Best Movies to Watch on the Trainer?
Snow and sleet tomorrow, and I've got a ride on my calendar.

Any suggestions for a movie?

The last really surprisingly good trainer movie I watched was , "She's the Man". Light, fun, sporty, and a good sountrack. In between I've had a couple of duds...so I'm taking suggestions. Please feel free to chime in with your top favorite, top 5 or even top 10. Winter is still young....

THANKS!

I always like to watch sporty stuff, like Le Tour. Maybe American Flyers or Breaking Away? Its very motivating. Then again I've been known to go through several episodes of 6 Feet Under. Wasn't there a cheesey movie where the main character's brother wanted to be a cyclist and used to watch porn while on the trainer?

"Running on the Sun" is a documentary about the Badwater Ultramarathon run through Death Valley each July. I love watching it. Talk about a bunch of bada**es. I crewed for a runner last year and will do it again this year purely because of this film. I find it very inspirational to watch other people suffer more than I am.

Just watched "Music and Lyrics" and laughed through the whole thing. Generally romantic comidies that I would never watch any other time keep me very entertained. It is like reading People magazine in the doctor's office. I'd never admit to it but under the right circumstances.....

This past weekend I watched the Kona rebroadcast on DVR. Seeing all the Ironman activity really pumped me up for riding. The weekend before I watched Anchorman at some co-worker's urging. I giggled a lot and it made the time pass.

Arrested Development episodes on DVD got me through many a trainer ride last year (I hadn't seen any of them and ended up really loving them) Otherwise, like others have mentioned, I tend to like movies that are fluffier (stupider) than my usual fare. Terminator 2 was on at the gym the other day and I stayed on the treadmill an extra half hour because of it. :-D

Thanks for the ideas. Some of those sports ones, I don't know how I'd get my paws on them by tomorrow AM.

As for Anchorman -- LOL! That one got me through a long ride during my last training cycle. Hilarious!

That reminds me, recently I watched Talledega Nights and Blades of Glory on trainer rides....awesome. Just about my speed when I'm on the trainer.

Thx for input...

I like hour long series when I'm riding--45 minute episodes mean one plus a warmup for a short ride, two for longer ones. Plus, wanting to know what happens next gets me back on the bike when the m otivation is low.

I've watched all of Buffy the Vampire Slayer multiple times.

I like to watch action movies like Bourne Identity. I think fast paced movies that don't require thought are best!

"Prefontaine" is a treadmill favorite, and "What it Takes" is always inspirational. For pure fun I have gotten into the "Nip/Tuck" series. The storylines are outrageous but they really make the time pass on the trainer or treadmill.

If you liked Blades of Glory, track down The Cutting Edge. I'm not usually big on romantic comedies or figure skating, but I love that one.

My favorites:

  • Episodes of "24" I've watched seasons 1-5 on my trainer... no other tv show or movie comes CLOSE to making me work so hard on the trainer. Gotta get my hands on season 6...
  • A Knight's Tale-- Great soundtrack.
  • Bourne Series

That would be "Wimbledon"

I used to use it to catch up on past seasons of Gray's or something. But I moved and haven't hooked up my DVD player b/c I don't know how to hook it into the new cable box and am not home often enough to care.

I GET TO RIDE OUTSIDE STARTING NEXT WEEK!! Weather permitting!!

I like sports movies, they have some action to keep me pumped up and spinning fast. There was a soccer movie about a US illegal immigrant kid who got taken on by a big league UK team - I can't remember the name of it but it was a great feel good movie. Helped that the protagonist was easy to look at too! If I remember the name I'll post it. Girl Fight is good movie too, typical underdog boxer story but with a female protagonist.

TV shows on DVD are great, I'm a sci-fi geek and did a lot of spinning watching Battlestar Galactica over the last two years. Friday Night Lights is also a good show, I'm not a football fan but got totally sucked into it. There's usually some sort of high energy game-related action each episode, with a whole lot of soap opera in between.

Last year I watched a lot of hockey one weekend and The Godfather Part II the following weekend, I found that my cadence went up significantly when someone scored or got whacked (depending on what I was watching). I think it was the Godfather II that got me through my longest trainner ride (2.5 hrs).

One of my ex-boyfriends is in that movie! Without Limits--the other Prefontaine movies is good. Also "Fire on the Track", the documentary about Pre is good.

I like Romantic Comedies/Comedies--Music & Lyrics, Knocked Up, Licence to Wed, Heartbreak Kid are some ones I've seen recently on DVD.

I second the vote for the "24" tv series. Every single episode ends on a cliffhanger, so you have to keep going. A close second to 24 is the "Alias" tv series.

I was on the trainer yesterday and put GI Jane in the dvd player. LOVE that movie...haven't watched it for a while, so it's nice to see again.

But I'll watch pretty much anything. before GI Jane I watched the prize winner of defiance ohio (good movie).

I like TV series too. I'm just starting season 3 of Lost. It's pretty suspenseful and keeps my attention. I HATE riding my trainer. I do 30-40 minutes then use then stretch or do sit ups while the episode finishes. It's pretty much the only thing that gets me on the trainer.

I did have a bunch of triathlons that someone tivoed once and those were great as well. Try keeping up with Heather Gollnick's cadence!

I've been watching Heroes, Season 1. Why didn't anyone tell me how AWESOME this show is!?! I haven't liked a show this much since Boomtown.

This morning I watched the Sunday political shows, and the time flew by. (Yes, dorkus majorkus, I know. I can't help it.)

I just watched "running on the sun" last night after reading this. AMAZINGLY good film. Thanks so much. Any other endurance doc recommendations out there? Def good for riding on the trainer. It is pretty hard to feel sorry for yourself sitting inside on the trainer when you are watching people lance their blisters on the side of the road in Death Valley!

I am HOOKED on that show! I'm also hooked on Lost. We have satellite and a PVR so my husband will tape movies from the Movie Network to watch on our trainer rides. I recently watched Fracture with Anthony Hopkins - a little too heavy drama for the bike but a great movie none the less.

We have had terrible weather lately so I've recently put in some trainer sessions, here are a few shows that keep me entertained:

There is a show on Fit TV called "Art of the Athlete" that profiles different athletes that is pretty inspirational. I watched one on Diana Nyad this past weekend who was a very successful marathon swimmer this weekend and really enjoyed her story. It looks like a profile of George Hincapie is coming up, here is their web site: http://fittv.discovery.com/...ry/videogallery.html

Another show I watch that is interesting: John and Kate + 8. It's a 1/2 hour show about a couple of had twins and then sextuplets and how they deal with keeping everything together. Watching this makes me realize the importance of a schedule, being organized and not over reacting to life's daily dramas. It's inspiring non-athletic stuff plus the kids are really cute! http://health.discovery.com/...elins/gosselins.html

We have a DVR so I record these series and watch when I have time, very convenient!

I just watched "The Runner" about David Hortons record setting Pacific Crest Trail run. My husband was even taken in by it and that is saying a lot!

I also did 4.5 hours on the trainer Sunday while watching MythBusters. Multiple projects at the same time so you don't get too bored and the Jamie and Adam are hilarious.

Rather that watch the "traditional" movies (breaking away, blah, blah, blah), I watch films and series that get me so absorbed that I don't notice the pain of being on the trainer. Just finished the Dexter Showtime series and that really kept my mind on the screen. I'd want to see the next episode so I had to stay on the bike. Works like a charm.

I typically watch spinervals on the trainer, but I'll definitely have to pop on Buffy (and Angel) when I'm on the treadmill!

When I'm on the treadmill, I've been watching Madagascar (Dreamworks animation), Mulan, Pirates of the Carribean: Curse of the Black Pearl, Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and Harry Potter (any except Goblet of Fire). Shrek (and Shrek 2) are next on my list.
