Piggybacking on Sphere's holiday density... how big is your home?
Our house is 2300 sq ft, but we rent out the downstairs so 3 of us plus the dog essentially live in 1200 sq ft. We feel it is plenty of space but would need more if we have another kid. The smallest I've lived in was a 500 sq ft apartment I shared with my wife when we were dating.

What are you shacked up in?

Long Chile was a silly place.

Finished living space counts.
If your basemen looks like it fits on the set of Silence of the Lambs... then no.

I just looked at Zillow it says mine is 2100 but I think it’s closer to 3k. Both of the neighbors are showing as around 3k.

But our basement was finished super sketchily by a previous owner - with no permit on file. So that may be the difference.

We wanted a smaller house but also a 3 car garage for our toys- and could not find that.

I shared a very small 1br apartment with a roommate in Dublin - maybe 350 sq ft - under the eves - best year ever!

Really? Here finished basements count for both real estate and taxes (assuming your work was permitted).

Although it's funny, despite Canada being a metric country we measure many things in imperial. For some reason, house and lot size fall in to that category. Distance and length we measure in imperial up to around 100ft... Then switch to m/km.

Basement is finished and was not included in the assessment. But we have it rented out.

Upstairs we have 2800sq ft which is more than plenty for us to grow the family.

But today, we’ll have 12 people and 3 very large dogs, so the space is welcomed! We host the majority of the holidays which I don’t mind, I love having my family over.

This year will be interesting because my sisters dog is currently in heat and our guy is intact. So if we’re not super vigilant, I may me asking the LR if anyone wants German shepherd/ Bernese Mountain Dog pups lol.

Happy Thanksgiving all! Best to your families.

2500 sq. ft. for our family of 5.

3000 sq. ft. if we count the climate-controlled sunroom. I forget the reason, but the appraiser told us that it wasn't considered a livable space.

I'd like to downsize into a 1500 sq. ft. house once the kids are moved out.

Smallest was a 150 sq. ft. barracks room before I got married. I think our first apartment in Savannah, Georgia was 1100 sq. ft.

Yes, weird. Must be the bad influence from south of the border :-)
210 sqm is what we have also. Since the three kids moved out one by one it's just the two of us plus two cats. It's really more space than we need day to day, but nice to have room for everyone when the kids or the parents or the in-laws (or all of them at once) come visit.

As noted in Sphere’s thread 3600 sq/ft. In college I lived for two years in a roughly 750 sq/ft apartment with 4 other guys. 1920’s unrenovated 4 bd/1ba with two dudes sharing the “big” bedroom. That was cozy.

Not here. (Bi-levels or 4-level-splits count all levels, but if there is a main floor and basement, the basement doesn't count).

Forgot about smallest. I rented a single bedroom in a house once in grad school. Hated the roommates so I kept to myself in there. Hot plate and dish ware and all.

I moved to a studio apt that was probably around 750 sq ft IIRC. That’s when I started dating my wife. Had everything I needed.

Holy crap, you people have a lot of house. We used to have a 1800 sqft house which was too much house for us. We downsized to a 1300 sqft house. The size is perfect. The only negative is that we only have 1 bath. Every once in a while, it'd be nice to have another.

Condo is 1265, it has a deck but no yard, house is 1466, yard is about 11,500 square feet. Just the 2 of us, so plenty of space. (Still filled with crap though) smallest was our first apartment in Hong Kong was 350 square feet. It was a very small one bedroom.

When I move to Canada I found this mix of metric and imperial very strange. I did a race once where the distance was given in km but the pace on result list was given in miles/min.
BTW, my house is about 3000sqft

Not counting dorm rooms and "just married" apartments that we've lived in (some pretty small places but they seemed fine at the time), the smallest was a one-bathroom 1200 square foot bungalow in England. Current house is 2300 square feet with a 2-car garage, and now that we're empty nesters it's more than we need. But no need to move at present, and it's nice to have room for the occasional visitors.

Lots of 4000 square foot houses (with 3 or 4-car garages and two or three pickup trucks always parked in the driveway) in our area. It's not unusual to have even bigger places around here (Eastern NM/West TX).

3060 sq ft with another 1400 finished in the basement. We bought this house in the summer of 2019. It has worked out well in the covid world.

For smallest I lived in a typical college dorm for two years, those might have been 10' x 15'. I did live in a studio, with seperate kitchen for a year, that might have been 600 sq ft.

We are a family of 5 (oldest child is now 6’5”) living in a 1700 square foot house. Plus two dogs (15 lb & 75/80 lb)!

Isn’t your daughter only 5 or something? She’s half the size of one of my kids.

840 square foot two bedroom condo for me and my two cats. I moved from a one bedroom in spring as I wanted a separate office space and some where for guests to stay.

I shared houses or apartments with roommates for decades. The smallest place I’ve lived solo, aside from the dorms, was my previous condo at 640 sqf. In terms of volume, rather than area, my two bedroom basement suite where I could touch the ceiling throughout might beat that.

Biggest house I've spent a lot of time in was 14,000 SQ ft, which a family of 3 live in.

The first floor is the living area and bike area. Other people might use the bike area as an eat-in kitchen or lounge.

There are three bedrooms on the second floor. There is a second full bath, a storage room and a laundry room. The smallest bedroom I have made into my office.

The third floor is 33 feet x 14 feet x 20 foot vaulted ceiling. It’s one open space with large closet with the second HVAC. That’s my workout and other TV room. So yeah, I use them all.

When I first moved to Nashville I rented a 700 square-foot apartment and I had to get a storage unit because it wouldn’t all fit. And that was after getting rid of a lot of stuff before I even packed for moving. I could get by with less, especially if I was not working from home, but I don’t want to. I bought it before it was finished and it is more than doubled in value.

For a few more days we will be in our 1270 sq ft house. It feels a bit tight, especially during Covid. But could be better if we ditched 30% of our shit, which I would do but mrs wimsey wouldn’t hear of it.

By end of month will be in new house with 1960 sq ft, plus a 400 sq ft 3 season porch, and a big basement. It feels massive right now, but I am resigned to the fact that we’ll probably fill it with stuff we don’t need over time.

New place has a 300 sq foot open air deck as well. Town has a 2 acre minimum lot size. We have three small sheds on the property. I’m already cringing at the thought of yard and lot maintenance.

House will be nice though. Yard is pretty, has a garden my wife is stoked about. Schools are great. Way more rural-feeling and car-dependent than I want, but it is a decent place to give it the old college try and see how we do. And we may eventually move to neighboring town, which has more of a “town” feel and shares a high school with the town we are about to move to.

I just don’t get the suburbs/exurbs in Massachusetts. Very few “feel” normal to me. The only ones that do, I can’t afford.

Zillow says 1978 but doesn’t include another 150 or so in a sunroom. Another 1000 or so finished basement. Four bedrooms and four bathrooms is ridiculous for just the two of us.

We’ve been looking to downsize, but in today’s market the math just doesn’t work. We rarely ever even go to the second floor.

We put a15x15 seating patio with a cute brick wall out front, and it’s been a great outdoor living space. It’s important for our parties.

My husband is drawing plans to add 450 sq ft to the back of our house. I think it makes more sense to increase the size of this house in a neighborhood that we love than to buy a bigger house in a suboptimal neighborhood that would necessarily come with a bigger lot (I do not want a bigger lot) and a less-ideal pool situation. We looked at those houses over the summer & they run $1.5m and up. If we’re spending that kind of money, the house needs to be pretty perfect.

How much does an addition cost? Even if it costs us $200k, which it won’t because my husband is cheaper than me, I think it’s still a better deal to add on to our existing home because I’m getting exactly what I want. Yes?

Generally, it is cheaper to add on yes.
Prices vary regionally, but recently we built a ~300 SQ ft addition on to a 1200 SQ ft house. We re-did the kitchen, floors, all the trim, new roof, painted the exterior and some other upgrades, and the total bill was around $300k.

2800 sq ft. Lived for 12 1/2 years in just over 800 sq ft. It had 1.5 baths and 2 bedrooms. All 4 kids were born while we lived in that condo. So glad we aren’t there any more. Finally have space for the kids to play, a playroom and a big kitchen. Funny thing though, all 6 of us congregate in very small areas way to often. Big open area, all 6 of us will be in the kitchen right by the sink, or all of us in the powder room to see whoever’s latest lost tooth. Very crazy!

2,496 square foot log home. Wrap around porch in summer adds more living space and we recently finished half of the basement for an Endless Pool. 2 adults and 3 cats 🐈.

2 post and beam barns bigger than our house. One will someday be renovated into an art studio for my husband. I wish they didn't come with the property since they increase our property taxes :(

Smallest home as a couple was 700 sf apartment in Encinitas, CA in late 90s.

I could be happy in a small log cabin. We moved here for the land, privacy, remoteness, wildness, space from people. I do love our house but wouldn't mind if it was smaller.

Lucky you! I’m jealous of your work! Ideally, we would do exactly what you did. But my husband doesn’t want to redo the kitchen and we don’t need new floors. Thank you for the info.

1600 sq ft, 2 story with semi-finished basement and very large attic with two unfinished rooms (actually where I have my indoor trainer). Sorry Blep

When I was a kid, my family of 7 lived in a 900 sq.ft., 4 bedroom, 1 bath house. It felt like it was huge when I was a kid.

2700 square feet. Two years ago we took the inground pool out of the backyard. Just two of us now. Three years ago the second child left. For three years we added a few international students because I like the activity of having kids around. It feels pretty empty. Now would be a good time to downsize I think but it is a hassle.

Not just Australians. My parents repeatedly refer to our house as a starter home, it's worth 7 figures. They live in a four bedroom house and can't recall when they last went upstairs.

My in-laws live in a 6000 sqf two bedroom house. It is a massive waste of space and environmental disaster. Not enough bedrooms for their children to visit but 10 places to randomly sit and drink wine.

How do you get to 6k sqft with 2 bedrooms? Even with each being massive, there must be so many other rooms.

2100sqft townhouse (technically small lot single family) - we've also got a built out roof that's another 700sqft about but that's the primary outdoor space. Four bedroom, but two of the bedrooms are offices right now/potentially permanently. Smallest was our Brooklyn apartment - I think that was about 600sqft. Luckily it had basement storage and a little balcony, so it worked out well.

Just a contractor that happened to buy at the right time (land) and was able to do a lot of the work myself (its still not finished, but getting close) so was able to build a pretty big house for the money spent
House is ~6500 sqft with a 1500sqft garage and about another 1500sqft of undercover outdoor areas
4 bed (all with ensuites), 5 bath total, with a 25m lap pool running down the middle of the block and the house wraps around the pool.
The point of the house was that it was to be my display home. A showcase of what I could design and build without having to invest in a dedicated display home (which you then need to staff, etc) but life took a turn and that never happened

My mom used to clean houses. She would describe places where you couldn't find your spouse without the intercom system. A rich local farmer just built a 7000 sq ft home for him and his wife. They have 5 acres of lawn and 300 ft of concrete driveway. One of my pts remarked that the driveway costed more than his house.

They constantly try to escape from the darkness outside and within

Pictures? We have a couple larger houses with in our neighborhood, a 10k that used to be owned by a retired famous sports writer and multiple 5-6k homes. For me, it just becomes how much home can you actually maintain correctly. With that said, I would love the big garage!

Mine is 3000 sf on 4.4 acres. We have 1400 sf of unfinished bonus space up stairs with 8 foot ceilings. We will probably be finishing it within the next 6 months to add value to the house so we can sell it - hopefully in the next 3 years.

As noted in Sphere’s thread 3600 sq/ft. In college I lived for two years in a roughly 750 sq/ft apartment with 4 other guys. 1920’s unrenovated 4 bd/1ba with two dudes sharing the “big” bedroom. That was cozy.
I bet the house smelled funky.

My home is 1400 sf with a 320 sf ADU.

That makes me wonder. Quite a few large houses around here with 3 and 4-car garages. But do they ever park any vehicles inside the garage? They always seem to have 2-3 vehicles semi-permanently parked in their driveways. Maybe the garage is for storage, and the vehicles are banished to staying outdoors?

Of course it's a similar thing with some of the smaller houses here. A 2-car garage with a couple of vehicles in the driveway and another vehicle parked in the street.

This makes me wonder, how many vehicles do you need/own? Not even counting RV's/4-wheelers. (Another poll question?)

that happened to buy at the right time

This. When I was getting ready to buy, I looked at probably at least 100 houses. It was my first time so I wanted to be quite thorough. Ha. I had a very good realtor who preached location location location, and she had a good hunch that where I bought was going to explode. She was right. I bought at $85 per square foot. Everything in my neighborhood is now selling at $300 per square foot and above.

I was in the building trade for many years.
A 2 x 4 is not, neither is a 4 x 8, and a square is still a square (100 sr ft)

What always amazed me was how many trades have never really converted to metric and half of them grew up in Europe.

One of my wife's ex-bosses has a property in Portola Valley that is around 200 acres. The main house is about 25,000 square feet and has an underground garage with a white marble slab floor that has 28 cars in it.

He built a stream and a lake on the property.

The "boat house" on the lake is for guests and parties. It's about 18,000 square feet.

Now I know why there are "Mother-in-Law Suites" but it would just smell like pee and old books
