2017/18 100/100 Run Challenge Airing of the Grievances Thread
Quote | Reply
i suspect dev will initiate the actual 100/100 sticky thread, but i thought i'd start "grievances" early, as there has been a lot of talk already about the 100/100, making sure it's going to take place, etc & so forth.

so, here is where you complain that the 100/100 is ill-conceived, or talk about last year's success/failure, or evince unbridled enthusiasm about the exercise. or other.

here is where one would enter. we are trying to get our training log to integrate with strava before the challenge begins. we have a little training log debugging to do, i don't know if you can see WHO enters a challenge before the challenge actually commences and people start putting up sessions. seeing if we can change that.

begin...

My grievance is that this stupidity has lasted this long....we started in 2006-07. So 12 years later it is like a cockroach that you can't kill and keeps coming back to life after the fall leaves are gone and the winter kicks in for us Northern Hemisphere people!!! OK, I am in for some shuffling....awaiting to see if I can get in for a disc surgery but in the mean time some shuffling on the treadmill is possible. Ideally I should do more running in 100 day than swimming....that would be around 350K-400K given my current fishiness trend.

....I thought I felt a ripple in the force. I actually thought of this today for God only knows why. Like lemmings off a cliff, I shall line up with the other ST trolls on 15 December to pursue the fool's errand of 100/100. Probably my 5th year.....high water mark was somewhere in the low 60's a few years back. Without the challenge, the count would be around 25. So I've got that going for me. Look forward to the smack, whining, bitching and SMH stupidity that graces the threads orbiting this annual challenge. It's official: I have no life. Carry on peeps.

I propose that you can count all the water running you want after you complete the warmup set of 20x50m fly on 50 seconds coming in sub 40. After that water run till you are blue in the face....if not we revert to counting all the forms that were previously allowed....run on pavement, on track, on sand, on snow, on treadmill. Both feet need to leave the medium you are landing on and be in the air during every stride if not that does not count as running. Basically we use the inverse rule to olympic race walking...in that sport, at least one foot has to always be on the ground....in 100/100 if it qualifies for 100/100 you'd get a DQ at Olympic race walking!!!!

I was just about to come on here and air my grievance that in 2017 I still need to manually enter my runs when every other app and device I use (Garmin, Strava, Trainerroad, Trainingpeaks, Fitbit...) integrate (mostly) seamlessly, but you've already anticipated that one!

Looking forward to having a decent crack at this challenge for the first time, it's always piqued my interest but this year some major life changes have meant I'm enjoying my running more than I have in a very long while. Will see if I'm still enjoying it in ~4 months time... Good luck with that Strava integration

Every year I enter the 100/100 to get into run shape. This year I approach it running more than I ever have and that freaks me out even more. I'm scared of how to handle it now. Prolly gonna do lots of doubles and take at least one day off a week. I'll need to reflect on a new approach.

Oh....and I'm bringing more friends into it this year.

I am a-grieved that so many of you over achievers will do well over 100. It isn'Â’t a 200/100 Challenge. Y'Â’all should have your own separate challenge!

I hit 90/100 last year. Aiming for 100/100 this year. With the challenge ending on a wonky day (something like March 24?) it is a good way to get through tax season without emerging with that stereotypical fat frumpy CPA look. Work every day. Run every day. It’s on.

Starts too early for me, as I'll be taking a few days off after the Austin Marathon (Feb 18th)

A month window on the start/end would be great. (ie. pick your own start date for the 100)

Asking for a friend who owns an elliptical....

So, I can't speak for how people will interpret this, but since I own the SQL query, the current implementation will count any training log entry that counts as running with at least 30 minutes duration during the challenge period. This means, "Running", "Trail Running", "Treadmill", and "Snowshoe Running".

We've got two weeks to nail down any differences of opinion. Ready.... go!!

I would like it to be a true 100 runs in 100 days challenge rather than the look at me I can run before AND after work challenge.

Basically, did you run 30min today? Yes, great! you get a gold star. I don't want to hear about how long you went yesterday, so you are going to take a day off. No run, no gold star.

You have a race during the challenge, that's a you problem. Your wife gave birth during the challenge, that's a you problem. You have to travel for work during the challenge, that's a you problem.

After nearly 10 years of streak running including a current streak of 2 years with 3mi/day, I don't want to hear excuses, just shut up and run.

Thanks, I've been keeping that in all year.

It would be nice to allow a minimum of 5K or 3 miles instead of 30 minutes. This would also allow 4x1 mile or 6x800 (plus 400 warmup) speed workouts. If it's not too complex, you could put a required average pace on the runs under 30 minutes to keep it from being too easy. It's a little odd to count a 30-minute 5K but not a 20-minute 5K.

i think if you ran 4 x 1mi, with the rest interval, you could count your rest interval. so, as long as this was an active workout, with the rest being no more than is necessary to achieve the desired interval workout effect, you'd get the whole time start to finish as your allotted time. that is what my best sense tells me.

This is correct. Both feet have to leave the medium you are landing on during every stride.....does not matter if you land on pavement, sand, snow, gravel, treadmill deck, a boardwalk, a concrete runway outsprinting an F-18 with F404 turbofans or if you are running in the Kentucky Derby on mud trying to win the triple crown....you need to take flight on every stride. Heck, you can include water running if your entire body launches out of the water, leaves the water, is suspended in air and then you come back down on the water. If you are Jesus, you would not sink and just launch into the next stride....the rest of us will sink making it harder to launch into the air on the next stride.

Seriously, we all know what real running is. If you have to ask if what you were doing is running good chance it is not. It's like what I told my son when he was 7....if you have to ask me for permission for something you think might transgress family rules/values, you probably don't have to ask because you already know yourself what the answer is. He's 21 now and it's work pretty good. . Just do real running and it does not matter what surface you are on and what you are wearing on your feet (spikes, hokas, snowshoes, studded screws on your Newtons to run on ice....we don't care....just run dammit)!!!!

Now where is the festivus pole? I got the soup Nazi coming over this afternoon if you guys get out of line. Gotta go prepare for some VC meetings. If I am successful, then this place will have to police itself during 100/100....if I fail, I will have a ton of time to be a pain in the butt....hopefully you don't have to air the grievance that I have too much time to devote around here!

During the Summer, I hosted the 2016 Screaming Tortise [It Only FEELS Endless] Endless Summer 100 Days / 100 Runs Challenge, wherein the minimum was 3 miles or 30 minutes

However, for the Slowtwitch crowd, who can probably drop a 24:00 5K without much trouble, what's another 6 minutes? Granted, we're all pressed for time, but ... it's SIX minutes!!!

Agree with keeping it to 30 minutes.. the challenge is about consistency not speed - no temptations to race through the 3.1 miles to get done faster.

Also, the Challenge is for % days out of 100; no prizes for how many MILES you run on those days

Well for most here running a 20 or under 5K would be a race, or race effort type of run. So add in a little warm up and warm down and you got your 30 minutes.

My interest is piqued, did we decide treadmill is ok?? I would definitely have to start there before my big body hits the road surfaces and full gravity. Perhaps this is what I need to get those pesky 15 lbs to leave the mothership..

Treadmill should be in!

For us in the colder parts of the country, this might be the only way to log miles due to inclement conditions, cold, darkness, etc.

I want two days of credit!

I won't get anywhere near 100 - honestly 30 would be pretty good for me. Last year I only got to about 20.

LOL, I thought you were going to complain that your most awesome pat on the back had not arrived by FEDEX yet....

So my complaint is that FEDEX pickup guy did not come...so no prizes yet. All those high price subscriptions we pay to Slowman can hopefully cover some high price gifts during the challenge. My subscription fees keep going up 20% on my zero dollar base every year for the last 14 years and it is really getting out of hand at this point. If the zero dollar prizes are not good, I might need to ask for a massive rebate on my zero dollar ST subscription (this entire place is starting to feel like a show about nothing)....well the Festivus pole is over there -------------->

Keep airing the grievances....only 15 days left before the real running. I hear that Rob Gray who won Ultraman hawaii with a 10 min walk 1 min run strategy is complaining that this challenge won't give him credit for a 6:59 RUN and rather we would only give him credit for 6:18 run and a 41 minute walk gets deducted and since none of his walks were 30 min long separating his runs, he only gets credit for one really lame long 6:18 run and we deducted both the 41 minutes of walking and associated distance from him. Tough rules around this place!

Well that can't be any of us slowtwitch guys. You can tell because "c-a-t" is spelled correctly.

Clicking "enroll" should work for everybody. Strava integration is proceeding apace. By Monday we ought to be able to see the full list of participants BEFORE the challenge period begins.

Some of the rest of the grievances seem totally valid, though. :^)

I love this challenge and I completed 100/100 runs last year. It was very hard and I skipped lots of swims and bikes to make it happen. This year I'll do my own personal 100/100 with a swim bike and/or run every day for 100 days. Not 100 runs. Much more sensible for me, anyway. Plus there are those participants who do 2 runs a day every so often and up with 100+/100 runs which is crazy and sort of cheating. But the crazy is what we sign up for if we want to do triathlons. Keep up the crazy. I want to see someone do 200 runs in 100 days! 100/100 is for the weak!
Safe training to all.

200/100 has been done by some guys several times already. My grievance is that you have the audacity to come on this thread and say it is cheating doing double run.....sheesh man, the entire point of a sport focus is to indeed do multiple workouts of the same sport in a day....swimmers do it, runners definitely do it and so do cyclists. This is how you get good in a sport. Tell the Kenyans they are cheating!!!

OK OK, back to the proper airing of the grievances....give us something real people!!!

Well one could run 100x in one day and get it done if a day had 150 hours given that you need 1.5 to finish a 30 min run and wait 1 hour before starting the next one. Given that a day is 24 hours and a week is 168 hours, for the minimum 150 hour windwo to do 100 runs, you would need 6 days and 6 hours. So you could kind of leave it all for the last week if you wanted to, or get it all done in the first week....whatever floats your boat!

Anyone can make up numbers, and when its an internet challenge like this, I would only trust gps and/or heart rate.

Gps data for outdoor, and treadmill should have heart rate , maybe allow for a few treadmill runs without in case the battery dies, just my 2 cents.

Ill attempt this if the strava sync works. So for 30 min a day that 3 miles on easy days and 4.5 on faster. Whats the best way to approach it for someone going into it with only 20 miles a week (3-4runs) easy day every day or mix it up? Easy every day would be 21 a week but maybe Id get bored. I think treadmill should be at 1%, 0 seems like cheating.

The reason we start on Dec 15th is so that it ends on March 24th. Starting on Dec 15th is "early enough" that the novelty is high and people are motivated right through the holidays...basically the first 2 weeks everyone is super motivated. If I started on Dec 1st, a lot of people will already fall off the bandwagon during holiday eating season. With the start only 1 week before, pretty well everyone makes it through Xmas and New Years trying to get the runs in around family and friends and partying. It's an awesome balance.

Second reason is for many of us who live up North, ending first week of March is "too early"....there is still an entire month of winter. The last 2-3 weeks of the challenge is another phase where many put in a "final push" as they can see the end of the tunnel. This brings them to end of March just in time for a month or two of specificity before race season.

You'll just have to settle with 85 in 85, or double up to make up the "lost" time

So there is some logic to the seamingly random dates. This is actually the 11th year this is going on, so between the community, myself and some vocal folks for better or worse, we've honed in on the format. Now if you have any other questions about the challenge there is the annual airing of the grievances thread to get all the complaints out of the system.

Don't worry, Dave will run 150 times in 100 days and tell all of you how much you suck at running and wait till you get to 60. You heard it on the grievance thread first. My grievance is that slowman does not just get us over it, and put it in Forum rules and then instead of telling us that we suck at running and are not 60, Dave can just insert a C code pointer to that on the Forum rules.

I vote to simplify the rules to a 30 minute Run minimum. Forget the 15 min plus a 45 minute run the next day = two 30 minute run nonsense. I think this rule was abused a bit, and not necessarily on purpose, but due to lack of understanding.

More specifically they will be grieving on the race course weeks or months after day 100 when they are looking at the heels of your Nike Vaporfly shoes when you smoke them out of T2....at that point, all their top line ST approved benchpress FTP numbers will be useless. My final day's grievance, is that the disc surgery I am waiting for has not happened before the challenge....I was hoping to use it as an excuse, so hopefully it can happen DURING and I have a built in excuse to hound you guys from the sidelines at the virtual 100/100 track sessions.

doesn't matter. you have to do 100 runs in the 100 day time period. You can do one per day or 100 in 1 day (if there were enough minutes in 1 day to do so).
