I know it’s early but there’s a nice group with AB, Beals and Jan with Sanders not far behind.

I think you got the names all wrong.

Amberger leading with Brownlee on his feet, Frodeno, Currie sitting in there. Lange at the back of that lead group. No sign of Beals, Sanders yet.

Lucy leading with Brandon on her feet and a big gap already 14min in.

Starky out with an infection/cold.

No Starky. Guess he had a lung infection. That’s too bad, I wanted to see how he stirred the pot in the race with his biking and AB and Jan. Damn. Plus I just root for the guy (though he has very little chance).

The question now is when is Lange domestique going to catch up and start pulling for him? Because he can’t keep pace with any of the guys in front nor the freight train that’s going to pass him.

NBC Sports has it as well. Not sure why all you clowns use FB to view it, when NBCS has the race - you can stream it if you're cable provider doesn't have it, through their site or on the app.

The xlab straw or shiv straw? I see the bta straw but not a straw from the bladder.

The xlab straw or shiv straw? I see the bta straw but not a straw from the bladder.

She was drinking mostly out of the bottles, and I did once see her drink out the long straw "appeared" to be the bladder. it was a long straw, unlike a BTA straw.

So now what? Brownlee and Frodeno content to shut it down and run a marathon together? How much can they spot Wurf, Sanders, et al?

This changes everything by removing the 2:39 marathon from the equation!

She has an xlab torpedo with a long straw. Curious if they get a shot with another straw.

Even the commentators are flabbergasted. It was such a sudden stop. And he walked away after, didn't look injured.

I understand something else may be going on but I really can't wait to hear what went wrong.

Daniella's formula of going hard on the 2nd half of the Bike may not work this year because the winds are picking up exponentially, and the headwind may be more fierce the back half, which could mean Lucy gets off the Bike in first with a 5-minute plus cushion to start the run.

She was pictured on her own insta smiling and happy post crash 6 days ago. Dont get me wrong looked liked some nasty cuts but otherwise fine. So i doubt this is the reason.

Would be terrible, not my favorite simply because he’s been a one trick pony (granted the best trick: Kona). But if this is the reason and looking back at 2014 when Jan finished despite a bad back injury, just goes to show who deserves the spotlight.

I simply don’t see it. I know that on TV it looks closely but to your point I would really like to see an analysis from someone really measuring those gaps post race (I think someone did that last year after the 70.3 worlds to prove Gomez was drafting). We have to see a fair race, and also simple fix make it a 20m rule.

Hawi turnaround:

TO just made the exact same move that he made in 2014 or 2015 when he got 3rd. Would be great to see him in the podium (I still don’t think he can outrun Frodo or AB). Wurf made a move they say.

I think the gap will be bigger after this on the chase pack.

Yup but he will be able to manage a lot better running in front than chasing. He knows a 2:42 gets it done based on where’s he’s at and who’s behind.

Not totally unexpected. Haug was 3rd last year with the best marathon. To me she may end up being a slightly better version of Rinny since she doesn’t lose too much time on the swim, can bike with the chase group and has a killer run.

Going out on the bike like it was ITU.

I noticed that he does that while I was watching some 70.3s he was doing. Brownlee was always attacking off the front, and then yelling at others to take their turns too. Surging back and forth on the bike to break the competition works for shorter distances, but will just break yourself on an Ironman. He's got to un-train himself from doing that if he want's to keep from blowing up on the run.

Awful coverage of the race, seems IM only has 6 camera's, can only tell us who's in the Top 4, shame Lange and McNamee dropped out sick as may have shaked things up a bit.

Maybe the poor coverage made the race dull but the only excitment I got (moment of the race for me) was seeing Charles re take 2nd place from Crowley.

Disappointed with Brownlee's race, I hope he sticks with IM distance now and doesn't do a Gomez as he's probably left going for Tokyo too late, without the mechanical and Penalty might he have cracked the Top 10? (I missed most the Bike)

I watched pretty much every minute of todays broadcast from 10:30 AM ET to 9:30. I've been watching the entire day of live coverage every year since they started doing it a few years back. I think the first year was 2013 and I distinctly remember Luke Mckenzie looking like an emaciated skeleton wearing a green trucker hat. Anyhow, I digress... Every year the broadcast has really gotten substantially better, and this year it was really amazing. The commentary, guests, video interviews, camera angles, they really nailed it this year. In years past I would walk away for long sections of the Bike and middle of the Run. This year the hours flew by and it was really entertaining. I think it also speaks to the quality of the field making it entertaining as well. But yeah, kudos to Ironman for coming a long way. Even my teens were impressed that 70k+ people were viewing the event on average throughout the day.

In my opinion, that was amazing coverage of the race; especially compared to 6 years ago!

Compared to Nice, this was an amazing broadcast. The same commentators that were awful flipped a switch and got super analytical. I was very happy this time around.

I know more than a few Australians. There's plenty of dickheads (like Wurf, who I enjoy) and plenty of reserved guys like Crowie.

What happened to Starky? Did he not even start?

Also what happened to Sarah True? I know she got an early flat, but then she seemed to do well for a while. Until mile 80 or so.

Next races on the schedule: none at the moment

Starkly tweeted he was sick and it would be stupid for him to start. Or something to that affect.

Sarah tweeted at 80 miles in the race was hot and the organizers should have canceled for the athletes safety.

Okay... first one is true. Second maybe slightly tongue in cheek...

I agree. The coverage has improved vastly over the past few years.

Hopefully NBC does a better job in their recap in November than last year

Starky came back into the pool area at Kam III with his bike and all his gear while we were waiting for Female AG start. Said he’d been fighting a lung infection for a week. He went for a swim and still felt like he was breathing thru a straw so he called it. He thought his fitness was really solid and felt bad not getting a chance to race.

I'm already looking forward to Haug Vs Ryf next year!

Ryf is better in all three disciplines. No contest.

People who say Ryf can't run that fast have to remember she hasn't had to run fast. She goes as hard as she needs to win. That's how you have longevity in the sport.

Maybe. We haven't seen Ryf fully challenged on the run yet.

Still, Ryf will take too much time on the bike for it to be a factor.

Ryf healthy next year will be #5.
