okay biker I would probably be as ok on any number of cheaper bikes. I liked the look of the Scott, it fit me and I thought, what the hell. In the back of my mind I always knew that I had probably spent more than I should on something that effectively did the same job as everything else.
And then I rented something else at a race in the UK. Then, partly due to no believing the difference, I rode someone else bike. The Scott absolutely blew this crap out of these other premium brand bikes that I rode. Not just in how urgent it felt but the handling and everything was streets ahead. It was then I thought I had spent my money well.
For a start there is absolutely no way that you FM0? whatever will look as good unless you spoend some serious dough on the finish. (So there goes my primary buying reason!) Secondly the way the bike is made and what it is made of will have such huge effect on the way it rides.
There is lots of talk about chinese frames breaking … i think that is probably overplayed. People also seem obsessed over chinese frames being cheaper, but you can get cheap frames from major manufacturers. However, there is no escaping the fact that just because you are buying something the roughly same shape that it will likely not look and feel the same. Do yourself a favour, go and ride a few other bikes and then fall in love with your Scott all over again.
