Actually, while monty will have to confirm, IIRC Mark Allen and/or Dave Scott were featured in several commercials back in the 80s/90s. In this current commercial, LS is only on screen for 7-8 sec and never close up. I might have recognized him if I watched it closely enough but normally I never watch the ads. In sum, I don't really think this is a "big moment" per se but rather just another footnote. The biggest things I noticed in the ad were Serena's boobs bouncing around. :)

I think it’s pretty cool that they included him rather than any of the plethora of mainstream sport athletes they could’ve used. That being said, It was such a short clip that I doubt it will increase his recognition among non endurance athletes

Jeeeshhh! Dude was in what looks to be a national ad, so at least $100k I would say for some minutes of work. And actually they probably used stock footage he already had, but either way well worth the effort..

Ay Monty....Gatorade didn't use stock stuff; they hired a Pursuit Porsche Cayenne (Google that) for his 101 ride clips, which were preceded by the GSSI lab shots. (I missed seeing Serena on set the day before.)

We delivered that bike to Lionel the day before that shoot in Pescadero. That commercial is day 0001 of Lionel on a Canyon. Yours truly did his first fit aboard it. ;-)

Any exposure of our sport is good exposure! We love it, obvi....

Good job, so they paid him all that money for one day of intervals on his new bike!!! And yes, these types of exposure are great for the sport, even though they are mostly subliminal in nature. I got to do a Ford commercial that ran 6 years, so I know the gravy that goes with a few days of dealing with Hollywood behind the scene types, well worth it...(-;

I wonder how many viewers will believe the shots represent the sport of triathlon or just cycling since he is only on his bike.

Good memory!!! Was this after he collapsed on the Queen K and had to have part of his colon removed b/c he was so dehydrated??? IIRC, that was during the '97 Kona race, but I'm not at all sure about the year. We need an archive of tri-centric commercials. :)

That was it. I remember watching the ad during a halftime in the early 2000s. Thought it was pretty solid ad. It was only about Chris and how he recovered to win couer d'Alene. Nice spot for Lionel though. I'm sure he got a bit of change for the ad. Hopefully he can get a few more.

You are correct, Chris Leigh's finish line collapse was in 1997. That was the 2nd year that Kona did not use Gatorade after the title sponsorship of Gatorade ended with the "1995 Gatorade Ironman Triathlon". In 1997 the electrolyte replacement drink was the debut of MetRx ORS (Oral Rehydrating System, which was a terrible sports drink and didn't last much longer than that race. Plus 97 was a TOUGH year too. Hellriegel won in something like 8:33 after going 8:06 the year before. There was a lot of carnage that year. It is also the same year Sian Welsh and Wendy Ingram both collapsed right before the finish line and had a crawling race to the line.

Still sounds bitter. A triathlete in a national commercial by a huge brand is great and it's being downplayed in a place that draws the biggest enthusiasts of our sport. We are the ones who recognize him, after all.

Whether the ad increases participation, recognition, etc. is beside the point. The responses here would probably skip over the negativity (whether true or not) if it was Brownlee or Kienle.

“Whether the ad increases participation, recognition, etc. is beside the point” what? I disagree. I think that is ENTIRELY the point. Otherwise you’re just another Lionel fanboy who is excited just because Lionel (or any other pro) is in a commercial. For what reason? To somehow legitimize the sport you participate in? Or some other reason? not being excited about a commercial <> negativity

Yes, I'd be excited to see any triathlon pro in a commercial, for the same reason (but to a lesser extent of course) that I'd be excited to see a family member in a commercial. They're from our ingroups.

Edit: Jumping to the "Lionel fanboy" train of thought just makes it sound like you're a " Lionel hater." Putting those in quotes because the terms are stupid

It's just cool that a big brand features a triathlete in it's commercial. I don't care if it increases anything or if the athlete is recognized etc.

It shows that the sport is somewhat relevant.

(And it is interesting to see what emotional reaction Lionel Sanders meanwhile gets on this forum. First he had a lot of fans. Now there is also the other side that wants to play down any sort of success this guy has.)

Agree with you ToBeasy. Gatorade could have put ANY athlete from ANY sport into this ad. The brand has no shortage of athletes to choose from. They CHOSE to highlight a triathlete and everyone on here should think that's pretty cool. It could be a no-name age grouper...fine with me. For obviously reasons they chose a pro athlete they sponsor. Sanders fan or not, it's a nice nod to our sport. I view it as Gatorade saying "hey triathletes, we see you."

I've seen the commercial 4-5 times now. Each time I smile with a "that's pretty cool" thought in my head.

Yeah, and who's the netball player at the beginning? Tatum? As in Channing? That's the only Tatum I know. Or maybe it was Tatum Oneal?

Most people won't know who Lionel Sanders is. I don't have a clue who the footballer is in the video, or the basketball player, but I can clearly see what sport they are playing. It's clear to see that someone is riding a bike and that he is using Gatorade to, supposedly, help him ride faster. For the 99% who have a life and don't come on this website or forum, that may be enough to get them to use Gatorade when riding. That's what Gatorade wants.

For Lionel Sanders, he gets paid to do an ad and gets exposure. I quite often search for the name of a song behind an ad and then listen to the ones I like. I have also just searched for that Tatum chap, turns out it is Jayson (seriously, why the y?) Tatum. He has already got one person more aware of him than before the ad. I now know he plays for the Boston Celtics who are sponsored by Nike. Hmmmmm, seems like good exposure to me. So someone may do a search to see who Lionel Sanders is, will find it out and will also find out that he is sponsored by Canyon and Garneau, increasing their brand awareness.

So there we go. It's not rocket science. Why all the negativity?

Oh, wait, it's Slowtwitch, that's why

I liked everything in the ad except the triathlon stuff. I mean, everyone was cool and unique, just being themselves. But the triathlete was wearing an aero helmet. I mean, who the hell needs an aero helmet? What a useless necessity. It was probably some wealthy young lawyer or something. Screw that rich asshole guy!

Perhaps the sarcastic tone of my use of the word netball was lost on you. I was hinting at the fact that basketball is a sport that is almost exclusively followed in the US and those of us outside of the US know very little about it and who is involved.

But of course, feel free to make some really rude personal insults whilst you’re at it.

In return, I bet you’re the kind of guy who wears MAGA trucker hats, loves guns and has a slightly worrying closeness to various family members.

I do wonder why I bother to come on this forum when it is inhabited by people like you

Yeah, I was thinking you might be being sarcastic by using the term netball. But just in case you weren't, I replied with a 'road rage' type response. No, Actually I'm Canadian and don't care much for Trump. Was happy he won though because I despised Hillary Clinton for her unauthentic persona. Trump is at least being who he is and everyone knows that. Was actually rooting for Bernie Sanders. I've also been drinking a bit tonight so forgive my post.
