What is really crazy (I think the rest is mostly correct), third in line for gov. is determined based on the selection of the leader of the house of delegates.

The GOP holds the house of delegate majority based on a coin toss. The coin toss was necessary because of a single vote that was held valid even though it had multiple selections on it.

Or they could could follow the Constitution of the Commonwealth and if Northam, Fairfax, and Herring all resign, then Kirk Cox, the Speaker of the House of Delegates, becomes Governor and Steve Newman, president pro tempore of the Senate, becomes Lt Gov. The AG would need to be named. Both Cox and Newman are Reps, so there's motivation for the 3 Dems not to step down.

I am not sure if that is possible. LT governor in VA is an elected official. I am not sure what happens if he steps down first or the succession.

1) LT governor steps down
2) does gov. select his replacement, house of delegates select LT gov. or is there a chain of succession?

It seems the shit storm around the governor has died down and he may just hunker down in office. If he can ride out the news cycle does he have a chance to stay.

The Lt Gov. may have a harder time riding out the #metoo with an active person, the accuser, stirring up news reports.

Quote:
If Fairfax or Herring either resign or become governor, what happens to their positions?
The succession process for the lieutenant governorship gets complicated. If Fairfax either becomes governor or resigns, he will vacate his current office and the state Senate president pro tem, Republican Steve Newman, would be empowered to “discharge the duties” of the lieutenant governorship, said John Dinan, a Wake Forest professor and expert on state constitutions.
That arrangement would likely be short-lived, because the governor has “constitutional authority to fill the vacancy in the office of lieutenant governor,” said A.E. Dick Howard, a law professor at the University of Virginia who led the drafting of Virginia’s current state constitution in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
However, the appointment would only last for a few months, Howard and Dinan said.
Under Virginia law, an election to fill the remainder of Fairfax’s original term as lieutenant governor would be held this November, when every state legislative seat in Virginia will also be up in the regular 2019 elections. Then, there would be a regularly scheduled election for a full four-year lieutenant governor term in 2021.

Suffer Well.

I wouldn’t say that. I might say “she’s a liar” or something to that effect. I don’t like to call women “bitch”. It’s just one of those word Las that are particularly foul to my ears (when directed at a woman).

I don’t even like it when (on this forum) Hillary is called a bitch.

I much prefer the gender neutral term “asshole”.

I’m sure I’ve said it though, but usually I’m saying to a man.

Making this even more interesting to watch, this could weaken the Dems for the 2020 elections. If Republicans can gain ground in the state legislature and/or the Governor's office, they'll be able to more heavily influence (maybe even control) Virginia's Congressional redistricting after the 2020 census.

Holy fucking shit! This is fucking great! No wonder all the assholes on either side of the aisle in Virginia didn't seem eager to press this matter all that much.

I knew it, though. Because there have to be a ton of them with at least racially insensitive behaviors in their past, and all of them are living in terror at what's going to be turned up. Good!

Bobby Scott, you're a twat (said in my best "Warriors, come out to play-ay" singsong voice).

Looks like the woman who claims to have been sexually assaulted by Justin Fairfax told her story to Virginia Democratic congresscritter Bobby Scott back in 2017, when she learned Fairfax was going to run for lieutenant governor in that state.

Scott somehow managed to either forget about it or other pressing matters, such as how much graft and payola he could take in, occupied his mind, I guess.

Shit show taking place in the middle of a dumpster fire...

With each passing revelation, this woman is looking more and more credible. And it also looks like she was treated like a used dishrag when she finally did bring her story forward. SMDH.

No wonder she glommed onto the Ford legal team. It's her only chance of forcing the powers that be on the left to give her even a fair shake of a listen about it.

The Kav thing was a ridiculous circus, this guy's new pop up person is ridiculous.

There's a reasonable limit on this #metoo crap. It seems like an empowering thing just looking at a hashtag. But.....it's clearly being used as a weapon these days. It was used as a weapon against Kav, this guy, etc......

The conversations I'm going to have with my boys along the lines of "Well, if you stick it in Susie.......and she thinks it's great, that doesn't matter. Daddy finds out, he might choose to destroy you to defend his daughter's 'honor' and you'll be in prison."

I mean, geesh. Dave Chappelle was on to this years ago.......remember the signed consent form sketch? Soooooo, are you going to check the box for anal?

Wife and I both are liberals but think this #metoo stuff is gotten ludicrous now. The Kav hearing was a little shock to the system, but was against "those guys". Then it hits other people or 'your people', and you're like.......yup, they were right about this.

I get just the opposite impression, that DAs are very hesitant to prosecute if all they have is he said/she said testimony because very little chance of convictions.

Last few weeks local paper ran a story of 2 girls at a state college and how the college botched their investigations of claims of rape. In both cases DA didn't prosecute either because it was their word against the guys'.

It was designed to be used as a weapon from the start and it’s always been ludicrous.

Within 2 weeks it went from sexual assault to sexual harassment to sexual “misconduct” (which can mean anything).

It’s a fucking scam. It is being, and has always been, used to “criminalize” normal courting behavior. It used to be that a guy asks a girl out, she says no, maybe he tries once more, still no, and everyone moves on.

Now a guy asks a girl out and it’s “misconduct” if the girl isn’t interested.

And woman number 2 steps up.

Quote:
A woman said Friday she was raped by Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax (D) in a “premeditated and aggressive” assault in 2000, while they both were undergraduate students at Duke University.
Through her attorney, Meredith Watson said she shared her account of sexual assault immediately after it happened with several classmates, who have provided statements. Her lawyer also said she shared her account with friends in a string of emails and Facebook messages.
Watson was friends with Fairfax at Duke but they never dated or had any romantic relationship, her lawyer said.

Horrible if true.

1. All of us who screamed about Bret Kavanaugh getting publicly boo-foo'd during his confirmation hearing and in the press need to slow down and WAIT and let due process actually be honest-to-God due process.

2. This is 18 or 19 years ago. Not quite the 36 or 37 years past in the Kavanaugh debacle, but that's still a pretty long time ago. There was no contemporaneous or corroborating evidence in the Kavanaugh smear job, and how much is actually available to back up the (now) two allegations in re Fairfax? Certainly, there's no forensic evidence, unless one of the duo kept a stained blue dress or something...

3. If the allegation is true, and the WaPo piece says "several classmates" have provided statements attesting that this woman told them something about the encounter following the interaction between the pair, then this is some next-level shit that Fairfax is going to be very, very hard-pressed to overcome or explain away. I don't know what the statute of limitations in North Carolina is (that heathen-and-pagan institution, Duke, is in NoCar) when it comes to sexual assault, or if there's indeed any limitation at all, but he's done like dinner if this allegation is even remotely accurate or verifiable.

More "he said, she said" or not? Y'all tell me.

Apparently, a Virginia Democratic delegate (it's like a state representative elsewhere) plans to introduce articles of impeachment if Fairfax doesn't resign.

All well and good, but have Dems in the Old Dominion stopped to consider the message that a statewide blackface/KKK scandal which results only in the resignation of the black guy might look like to the rest of the country? Heh.

This is the real power and value of the MeToo movement. It isn’t about trying to move the goalposts around what is consent or harassment. Some have tried to use it there, but conversation has been going on well before MeToo. MeToo is about women not being afraid of the he said/she said trap. They have been told that if that is all they have then they should just keep quiet since they can’t win. They were afraid of victim blaming. So things were kept quiet and the he’s just kept it up with more she’s. The message they are trying to get across is that it happens a lot more than people think because they have kept quiet in the past. Hence MeToo.

The real problem here is that a lot of these encounters are not cut and dry. We should here the stories that want to be told and we should judge. That isn’t an easy thing to do for a personal and embarrassing event where there is a lot of variability on what society deems as acceptable behavior. From creepy harassment to awkward romances, there is a lot of gray area.

The tea leaf reading as of now, looks like the wannabe black men of old, the Gov. and AG, might just ride this out. In interview with WAPO the Governor reported intent to stay on and learn how to do the race thing better with renewed focus. No groundswell against the AG either, he got out in front and said all the right stuff upfront.

The real black man however looks to be toast. The zero tolerant democratic party and metoo folks are likely to claim the Lt Gov as their next victim. Alleged criminality is enough for legislators to work up impeachment.

The outright displays of racism years ago may doom future political aspirations but it isn't enough to ride these yokels out on the rail.

Zero tolerance is a bitch however.
