Has anyone tested the XLAB Aero Pouch 300?
Has anyone tested this in a tunnel or at ERO? Daniela Ryf rode with this in Kona. I wonder how it compares to the XLAB Delta 400 with the MultiStrike CO2 and tube mount. I have the Delta 400 and MultiStrike but I've been interested in the Aero Pouch.

I believe Jim mentioned he was in the process of testing it.

I've been waiting for the results as well!

Appreciate the offer but will have the pass as it is about the only tri-related item on my Christmas list that my wife is willing to spend the price on. Curious though...why you have two, and why are you selling them? Any issues with them? Just didn't like them?

I have the xlab aero pouch 300... no testing though so I can't be of any help there. I do have the xlab multisport too. I prefer the aero pouch because it holds more. I can put one tube, 2 CO2, a multi-tool, 2 tire levers, and a micro-inflator in it. The multisport can't hold that so those extra items have to go somewhere else. I did find that a typical behind the saddle cage (something with major grip like a gorilla cage) + the aero pouch actually made it too difficult to get my water bottle out. Way too tight; i could lift my bike up with the water bottle. So I swapped to a regular basic water bottle with the aero pouch. No launched bottles yet as it's plenty secure and I can actually remove it to drink. Just my 2 cents.

Same experience here, actually I found it more difficult to get the bottle back in than to get it out - I went from Gorilla XT (impossible) to Gorilla (difficult to very difficult, depending on bottle) to a standard bottle cage (okay so far, not raced with it yet). I stuffed a lot of crap into the pouch admittedly.

Would be interested in aero numbers as well, but I hate having all the stuff hanging off the bike, thus aesthetically I am pleased.

I too have been using the Delta 400 and Aero pouched have had the same results. The Gorilla XT cage makes it way too difficult to get my bottle in/out of there. I just put an old Bontrager cage in there and it's been much better. I'd probably try a Chimp cage if I could get a good deal on one.

Overall though I've been really happy with the adjustability of the setup and with how much the pouch holds.

I wonder if it's worth changing to the Aero Pouch instead of the MultiStrike? I like the MultiStrike but the worst thing about it is riding in the rain and getting dirt all over the tube and CO2s hanging off the sides

I would definitely recommend the Aero Pouch - I can't really see this being less aero than the Multistrike and it's a much neater setup.

I bought one and didn't like it at all. Pulling the bottle out was too difficult and it sticks out a hell of a lot. I liked the idea but really hated it in practice.

Hoffmeister, that might be about the most useful post anybody ever made. Well, for me, at least. I've got my eye on one of these but have historically had problems getting any rear mount to fit with my setup. I'm using the Spesh Sitero on a P3C, and attempts in the past have struggled to clear the curved section at the rear of the seat post. Looks like you are using my combo too. So you are using the 2-hole mounts on the Cervelo post - is that the bracket that came with the Pouch 300? You seem to have no clearance problem with the back of the saddle, is it a fairly close run thing? You also seem to have your saddle pretty well forward.

Stuffed or empty I had issues getting my bottle in/out while using the Gorilla XT cage. However, i've got short t-rex arms and it doesn't help my case much. Switching to a cheap Bontrager plastic cage fixed my issue.

I guess I will have to make sure to do some road testing before any racing with it but so far on the trainer I'm not experiencing these problems. Bottles seem remove as easy as they did with just an XT and Multistrike set up. Two things that may be helping me and may help others-- (1) utilizing the twisting or rotating motion as you pull up on the bottle and (2) using otherwise easy-to-launch bottles--I'm using camelback.

Whoa, I surely didn't expect such an enthusiastic response to a grainy picture from my basement ;-).

The pouch itself comes without a bracket, I guess to keep it universal to all (XLab) single bottle mounts. I am using the XLab Delta 300. This thing is E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E ($100/£70). It comes with a Gorilla XT cage that is pretty much useless with the Aero Pouch. Maybe you can get one from XLab directly without the cage, I dunno. I am now using a cheap Planet-X Carbon Cage.

The fit is tight, I had to take off the transition hook and have about 2mm clearance to the little plastic clip under the saddle (see picture). The Delta 300 has 3 different holes to give more clearance if required, although putting the bottle further back might compromise aerodynamics. Alternatively you could take off the clip from the saddle and would have sufficient clearance either way. For me though everything fits perfectly with the Delta 300 fitted in the first hole. No rattling or other annoyances.

I tested a bottle where the groove in the bottle aligns with the lip on the XT cage and now understand what others are saying about things being to tight. Even on the trainer, it was much harder to get the bottle out. To those still wanting to stick with the Aero pouch, I suggest trying a bottle (e.g., Camelbak) with no groove and it comes out much easier.

Agree that it's a love it or hate it product in term of aesthetics but for me it looks good enough and the function is great : spare tube + CO2 + tire lever goes in there / bottle is well maintained in the cage / assembly is well maintened on the saddle / it's a very aero way to carry all this ;-) .

With a Xlab Gorilla cage and the pouch it makes it very difficult to get a bottle out. I put some lube on the rubber coated covers on the back side to make the bottles a little easier to take out. As stated it is an easy and likely aero way to carry items without having to worry them to fall out.

I can take bottles out of my rear carrier without getting out of aero when I am not using the pouch, using the pouch I have to get up. That may change things for a few people.

I found the same issue. If I just put a bottle back there it almost takes two hands to pull it out. Pretty disappointed in it. Of course I tried to mess with it and ended up tearing the little buttons on the inside that hold it together so jacked that up and can't return it. A waste of money now in my garage. If it was a bit looser fitting I would use it 100% because I love the gorilla cage and the aero pouches this just seems like it needs refinement in my book

I've used mine for four races since the beginning of August and have been very happy with it.

I'm running it on an ISM Race 2 saddle and fit a tube, lever, multi-tool, two CO2 cartridges, inflator and a crackpipe (when needed) into it. The aeropouch is about a 1/4" narrower than than the saddle on either side.

I did change out the cage for a "standard" carbon one, as I found the Gorilla cage that came with it was too restrictive.

I'm planning to Chung test it once I get a decent weather window.

Time for an update. I bought the Aero Pouch about 2 weeks ago. I installed it and I didn't like it right away. It was way too tight and I could barely get the bottle out. I overstuffed the bag though. XLAB tells you not to do this :). I figured it wouldn't work for me so I returned it. As the next 2 weeks passed, I thought about the pouch from time to time. I tried to make the MultiStrike hold everything I wanted and finally I just went and re-bought the Aero Pouch yesterday. I installed it tonight and after not overstuffing it, it seems to be working fine with the Gorilla XT. It is tighter than before though, but I like how it works and holds everything I need.

In the meantime, what I do have available at the moment is a CFD image which shows the bag itself in a headwind and how it re-connects the air at the back of the bag. Stay tuned!

I figured I would post what I had on my computer which was just the bag. Engineering is pretty slammed with some new products in development and some other projects that are deadline driven. I just need to find time to sit down with them and get the data & the image with the rider from their computers. I have some numbers, but want to present the full picture with time savings etc...like we normally do.

No official aero test done, but as others have stated, getting a bottle out with the gorilla cage and a packed bag is damn near impossible. I replaced the cage with a standard Bontrager and have no issues with launching a bottle or getting it out. Not the biggest bag, but will fit what you need. I have no reservations about recommending it.

Over-stuffing will make it extremely difficult to get the bottle out. Agreed, a basic cage is the way to go instead of a gorilla cage. Thankfully, you should only pull the bottle out once (twisting motion helps) and then leave it empty or replace it with an empty bottle. I doubt that anyone has ejected a bottle from this product.

As I mentioned they have the data and the image - I just need to get it from them, but they are super busy at this moment focused on other projects - when they are designing I try not to interrupt them.

To provide more information on the history of the bag: the original designer (concept & design) is an aerospace engineer. So a lot of the concepts he products contains aero elements we already know will be fast. He then works with another engineer who runs the CFD analysis and data output.

I'll admit, we could have published it sooner & better. Always room for improvement!

I agree that the aero pouch 300 cage is too tight for regular bike bottles, but the Gatorade bottles pictured here are a great fit. My experience is that this drink is offered on course in a lot of tris, so you're good to go in an event. As far as buying these to have at home for training, I haven't found them at grocery stores - only at convenience stores / gas stations.

This may be overly cynical, but I got second thoughts when I saw Cervelo using the AeroPouch in combination with the gels strapped to the top tube for their aero testing on all bikes except the P5X and I believe the SpeedConcept. Some data would definitely be good.

I asked Cervelo about this. They had to store a flat kit on the all of the bikes and the Aero Pouch was the way they chose to do so. The AeroPouch was not used on the P5-X or the Speed Concept because of the P5-X storage options and the Trek draft box.

As time passed (I know the original request was last year) we now have better models to test with so want to deliver the most up to date & most accurate data for Slowtwitch users!

We are a very small company and my mother, who does the Accounting is out due to a major surgery (not to mention recent complications) and the aerodynamic engineer (also CEO & my dad) who confirms the data outputted by my other engineer is at home caring for her.

I appreciate everyone's patience at this time

Thanks,

Candice

Hi everyone,

Please find the aero data for the Aero Pouch 300.

We tested it on a Delta 400, but the Aero Pouch can be mounted on any of our metal based single rear carriers, which includes the Delta 300, Delta 425 and the Delta Sonic models.

Thanks so much Thomas. My mom is coming home today!

Unfortunately the aero data is a day later than I had hoped as I had a dog emergency yesterday - but everyone is getting back to good health thankfully!

Let me know if you have any questions on the data.

I do have a couple of questions. I know in this situation the rider is nicely positioned with the bottle. Any chance the CFD model could be run with say the rider a bit forward? I know most triathletes don't really sit on the back of their saddles like that and are more likely to sneak forward.

As for me personally, I have a couple of pouches I have been playing around with. I have actually hacked up my Cobb Saddle to cut off the back in circle pattern to move the round bottle closer to my back/butt.

I can certainly see about adjusting the model - will see how we can fit it in with their priorities - they are working on a couple big projects at the moment!

Can anyone confirm me if Aero pouch 300 can be mounted on non XLAB rear seat holder (for ex. ELITE SkeKane)?

Due to the weight of the flat kit and the Aero Pouch, I would only use the Xlab Delta mounting system

I mounted mine on a specialized sitero with no trouble.

Candice, I talked with a few engineers working on aerodynamics of bikes and bike design at a major bike company and I was discussing something they came up with that has a similar purpose but was never released for public consumption. We talked a bit about the position of the Aero Pouch 300 being a little low and they suggested mounting it a bit higher up to be more effective. I actually was able to achieve this with the following Minoura mount and bracket flipped upside down. I had dremeled the seat to get it to fit. But it clearly wasn't designed to be used upside as the joint failed and fell off. My question is does anyone else make a bracket to get this a little higher up?

Hey TG, I use the same Minoura cage flipped upside down. You can provide support to the joint using zip ties, this will prevent it from breaking.

Hi Thomas,

Without seeing your individual position I can't really say much on the comment about the bag being a little low. Depending on your back position, saddle position, how you sit on the saddle - all those factors will play in to where the bag should be situated in order to achieve maximum aero benefits.

As far as recommending a bracket that mounts the bag higher up - again I would need to see your bike & saddle make/model in order to see if XLAB has anything that can achieve what you are looking for. Happy to assist - just need some more information :)

This is my current setup. I have another Minoura on order from Amazon given another STer recommended above that you can use zip ties to try and secure. That might be what I do but that this is a little bit of a tank.

Sorry about that. Let's try that again.

@harshc & @SummitAK - we recommend that the Aero Pouch 300 only be mounted on metal-based carriers due to the extra weight baring down on the carriers, so unfortunately the Tacx & Speedfil mounts won't work.

Yeah I actually tried that one, the rail is too long and puts the bottle a little too far away from the seat. I want something that I can get tighter to the butt.

Ah yeah the bag will be facing straight down with that setup.

If you are able to consider a carrier that mounts onto your saddle rails that would be best. For your saddle I'd recommend the Delta 400.

That is only a picture of my current setup with the cutout of the saddle. I'll try to see if i have an old picture of what I had setup with the Aeropouch but with the Minoura facing up the aeropouch is actually perfectly straight and in parallel with the ground.

Oh ok - that is always good to be parallel to the ground as a start point. Then we would take your body position on your bike see where the turbulent air pocket will be, and then fill in the space with the rear system.

Can anyone tell me if the Aeor Pouch could be mounted to a bottle cage that is simply zip tied to the saddle rails....no x-lab mounting bracket with screws?

The weight of a flat kit might be too much for that which is why XLAB requires the metal Delta arms to attach too.

I went for the beefiest zip-ties that would fit...rated for 180lbs of tensile load. If I were to give it a try is there any way to hold the pouch secure to the cage without the screws that mount the cage to a bracket?

Bumping this thread. Anyone tested the XLAB Aero Pouch 300 in the wind tunnel or ERO?

XLAB CFD analysis purports a 4.5W savings over no rear carrier and a 1W savings over a Delta 400 alone. I would love to see if anyone can back this up or at what they were able to calculate.

I've tested it on many riders, including myself. As with a rear bottle cage, it depends. It was neutral for me, faster for some.
