The estimate I use is zone 5 hr - 35 bpm on the bike and zone 5 hr - 25 bpm on the run. In turn we define zone 5 as the average hr of the last 20 minutes of an all out 30 min time trial in the relevant sport.

However, if you want to make something useful out of the info what you need to do is test the estimates in race simulations. You can say zone 5 - 30 is the number, but you have to go out and try it.

I think the other thread on the Busso I'm pointed out that the estimates can be off for an individual.

Is that a typo or is your resting HR really 23? I think the lowest ever recorded was around 28 bpm. You could probably be compensated to have some researchers run some tests on you.

to complete an ironman distance race
Go the easiest pace you can.
But to "RACE" an ironman, I'd say go by feel rather than a gadget.

When I'm in a state of arousal it goes as low as 19, but because of the shear volume of blood flow that requires, I don't factor that into the averages.

Interesting thread.

Z2 bike Z3 on the climbs,
Z2 on the run Would like to finish with Z3 but usually start to decouple around mile 20 and tough to get HR up
8 IMs and they all are the same regardless of terrain or conditions. I only slow down rather than chage heart rates

Heart size is inversely proportional...
I do have a heart. It's huge. But it's black and made of stone.
