Went out after a pretty tough KOM today, gave it a decent shot, but didn't have my A game.
Moved up from ~28th to 13th, so still a decent effort.
(11 of the 12 ahead of me were the GFNY crew. Fast Bastards. :-p )

While I was in the area, I found another short nasty one right around the corner. Game on.

The headwall on this bitch goes at 20% grade for a little over :30.

Actually according to strava it reaches 239.2%. Impressive!

Still searching out popular segments in my area, but I knocked one KOM off during my long ride yesterday:

Cool thing is if any of you local yokels want to beat it you have to high tail it to Spain....

Picture from the start of the climb:

Rider finishing at the top:

Despite that ride being 1:40+ of steady climbing, this ride hurt a lot worse/was much harder IMO...

You should give Haleakala a try. I did it in 3:15 just riding tempo pace, but that was 10 years ago and I was lighter, younger and stronger than now (and just a cyclist). 0-+10,000ft in 35 miles is one thing you should put on your bucket list. Also the rest of the riding on Maui is pretty freaking amazing as well.

Yes - Haleakala is definitely a bucket lister fo sho.

We drove up it and hiked down into it the week after Kona, and saw lots of folks riding DOWN it (there are apparently several rental companies that specialize in this), but not many riding UP. Gee, wonder why? ;-)
If the plan comes together for next year, I'm hoping to make it to XTERRA Worlds on Maui, and then maybe rent a bike to hit Haleakela later on in the week after the race. (riding up it on a mtb would probably suck pretty royal, and IIRC the roads were decently paved for the most part).

Actually the roads are great all the way up. Or they were. There is a touring company on Maui that works with Ryder Hesjedal. They have some super nice bikes I think you can rent.

Yeah, all the "down hillers" look like something from ET with their Moto helmets and bright wind suits. They were looking at me like I was an alien though since I was going the "wrong" way. It is one of the most incredible rides I've ever done. Just be forewarned, the altitude really starts to bite at about 8000 feet.

Do people ever give you strange looks when you say what you did on vacation?

Yeah, first I did the Xterra world championships and then later that week I rode up a mountain. It took me over 3 hours, it was quite fun.

Well, this hasn't actually happened yet, so...

I generally keep my hobbies under wraps, and discuss things like weekends away or vacations in only general terms -
"we had a great time", "did lots of fun outdoors things", "the scenery was amazing", etc.
(you could say I am the anti-triathlete in that regard)

If I did Kona in 2007, my number would STILL be on my bike.

I love this one....someone set up this little segment literally right in front of my house. No idea why. I guess some folks ride through the neighborhood as a short cut. So I blasted it one day....

Have to get my Strava brag in quickly before my friend Amy demolishes it.

We have this short hill segment in Vancouver's Stanley Park that is used by a lot of riders, either if they are doing loops of the Park, or heading to the North Shore of Vancouver. (if they head to the North Shore, its a much smaller part of this segment)

I don't have a hope in hell of catching the KOM, (heck Sebastian Salas rides here) but I noticed that I was not far off the QOM. I though I was still about 18 seconds off her time, but it looks like I beat that time handily in April. True, I was only a mere 56 then, but I'll take it. And, 1st in my AG 55-64

At 184 lbs with as yet undiagnosed asthma back then, not too shabby.

I finally made it out to the Ashburn Hill. Morka is unbeatable by us mortals,of course, so I consider myself tied for 2nd.

Average is for the whole ride, Max was definitely on Ashburn.

Ahh yes...false flats after an 8 or 9% climb...nothing like them

I still like Cedarbrook better (although love the bike lanes on Ashburn now, so I will probably ride it more often)

So, temporary podium on Ashburn for now...have my sights on Starkville next

Ok, so I am now 26th on the Ashburn Hill climb. I need to take 28 seconds off my time to get back into the top 10. That is my goal for next year.

Until then I have downloaded Strava run. Only two people have run up this hill. I can definitely crack that top 10!

I'm hoping Strava doesn't catch on too much around here, I own most of the KOM's and CR's due to lack of participation lol.

Some of you guys will be into this - a site a setup to crown regional strava leaders: http://www.strabbaranks.com/
You can read the spiel there, but the main thing is, let me know if a bunch of you have a specific area you would like added. I've just been adding cities that I or friends have an interest in thus far, but it would be cool to fire up a few more. I'd like to avoid absolutely massive places like NY or San Fran (Strava Home) where the processing would be pretty intensive, but let me know if you want your town/city on there and I'll make some of them happen. I'll start seeding it by finding a very popular segment and adding the top 10 people or so. After a few of those when I have ~30 of the most prolific ballers in the area, it will generally take off on its own (anyone who wants in would just follow the regional user and I'll add you back). It's all in the site/spiel.

I know, after all the ads during the TdF this year I dropped like crazy. Stupid popular app. Stupid riders that are better than I am.
