OK, so not the best taper workout today, but I tried to dial it back before too much damage was done.
The issue is there are two people going to nationals from my workout group. The rest are working out as normal.

1000 warmup -- kick swim drill
20x100 broken up like...
8x100@1:30 (start 1:13 descended to 1:09 -- not hard, but began to start breathing... what am I doing?)
1x100@1:40 (i told everyone to get ready for me to drop out.)
6x100@1:25 (I think I cut every single length! Probably swam 70 meters each time)
1x100@1:40 (kick, drill, whatever)
4x100@1:20 (First one IM 1:06, Third one IM 1:08) The other two were slow and cutting lengths. I still didn't rest enough between 1 & 3.
200 warmdown

I love all the thoughts on taper time. I love taper time.

The rest of April looks like this for me:

Last bike ride today then took Felt Fabulous to shop for a tune up. Perfect timing!

Super light running for a couple more days (when I say super light it's more like a 'why bother' for most people).

Chilln' like a villain pool workout planned for tomorrow... similar to SH's workout.

Grab a couple splash arounds next week and it's go big or go home time.

Feet are feeling much better and shoulder is improving every day.

Nothing but positive thoughts from here on out!

Nice!

My favorite phrase right now is "sick taper" (from Monty's post).
I love just thinking about a sick taper.
When are you arriving at Greensboro? Thursday afternoon for me.

My taper was so sick today... 700m and cake and chocolate milk waiting for me at the end of it! My swim buddies are the best ;-)

Arriving Wed. night. It would be cool to somehow catch up. We're swimming some of the same events. I'm doing 50/100 Fly, 50/100 Brst, 100 Fr & 100IM and relays.

I really am jealous of you and SH going to nationals, you are going to have a great time. And it figures that in the last 3 weeks i will get in the most yardage i have been able to muster all year, nearly 60k. I actually have something to taper off of right now. All dressed up and no where to go!! We will be keeping track on swimphone of all your results, but definately keep up with your commentary and take on the meet each day here..

Up in the mountains for the week again today, so got in a quick one;

2x(4x100swim@1;30/100back@1;45/100brst@1/45/4x100IM kick@2;00) swims-1;23 to 1;18/ back-1;26/25/ brst-1;33/30-Kicks 1;52 to 1;44

Yes, sick taper weekend. I just drove to San Antonio (5 1/2 hours) for a weekend tennis tournament for my oldest daughter. What a beat down. Probably no swimming during this.
But yes, we definitely need to catch up. Just put on those goggles from your photo and walk around -- I should have no problem identifying you. =)

I'm living the 'sick taper' LOL!
I figure I have one more dry week and then I might be OK for the pool.
I'm on my final antibiotic IV this AM then get my PICC line removed hopefully today, as well.
I was on quite a roll and was looking forward to doing well at OC Tri, but going to skip it now.

So did you ever find out what was the cause of your leg infection??Man that was really scary, you hear about people all the time that have some small wound, and then they are cutting off their leg, or worse. Glad you are on the mend, you will be back kicking our butts in no time.

Meantime i have had the biggest 3 weeks of the year, very tired, but swimming ok in spite of. Todays set started out just to be a get through it, but once in i decided the only to motivate myself was to hammer down the intervals and go for a record;

2x(500swim@7;00/200IM kick@4;00)6;52/3;40/6;37/3;26, no break
2x(500pull@6;30/200IM kick@3;30)-6;14/3;24/6;08/3;23
100swim easy@1;40- 1;21
10x100pull@1;20- 1;15/14's
150 brst kick- 2;35
SO i did 4050 SCY in 59;45 start to finish and 950 of it was kicking. That has to be some kind of record for me. I should be just about ready for the long ocean swims this summer, just need a few 2 hour OW workouts to round it out..

Don't really know the cause. It could have been a spider bite on my shin - it started as a small 1/2 inch welt. I had the same thing two years ago, April, on my other shin and the only common thing I can think of was I ran some single-track out in O'Neil Park. Maybe something blooms in April that I brushed against that I am allergic to and broke out and then got the secondary infection. Every time my pulse was taken (46 to 52 bpm) I was asked, "Are you a runner?" So Doc picked up on that, looked at me, then, while rolling his eyes, he asks, "Do you shave your legs?" Well, yeah, but not in months lately. But he still thinks I nicked myself.

One reason my cellulitis got so bad is that it's usually a staph infection and my initial treatments were geared for that. They couldn't grow a culture, but based on the ineffective treatment, they switched over to antibiotics more geared for strep and it started clearing up, but not after it grew considerably.

That's a pretty killer w/o to get over 4k under an hour (at our age). Good job! Come on out for September's Tiki Swim. That'll be a killer month for me as I plan to do PCT, Orangeman and Tiki - each just a weekend apart.

Worked on back to breast stroke turns. Mine aren't too good. I may have to stick with the open turn there.

Ya i have always wondered about learning the flip from back to breast, but it is just too anerobic for me. ANd i guess for everyone else too, because i was watching i think the NCAA finals for the IM races, and some guys still do the open turn, so it cannot be that bad. I mean those dudes are doing 1;40 to 1;42 for 200IM!!! Just stick with what you know and take advantage of the extra air on the pullout..

Now that I got paddles, wondering what the best way to incorporate them is. My only session with them so far was Saturday with 1x300, 2x150 in WU, and 1x200 in CD. How many times per week, what percent of the session and where inside of it...?

This afternoon...

200 swim
100 kick
100 dr

800 steady@1:40 base (11:44)
400 cruise@1:35 base (5:43)
4x100 strong@1:30 (~1:21)
4x50 easy@1:00
600 steady@1:40 base (9:00)
300 cruise@1:35 base (4:18)
3x100 strong@1:30 (~1:23)
3x50 easy
400 steady@1:40 base (6:08)
200 cruise@1:35 base (accidentally went 250 in 3:40)
2x100@1:30 (~1:25)
2x50 easy@1:00
200 steady@1:40 base (2:55ish)
100 cruise@1:35 (~1:2x?)
2x50 strong@:45 (~:38?)

It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. A lot of triathletes do a lot of pulling and are very good pullers as compared to some swimmers who rarely pull. But many of those athletes are not nearly as good in just plain swimming, but in our sport we rarely have to just plain swim. Most races are wetsuit legal, drafting events. Pulling is a great exercise for that kind of swimming. Very good strenght work to help with the fullsuit bind on the shoulders and triceps, and the buoy gets you more in line with the body position of a wetsuit, where you hardly kick at all.. Looking at your times, you will probably be one of those that gets a lot of big pulling sets, I'm one of those people.

Early season when i focus on just swimming races(pool) i pull about 20%. Right about now when i'm going to focus on long distance swims and tri, it will be 35% to 60%. Since you are new to the paddles, work in the sets slow and make sure there are no issues, but once you get a good feel, blast off!!!

Thanks... I'll start out slow. They already felt good the first time, definitely worked my shoulders and lats. The first couple 100's after taking them off, my hands felt ridiculously tiny, like babies hands. I didn't attach the wrist straps, and had to force an early stop to my stroke to see if it would almost take my paddle off...it did. I didn't use a pull buoy, but is it better to use one while using the paddles? I'm trying to get much better in swimming in general, but I am a better OW swimmer than in the pool (non wetsuit swimming as well). Most my races are in the mid-west, so we more often than not have non wetsuit swims...which I much prefer, contrary to your average triathlete.

Ya, it is good that you take the wrist straps off, forces you to use EVF properly. And for the buoy, it is good to use, but don't neglect real swimming to balance out your pull with your kick. I do most sets with buoy, but a few without. SOme folks will paddle with fins on.

I've been told by my workout mates -- from their tone I don't think they appreciate it one bit -- that I kick just as much with a pull buoy as I do without. I never saw the reason to destoy my stroke timing in order to completely shut off my kick when using a buoy. With EVF my pull already taxes my lats so much I don't use hand paddles anymore. I might try to use them a bit here in the future, but my current paddles are very large. I would need to get a lot stronger.

As far as your comment about an open turn, I agree. I've seen a 1:41 200 yard IM with an open turn. If it was good enough for that guy it should be good enough for me. He would probably tell me that the open turn represents one of the least of my worries.

So so swim today. Have a plan for a half ironman that I'm mostly following the swimming portion and this was race rehearsal weekend to explain the odd 'set.' Not actually racing the HIM though due to work so probably need to figure out something else for swimming. I'm at the point where anything that gets me in the water helps.

Today...

Swam about 2,000 scm -- mostly slow. My lower back was hurting this morning so I didn't practice starts and 25s like I was planning. I swam one 100 free pretty hard. Started off just smooth and finished the last 50 meters fast but not all out with a 1:02. I was happy with that, but would have liked to get a little more speed work in. I will try to do the block work tomorrow.
