I'm racing an Olympic Distance in Connecticut, hoping to get my first finish of the year (after two injury-induced DNF's).

Good luck to both of us.

I like that, "cash in your training tickets". I've been thinking a similar thing, I feel better/stronger then I have for any race start so I'm wondering what sort of result that's going to net me.

Best of luck to everyone!

I'm at Wasa this weekend too for my first race of the season. If you see a tall, thin guy with a black Titanflex, stop by and say hi.

With all the fuss about IMCDA water temps, I can't help but wonder what the water is like in Wasa lake right now. At least, maybe it's cold enough to hold back the mosquitoes this year. ;)

Will do, what AG are you in? I'm 35-39 riding a black and yellow Scott Plasma. I've heard that the lake is pretty shallow so it warms up a bit quicker than some of the other lakes around there but with the weather the way it's been I can't imagine it's warmed up at all. I haven't done any open water swiming yet this year so I'm going to jump in on Saturday to feel it out.

1/2 Ironman in Lawrence, Ks. Otherwise I would be in St Louis/St Charles also doing the Rec-Plex Race. Its a great little race that they have in the spring and fall, same course always and a good way to judge your improvments over the summer and winter, I will miss doing that race this spring :(. But I will be back in the Fall before my big race (Ironman Arizona)

Ha!

I agree Rec Plex is a fun race, and the RDs do a good job.

However, I have to comment about it always being the same course... I've done the last four of them (Spring/Fall 2006, Spring/Fall 2007) and I don't think we've had the same run course twice, yet. It's always been just a little different. And, this year, it looks like they're going to be forced into having a different bike course due to flooding out by the turn-around. Crazy.

I'm heading to the home of the Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings for the Motor City Triathlon on Sunday.
Gonna do this Olympic distance race on scenic, historical Belle Isle. Then exchange some text messages with the Mayor.
And then take my mom & dad to the Tigers / Dodgers game at CoPa for Fathers Day.

And I will be listening to Eminem, Kid Rock, Iggy Pop, White Stripes and old Motown collections the whole time.
Maybe I'll mix in some techno.... (okay, probably not).

I've done the Hyannis Sprint 1 twice.

Once in 2002 and once in 2003.

I remember that the Red Wings won a triple overtime game in the Stanley Cup finals the night after the 2002 race and the 2003 race was altered due to rain and dangerous surf conditions.

so... there ya go.

Yes, you are correct now that I think of it, the run has changed a few times. I have also raced in this for the last 3 years or so both spring and fall (A nice gettaway for a weekend from the Kansas City area). Its still a nice race and well ran as long as you miss the train (So far I have each time. fingers now crossed). Good luck on the bike if it changes. Oh well see you in the fall!

I'll be at the RecPlex tri as well. Coming from Cincy and meeting my parents in Louisville along the way. My sister lives in St. Louis and this will be the 4th year consecutive we've (myself, my dad, and my sister) done the spring edition. It's a fun race, although I hope the run is more similar to 2 years ago and not like last year...cutting across the blacktop to go around the school (I think it's a school) and the construction was HOT. Luckily this year my takeoff time is substantially earlier than previously. GL

That's the only time it's gone in front of the school. All the construction is done now, though. So, we should be back to going through the park to start the run. Now, where the bike course is going to go...

I tried to do the "big fish, very little barrel" thing this am, and raced a very small, very local "tri", that had kayaking in lieu of swimming. YES!!!!

A very solid paddler/biker was in my wave, so I got a free ride for the paddle, I drafted him the whole way (which is, of course, totally kosher).
I repaid the favor to him on the bike, much to my chagrin. But hey, he's the one who hasta look in the mirror about that, not me.
Dropped him hard in the first 200m of the run, buh-bye.

Anyway, local uber-stud Keith Strudler shows up, he's the dude who won SOS last year. Swell.
He is a bike/run machine; but he can't paddle to save his life, so *maybe* I still have a chance....

Nope.

A 1m kayak isn't nearly long enuff to make enuff ground on a dude who can run a 16:30 5k off the bike.
So I finished 2nd OA. Always a bridesmaid.....

Cool stuff: they had bagpipers at the end of the race. And cold BEER. I had 2 Becks.

Not so cool stuff: very dangerous bike thru the crowded village. If you hit one of the 2 traffic lights, you had to stop. WTF??
Poor timing - nobody is really sure whether the first 2 waves of 10 kayaks went out together, or with a 2 minute interval like they were supposed to.
Run course had a very poorly marked (and totally pointless) short out and back (which wasn't on the maps, nor was it mentioned in the pre-race briefing, such as it was), and I went off course for a while. In an area that I know like the back of my hand. ARRRGH.
Without the out and back, it was probably a legit 3m or 5k - with it (and my wandering) it was 3.3m by my Garmin.

Enough of my whining, call the WAAAAAAMMMMBULANCE for me, I'm done crying like a biatch for now.

Another beer is in order.

Did a sprint yesterday: http://www.lin-mark.com/tgtrioof08.txt got me $100 for top masters male (40+), which paid for the entry fee and gasoline. I got to stay on the feet of the male pro in the race (never saw him after about a mile on the bike, of course). My main competition in 50-54 missed a turn on the bike (he was about 1:00 ahead of me, after staying on my feet in the swim).

Hey Murph, I found that small pond today. ;-)

Franklins Lakes sprint triathlon, 16th fastest swim split out of 754 finishers. ;-)

I think there is something to that Xantusia Tri Camp, and the instruction/video analysis by Michael Collins. You should get your butt out there next year. Come to think of it, so should I. So far, I've been able to work on the arm entry/pull. Still need to work on the recovery, and the biggy, body position in the water. Who knows where this can go when I get that all worked out? Oh yeah, btw, I've been in the water twice since EpicMan, once at Harriman for the NYTri sprint last weekend, and 2200 yards in the pool on Thursday. Hahaha. (Tigerchik would be proud of my results until she read about my swim workout habits of late.)

Had a very decent bike split for me as well (not really sure why). 32nd fastest bike split (yay me! :-) ). Run kind of sucked, still being in bowling bowl shape. I need to correct that before Tupper. Ended up second in AG (some young 50 yr old whippersnapper took first), and 26th overall.

Time to work on the bike!

See you in a couple of weeks.

Sorry for the slow reply. I don't check ST on the weekends much.

How'd your race go?

I thought they did a pretty decent job with what they had to work with bike course-wise. (Although, all the turnarounds were a bit hokey.)

Race went pretty well, can't really complain. 8:50 swim, 1:18 bike (w/ a 3 minute train delay), 32:30 run. I think I ended up barely in the top 100, w/o that train i would have been top 50ish. I was pleased for only cycling once prior this year and carrying quite a credit load this summer.

The turn arounds were def sketchy, I saw 2 near falls on them, and I've never done a race w/ dead animals on the course, but whatever...

How did your race turn out?

That road was pretty narrow for turnarounds, especially with people coming straight through, as well. But, what are you gonna do...?

I almost had a head-on on the last turn before going back into the Rec Plex parking lot. One lane, a 90* blindish turn and people going both ways. Crazy!

I ride that route regularly, so I guess I'm used to the animals (and the headwind that I heard alot of people complaining about).

I was pretty happy with my race. Got a top-10 OA and some AG hardware. Pretty good for me. I'm paying for it a bit today, though.

If you're interested in hooking up for some training some time, shoot me a PM.

I was pretty pleased with my performance...was not prepared for the turnarounds...nor the 2-3 extra miles on the bike course, but still managed ~1:07 (if you take out transition times)...my CPU had me at 21.0mph avg.

Got 30th OA, but unfortunately only 5th in AG though...I heard a lot of complaints, but thought they did a good job with what they had to work with on the bike course. The recycling center trip was unneccesary since we were already over distance, but oh well. I liked the other transition area location better...it was bigger too

Nice race. I need you to teach me how to run. LOL! (Well, not really laughing... Look for the worst run in the top-10 and you'll find me.)

The long bike only helped me. So, no complaints.

The other transition area was definitely more spectator friendly, too. Not sure what the reason for changing that was.?.

It's good to see that a lot of people had a great race this weekend, I did too. Had my best time ever for an Oly, 2:14.49, which was good enough for 7th in my AG. I'm pretty stoked on the time because I improved everywhere, including transitions! This was my first race of the year so I'm glad to be off to a good start. Thanks to the race organisers and volunteers at Wasa Lake, the whole event was first class and incredibly well run from my perspective, I'll be back.

Wasa was awesome. What a perfect day for a race! I ended up with a PR also, though mine was a lot slower than yours -- 16th in my AG. ;)

I never did spot your black and yellow Plasma, but congratulations on a fast race.

Congrats to you too! Good news that you had a PR, feels great eh? The conditions were perfect and as i mentioned previously i thought they did a great job pulling the whole event together. I'm definitely going to put that race on the calendar for next year.
