Just remembered that dates are also pretty good to have as a topping. Also, quite surprised that so many people go with rolled/old fashioned oats versus the steel-cut. Always thought the steel-cut oats were better/healthier.

Google-fu tells me the following:

Also read that steel cut oats are basically the same as old fashioned oats, just a little less processed.

I guess they're all good. Steel-cut just has more in less.

not really oatmeal, but..

1/2 raisin bran
1/2 granola (30% fruit and nuts)
bluberries
soy milk (use more than you think, the mix soaks up a lot of liquid)
soak overnight
heat if you like; I prefer cold

When I get tired of the usual banana and ground almonds or banana and peanut butter, I do this:

Pumpkin Spice Oatmeal
*1/2 cup quick oats
*1 cup water
*Dash of Salt
*Sweetener of choice (stevia is my thing)
*Pumpkin Pie Spice to taste (or nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cloves)
*1/2 cup egg whites
*1/4 cup pumpkin
*1/2 a banana (I make it with this and without this- good either way)
**optional toppings: nut butters, walnuts, almonds, cranberries, raisins
1. Mix together 1/2 cup quick oats, 1 cup water, and dash of salt. Microwave for 1:30
2. Add in sweetener, pumpkin pie spice, egg whites, pumpkin, and banana- microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring after each one. This prevents the egg from getting cooked separately from the oats
3. I like thicker oats, so I cook down the oatmeal as much as I can
4. Top with anything and everything, serve and enjoy!

Oats+Berries+Nuts+Flax Seed+Apple Juice. Let sit over not and warm the next morning. My take on muesli. Way more flavor than plain old oatmeal.

I use a spoonful of peanut butter and some cinnamon and mix it in while it's still hot. Then I put in some pre-diced frozen fruit that cools it down and lets me eat it faster.

Try this;

Don't cook the oats.
Soak in Orange Juice for a few hours (even overnight).
Add Cranberries, chopped banana, shredded coconut.
Serve cold.

Very digestible, good carbs, not stodgy. I haven't raced with it yet but I'm having it a lot pre-training.

I cook old-fashioned oats in water. Then add grape nut cereal for crunch, blue-berries and a little maple syrup.

I go to bed each night looking forward to breakfast. :)

Local apiary raw honey. Yeah it costs more, but it's actual honey and supports a local independent business.

Trader Joe's Rolled Oats
2 packets Splenda
1 spoonful of peanut butter

My PB tastes great and seems to fill me up a little bit better than just plain.

I usually go with almond butter instead of the peanut butter.
Banana/berries/apples and a dash of cinnamon.
Flax/chia seeds add more nutrients to the whole package.

I usually cook mine with water and add a sip of milk after its cooked to make it creamier.

I make overnight oats - you eat them cold.

1/4 cup quick oats (or I like Scottish Oats)
1/3 cup greek yogurt (I use vanilla)
1/4 cup skim milk
1.5 teaspoons chia seeds
1 banana, cut up
1 tablespoon dark cocoa powder

Mix it all together and chill overnight. SO GOOD!

1 cup of old fashion rolled oats (or 1/2 cup steel cut oats)
3/4 cup wheat bran
2 egg whites
Tablespoon of olive oil
Handful of frozen blueberries

mix together, then add water
throw in microwave at low power for 20 minutes

go for run

come back to delicious goodness at just the right temperature (unless run is long -- then nuke for another minute or so)

This one is the craziest one so far. Never would have imagined OJ and oats. May have to try it just to try it.

I also like the idea of olive oil as someone else mentioned. I love that stuff, and if it tastes good on ice cream, it probably tastes good on oatmeal.

The PB and Co products are at walmart and target now. The white chocolate wonderful and dark chocolate dreams both say "certified vegan" on them.

Just a lot sea salt in my old fashioned oats. Try it, it's amazing!

So I'm not sure why I remember this being "Salt and Olive Oil"... anyway, maybe someone brought that up as something they use for their oatmeal topping. I couldn't find it in the thread. Needless to say, I tried sea salt, and thinking you had suggested so, olive oil as well. As it turns out, it tasted pretty damn good. Not sure its nutritional value is of any, well, value... but a good alternative nonetheless.

use milk, not water. skim is fine.
put milk in pot, add cubed apples, slowly bring to a boil.

upon boiling, add whole oats and cubed apples.
reduce heat, simmer.

when almost done, add more cubed apples (i like apples).

put in bowl, cover with cinnamon. eat like a MFer.

apples are good for you & taste good. by putting some in at the start they reduce a bit, thicken the milk, and release simple sugars. by adding them twice in later stages, you keep differing degrees of firmness. i mean c'mon, its oatmeal. it can get dull. the cinnamon is because cinnamon is awesome.

oatmeal made this way keeps well. it can be eaten cold the next day. some friends of mine bake it like a loaf but that seems weird.
