Also: I just watched the aquathon highlights. Next great american male-runner-turned-triathlete hope is Matt Mcelroy. All american in 10,000m 3 months ago. PR under 14 min in 5k, 28:30 10k. Just barely starting to swim full time... There is a nice little video on flo track that google will find for you. It looks like he's training with Paulo. So, you know, same old story: if he can get his swim into the front pack he'll be beating Brownlees in no time. If not, well that is what 70.3 is for.
40 58 » Mcelroy, Matthew (USA) 00:18:25 00:01:19 00:55:18 00:00:31 00:31:11 01:46:43
he lost 2 minutes in the swim today. i guess he knows what to work on this winter.

Agreed that it was disappointing to see such appalling conditions for the race. In all honesty I wasn't a huge fan of the course, a simply highway job on the bike, especially when compared to places like Hamburg, Stockholm, Auckland (RIP), Madrid (RIP). From an Australian perspective it's very exciting seeing Aaron Royle's run continue to progress so well, especially after such a difficult start to the season with injuries and personal events.
Gomez said from the outset that this was a training race, clearly he has an incredible ability to back up week after week, I'd be interested to see how much training he'd be doing between races, some people work well off a heavy race schedule but only minimal training in between. In a pre-olympic year he is making some very good $$ Be interesting to see if he backs of his race schedule next year to concentrate on training, or whether he sticks to the same formula.
Did you race at Edmonton, and/or at Chicago??? Also, do you race U23 or "regular elite"???

No not in Edmonton. Definitely not good enough- currently in Murakami for the Asian Cup here.
Going to non-drafting focus after this season, if you can't swim fast there's not much point/money doing ITU beyond gaining experience.

How far off are you, i.e. what kind of 1500 scm can you do now, going hard when you're rested??? I've read that the top ITU guys can go sub-16, which is pretty quick, but you are still pretty young right, like 22-ish??? So, you have some time to work on your swim, as well as the B and R:)

Saw him leading a chase pack on my way to transition - looked strong. I got to see him smoke some dude at the finish as well....just incredible to see him run. I only saw him at the finish, so no clue how he looked on the rest of his run, but that kick was inspirational. Welchie said something over the PA like "you're not going to outsprint him!"

now that the women's race has been moved up 4 hours, is universal still showing it live?

Why is the womens race during the week? Seems a bit odd.
Re: ITU Discussion Thread [USCoregonian]
[ In reply to ]
because USAT/ITU forgot that there was a bears home game on sunday and then had to move the entire schedule up 1 day so all races are done by saturday. originally the women were on saturday and the men were on sunday.
Re: ITU Discussion Thread [mag900]

As much as USAT sucks at times... They don't have crystal ball to predict the NFL Schedule a year plus in advanced.
Re: ITU Discussion Thread [Grant.Reuter]
[ In reply to ]
it's 50/50 if there will be a bears home game each sunday in the fall if you do nothing. USAT could have coordinated with the bears and the nfl to have scheduled the bears on the road this weekend. it did not.
Re: ITU Discussion Thread [mag900]

There is a zero percent chance the NFL give have a rats butt what ITU/usat wants. That was never gonna happen.
Re: ITU Discussion Thread [Grant.Reuter]

it does when the city of chicago tells the bears to block off 9/20 for a road game. there's no football game without the city signing off. this goes on every year with many cities that have conflicts and don't want 80,000 people attending a football game. USAT dropped the ball here.

Does anyone else get annoyed with Barry announcing? I know he may not mean it and most of what he says is true but he sometimes puts down some of the athletes. He was putting down Kanute for going for it on the bike/run saying "he had no chance". While it may be true, is there really a need to verbalize that as the race announcer?

Very true. Some announcers are just terrible and Barry is definitely one of the better ones. Just maybe there's a better way to verbalize some of his thinking though.
Hell of a race by Mola. Gomez tried everything. Mola was just better today.

So lets recap what Gomez has done in the past month....
Raced Stockholm, wins. Goes to Austria "casually" races a 70.3 world championship of illness gets third. Fly's across the pond to the far north western end of North America and gets 2nd at Edmonton. Then 2 weeks later gets 2nd in the Grand Final winning his 5th WTS all while running a 29:06 to end this past month. It's amazing to think what he has done in the past 5 weeks, the travel, training/recovery, logistics, etc to pull that off all so well. Amazing.
Congrats to Mola for one helluva race, I was hoping Luis could pull it off today, but its been great to see Mola's progression to the top since London.
Great effort by Kanute to gun for his Rio spot, who cares what Barrie said, that was an awesome attack to watch.

He's a stud triathlete and a good role model. Absolutely great for the sport. May have spread himself too thin this month IMO. I think he literally had one of the toughest schedules in the history of the sport. Young bucks like Mola are moving up though, that was a hell of a S/B/R.

Was the run course short, or did Mola really run sub 29? In any case, what a run by the podium!

What happened to Jonny Brownlee, finishing 12th???
What about Hunter Kemper, DNF-ing after the bike???
And, yaaaaawn, Gwen won her 12th race in a row and 2nd World Championship in a row, which no one seems to even care about in this thread.
What happened to Sarah True, who finished 7th, and Katie Z., who finished 24th???
Discuss/speculate/hypothesize...:)

Johnny back from injury, just a bit race rusty probably. Was pushing hard on the bike and tried a couple breaks but didn't get good cooperation.
Kemper was in the last bike group and then did 3 run laps. Looked ok, but time to hang up the boots probably. Guessing he didn't want to run down the finish chute that far back.
Eta: and Shoemaker got a flat unfortunately

No idea what happened to True, she looked super strong coming out of the water and looked comfortable on the bike. Zaferes looked like she just couldn't get anything out of her legs on the run. You could see in her face and her breathing she was in the pain cave but it just wasn't there yesterday.
Edit: I don't care what anyone says, Gwen had to work for that win. Stanford put up a hell of a fight until the last 1k. Holland hung in there as well for the first half as well.
