Lionel should sit out. Even if he makes it there’s no way he even gets a top 10 and we know how badly he wants that race. This is not his year IMO

Lionel literally doesn’t have enough time to fry himself, but he’ll certainly try.

He has tended to leave some of his best efforts in training. I feel like the injury and rehab cycle actually forces his peak late into this year and gets him to the startline maybe ever-so-slightly undertrained, but at least he won’t be all broken and f*cked like last year. Wouldn’t be at all surprised if he finishes in the money.

But where does he qualify? Lake Placid that seems kinda soon if he just started running. The obvious answer is Mont Tremblant, that's the last chance race. Or he could just pass this year and do Chatt or Louisville and qualify early for next year?

I went to a Tim Don Q&A last night - he confirmed he isn't going to try and qualify this year - South Africa where he had a mechanical was his shot.

He is planning on racing Chattanooga to qualify early for 2020.

Does anyone have the pro start list for IM Tremblant, curious of those participating that have already qualified?

Thanks
Jean :-)

I check his Instagram quiet often and he's lost weight a lot. I'm not even sure if he can get qualified for Kona this year.
He looks weak. I hope he's actually not.

No way! I'm his huge fan. I can't wait to see what he can do in his next race.
Ironman is no fun without him.

Many triathletes have come back from injury and had more success than before they were injured. The forced rest turns into a blessing for them.

I won't say what Lionel should do, but I do believe he would benefit greatly from taking Kona off this year and getting an early qual for next year.

Downside is he might miss Frodeno's last Kona and we all know how badly those 2 want each other on their best day.

So would Jan stick it out one more year for Lionel if he doesn't do Kona this year or would Lionel kill himself to race jan this year and risk getting him (Jan) on his (Lionel) best day.

The lists that are out there cover until IM Victoria on July 17. I think it's very early for them to release a pro start list for IMMT in August. I don't really think Lionel can go to IMLP because is too early on his recovery (bummer 'cause I will be there and it would be nice to meet the guy). I'm not sure if he's with a coach now but if I was I would recommend sit out. This year he hasn't had a good progression because of the injury and I really don't think he would do well in Kona (this year).

I believe Carrie Lester is doing Ironman France this weekend and will likely get her KQ there.

As far as I know, he has no coach.
Lionel hired me to help him get back on track after his disaster in Kona 2018. I met him the summer of 2011 in Caledon and I have been somewhat involved (very sporadically) and provided advice when asked or when needed (or when I think he needed it) since then. We tried to work together in 2015 but I found that he was way to stubborn and difficult to work closely with after about a month. We tried it again after Kona 2018 when he reached out to me after the race. That ended at the end of Jan of this year. He decided he would rather execute his training plan to a 'T' in Tucson instead of coming to Florida to have one-on-one coaching. Bottom line : he just won't/can't listen to anyone. After Kona 2018 he swore up and down that he didn't know anything about anything and that was his new mantra (just watch his Youtube video) and then 3-4 months later, he goes back to being 'Lionel' and he knows everything about everything again. I thought it was a terrible decision for him to go to Tucson on his own and I felt that he was getting back on the same mental path that lead him to Kona 2018. He is perhaps the most talented 70.3 and maybe even IM athlete this sport has seen in a long time (or at least top 3) but I have a hard time seeing how he ever reaches his full potential because of his poor decisions. I tried for years to help but I eventually had to give up.

Can't wait for Talbot to chime in.

Addicts tend to think they know what is best. As I've said numerous times, he's an addict. He traded drugs/alcohol for fitness/podiums but at the end of the day, he needs 'help' (coach, therapy, rehab, etc. -- you choose which at the whatever state he's in) to head down the right path.

I agree. God knows what it would do to him if he raced and was outside the top 10. Watching his youtube videos, he's very blunt and honest, but he seems a long way from being mentally healthy. No-one likes being injured, but you have to cope with it. There's this massive mental aspect to triathlon, dealing with adversity, being resilient, staying positive when shit is falling apart. Perhaps it's an ares he needs to work on?

The most talented 70.3 athlete should have been in pink right?

Frodo, A Brownlee, Gomez, Blummenfelt, Iden, Stornes, Kanute, Von Berg and probably even Cam Wurf at this point would beat Lionel 8/10 times in a 70.3. Dude can't swim.

Agreed. All are great athletes. My point is that Lionel often out bikes and/or out runs many of them on most days, especially if it is a non-draft-fest type of course (maybe Frodo at his best is close to unbeatable?). Heck, go back and look where LS was at 2014 70.3 Worlds. He barely had 3 years of decent training, he took much of the winter off from the bike in previous years while he was running x-country in University and accomplished 4th at Worlds and he started with a last place swim. Since then he has made minimal to no progress (he bikes the same power or less and runs the same pace or less - for both racing and training). The point I am trying to make is that I assume all those great athletes are close to maximizing much of their god given talents but Lionel is far from it. Lionel gets 2nd in Kona 2017 and his training progression was 7.5/10 (that's my opinion after reviewing every single workout he did) leading up to it. He made several training errors and still lead for most of the race right up to something like 23 miles of the run.
I assume that other athletes make better overall training decisions and that Lionel's decision making process is why he isn't where he should be. I have been using the initials FWC, (Future World Champion) for as long as I can remember to describe him. That is definitely his potential, imo, but you can't reach your potential if you make poor decisions, and I just couldn't figure out how to stop him from making poor decisions. Miracles and surprises don't happen at 4 or 8 hour World Championship endurance events.

Example:
Problem : He got 2nd place at Kona and just needed to hold his run together for a bit longer. He needed to improve by about ??... 1%.
LS Solution : Instead of changing 1% and making small tweaks to his diet, bike, run, training, etc., he went and changed 99% of it. He completely changed his diet. He completely changed his bike set up. His training was a complete reversal in 2018 vs. 2017. How do you explain that?

Problem : Slowest swim among the top tier professional long distance triathletes
LS Solution : Hire perhaps the best open water swim coach and then never, ever go and train with him. Use only online training plans. Instead, train in a pool by yourself with no coach on the deck & train in an endless pool in your basement in Windsor. That is not World Champion decision making skills, imo? Remember, he has unlimited time and unlimited money, he just has solve problems (ie. a slow swim).

Don't get me wrong, he has obviously had a ton of success and he is an incredible natural athlete. One analogy that I use is someone who has won a lottery but then through a serious of poor decisions, blows all their money. Lionel hasn't blown all his 'money' (time in this case), but I couldn't figure out how to stop him from blowing the rest. Maybe somebody else can figure him out but I am 95% confident he can not figure it out on his own. The mentality that he had in the month or two after Kona 2018 can put him on the right track but that needs to last 2-3 years, not 2-3 months.

Its clear he can't figure it out on his own. Almost all (probably all?) world class athletes thrive through coaches and a team.

Doubly so with addicts. They need support networks. They need to rely on others. You can't will your way through that type of thing and if you look at what he is doing it looks just like another addiction.

Here's the video that Cookiebuilder and I were thinking of:

https://youtu.be/q-_Y_061YVk?t=600

You ask him around 10 min in what his diet is like and how he prevents injury (actually kinda painful to watch, considering the injury that was on the way). Couple of quotes from his response: "I love the idea, and as my career starts to wind down, I'll go to progressively more plant-based because I do believe it is probably the best way that you could fuel yourself." "I still want to be part of the movement." "I'm striving to do one vegetarian day a week, and then 6 of whatever...one week, for instance, I ate 5 days vegetarian." So, you can see where we got the idea that he was heading in that direction.

At any rate, I liked the cheeky question about chocolate milk being vegan in the latest YouTube video (reminded me of Scott Pilgrim vs the World). Guess that clears things up. Thanks for checking!
