Nervous system activation can be useful to help smooth the transition and control blood pressure. (the failure to maintain blood pressure in the spinal patients probably had more to do with the nervous system failing to reduce blood flow to the non-essential tissue, a homeostatic mechanism that has evolved to allow improved capability.
