I live up near Wake Forest. I haven't done a triathlon in 10 years, but that would be pretty cool.

You may be right and it could be miserable, but it could also be nice.
If they do it early in June they might be ok. This year was a little cooler - Avg high for the 1st 10 days was 82, low 58, avg 70. Over the past three years though the Avg high for the 1st 10 days was 88, low 65, avg 76

The WTC race organizers must live up North as well and I have nothing but love for Canada...If I pay $400 dollars to race a 70.3, I want the opportunity to reap the rewards of busting my ass for the past 5-9 months and have the chance to achieve times that I once never thought possible. Instead, I'm going to be running about 12-20 mins slower, be in a complete state of survival mode for the entire 13 miles of the run, and wake up the next morning feeling somewhat refreshed because I didn't "race" but only survived it. It's like a surfer going out for a session with 1-2 footers...What's the point?

This overwhelming frustration is not directed towards M, its just that one of the highest states of USAT memberships has been waiting for this race for a very long time and they put the S.O.B in the middle of summer.

Let me HTFU real quick though!!!!

I agree. WTC directors should be required to race White Lake the first week of May before committing to a HIM in RDU a month later.

You ever do a HIM in 90 degrees and high humdity? I am not talking what northerners consider high humidity, I am talking dew points in the mid 70's, as in oppressive humidity. I have, twice, and it blows.

I guess it being an "IM" event will draw initially. Being a coach in the area, I'll be curious how big this does get.

There is a reason why having 2 halfs in back to back weekends didn't last to long. That race weekend had to get scaled back to 1 single race weekend now.

Anyways, the point is that it would be great to have an earlier season race where you could actually see how well you have trained and not have some madmax reenactment play out where the winner is the guy that suffer through the most dehydration...

I lived in Raleigh/Cary from 1993-2004. My in-laws still live there. This is a race I can get my wife excited about traveling to for a change. June doesn't work well for me because of IMTX in May.

Any idea where the race site will be? Most of the popular lakes are not close to a bunch of hotels. I'm thinking Jordan Lake or Falls Lake would be the best options if hotels weren't the concern because it would get the bike course away from harder to navigate populated areas. Lake Crabtree would probably make the most sense if hotel access were the primary logistical concern for the organizers. Lake Wheeler could be an option but there isn't shit for hotels down there either.

humans should not be exposed to lake crabtree for longer than 20 minutes/year or risk contracting several diseases. most of which are unknown and untreatable by modern medicine.

hay-i'matoughguy-craft, you train so hard in the swim you should be fine. apparantly you're also impervious to heat. just bring a course map so you don't get lost. boom.

Next time I race a cue sheet is going on my forearm.

Also, not saying I'm tough; White Lake can be a pretty miserable experience but I don't get how it isn't a good fitness test...? Enlighten me.

Looks like they are using Vista Point for the swim and staging for the bike portion. Hearing you may bike to downtown Raleigh and then run downtown. Same location as the Finish Strong Half in September 2012, but different bike and run courses.

Be interesting how they get 1500 plus athletes and additional spectators in and out of the area as the park only has 300 parking spots and you can't park on the side of the road on the way into the park.

Bitches don't understand the concept of "it doesn't get easier, you just go faster." Average people seem to need hills/heat/humidity to race themselves into the ground.

Also (not addressed at ye newly vegan), we have plenty of good burgers to go with our excellent local beers. Boylan Bridge Brewpub and Natty Greene's both brew their own on location . Big Boss is also local.

Swim venue with no parking sounds similar to Rev3 in Anderson SC. It has 2 transitions. Its really not a big deal with a race that has mandatory bike check the day before. On race morning, you just park at the Finish/T2 and they bus you out to the Start/T1. I think it actually makes race morning less of a hassle.

Just a couple of points, I'd like to make based on your statement:

This is the first year for the Finish Strong Half, so saying Raleigh already has a half is a little bit of a stretch. Who knows, this race may get cancelled (I know the RD has said it will not get cancelled, but never say never). Also, just a few months ago, we thought Metro DC was going to have a half also.

These two races are put on in very different times of the year. I know **for me** a June half works way better than a Sept half.

Also, as of today 93 people have entered the FS Half. They have capped the race at 300. I know some people prefer potential 1500 racers vs potential 300 racers.

And, finally, a downtown Raleigh finish could be awesome. The Louisville finish line is amazing!!!!

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

Ralieigh already has a Half...What's the allure of the IM 70.3 vs "something else" like the Finish Strong Half?

Agreed that my statement was a bit of a stretch since this is the first year of the FS Half. I, for one, hope that it does stay around for a while as I'm hoping to work my way up to the 70.3 distance in the coming year(s) and would love to be able to support the folks at FS Series in another race. Top notch race production from all the different ones of theirs I've done.

A finish in the downtown of Raleigh would be really sweet too. As long as they pick the right street, of course...Wilmington Street won't be the same as Fayetteville Street!

Fayetteville St would be cool! I forgot about all the work they have done down there since I moved away in 2007. Honestly, the first thing that popped into my mind was Glenwood South.

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

Why not go for something much more interesting than Raleigh (and I say that with the utmost love for my city)? B2B has the beach/ocean vibe going, the FS Series Half will more than likely be a similar race experience as the Duke Liver Center 1/2 from olden days, and there's a half in White Lake. Why not go for a race up in the mountains? Lake Lure perhaps? It would take over the town, but that's part of the fun of it. Big city races are great, but when a sleepy little neck of the woods like Clearwater gets run over by triathletes for a week, it's pretty special because it's all triathlon all the time. I think the same thing would happen in Lake Lure. My biggest concerns would be transportation and lodging for the number of people that a 70.3 would draw, but I think the WTC has pulled off events at equally challenging venues.

**For me** the date is the big draw. I'm doing B2B this year.

With a June IM 70.3, you could do both Raleigh and B2B in the same year.

I've done White Lake Half 3x so I know about triathletes taking over a sleepy little town.

Part of it is experiencing something new. I'd like to do Augusta someday, too. and Rev3 Anderson. And I was planning to do the DC 70.3 before they cancelled it.

The FS Half is just bad timing. This year it is the day after the UNC vs ECU football game. **For me**, that is just terrible timing.

Pink? Maybe. Maybe not. You decide.

I feel ya on that. I've missed many a tailgate to train and race but I got it pretty well balanced by Senior year. Having a car helps for sure. I used to train after class and ride my beater bike to Carter Finley.

June in Raleigh will be a beast though. Let's hope it starts at 6...

Hmm guessing it will not start at 6am according to the following which I copy and pasted from another post on another site.

"A race we listed is on the city council agenda for August 7, 2012 meeting and so was this........

Raleigh City Limits Vicinity
Brian Myrick, representing World Triathlon Corporation, requests permission to hold a race on Sunday, June 2, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m."

That has to be the least remarkable/useful way of making a race grueling. Holding it during the hottest part of the day in a part of the country that has average high temps? Florida heat tempered by an early start time or late season race is fine, but this pedestrian Raleigh heat probably will be a deterrent.

Thanks for the intel. Was hoping the race would be in the surrounding Lake Jordan area similar to the old Duke 1/2. Like James said Set-Up posted earlier in the year a hypothetical question for a half in the Charlotte area either in the fall or the spring. I am hoping the 70.3 race in Raliegh does not change the plans for a potential Charlotte race. It may be the minority opinion but a Set-Up Half IM would be more attractive to me then a 70.3 point to point race with a downtown finish.

Regarding the heat, yes us NC-ers must be wilting flowers (-: White Lake has been a scorcher, but what makes it more challenging is that the race is early May and we have not had hot days to train to acclimate. In any event the heat is the same for everyone and i have had both good for me and poor for me races there.

There also was talk of a full IM in South Carolina? Is that now dead?

Best,
Rockfish

So where exactly are the city limits? With a swim "out of town" and then biking into Raleigh, they would likely only hit the city limits at 9am (possibly I don't know the area that well). So it could still start at 7....

Raleigh city limits start at Lake Wheeler Road and Tryon Road which is about 4 miles from Lake Wheeler itself.

I see, you think that the swim will be at Vista Point on Lake Jordan (I wonder why there? That location will require cyclist to crossing or ride on US64 -- I'm assuming cross 64 and continue on Big Woods.) Well, if that's the case, it would be 45+ miles to where the Raleigh city council map picked up on Lake Wheeler Road.

Looks like leaving Jordan Lake and biking out Farrington would be a more direct route into downtown Raleigh.

Right, cross US 64 to Big Woods and turn right on Lystra to Farrington/Beaver Creek. Then some sort of route involving Old 1 and/or Friendship. Something trough Apex to 1010 and Penny Road maybe? That seems to be the most bike friendly route to get from Vista Point to Lake Wheeler.

Hope this happens. I know M-dot was trying to do a race around the Charlotte area(Lake Norman) but rumor was an agreement could not be reached on some of the logistics.

Would love to see a half in Raleigh. Especially if the swim is in Jordan and a finish line is downtown. I am guessing the bike would go out into Green Level then work it's way through Apex and Cary over into Raleigh. Some decent roads out there!

Wonder if the run course will be similar to the City of Oaks course.

What do you think of the point to point aspect? Will it be a pain or easy? What's the grade of the bike hills? It looks like some decent elevation gain. Nice to have another 70.3 within driving distance..

The parking at Vista Point will NOT be sufficient. So they will have to provide buses from downtown to the swim start. The bike will be nice with rolling hills. If I read the FAQ section correctly, the roads will be blocked for traffic.

I think that the bike course looks really good. I think they are saying ~1,200ft of climbing over the course...that's not bad at all. Point to point will also be so much better than loops. The run course is tough around the turn around (Art Museum) but will be nice coming back. Finally, with the finish where it is...there is a lot of options for after race beer drinking at some quality places (Busy Bee, Raleigh Times, Flying Saucer, Brewmasters, etc).

I wouldn't count on closed roads. I think they are just trying to discourage vehicular traffic on the bike route by what they wrote.

Agree...this is my kind of course. Rolling bike in places and a run that most should be able to negative split. Is a definite for 20131

For spectators, it could be a hassle.

For racers, it should be no issue. I am sure WTC will have a way to get your T1 supplies to the finish area. Honestly, it should not be much at this race. No wet suit, most likely. So all you'd really leave behind is goggles, a towel(maybe), swim cap and flip flops. Either way, WTC brings it to the finish area and racers have no reason to return to T1.

There will be a mandatory bike check-in on Saturday at Vista Point. Athletes will be shuttled on busses race morning from T2/Finish to the swim venue/T1 at Vista Point. They will place morning clothes and swim gear in a labeled plastic bag which will be taken to the finish area where they will be organized and ready for pick up when the athletes are done.

90's and high humidity are quite common in NC in June no matter what the avg says. We are usually hit our first 90 degree day in early May. You don't get accustomed to racing in that heat/humidity combo until late in the summer (if ever). 75 degree dew point in early summer will bring many to thier knees on the run.
