Tell me about your oatmeal!
Aside from the obligatory berries and bananas. What do you put in your oatmeal? I've heard peanut butter as a bit more of an odd-ball addition.

Either way, I'm sure there's quite a few other non-standard items fellow slowtwitchers like to top-off their oats with. I actually wouldn't be surprised if someone's pre-Ironman race breakfast includes beets in their oatmeal. I love beets, but I don't think I'll be trying that one. Mainly because I won't be doing an IM any time soon.

I tend to put a bit in the water before I mix the oats. Do you mean after they're cooked and ready?

I make my oats (Coach's Oats - delicious) using Almond Milk (original) instead of water. And then stir in a spoonful of peanut butter after its cooked. I like the extra fat and protein from the milk and PB plus it tastes better.

I add a heaping tablespoon of almond slivers/slices, dried cranberries, and a spoonful of a plant based protein powder. Sometimes, I'll change the almonds out with walnuts or other nuts. The added protein from the nuts and the powder make sure I'm not hungry 30 mins later.

1cup old fashioned/rolled oats
1/4 cup of milk

Nuke in microwave 2 minutes

Add diced Banana, shelled Walnuts, 2 packs of Splenda and a generous amount of Cinnamon.

throw in some eggs and you've got the breakfast of champions (well, at least the breakfast of the mediocre)

I throw in nuts every now and again... Raw cashews typically as I can't stop eating them. Interesting to know about the protein powder. I'll have to try that.

Here's a couple of other things I've tried:

- Chia seeds (not really for flavor)
- Hemp Milk (trying to stay away from Soy milk, and almond milk alternative)
- Cocoa Powder

Old fashioned oats in a small bowl & just enough water to make oats start to float. Microwave for 2:22. Add raisins, one packet of Splenda and some almond milk.

Seems to satisfy hunger and fill me up for a few hours.

I've got my recipe pretty set in stone now...

-.75 (3/4 or 75% also acceptable) cup of rolled oats
-1.5 cups of liquid (either almond milk or water)

Nuke that for 2 min

Post nuke:
- 2 tbsp of http://ilovepeanutbutter.com/...chocolatedreams.html (they sell it at Sprouts/Whole Foods)
- 5 cranks of salt

and I'm drooling...

1/2 raisin bran
1/2 granola (30% fruit and nuts)
bluberries
soy milk (use more than you think, the mix soaks up a lot of liquid)
soak overnight
heat if you like; I prefer cold

When I get tired of the usual banana and ground almonds or banana and peanut butter, I do this:

Pumpkin Spice Oatmeal
*1/2 cup quick oats
*1 cup water
*Dash of Salt
*Sweetener of choice (stevia is my thing)
*Pumpkin Pie Spice to taste (or nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cloves)
*1/2 cup egg whites
*1/4 cup pumpkin
*1/2 a banana (I make it with this and without this- good either way)
**optional toppings: nut butters, walnuts, almonds, cranberries, raisins
1. Mix together 1/2 cup quick oats, 1 cup water, and dash of salt. Microwave for 1:30
2. Add in sweetener, pumpkin pie spice, egg whites, pumpkin, and banana- microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring after each one. This prevents the egg from getting cooked separately from the oats
3. I like thicker oats, so I cook down the oatmeal as much as I can
4. Top with anything and everything, serve and enjoy!

Serve cold.

Very digestible, good carbs, not stodgy. I haven't raced with it yet but I'm having it a lot pre-training.

I usually go with almond butter instead of the peanut butter.
Banana/berries/apples and a dash of cinnamon.
Flax/chia seeds add more nutrients to the whole package.

I usually cook mine with water and add a sip of milk after its cooked to make it creamier.

So I'm not sure why I remember this being "Salt and Olive Oil"... anyway, maybe someone brought that up as something they use for their oatmeal topping. I couldn't find it in the thread. Needless to say, I tried sea salt, and thinking you had suggested so, olive oil as well. As it turns out, it tasted pretty damn good. Not sure its nutritional value is of any, well, value... but a good alternative nonetheless.

use milk, not water. skim is fine.
put milk in pot, add cubed apples, slowly bring to a boil.

upon boiling, add whole oats and cubed apples.
reduce heat, simmer.

when almost done, add more cubed apples (i like apples).

put in bowl, cover with cinnamon. eat like a MFer.

apples are good for you & taste good. by putting some in at the start they reduce a bit, thicken the milk, and release simple sugars. by adding them twice in later stages, you keep differing degrees of firmness. i mean c'mon, its oatmeal. it can get dull. the cinnamon is because cinnamon is awesome.

oatmeal made this way keeps well. it can be eaten cold the next day. some friends of mine bake it like a loaf but that seems weird.

I present to you the holy grail of oatmeal porn... see link below

http://www.katheats.com/kaths-tribute-to-oatmeal

Here is how the "base" oatmeal is made. I don't use the Chia seeds.

Whipped Banana Oatmeal
  • 1/3 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/3 cup 1% or skim or soy milk
  • 2/3 cup water (I like my oats a bit liquidy – cut back to 1/2 a cup if you don’t)
  • 1/2 a banana, sliced
  • 1/2 tbsp chia seeds (they give the best fluffy texture!)
  • Pinch of kosher salt
  • Vanilla, stirred in at end

Start by combining rolled oats, water, and milk in a saucepan over medium heat. Slice a banana into VERY thin pieces, leaving just a few bigger chunks. Walk away for a few minutes while the oatmeal heats. Once it begins to steam or bubble, stir vigorously at times to “whip” the banana into the oats. The oats will take about 5 minutes on medium heat from start to finish to fully absorb the liquid. They’re done when they reach your desired consistency! Then I stir in vanilla (and often pumpkin or cottage cheese) and portion into bowls. Add any toppings you like, such as almond or peanut butter dollops, nuts, granola, coconut, crumbled granola bars, or trail mix – with dark chocolate chips! Or check out all the combos listed below.

Berries and bananas are not obligatory, at least not for me. In fact, I've been eating oatmeal daily, sometimes twice a day, for the past 9 years, without ever once having berries or bananas in it. For me, it's raisins and brown sugar. For about the past 6 months, I've also added a couple of tablespoons of hemp hearts; it adds an earthy taste.

Old fashioned oats - about 3/4 cup dry with enough water to cover oats
Microwave 2 mins
Add honey
Add Whole Milk to cool
Stir and Enjoy

If I have it I'll add some walnut or almond pieces, sliced banana, and raisins.
I want to try a bit of sea salt great idea!

Here is what I do. Note: this may have already been covered but I am too lazy to read all the replies

Take:
1 cup Plain Greek Yogurt (0 fat)
1 Package of low sugar Quaker Oats flavored (yes I know process slightly)
1 Huge hand full of steel cut oats.
Berries are optional

Mix together and if you like your oats softer than just let is sit for 5 minutes. I frankly don't care and I am usually starving so I eat right away. But it is a great way to add to healthy things together to make something yummy. This fills me up all morning due to high protein and fiber.

I'm partial to oat groats, the truly whole grain version of oats--moreso even than steel-cut. For toppings, I go with extra-virgin olive oil and salt. I know it sounds weird, but it's delicious, and it's nice to completely eliminate added sugars. This also works well pre-race, or pre-workout, as it doesn't have any fruit sugars complicating digestion. Make extra oat groats, keep them in the fridge, and reheat fried-rice style: olive oil in a skillet, add groats, toss to sizzle and crisp, sprinkle salt. Fry an egg flat and slice into strips, toss that in there for extra protein.

Almond butter is also great.

I was throwing in wheatgerm then realized it was making one of my digestive issues worse. For that same reason I've opted not to try topping it with chia.

I guess they're all good. Steel-cut just has more in less.

EXCEPT - the ratio of oats to liquid for cooking above are:
Steel cut - 1:4 (1/4 cup oats and 1 cup water for one serving)
Old fashioned and quick oats - 1:2 (1/2 cup oats and 1 cup water for one serving)

So per serving steel cut are on par for everything except they're a little lower in sugars, which are negligible anyway, and they beat old fashioned on calcium.

Am I the only guy that does the instant sugar-added Quaker oatmeal? 2 packets with some hot water, done. Typically apple or maple brown sugar. I've tried various "natural" versions of the same, but they are never any good.

Large flake Quaker Oats, 1 cup oats to 1 cup water, microwave, add a bit of maple syrup (because every Canadian breakfast has to have it) and raisins. Nut allergy here otherwise I would add them too.

OK, so I finally had the balls to do it. Yes, Sriracha sauce on my oatmeal. Why Sriracha? Well, it's pretty hot at the moment (pun intended) and has a bit of a cult following. So, if salt, pepper, and olive oil was pretty tasty, perhaps I could have a bit of luck with this combination.

Old fashioned oats, fresh ground pepper, tiny bit of sea salt (sriracha is salty enough), and a tiny bit of olive oil (I'll try it again without it).

The verdict: While it's not something I may eat for breakfast before going for a long ride, it's actually pretty good. Not as spicy as I would have anticipated given the hot oatmeal/hot sauce combo. But if you like spicy, just add more.

Next up, habañero jelly.

Mine is every morning, one cup old fashioned Quaker Oats, with a hefty spoon full of light brown sugar, paired with 2 eggs laid fresh by my little flock of 4 backyard hens and a cup of joe. For early morning rides I have a stash of instant oatmeal packets so I can just nuke 'em and go. I should get Quaker to sponsor me with the amount of oats I go through, they make good chicken scratch too!

Usually eat it with greek yogurt, nuts and fruit , raw oats on top and cold (european , muesli style). However have to mention with Thanksgiving around the corner hot oatmeal is awesome with left over cranberry sauce and walnuts or pecans.

Hello AndresLD and All,

Dr. Frank Cokan has about 20 Ironman Hawaii races under his belt.

I was on the phone with Frank and trying to impress him with my 'excellent diet' so I was telling him about my oatmeal.

On previous dinner occasions he had berated me for eating beef as it was not heart healthy so I was trying to make amends.

I said, I have a large microwave safe bowl with a handle ............. I add 1 table spoon of rolled oats ...... Ja Ja ...... he says approvingly ... (he is originally from Slovania)

then I add a tablespoon of oat bran ...... Ja Ja (I am doing pretty well so far)

and a tablespoon of quinoa ..... Ja Ja

and a tablespoon of wheat bran ..... Ja Ja

and a table spoon of polenta ..... Ja Ja

and a table spoon of steel cut oats for texture ...... Ja Ja (still winning)

add some water ..... and cook it for 10 minutes in microwave ...... YOU COOK IT???

Hard to please Frank .......... he suggested eating it raw - just blanching the polenta for a minute or so in boiling water to reduce the crunchiness.

That did not appeal to me so I still cook it ..... add berries (blueberries, raspberries, Boysenberries and non fat milk ...... enjoy ...... :)

Cheers,

Neal

Ever try cooked grains instead of oats?
Lately my go to has been a 1 to 1 mix of amaranth and quinoa. Made in a rice cooker- just like rice.
The amaranth gives it a hot cereal like texture.
I also make a mix quinoa, millet, buckwheat and brown rice- also made in rice cooker.
I love the rice cooker because I always have food ready to go.

Mix one 5oz container Oikos Greek nonfat yogurt with 1cup mixed berries (frozen raspberries, blueberries, blackberries: thawed in microwave), about a packet's worth of GV Quick Oats, quarter cup granola.
I started eating this instead of ice cream and junk food. Lost 25lbs this year.

3/4 cup whole oats and 1 tablespoon of oat bran boiled in 1 1/8 cup water. Add 1 scoop unflavored why protein powder, 1 tablespoon of half & half, 1 teaspoon light butter w/ canola oil, a dash of cinnamon, and 2 scoops brown sugar. It's a lot of carbs, but I'm worth it. lol

Steel cut presently, quick cook.. it just means its cut a little finer AFAIK over "standard" steel cut.

This is how I eat it... couple raisins, one of these spices.... cinammon/pumpkin pie/apple pie spice and a dash of salt.

I do this quite a bit with steel cut oatmeal. I make some in the rice cooker and divide up into quarters. Take one portion, flatten out a bit in a skillet (sort of like a thick pancake), cook on both sides. Add an egg and some spinach and goat cheese. Shake of Tabasco, salt and pepper. Very tasty.

Everyday starts pretty much the same:

First: 1 kiwi
2nd : 1 bowl of 40gr of oats with 150-200 ml of cold soya-milk.
3rd: 3 slices of medium / dark bread. 1 with dark-cholocade, 1 with dark-fruit gelly and 1 with small pieces of chocolat.

Add 1 coffee (espresso-style, not brewed) and 1-2 glasses of tap-water.

Interesting. I have been cooking my steel cut oats with a 3:1 ratio of water to oats. 1/2c oats, 1.5 c water.
But I do the overnight method: Boil water (with salt), add oats. Put a lid on the pan and stick it in fridge overnight. Then in the morning, they just need to heat up on medium.
Leaves a bit more 'al dente' type. I hate oatmeal if it's total mush.

Almost every mornings breakfast is oatmeal with
almond butter
ground flax seed
dried cranberries
raisins
Then I add a fresh/frozen fruit for variety. My favorite is homade rhubarb sauce, but also do berries, pomegranate seeds, etc.

When I'm in the mood for a savory breakfast I make what I call "Thai Oatmeal"
peanut butter
sriracha
shredded coconut
green onion
cilantro
ground flax seed
raisins

Its freaking delicious. I might have to make some for tomorrow.

I am very particular about my oatmeal. I like it thick, not at all "soupy"...or "creamy" like my wife likes it. Mine is more "nutty". I have perfected a process that makes them turn out perfect every time. I don't add much other than a little brown sugar, but toasting the oats adds a little more flavor.

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup steel cut oats
  • sprinkling of brown sugar
  • 1-1/2 cup water

Process:
  • Start boiling the water on high in a smallish saucepan.
  • At the same time, take a skillet and toast the oats over another burner on med/high...make sure to flip every once in a while to make sure they don't burn.
  • When the water is boiling, turn down to low.
  • Add the toasted oats to the water...slowly, as the added heat from toasting will make it boil over if done too fast.
  • Stir briefly.
  • Cover.
  • Turn off heat.
  • Let sit for about an hour.
  • Serve in bowl.
  • Sprinkle with brown sugar.

Holy crap... Is that pre-workout?

Even having that after a workout, that's like twice what I eat for breakfast!

Pre-workout - 2 pieces rye bread with PB and banana (if in a hurry or a relatively light workout, just a banana and/or an apple) w/coffee

Post workout - 2/3 cup muesli (oats, bran, little dried apricot, few sultanas and smattering of slivered almonds), 1 cup soy or coconut or almond milk, banana, handful of berries, chobani.

Freaking delicious.

Would love to hear people's thoughts on whether this is a good approach - seems to sit fine (even when swimming is first up)

Used to do weetbix and banana - then went to the minimal carb approach (egg-white omellete or something after, just apple or banana before) but found that left me miles too lean.

Also - people should try the quinoa/oats mix. Throw in a few egg whites, and it is delish. I tended to keep the serving quite small though as its super dense calorie-wise.

This is an "advert" for porridge.... - traditional food of Scotland although many other countries having their own version (Chinese make a rice porridge called Congee and a Norwegian version, Rommegrot!)

Porridge oats are a whole grain cereal so they contain the entire edible part of the grain including the germ, endosperm and bran. The germ is packed with vitamin E.
Porridge is a nutrient dense food which means you get a lot of other nutrients for every calorie of energy. The gelatenous texture of porridge is due to beta-glucan, a type of fibre which helps to reduce blood cholesterol levels. It also helps to regulate the absorption of glucose, thus avoiding a sudden rush of sugar into your bloodstream.

Porridge oats tip ;

Choose the original whole grain -- In instant oat mixes/porridges, the beta-glucan fibre is broken down and the complex starch is pre-gelatenised. It cooks quickly but rushes into your system causing a sudden rise in blood sugar.

I will have plain oatmeal with peanut butter, but not regular peanut butter. If you want to cut out some of the fat that regular peanut butter has, use the powdered peanut butter. It doesn't taste great by itself, but in oatmeal it tastes great and you get all the protein without the fat.

Believe it or not, I didn't read all 100+ posts, so not sure if this was mentioned. Ted King posted his oatmeal on Strava once. He stirs a beaten egg in while cooking, and since trying it, I'm sold! Gives it an almost custard consistency.
