Carl,

Is there a list of known wheel compatibility issues with the SC (if there are any)? It seems that I frequently see rear wheels for sale in the classifieds because someone bought one and then discovered it wouldn't work with their particular frame. I have a 2011 SC 7 (which I love) and will be shopping for new, wide race wheels for it this winter. I would prefer to avoid the same fate. Are there any wheels you know won't work? On the flip side, what is the widest thing that you know will work (Flo disc? Jet 9+?)

Thanks,

Jason

Our wheels fit on the speed concept without any issues.

I hope that helps,

Looking for a 100/10 stem for a series 1 SC9. Also interested in a set of Tri-Rig clamps.

I'm looking at an XS Speed Concept. Neither my lbs, nor my fitter are Trek dealers, so it is tricky, and I'm having to figure stuff out myself.
What is the bottom bracket size? I'm thinking about moving my Di2 over from a Kestrel that has a Kogel bearing BB30 to gpx, with a gpx spindle an Quarq powermeter.

You can run a GXP-based crank on any SC with the right BB bearing kit. For the 2014-onward bikes you can get that kit in any of several "flavors":

524556 steel
411814 ceramic
518151 CeramicSpeed standard
518153 CeramicSpeed coated

Are you sure it is salt? ;)

Make sure your turbo fans are pointing at you not from you, I know it is harder to ride against the wind, but it might actually help your problem. :)

I have the same issues with my bike. I have started washing it once a week to see if this helps. The two screws that attach my Bento box just rusted out. I tried to remove them and ended pulling them both out. Now I've got two holes in my frame. I'm sure it won't be cheap to fix.

Yeah I am not doing anything hardware related right now.

Just for your viewing pleasure.

This is what my salt does to a bottom bracket:

The back brake locking up really kills speed and makes my power look special.

Is the Speed Concept a BB30 then? I have Kogel ceramic bearings on my Kestrel that go from BB30 to gpx now.

No. BB30 cranks and bearings are not compatible with the SC. Only GXP and Shimano. If your crank spindle is gxp then it will fit, but only if you get gxp bearings . Your kogel conversion kit from BB30 to gxp will not fit.

Bit if a novice question. I'm on a 2012 7.5/ultegra. I'm trying to figure out which Power2Max power meter works. I realize I need new cranks. I'm thinking the Rotor 3D as its 5 bolt pattern and looks like it will work with Bb86 or BB90 (I don't know which I have). Am I on the right path?

You've got a BB86 bike with Shimano, so the P2M Rotor 3D should drop right in.

Thanks! I'm using a Kogel gxp to bb90 in my Kestrel right now. I'll likely do something similar for the Trek. Right now I'm having a devil of a time with Project One - I can't make up my mind! So it is very useful to see your paint, thanks for sharing!

Has anyone gone to their bike shop to get a price on a replacement/new fork? I've read in this thread that the shop has to go through a few extra steps to order but I haven't seen if anyone has actually inquired. I recently bought a '14 9 series frame that came setup for UCI legal races. I would like to have the tri fork as well. I've emailed my "local" trek LBS but haven't heard back from them. Anyone know what the cost is so that I can be prepared? Thanks

Hi all! I am from Spain and this is my first message.

I just bought to my LBS my new Trek Speed Concept project one with Ultegra di2 like the photo.
I am waiting for it until december, and I'm looking forward to test it yet.
I will be aware for your advices.
Greetings!

Hi Carl, as it's the off-season, it's time to search deeper and deeper for more marginal gains, and the Di2 junction box on the latest model SC stem cover is annoying me.

I have the Di2 transmitter, so the Garmin can show me how much battery life is left, and the only time I need to access the junction box is to charge the battery.

So, I was contemplating drilling a hole in the draft box and the back of the seat tube to have the junction box in the draft box. I'm sure you won't be able to actively recommend doing this, but I know that Cervelo hasn't discouraged people too strongly from drilling the top tube behind the stem on older bikes, and many people (including myself) have done this without any problems, so I was wondering if there is any subjective guidance you'd be willing to offer on just how likely it is that drilling a Di2 connector sized hole in the back of the seat tube will cause a failure at some point? I just can't think of any other way to get the junction box out of the wind while keeping it reasonably easily accessible for charging.

Can you wrap a towel around the seat tube and down tube to catch any sweat running down the frame? Perhaps lay a folded cloth on top of the frame at the BB?

Can't speculate on the safety of frame mod like that, sorry. As a practical matter, I'd worry about the seatpost chopping off the wire.

How often are you charging it that you need the accessibility?

I've never done this, but I believe I've heard of pulling the rear derailleur wire and plugging in a second junction box there for charging purposes (when the other one is hidden).

Thanks, Carl, that is a great suggestion, I think I'll do that and tape the junction box to the internal battery along with the Di2 transmitter.

It seems to need charging every 3-4 weeks with the Di2 transmitter, but I should try checking for firmware updates in case they have improved the battery life since I installed it.

Carl -

A question I should have asked back in 2013, but it really didn't bother me until recently.

In 2013 - I crashed replaced my frame. I went from a green/white/black frame, where the front brakes were white, to a black frame. When I received the rebuilt bike from my LBS they retained the white brakes, and didn't give me the black brakes I presumed came with the crash replacement frame.

Should I have gotten black brakes to make the black frame (I got a lot of other spare parts with the replacement frame, but neither front/rear brakes). The color mismatch has started to bother me and I'm wonder if I should finally go ask the LBS about it.

If I shouldn't have received it, or they lost it or some other lame excuse- what is the part number for a glass black (2013 9.9 matte black/gloss black/silver frame) front bake for a small fork?

My (non-Trek approved) Di2 hack was to put the junction box under the saddle after routing a cable up through the seatpost. That way it's accessible in case you need to adjust the RD (which I have done exactly twice in 3+ years of riding Di2 on 3 bikes) or use the crash recovery during a ride. Of course it is considerably more difficult to use while actually riding than the conventional stem mount. Let me know if you's like details on the cable routing.

I found the D-fly to be a tight fit on the internal battery. I had to position it toward the rear to avoid the cage inserts/bolts (the roadie in me uses conventional cages for training). I'd be interested to know if there's room for the junction A as it's a little larger than the D-fly.

Hi Scott

I don't know if brakes would've come with the crash replacement frame. Pretty sure they wouldn't have been included with a warranty replacement frame, so my guess is a crash replacement frame would be treated similarly The black front brakes for a 1st generation SC are part# 419732.
