What's your morning routine?
I've been refining (ie actually putting some thought and effort into) my AM routine the past week or so and I've got to say my days are noticeably brighter. Curious if anyone else has some similar approaches to ensure a smoother daily takeoff.

My vitals:
Married
One kid - 8 year old son
two dogs

Wife and kiddo do not get up until 630. Phone stays off until at least then.

5:00 - 5:15am Wake up time - run dogs outside/check on the chickens/get coffee going
5:15 - 5:45am: Dedicated reading for 30-ish minutes
5:45 - 6:15am: Pick up the guitar and practice (usually have a song or skill picked out the night before)
6:15 - 6:30am: Pushups/hindu squats/crunches (nothing major..done in 15 minutes..just getting the blood pumping)
6:30am: The day officially kicks off

I've noticed my mornings are much more positive, I am much more thoughtful, and generally have a enhanced sense of well being. One thing I would like to work in is some form of basic meditation but will likely need to shave time off of reading/guitar to get there as I'm not willing to cut into sleep any farther nor plan on being asleep by 9am (that shit aint happening).

Anyone have something similar in place?

Just a gut feeling, but if I don't drop a deuce and a half before 8am (about three hours after I awaken), it usually doesn't turn out to be a good day for me.

Usually up at 4:30. Coffee and some reading (sometimes light, sometimes not so depending on work) until 5:15. Usually get one work out and shower in before 7:15 when the little one (23mo) wakes up. Get his breakfast ready, He eats and we chat in French saying Maman every so often randomly so my wife thinks we’re talking about her. Dress him up and off to daycare by 8:15. When the day starts like this, it’s usually a very good day. In two months we will try to figure this out with another child. A girl this time.

That sounds great and congrats on the upcoming addition.

...you did fail to mention your pooping situation though...based on how this is going so far that seems to be a glaring omission.

My routine:

(Married, one 3 year old kid, one 4 year old dog).

Wake up at 4:30.
Gym/run starts at 5
Home by 6:15
at 630 a group of neighbors gets together at a large field by my place with their dogs, so, I grab a coffee and take the dog there to wrestle around from 630-7.

Daughter wakes at 630, wife starts getting her ready.

When I get home at 7, wife leaves for work and I make breakfast. Usually a 3-4 egg omelette with braised greens on the side.

7-745 is eating with the kid, getting her dressed and ready.

Drop off kid at daycare at 8, then head to work.

It's a busy morning, for sure, but I like how I get my exercise in early when there are no distractions, and I get some fresh air with the dog too. Most months it's really pleasant. Jan-april it fucking sucks weather wise.

Your 2 year old sleeps in until 7ish?

Man, our kid is lucky to get to 6am. Now that she's out of a crib too she just waltzes in to our room and silently stands in the doorway like some creepy ghost out of a horror movie.

Married, 2-3 kids in the house.

I don’t focus so much on time or routine as I do habits. My morning goals are always to do at least 3 out of the following 5 things.

Read, write, meditate, run, connect with wife or son in a loving way.

I wake naturally between 4-430. I typically scan the news from bed as I wake up a bit more. Then I head to my office. The first thing I do is set my intentions for the day. If I am busy with work/school I get right to work. If not, I peruse the time suck internet. I used to write each morning and want to get back to it but i can’t make it a priority right now.

I typically mediate for 10 minutes around 6. Hit the can. And then go run. I like to be done running by 730. At that point my wife has drank a cup of coffee. And my son is starting to wake. During school, I bump up the time a bit so that I can spend breakfast with him and not rush out the door. I can cool down while spending time with them and then making breakfast. From there, I change clothes and start the day.

He’s out of his crib too in a toddler bed by the way. We had to change him because he was climbing out of it with a lot of ease and face planted a couple of times.

I used to get up around 5:30, but now it is around 7. Drink some water and hopefully have a bowel movement before 8. Run or trainer for an hour. Breakfast while checking email then shower and start meetings by 10. Sometimes I poop earlier and can get to real work quicker.

Things are a lot different with working from home and my wife out of work due to Covid. She is just a stay at home parent now.

3:45 AM - Up to let the dogs out
3:46-4:00 - Pee and wake up more fully
4:00-4:30 - Feed the dogs, get coffee, take vitamins, catch the news, and let the dogs out again
4:30-4:35 - Let the coffee do its thing
5:00 - Out the door on the bike
7:45-8:00 - Back from bike ride
8:00 - 8:30 - Shower and dress
8:50 - At my desk to start work (unless I'm working from home, then that happens at 8:30).

4:30 - 5:00 wake up, eat a cliff bar, drink some water, browse the internet while I wait for the morning deuce
5:00 - 6:30 trainer ride
6:30 - 6:45 shower and get ready for work. Question whether I have enough time to shave. Decide that since I’m wearing a mask no one will be able to tell and decide to skip it
6:45-6:47 - grab my breakfast and lunch out of the fridge, kiss the wife and baby goodbye and head to work
6:47-6:58 drive to work. Get pissed that the person in front of me is going straight at the red light so it blocks me from making a right turn. Finally get on the main road, get annoyed by some combination of person in front of me not even going the speed limit or the Traffic lights not being synced.
6:58 - pull into the parking lot, question why I don’t just leave 5 minutes earlier and avoid the stress and rush
6:59 - run across the park lot to get to the time clock before it becomes 7:01. I guess all that training is finally coming in handy

We really need a “like” button in this forum ...

Also, what is with the one-upping of wake up times? Damn, some of you get up early!

Having said that, until I was recently reengineered out of a job, I was up at 5 most days for a 5:30 staff call, then got the day started. I traveled on a very regular basis, so did not have a normal routine from week to week. Now I tend to get up a bit later, but feel like I am not as productive as I was before.

I actually enjoy getting up at 3:45. It means I have to go to bed by 9:00 PM, but that works for me. If I sleep more than 6 1/2 hours, my back starts to hurt, so it's usually a relief to get up to let the dogs out. Plus, I always have to pee by that time and if I'm getting up to pee, I'm likely not getting back to sleep. My mind starts going and it's time to just get up. Works for me.

You wake up with an alarm at 5 just to screw around on the internet? Guess it isn't going to surf itself.

I haven't had to use an alarm to get up early for something in at least a year. Get up whenever I wake up, usually between 4 and 530. Have some coffee, pretty much always have a massive deuce within 10 minutes of waking up. Exercise, shower, eat. Wander to my home office and start work whenever I feel like it, typically by 730, but sometimes hours later if its a nice morning and I feel like doing a longer workout or have something else to do.

-5-5:30 wife’s alarm goes off and she starts making noise.
-5:01-5:31 go back to sleep
-5-:01-5:31 wife lets the dog
-5:30-6:00 dog jumps back on the bed and wakes me up
-6:45 alarm goes off. Snooze
-6:54 alarm goes off again. Snooze
-7:03 alarm goes off and I let it go and listen for a few minutes and get up.
-7:10-8:30 coffee, news, slowtwitch and other internet
8:30-9:00 shit, shower and occasionally shave
Work

The above assumes no early appearances or appointments. I like staying up late and hate working out in the mornings. But man am I a lazy bastard compared to a lot of you guys.

Clearly that is because you are a crazy person :-).

There is a nice element to it. I like it in the summer when it's already getting light out and you get these beautiful waterfront sunrise runs, or just driving to the gym when the streets are quiet and the gym is empty for the first few minutes.

I just really struggle with getting enough sleep. I need 7-7.5 and preferably 8 hrs. Evenings are busy with a toddler and getting the dog out one last time, prepping stuff for the next day etc. By the time I get to bed at around 9, I try to unwind a bit but usually don't get to sleep until 10, which only gives me 6.5 hours of sleep. Compound that over a week or two and eventually it really starts to negatively effect me.

Sometime between 5:30 and 7:00 my kids start to rise and so begins the day of “feed me”, “so and so punched me”, “I’m hungry”, “so and so stole my toy” or “I have to pee” from the youngest who still can’t properly wipe herself. At that point it’s get out of bed, drink some water and figure out what to do first. Most days I pull the covers over my head and hide to try to sleep a little longer, because I don’t think I’ve slept through the night in over 3 1/2 years. It’s a good night if I only have to tend to one of the kids overnight, sometimes it’s 3/4 (nightmares, wet the bed, sing me more songs, what’s the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?). I get everyone sorted with breakfast, get on the treadmill, then do all the dishes from last night and this morning. Then it’s snacks and lunches and laundry, naps, more snacks, dinner and bedtime. Rinse and repeat. Our kids wake up so damn early (usually between 5:30 and 6:00), that unless there’s a super special occasion, we don’t use alarm clocks. Not even when school is in session. Little rascals just wake up. Been 11+ years...

Yes. There's some truth to that. :)

I hear you on the not enough sleep thing. I probably don't get enough, but my routine is so set, it's hard for me to sleep longer. I try to get cat naps during the day when I can. It's become a bit easier during the WFH Covid era! :) If I get too far into a deficit, it is not unusual for me to go to bed at 7:30 or 8:00 PM on occasion (although that's rare). It's a weird schedule for sure, but it really works for me.

So for all you guys who wake up before the crack of dawn, what time do you go to bed?

7:00 Up and scan the headlines, out of the shower by 7:40 at latest, grab something small and head to work. At work 7:40 at latest: Get dressed, grab something small and head to work
8:00 at work, (I live 1-1/2 miles away), drink some coffee and eat, catch up on e-mails and responses and then hit it hard at 9:00.

In bed around 12:00 or a little later. All of my exercising is done after work.

In bed about 9 pm, sometimes 9:30.

Up at 5, breakfast, and out the door at 5:30.

In the plant at 6 am. Get a cup of coffee from the machine on the production floor and then walk the floor to see what the night shift ran, look at the production boards, and talk to the early shift supervisor.

In my office about 6:20. Run some reports, skim the email from over night, sign anything my AA left on my desk, and handle a few voice mails.

At 7 am I get on the the financial call with Corporate Europe.

At 7:45 I walk into the daily production status and expectations meeting, which started at 7:30. Out at 8 or a little later and off to my first of several meetings.

That continues until about 4:30 pm when I get on the financial call with Corporate Asia. That is over about 5 pm and I normally head home. My computer has not left my side the entire day, including lunch. It does not generally go home with me on week nights because I can do most things on my phone.

Run, Bike, or Swim. In the house by 7 or 7:30 pm. Wife and I eat dinner, watched TV, and then I go to bed.

On Friday night the computer goes home and it is setup on the dining room table. I only look at it if there is a problem that comes across my phone.

I try not to go in on Saturday but sometimes that can not be avoided. If I do it is for something special and I leave when it is over.

Swim in lake for an hour
Home to shower, usually before little guy is even awake.
Hang out with little guy til wife wakes up (any time between 8-9)
Work from between 8-9 til 5-6pm

Client in UK going live:
Wake up between 4-5
Coffee whilst working
Deuce whilst working on phone
Work til 6-7pm

Manufacturing is a tough job, no question about that. I'm the Plant Manager, so everyone in the facility works for me. I just covered the production floor because that is what I do first thing in the morning. The majority of my daily meetings are either financial, customer problems/concern, or safety related.

Monday we had a machine catch on fire in the morning, and then Monday night we had a roof top AC unit flame out and fill the east building with smoke. The AC unit fire was while I was on a 30 mile bike ride and came over my watch via my phone. I was 12 miles from the house so not much I could do.

You get used to it after a while. Most of that stuff is easy to resolve. It is when the financials are off at the end of the quarter or year that causes me indigestion. I will never get used to that level of stress.

Pretty consistently at 9:00 PM. On occasion, if I've had a very tiring day, I'll go to bed as early as 7:30 PM or 8:00 PM, but that is rare.

10:30 or so

D'Wife will watch whatever Housewives show is on BRAVO that night [usually on some sort of delay, like if RHOBH starts at 9, she'll hit the "Restart" button at 9:30 and go from there] then I'll stay up past that if there are some good guests on Andy Cohen afterwards

This is exactly why I got off the production floor. Of course I still get calls after hours but I can usually deal with that stuff the next day.

Manufacturing is a tough job, no question about that. I'm the Plant Manager, so everyone in the facility works for me. I had thought I remember you being the Plant Manager, sorry about that. ;-)

This has changed a little since I am WFH with the plague out and about.

Alarm at 8:45
Snooze until 8:55
Snuggle with the wife until 9:13
Get up, pee, brush my teeth, put on some shorts until 9:15
Walk down stairs and log in to our morning meeting at 9:15

If I am running late I can put off putting on the shorts until after the meeting.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

Mine has changed since working from home since March. Up by 6:30, take dog out and get coffee going. Online for work by 7:00 to catch up on overnight emails/market reports (I work in finance) plus a quick review of the news (and a deuce once the coffee kicks in). Quick break to take my daughter to her summer program.

Before March I was up before 5 to get a workout in before heading to the office; now I’m getting in a late afternoon ride most days to decompress and liking it.

Yeah, I found an extra hour in my morning since I don't need to iron dress shirt/pants nor drive 40 minutes

NPR is taking a hit, though

Timely thread as it sounds like I'm 100% working remote going forward.

Wake up 6-6:30, breakfast and coffee.
Start work at 7am
Kids ship them off to daycare whenever they wake up (2 doors down) hopefully before 8

Now that I'm 100% remote, I need to refine my schedule, Id like to wake up earlier and do some sort of workout or reading before I start work. Issue is my wife works hospital shifts so that always messes with stuff. Sometimes she is out the door at 6:30, sometimes she is off, sometimes she won't be home till 10:30 at night, and I prefer to stay up till she gets home.

Clothing manufacturers and retailers have to be taking a big hit out of this. I don't think I have put on a nice shirt since mid-March. And it looks like a whole lot of people will be working remote not just through the plague but after too. No need for nice pants if you never wear pants.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

Same boat (more or less 100% remote until at least Christmas). Glad you're getting an opportunity to refine the AM schedule as I'm finding a lot of value in it (even without documenting my pooping) and hope others do the same.

One thing that I'm really appreciating is training (I just do body weight/kettle bell/sandbag/jump rope/trail running type stuff..in other words I don't go to the gym) later in the morning and not having the pressure of constantly watching the clock to be fully wrapped up by XYZ time. The brief morning body weight stuff is equally as valuable though. The combo of reading/hobby/brief exercise is really one hell of a shot in the arm for me so I hope you find a way to do something similar within a dynamic schedule.
